  • Hybrid acceleration-impedance sensor nodes on Imote2-platform are designed for damage monitoring in steel girder connections. Thus, the feasibility of the sensor nodes is examined about its performance for vibration-based global monitoring and impedance-based local monitoring in the structural systems. To achieve the objective, the following approaches are implemented. First, a damage monitoring scheme is described in parallel with global vibration-based methods and local impedance-based methods. Second, multi-scale sensor nodes that enable combined acceleration-impedance monitoring are described on the design of hardware components and embedded software to operate. Third, the performances of the multi-scale sensor nodes are experimentally evaluated from damage monitoring in a lab-scaled steel girder with bolted connection joints.

  • Power quality monitoring is the cornerstone for power quality analysis, diagnosis and improvement. The measurement of power quality (PQ) evolves from instantaneous metering to continuous monitoring. Furthermore, recent technologies enable us to construct more flexible, reliable, rapid and economical power quality monitoring system (PQMS). Therefore, this paper presents an improved PQMS with a new distributed monitoring structure. The proposed PQMS consists of a PQ meter, PQ analyzer and GUI. The PQ meter only collects raw data and the PQ analyzer performs power quality analysis. It has several advantages compared to conventional structures in economic efficiency, modularity, speed, etc. PQ monitoring algorithms to catch steady-state trends and to detect PQ events are also adapted to the proposed structure. Using the proposed structure and monitoring algorithm, a prototype PQMS is constructed and real-time testing is performed.

  • This paper describe the power quality monitoring results of the grid-connected wind turbine generator in Daegwallyeong Test Site. The power quality monitoring for grid-connected wind turbine generators are important to verify their performance as the grid-connected generators. In order to measure the impacts on the grid of wind turbine generator and evaluate the performance by analyzing electrical parameters, we equipped the power quality monitoring system in the real field of the Daegwallyeong test site. The developed monitoring system gathers information by remote access through the internet. The monitoring results and the detail explanation for the developed wind turbine monitoring system is presented in the study.

  • In this paper, we have developed a multi-attitude monitoring system for running farm robots for field farming. There are many agricultural robots that can select work modules for various tasks. In order to control the stable attitude of agricultural robots connected to each other, we developed a system for monitoring the roll angle and pitch angle difference by fusing the information of the attitude monitoring system mounted on the robot mainframe and the work module. The developed attitude monitoring system showed resolution below 1 degree. In this paper, roll angle difference of 20 degrees and 60 degrees is measured with a multi - attitude monitoring system.

  • In this paper, we have development of horizontal attitude monitoring system for agricultural robots. A two-axis gyro sensor and a two-axis accelerometer sensor are used to measure the horizontal attitude angle. The roll angle and pitch angle were measured through the fusion of the gyro sensor signal and the acceleration sensor signal for the horizontal attitude monitoring of the robot. This attitude monitoring system includes GPS and Bluetooth communication module for remote monitoring. The roll angle and pitch angle can be measured by the error of less than 1 degree and the linearity and the reproducibility of the output signal are excellent.

  • This paper provides an overview on development of long-span bridges monitoring in Japan, with emphasis on monitoring strategies, types of monitoring system, and effective utilization of monitoring data. Because of severe environment condition such as high seismic activity and strong wind, bridge monitoring systems in Japan historically put more emphasis on structural evaluation against extreme events. Monitoring data were used to verify design assumptions, update specifications, and facilitate the efficacy of vibration control system. These were among the first objectives of instrumentation of long-span bridges in a framework of monitoring system in Japan. Later, monitoring systems were also utilized to evaluate structural performance under various environment and loading conditions, and to detect the possible structural deterioration over the age of structures. Monitoring systems are also employed as the basis of investigation and decision making for structural repair and/or retrofit when required. More recent interest has been to further extend application of monitoring to facilitate operation and maintenance, through rationalization of risk and asset management by utilizing monitoring data. The paper describes strategies and several examples of monitoring system and lessons learned from structural monitoring of long-span bridges in Japan.

  • In order to evaluate the influences of Myo-monitoring on masticatory muscles, Myo-monitoring on 31 normal persons and 30 persons with one more temporomandibular dysfunction symptoms during 45 minutes or above. The author observed velocities of mandibular opening and closing movement, variabilities of mandibular rest position and EMG activities of temporal and masseter muscles. The obtained results were as follows : 1. There were no significant differences on velocities of mandibular opening and closing movement between before and after Myo-monitoring. 2. There were significant differences on vertical dimension and total dimension form mandibular rest position to centric occlusion between before and after Myo-monitoring but no significant differences on anteroposterior and lateral dimension. 3. Activities of temporal and masseter muscles were decreased in Myo-Monitoring. 4. There were disappeared significant differences on EMG activity values between normal and symptom groups after myo-monitoring.

  • Recurrent laryngeal nerve injury can develop following cervical or thoracic surgery; however, few reports have described intraoperative recurrent laryngeal nerve monitoring. Consensus regarding the use of this technique during thoracic surgery is lacking. We used intraoperative recurrent laryngeal nerve monitoring in a patient with contralateral vocal cord paralysis who was scheduled for completion pneumonectomy. This case serves as an example of intraoperative recurrent laryngeal nerve monitoring during thoracic surgery and supports this indication for its use.

  • This study was conducted to investigate whether attitudes and recognitions of middle and high school students regarding environmental concerns were improved after anuran call monitoring. It was a step toward monitoring local environmental changes with anuran calls. Three-striped pond frogs (Rana nigromaculata), Bullfrogs (R. catesbeiana), and Narrow-mouthed toads (Kaloula borealis) were surveyed to determine local abundance and distribution of them in 12 study sites using their advertising calls. A published booklet, which contains morphological, physiological, ecological, and acoustic information on amphibian species and methods of monitoring anuran calls were provided to monitoring students for identifying the three species. Pretest-posttest were conducted before and after monitoring from 10 April to 28 August in 2005 to determine how the monitoring students changed their attitudes on environmental issues, increased knowledges on amphibians, and improved the understanding on the cause and effect of declining amphibian populations. The amphibian monitoring program was effective to improve the students' attitudes towards conserving environments as well as the students' knowledge on general behavior and ecology of various amphibian species although their understanding about various environmental problems was not. In addition, the program increased the students' understanding on the problems of declining amphibian populations.
