  • Column chromatographic separation of the MeOH extract from the roots of Dicentra spectabilis yielded fourteen compounds, menisdaurin (1), menisdaurilide (2), trans-N-p-coumaroyltyramine (3), trans-N-p-feruloyltyramine (4), 4-O-feruloylquinicacid (5), chlorogenic acid (6), 3-O-feruloylquinicacid (7), ferulic acid (8), protopine (9), Kaempferol 3,7-di-O-${\beta}-{\text\tiny{D}}$-glucopyranoside (10), kaempferol 3-O-${\beta}-{\text\tiny{D}}$-glucopyranosyl-7-O-${\alpha}-{\text\tiny{L}}$-rhamnopyranoside (11), ${\alpha}-rhamnoisorobin$ (12), astragalin (13), and nicotiflorin (14). Their structures were determined on the basis of NMR spectroscopic data. Among them, compound 1, 3-8, and 10-14 isolated from this plant were reported for the first time. The isolated compounds (1-14) were tested for nitric oxide (NO) inhibitory activity on lipopolysaccharide-stimulated RAW 264.7 cells. Compound 3, 4 and 12 significantly inhibited NO production. Moreover, Compound 3 suppressed pro-inflammatory cytokines ($TNF-{\alpha}$, $IL-1{\beta}$ and IL-6) in a dose- dependent manner. These data suggest that compound 3 possess anti-inflammatory activity and might be useful natural materials for development of anti-inflammatory agent.

  • Specialty barley extracts were prepared and investigated for its antioxidant activity and biological activity. Hunter $L^*$ values of the Iksan 86 extracts had higher than that of the Iksan 87 and Zasoojeongchal extracts. The extraction yields of Iksan 86, Iksan 87, and Zasoojeongchal was 8.08, 6.62, and 7.30%, respectively. The contents of total phenolic compounds of the Iksan 86, Iksan 87, and Zasoojeongchal extracts were 16.24, 15.51, and 13.95 GAE mg/g of sample, respectively. The DPPH radical scavenging activity of Iksan 86, Iksan 87, and Zasoojeongchal extracts were 50.00, 33.27, and 7.56% at a 500 ppm, respectively. The samples showed an inhibition of xanthin oxidase. ACE inhibition effect of specialty barley extracts, Iksan 86, Iksan 87, and Zasoojeongchal, was 39.81, 41.06, and 27.78%, respectively. Tyrosinase inhibition rates (%) of Iksan 86, Iksan 87, and Zasoojeongchal extracts were 26.21, 24.57, and 20.00%, respectively. Results indicated that specialty barley extracts possesses various biological activities including antioxidative capacity, xanthin oxidase inhibition activity, angiotensin converting enzyme inhibition activity, and tyrosinase inhibition activity.

  • In our study, osteoporosis was induced by ovariectomized in female rats, and the prevention and treatment efficacy of the climacteric disease the postmenopausal type I pattern was examined by using the experimental substance Cassia tora (CT) ethanol extracts. Female rats were either sham-operated (sham; n=5) or surgically ovariectomized (OVX; five animals per group) and then administered to OVX control, raloxifene hydrochloride (RLX) 1 mg/kg/day, or CT (20 and 200 mg/kg/day) for 12 weeks. Serum osteocalcin and creatinine concentration were significantly lower in the CT 200 mg/kg/day group compared with the OVX control group. Serum progesterone concentration was significantly higher in the CT 200 mg/kg/day group compared with the OVX control group. Reduction grade of the trabecular bone decreased in the RLX 1 and CT 200 mg/kg/day group compared with that of the OVX control group. In conclusion, CT 200 mg/kg/day may have inhibitory effects on osteoporosis in OVX rats.
