Nature of Company Ownership, the Dual Role of CEO and Board Chair, and R & D Investment Intensity

  • Purpose - This study examines the impact of company ownership nature and of the dual role of CEO and board chair on R & D investment intensity, as well as the moderating effect of this dual role. Most previous research focused on the impact of the dual role of CEO and board chair on firm performance. Design/methodology/approach - This study uses A-share companies listed on the Shenzhen and Shanghai stock exchanges in China from 2008 to 2017. The univariate and the multivariate regression analysis were hired In order to analyze the data. Findings - The results show that there is a significant negative relationship between state-owned companies and R & D investment intensity. In addition, there is a significant positive relationship between the dual role and R & D investment intensity. The effect of state ownership on R & D investment intensity is more negative when CEO-board chair duality exists. This means that in case of state-owned companies, if CEO serves as the board chair, the propensity to invest in R&D is further reduced. Research implications or Originality - This is a pioneering study that considers the joint effect of state-owned companies and dual role on R & D investment intensity in the Chinese economy.

  • This study suggests the applicability of an AHP(Analytic Hierarchy Process) to improve the validity and fairness of evaluation index to assess the defense core-technology R&D projects. This study focused on the design of the proposal and performance evaluation index to structure them into a hierarchy using AHP which can be applicable to take the opinion of the defense R&D experts. Using the refined evaluation index, we propose a technique to enhance the reliability of the defense R&D projects evaluation system.

  • This study is trying to estimate the effect of survey of prior art on the technological performance of national R&D program, with the purpose to enhance understanding on the relationship between utilization of patent information and R&D activities. Patent and Technology Trend Research, one of the survey of prior art which gives the information about existing technology and patent trend to the project team has been carried out since 2005. In this paper, effects which Patent and Technology Trend Research has on the technological performance of national R&D projects are estimated by using multiple regression model considering input factors, characteristics of an agent and supplier of money. The result is that Patent and Technology Trend Research has positive and significant effect on the grant and application of domestic and foreign patent. This result can give an hint that the utilization of patent information make the R&D process efficient and effective.

  • This study aims to provide information about the priority setting and budget coordination of government R&D spendings in Korea. Based on the result of "Survey, Analysis and Evaluation of National R&D Programs"in FY 2000. this paper reviews the government R&D expenditures by the concerned variables such as program objectives, sector of performance, character of work and technology fields. It is found that R&D spendings on the areas of industrial development, information technology, and development research are funded pretty high. Also, it turns out that, considering program objectives and character of work, there are some redundancies of R&D programs among government agencies. Policy implications are suggested.

  • Lately, countries around the world have been focusing their efforts on shifting from conventional industries to innovative-technology-based industries, and committing their competencies to growing startups as an important next-generation industry that will lead national competitiveness. However, there are inadequacies in studies and methods that analyze research and development (R&D) investment and startup performance from a technology perspective, which is an innate nature of startups. This study analyzed the correlation between a startup's R&D investment and its performance. More specifically, this study performed a correlation analysis and a panel analysis on startups that reached KRW 100 billion in revenue; these analyses were not applied in previous studies. The following are the findings: first, the R&D investment percentage of startups located in other regions was relatively higher than that of those in the Seoul metropolitan area, and second, when a startup's operating margin and net profit margin were high, its R&D investment percentage tended to go higher. In conclusion, this study identified that R&D performance resulting from R&D investment was a core competency factor in the success of a startup.

Top Management's Human and Social Capital Effect on Governmental R&D Support System Utilization and Success (최고경영진의 인적 및 사회적 자본이 정부의 R&D 지원제도 활용과 초기 성과에 미치는 영향)

  • Purpose - This study attempts to analyze whether or not there are characteristics among the top management of companies that promote corporate performance at venture companies. It investigates the characteristics of the human and social capital that are inherent in top management at a venture company and conducts an empirical analysis of hypotheses examining if these characteristics will affect utilization of the governmental R&D support system as well as affect the firm's initial success. Research design, data, and methodology - This study conducted theoretical and empirical research together to accomplish the goal of the study. The pilot study researched human capital and social capital as the independent variables; the governmental R&D support system as the parameter; and, the initial success as the dependent variable. The empirical study carried out research on the model, establishment of hypotheses, and the statistical treatment. A survey was conducted targeting top management of high-tech venture companies in Daedeok Innopolis; 500 questionnaires were distributed; and, 222 were collected. Results - The human and social capital inherent in top management at venture companies in the early stages of their existence become good evaluation data for those who are invested in similar resources. If top management includes strong human and social capital, access to external resources will be easier; these will have a positive influence on the selection of overnmental support systems; and, this proper support will also have a positive influence on the initial success of the venture company. The results revealed the following. First, it was found that when the educational level and functional background, (the top management human capital), are the output function, top management human capital had a significant influence on selection of governmental R&D support funds. Second, it was found that the internal social capital and external social capital, (the top management social capital), had a significant influence on selection of governmental R&D support tasks. Third, it was found that selection of the governmental R&D support tasks at the start of the venture company had a positive influence on the corporate financial performance such as sales, business profits, and the increase in workers; and, had a significant influence on nonfinancial performance such as market share, competitive position, product competitiveness, and the future product development. Conclusions - Selection of the governmental R&D support system is not recognized as part of the direct sales of a venture company in its early stages, but as it can reduce costs for technical development and helps significantly in creating test products and mass production, it has a positive influence on the company's financial performance and nonfinancial performance as a result. Therefore, companies should take great efforts to frequently be selected as a candidate in the governmental R&D support system, as it can help facilitate R&D that requires extensive funds. As a result, companies can expect effects such as job creation and patent applications and they can advance future product sales.

New polymeric host material for efficient organic electro phosphorescent devices

  • A polymeric host for triplet emitters composed of N-alkylcarbazole and tetramethylbenzene units was successfully synthesized. Efficient energy transfer was observed between this polymeric host and green phosphorescent dyes. The device fabricated using 5 wt% green 1 in the polymeric host as the emitting layer showed the best performance. Thin films of this host-guest system, exhibiting clear stripe patterns could be prepared through the LITI process. The patterned films were then used to fabricate electrophosphorescent devices, which show performance characteristics similar to those of spin-coated devices. The new host material is a good candidate to be used in polymer-based full-color electrophosphorescent light-emitting displays.

Radical Scavenging Activity and Content of Cynarin (1,3-dicaffeoylquinic acid) in Artichoke (Cynara scolymus L.)

  • The contents of total phenol and total flavonoid of artichoke (Cynara scolymus L.) were measured. The antioxidant activity of the artichoke was evaluated based on its potential as a scavenging the ABTS radical. These results showed the antioxidant activity of artichoke has a close relationship with the total flavonoid content. The compound showing antioxidant activity was isolated from the artichoke by repeated column chromatography and recrystallization. Based on the spectrometric studies, the compound was identified as 1,3-dicaffeoylquinic acid, known as cynarin. The content of cynarin from heads and leafs of the artichoke determined by $C_{18}$ reversed phase HPLC (high-performance liquid chromatography) coupled with photodiode array detector was 10.15 and 0.67 mg/g, respectively. This compound showed potent antioxidant activities against DPPH and ABTS radicals ($EC_{50}$ = 14.09 and 28.85 ${\mu}M$, respectively).

Effects of Fruit By-product Extracts Supplementation on Growth Performance and Nutrient Digestibility in Growing Pigs

  • A total of 96 pigs [(Landrace ${\times}$ Yorkshire) ${\times}$ Duroc] with an initial BW of $27.94{\pm}0.92kg$ were used in a 6-week experiment to determine the effects of dietary supplementation with fruit by-product extracts on growth performance and nutrient digestibility in growing pigs. Pigs were randomly allotted to four treatments : 1) CON (basal diet), 2) PRO (CON + 0.5% procyanidin), 3) HES (CON + 0.5% hesperidin), 4) TAN (CON + 0.5% tannin). There were six replications per treatment with four pigs per pen. Supplementation had no effect (p>0.05) on average daily gain, average daily feed intake, and G/F. The apparent total tract digestibility (ATTD) of dry matter and nitrogen was increased (p<0.05) in the HES treatment relative to the PRO treatment. Pigs fed the HES and TAN diets had greater (p<0.05) ATTD of energy than pigs fed PRO diet. The ATTD of ash was greatest (p<0.05) in HES treatments. In addition, the ATTD of calcium was greater (p<0.05) in HES treatments than in CON and PRO treatments. Overall, the results of this study indicated that dietary supplementation with 0.5% fruit by-products did not affect growth performance, but inclusion of 0.5% hesperidin increased nutrient digestibility in growing pigs.

A Case Study on the R&D Programs of Fighter & Attacker Aircraft (군용항공기 연구개발 사업 사례분석)

  • This paper describes a case study on the R&D programs of fighter and attacker aircraft such as F-22A, F/A-18E/F, and T/A-50. F-22A and F/A-18E/F were developed in same age. The performance of each program was, however extremely different. F-22A program results in a lot of cost overrun and schedule delay. On the other hand F/A-18E/F program met the cost, schedule, and performance goals. In the T/A-50 program with a super-sonic advanced trainer, T-50 was also developed successfully on planned cost and time by Korea Air-force and KAI. This paper derives key elements for the success of the military aircraft R&D program through lessons learned from th e case study. Each program is analyzed in terms of its background, planning and management.
