  • Disassembly and restoration work of Janghang-ri Stone Standing Buddha in the outdoor exhibition hall of Gyeongju National Museum were conducted for safe management of the collection due to problems like weathering of bonding materials by the outer environment, fixation of pollutants on the surface, and cracks by unidirectional load of rocks. A drawing was made through three-dimensional precise actual measurement, basic material research was conducted, and cement mortar and resin of the weathered part were removed. The restored part was bonded and restored by new stones using the same kind of rock. In addition, in order to prevent damages from microorganisms, fumigation treatment was made. It is under continuous observation.

  • Here is an introduction of the conservation process and storing method of 26 garments for exhibition among the excavated garments of Cheonngyeongunju(a princess) preserved in the National Museum of Korea. Before processing, the artifacts were investigated to find out the type of material and the damaged parts, and then surface and wet cleaning were conducted. After that, it were dried and fixed while held by hand for stability of the artifacts. When stored, the artifact was folded minimally in large parts to prevent damage and placed in a neutral box with buffers in between.

  • In National Central Museum, we recently preserved paper cultural assets, such as ancient maps, books and antique documents etc, to prepare "A Dynamic World of External Relations in Goryeo & Joseon Dynasty". The paper cultural assets generally react sensitively to their environments; temperature, humidity, light and physical force acting. Biological damages, which are caused by microbe, contraction, swelling and damage from insects occurred. Wrinkles on relics, which are made my physical force, stains on relics which are due to moisture, weakening of adhesive strength and damages from insects were found during the recent preservation handling. Therefore we are trying to find out any damage, which could be occurred in paper cultural assets and introduce brief emergency operation to prevent the damages and develop the preservation handling.

  • This article examines the conservation process of a donated Gourd-style jar (Object No. Geumja No.124), which was broken into several fragments (more than 60) in the past. After assessing the condition of the object, each of the fragments were re-attached, and missing areas were gap-filled and re-touched. The authors discuss considerations, which were taken into account during the decision making process. These include the integrity of the object and the section of treatment materials, such as the reversibility of adhesives and filling materials. After its conservation, the authors believe that the object is in a better condition and ready for display in the future.

  • The lacquer ware objects of Nangnang were treated for conservation and seven of them were studied on the manufacturing technic. When we examined them using microscopes and an SEM-EDS analysis, the lacquer layer was proved to consist of two parts: the ground and the upper lacquer. The ground coating was made of several mixed materials such as powdered bone and minerals. Many forms of powdered bone were observed. We could find out that HgS, PbO and AgS were used as pigments. We could also find out a specific process and materials were used for those objects, although we could not say definitely what they were because the number of the sample was not big enough.

  • This is a brief study on the influence of fumigation (using mixed gas of methyl bromide and ethylene oxide) on old paintings. Fumigation is principally used to prevent biological damage of objects. Thirteen objects, including old colored map from Chosǒn Dynasty and some paintings, were selected for this research. Before and after fumigation, color measurements were made and changes of pH value were measured. The result is that the fumigation did not affect on discoloration of colored area and acidity of paper, as far as the standard of application(such as concentration of gas, exposing time and ect.) of fumigation was kept.

  • Recently, several literary centers have been established and operated to professionally collect, preserve, manage, and utilize literature-related materials at domestic and foreign, the National Museum of Korean Literature will be opened for the first time in 2024. In this paper, at the time of opening the National Literary Museum, the current status and characteristics of the overall service of the National Literary Museum were reviewed based on prior research and advanced cases. For the case analysis, a total of 11 institutions were selected among national literary museums abroad and the status of each institution was analyzed according to the service elements provided, such as operational purpose and major services, exhibition services, library and archive services, educational programs and event services, research and publication services, and other convenience facilities services. Based on the research results, we explored implications that can be applied to the National Literary Museum in Korea, and cultural institutions such as libraries, museums and archives collaborated to discuss a comprehensive service direction to operate the National Literary Museum as a single complex cultural space. In order for the National Museum of Korean Literature to become a literary institution representing the country, it will be important to efficiently service literary resources by maximizing the unique characteristics of Korean literature through cooperation with other cultural institutions.

  • Plate armour is an important cultural property that reflects the ancient weaponry and the manufacturing technology of ironware as they are. Among the kinds of iron armour, horizontal plate armour has been very rarely excavated, and there are a few artifacts in their unimpaired shape like the plate armour excavated from Mangisanseong. This report reviews the manufacturing technology of ancient plate armour through its radiograph using appliable nondestructive irradiation and scientific conservation treatment. The seven-tiered plate armour excavated from Mangisanseong has ring hinge to open and shut the right side neck guard. The readout result of radiograph proved iron safety guard of Godaepan (a plate that links neck plate and horizontal plate) and leather safety guard of the right armpit with plate overlap and perforation interval; perforations that seem to have linked shoulder strap on wearing the armour are also observed. In particular, it is identified that the perforation and riveting technique avoided the connection of more than three plates with a rivet. This is an important material to illustrate the best use of function of plate armour overcoming its limit.

  • Indoor air quality(IAQ) in museum is very important for protection of cultural properties. In our study, we measured air pollutants($NO_x, NH_3, SO_2, O_3$, CO, $CO_2$, TSP), temperature and humidity to evaluate IAQ of national central museum. Indoor carbon dioxide and TSP concentrations were higher than outdoor concentrations. Temperature, huinidity and TSP had large deviation depending on air conditioning operates or not. Indoor gas phase pollutants except $CO_2$ were lower than outdoor concentrations, but $SO_2$ concentration was high in storage. $CO_2$ and TSP were influenced by the number of spectators.
