  • The recent rise in the unstructured data generated by social media has resulted in an increasing need to collect, store, search, analyze, and visualize it. These data cannot be managed effectively by using traditional data analysis methodologies because of their vast volume and unstructured nature. Therefore, many attempts are being made to analyze these unstructured data (e.g., text files and log files) by using commercial and noncommercial analytical tools. Especially, the attempt to discover meaningful knowledge by using text mining is being made in business and other areas such as politics, economics, and cultural studies. For instance, several studies have examined pending national issues by analyzing large volumes of texts on various social issues. However, it is difficult to create satisfactory information services that can identify R&D documents on specific national issues from among the various R&D resources. In other words, although users specify some words related to pending national issues as search keywords, they usually fail to retrieve the R&D information they are looking for. This is usually because of the discrepancy between the terms defining pending national issues and the corresponding terms used in R&D documents. We need a mediating logic to overcome this discrep 'ancy so that we can identify and package appropriate R&D information on specific pending national issues. In this paper, we use association analysis and social network analysis to devise a mediator for bridging the gap between the keywords defining pending national issues and those used in R&D documents. Further, we propose a methodology for packaging R&D information services for pending national issues by using the devised mediator. Finally, in order to evaluate the practical applicability of the proposed methodology, we apply it to the NTIS(National Science & Technology Information Service) system, and summarize the results in the case study section.

  • This study analyses the difference of contents and tones of arguments among three Korean major newspapers, the Kyunghyang Shinmoon, the HanKyoreh, and the Dong-A Ilbo. It is commonly accepted that newspapers in Korea explicitly deliver their own tone of arguments when they talk about some sensitive issues and topics. It could be controversial if readers of newspapers read the news without being aware of the type of tones of arguments because the contents and the tones of arguments can affect readers easily. Thus it is very desirable to have a new tool that can inform the readers of what tone of argument a newspaper has. This study presents the results of clustering and classification techniques as part of text mining analysis. We focus on six main subjects such as Culture, Politics, International, Editorial-opinion, Eco-business and National issues in newspapers, and attempt to identify differences and similarities among the newspapers. The basic unit of text mining analysis is a paragraph of news articles. This study uses a keyword-network analysis tool and visualizes relationships among keywords to make it easier to see the differences. Newspaper articles were gathered from KINDS, the Korean integrated news database system. KINDS preserves news articles of the Kyunghyang Shinmun, the HanKyoreh and the Dong-A Ilbo and these are open to the public. This study used these three Korean major newspapers from KINDS. About 3,030 articles from 2008 to 2012 were used. International, national issues and politics sections were gathered with some specific issues. The International section was collected with the keyword of 'Nuclear weapon of North Korea.' The National issues section was collected with the keyword of '4-major-river.' The Politics section was collected with the keyword of 'Tonghap-Jinbo Dang.' All of the articles from April 2012 to May 2012 of Eco-business, Culture and Editorial-opinion sections were also collected. All of the collected data were handled and edited into paragraphs. We got rid of stop-words using the Lucene Korean Module. We calculated keyword co-occurrence counts from the paired co-occurrence list of keywords in a paragraph. We made a co-occurrence matrix from the list. Once the co-occurrence matrix was built, we used the Cosine coefficient matrix as input for PFNet(Pathfinder Network). In order to analyze these three newspapers and find out the significant keywords in each paper, we analyzed the list of 10 highest frequency keywords and keyword-networks of 20 highest ranking frequency keywords to closely examine the relationships and show the detailed network map among keywords. We used NodeXL software to visualize the PFNet. After drawing all the networks, we compared the results with the classification results. Classification was firstly handled to identify how the tone of argument of a newspaper is different from others. Then, to analyze tones of arguments, all the paragraphs were divided into two types of tones, Positive tone and Negative tone. To identify and classify all of the tones of paragraphs and articles we had collected, supervised learning technique was used. The Na$\ddot{i}$ve Bayesian classifier algorithm provided in the MALLET package was used to classify all the paragraphs in articles. After classification, Precision, Recall and F-value were used to evaluate the results of classification. Based on the results of this study, three subjects such as Culture, Eco-business and Politics showed some differences in contents and tones of arguments among these three newspapers. In addition, for the National issues, tones of arguments on 4-major-rivers project were different from each other. It seems three newspapers have their own specific tone of argument in those sections. And keyword-networks showed different shapes with each other in the same period in the same section. It means that frequently appeared keywords in articles are different and their contents are comprised with different keywords. And the Positive-Negative classification showed the possibility of classifying newspapers' tones of arguments compared to others. These results indicate that the approach in this study is promising to be extended as a new tool to identify the different tones of arguments of newspapers.

  • The Seokgaejae section is located along a timber access road and a driveway across Bonghwa County, North Gyeongsang Province, and Samcheog city, Gangwon Province. Its stratigraphic column shows all of the ten strata of the lower Paleozoic Taebaek Group, Joseon Supergroup. The Seokgaejae section is proved to be scientifically important. Thirty-eight domestic/international journal papers have been published on this early Paleozoic stratigraphic site, and many distinguished researchers over the world have visited the site. However, the section has never been considered to be designated as a national natural monument and was not included in the adjacent Gangwon Paleozoic National Geopark due to management or administrative issues. Although the Seokgaejae section sufficiently satisfies many of the national natural monument criteria, designation for the natural monument may not be justified because of the facts that the outcrop was artificially exposed by road construction; the chance of destruction of the outcrop is relatively few; demage on the outcrop to some extent does not impair the intrinsic value of the section; and the geomorphological/landscape value of the section is low. The application of the recently modified geological heritage assessment model to the Seokgaejae section shows very high scores on the scientific/educational, intrinsic, and functional values. Based on the improved geological heritage grade standard, the Seokgaejae section conforms to the national-level protection criteria. It is strongly recommended to manage the Seokgaejae section as a principal geosite by including it in the Gangwon Paleozoic National Geopark. This case study on the Seokgaejae section also suggests that the process of application and endorsement of a national geopark need further improvement. As well as the improvement of the system or policy related to geological heritages, further efforts of the experts in various fields of geoscience are required in order for other geological heritages not to be neglected from now on.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this case study series was to introduce successful implant cases that used the palatal bone in patients with severe maxillary alveolar bone atrophy or defects. Case Presentation: In this case series study, a total of four patients underwent implant placement in the palatal bone of the maxilla. A total of 6 implants were installed using the palatine bone. The patients' ages ranged from 40 to 73 years with an average age of 63.5 years. The patients had maxillary sinus-related diseases, such as maxillary sinusitis, oroantral fistula, and dentigerous cysts, prior to implantation. To achieve initial stability, the implants were placed on the palatal side, and buccally tilted. The average postoperative recovery period was 8 months. No postoperative complications occurred in any of the cases, and the approach was used without reported issues. Conclusion: Implant treatment by securing the initial fixation in the palatal bone is a good alternative when an implant must be installed in a patient who requires extensive and invasive bone graft.

  • Dynamic object detection is essential for ensuring safe and reliable autonomous driving. Recently, light detection and ranging (LiDAR)-based object detection has been introduced and shown excellent performance on various benchmarks. Although LiDAR sensors have excellent accuracy in estimating distance, they lack texture or color information and have a lower resolution than conventional cameras. In addition, performance degradation occurs when a LiDAR-based object detection model is applied to different driving environments or when sensors from different LiDAR manufacturers are utilized owing to the domain gap phenomenon. To address these issues, a sensor-fusion-based object detection and classification method is proposed. The proposed method operates in real time, making it suitable for integration into autonomous vehicles. It performs well on our custom dataset and on publicly available datasets, demonstrating its effectiveness in real-world road environments. In addition, we will make available a novel three-dimensional moving object detection dataset called ETRI 3D MOD.

  • The settlement prediction during the design phase is primarily conducted using theoretical methods. However, measurement-based settlement prediction methods that predict future settlements based on measured settlement data over time are primarily used during construction due to accuracy issues. Among these methods, the hyperbolic method is commonly used. However, the existing hyperbolic method has accuracy issues and statistical limitations. Therefore, a weighted nonlinear regression hyperbolic method has been proposed. In this study, two weighting methods were applied to the weighted nonlinear regression hyperbolic method to compare and analyze the accuracy of settlement prediction. Measured settlement plate data from two sites located in Busan New Port were used. The settlement of the remaining sections was predicted by setting the regression analysis section to 30%, 50%, and 70% of the total data. Thus, regardless of the weight assignment method, the settlement prediction based on the hyperbolic method demonstrated a remarkable increase in accuracy as the regression analysis section increased. The weighted nonlinear regression hyperbolic method predicted settlement more accurately than the existing linear regression hyperbolic method. In particular, despite a smaller regression analysis section, the weighted nonlinear regression hyperbolic method showed higher settlement prediction performance than the existing linear regression hyperbolic method. Thus, it was confirmed that the weighted nonlinear regression hyperbolic method could predict settlement much faster and more accurately.
