This paper examines the impact of gender on access to debt finance among Vietnamese enterprises. The paper investigates data and variables retrieved from the World Bank Enterprise Survey dataset using five Probit models. The regression results suggest that there exist more unfavourable debt financing conditions for women-led firms (WLF), measured as a lower probability of having loan applications fully approved. Firm's age, working sector, and perception of access to finance as a difficulty are found to have explanatory power on the discrimination. More importantly, the perception of debt finance as a difficulty or firms' level of confidence significantly explains the variance of the dependent variable of probability of loan approval, or gender effect would be more pronounced if the firm already has a low level of confidence. The paper also contributes in testing for the gender effect on Vietnamese enterprises from different sectors and scale, unlike other prior research papers focusing on specific sectors and/or small and medium enterprises only. The findings are highly useful for Vietnamese credit institutions to set out a specific business policy to attract more WLFs and help promoting gender equality in the working environment, especially in debt financing, which is often neglected in existing regulation and policy frameworks.

This study designed a data model linked to Wikidata and examined its applicability to increase the utilization of the digital archive records of the National Debt Redemption Movement, registered as World Memory Heritage, and implications were derived by analyzing the existing metadata, thesaurus, and semantic network graph. Through analysis of the original text of the National Debt Redemption Movement records, key data model classes for linking with Wikidata, such as record item, agent, time, place, and event, were derived. In addition, by identifying core properties for linking between classes and applying the designed data model to actual records, the possibility of acquiring abundant related information was confirmed through movement between classes centered on properties. Thus, this study's result showed that Wikidata's strengths could be utilized to increase data usage in local archives where the scale and management of data are relatively small. Therefore, it can be considered for application in a small-scale archive similar to the National Debt Redemption Movement digital archive.
As there is a growing concern about the steady increase in the consumer debt and its potential consequences on individuals and families, this study examined the association between personal debt and the risk of domestic violence, which in this study is referred to as violence between man and woman who have a spousal relationship. We used the data from the Korea Welfare Panel Study collected from 2009 to 2016. We applied a generalized estimating equation approach for the analysis of panel data. The results show that the higher the ratio of personal debt to disposable income and the ratio of debt payment to disposal income is, the greater the risk of domestic violence. While the debt to income ratio played a role regarding was related to a heightened risk of domestic violence among the poor group, the debt payment to income ratio was associated with a higher risk of domestic violence among the non-poor group. Implications of the study were discussed.
In this paper, we examine whether the poor performance of distressed firms where banks take equity may occur due to agency problems in banks. By adopting the debt-equity swap, the bank can effectively postpone the occurrence of bad loans form the failure of the distressed firm. As a result, firms with more debt will be more likely to obtain debt-equity swap, regardless of their probabilities of revival. This is not because they are more profitable, but because they have more debt and thus it poses greater risk to the bank. We empirically look into these predictions with the data of 44 workout firms and find the following results. First, debt-equity swap appears to be more applicable especially when the distressed firms are large and when BIS of related banks is low. Specifically, the conditional probability of 'large firms' based on debt-equity swap is 65.52% and the conditional probability of 'bad banks' based on debt-equity swap is 75.86%. Also, as predicted, the performance of these debt-equity firms is poorer than that of non debt-equity firms. The conditional probability of 'large firms' based on posterior failure is 84.62% and the conditional probability of 'bad banks' based on posterior failure is 84.62%. This is consistent with our predictions and is also confirmed through results of the logit regression analysis. Second, when the restructuring is led by 'good banks', the performance of equity-swap firms is superior to that of non equity-swap firms. This result is consistent with that of James(1995). Hence, we can conclude that there may be some agency problems in restructuring distressed firm-especially when distressed firms are large and banks are bad. And these agency problems can reconcile the difference between James' results and Park, Lee, and Jang's.

In this paper, we examine the impact of family ownership mechanism on the firm's debt policy. Our results show that family firms tend to have a lower debt level, compared with non-family firms. Foreign investors are found to lead to a reduction in the firm's debt level through their monitoring incentives for dominating large shareholders. The firm's profitablily is related to a lower level of debt, whereas higher tangible assets and firm size are positively associated with high debt ratios due to the possibility of large collateral assets. Some implications are that foreign investors can reduce the agency costs of dominating large shareholders in family firms through monitoring activities, thus enhancing the efficiency of business decision-makings.

This study analyzed how Korean firms' recapitalization affects their capital structure decision and firm value. Recapitalization was categorized into three groups according to the influence of the debt to equity ratio: debt ratio-increasing-recapitalization(capital reduction with refund, cash dividend), debt ratio-unchanging-recapitalization (capital reduction without refund, retirement of repurchased stocks), and debt ratio-decreasing-recapitalization(exercise the rights for convertible bonds, bond with stock warrants, exchangeable bonds and stock options). This article highlights how the relationship between the firms' recapitalization and the capital structure decision driven by the change in debt to equity ratio through the recapitalization should affect the firm value. The whole recapitalization sample used for this analysis comprised 22,814 enterprises listed on the Korea Exchange that were analyzed over the 16-year period from 2000 to 2015. To summarize the results of this Panel Data Analysis, firstly, when a firm executes debt ratio-increasing-recapitalization and debt ratio-decreasing-recapitalization at the period of t-1, the debt to equity ratio, which is increased or decreased, should affect the firm's debt capacity in the same period, then, at the period of t, the firm establishes a leverage policy to readjust the debt to equity ratio the other way around. These adjustments of debt-paying-ability from the leverage policy, including the capital structure decision, finally affect the firm value. Secondly, when a firm implements the debt ratio-unchanging-recapitalization in the period of t-1, the debt to equity ratio, which is neutral, should not affect the firm's capital structure decision. But, the firm value is positively affected by the influence of that recapitalization. Conclusively, we acknowledge a firm which carries out the recapitalization balances its capital structure to the optimal level of leverage and that the capital structure decision positively affects the corporate value.
Based on a previous literature about hospital capital structure(Shyam- Sunder & Myers, 1999), this study attempted comparison and analysis on whether the forecast of trade-off and pecking order theory could be validated in hospital's capital structure. First, this study analyzed whether hospitals follow the priority for each capital source as suggested by pecking order theory under lack of capital running in hospital. Next, it analyzed whether debt level is regressed on the average to target debt level so as to verify the validity of trade-off theory. Finally, it also analyzed possible associations between debt level and determinants of capital structure as adopted in static trade-off theory, so as to verify relative advantages of these two theories about hospital capital structure. The analysis over whole period showed that both trade-off theory and pecking order theory isn't supported particularly. This mean that each hospital's financing behaviors is different and that has not dominant financing behaviors. In the midst of separation of dispensary from medical practice, medical institutions in Korea first finances funds required using retained earnings and then use liabilities. however pecking order theory is supported, the preference of long-term liabilities and short-term liabilities is not clear. In addition, considering that debt level is in no average regression to target debt ratio, it is found that hospital capital structure following trade-off theory turns into that subject to pecking order theory via the separation of dispensary from medical practice.
This paper examines the impact of ESG activities of domestic shipping companies on the cost of debt. It is known that companies with large information asymmetry tend to have high costs of debt. Corporate ESG activities have been identified as an effective means of reducing information asymmetry. By actively engaging in ESG activities, companies can lower the cost of debt by reducing information asymmetry. Therefore, this study aims to investigate whether these mechanisms, which have been observed in previous studies, also apply to domestic shipping companies. Multiple regression analysis is conducted on KOSP I-listed shipping companies from2010 to 2022. The cost of debt is set as the dependent variable, while the ESG rating is used as the explanatory variable. The analysis reveals that companies with a high level of ESG activities generally have a lower cost of debt. However, it is important to note that ESG activities of shipping companies do not seem to have a significant impact on their cost of debt. In fact, the level of ESG activities among domestic shipping companies is not particularly high (Hong, 2024). Despite these findings, domestic shipping companies should still strive for sustainable management to adapt to the rapidly changing business environment and meet the demands of the modern era. ESG management is a representative method for achieving sustainability. Therefore, shipping companies should not only focus on reducing the cost of debt but also on opening up the closed industry culture and communicating with capital market participants for sustainable growth. It is crucial for these companies to listen to the voices of stakeholders and embrace a holistic approach to sustainability.

Korea is a record powerhouse nation with the largest number of Memory of the World in the Asia-Pacific; however, active utilization of archives for future generations has been lacking. Therefore, this study sought to enhance interest in archives and utilize them directly in school lessons. The Korean National Debt Redemption Movement's archives, which were selected as a Memory of the World, were used in the school lessons, and based on them, a library collaborative instruction design was developed. A library collaborative instruction is a collaboration between the high school Korean history subject and the library information literacy instruction, designed in three sessions. Through the literature research-based design, a library collaborative instruction plan, teaching and learning plan, and activity sheets were derived. Implementing this designed library collaborative instruction is expected to stimulate interest in the Memory of the World, linking curriculum and archives at schools and significantly expanding the users of the archives into teachers and students.
This paper empirically tests pecking order theory. Korean listed firms are used as the samples. On the whole we find supportive results for pecking order theory. The fixed effect model on the whole period shows that as pecking order theory suggests that debt ratio decreases as cash flow. ROA, physical assets, and firm size increase. Again, it is shown that corporate debt ratio significantly decreases as cash flow or ROA increases in every sub-sample, which coincides with the prediction of pecking order theory. Corporate debt ratio significantly decreases as physical assets or jinn size increases in case of the whole sample, pre-financial crisis period, and the sub-samples by q-ratio, which also supports the prediction of pecking order theory. Statistical significance of the coefficients of physical assets or firm size completely disappears after Korean financial crisis. Perhaps it is because the role of physical assets or firm size as a mitigator of information asymmetry significantly weakens after the financial crisis as Korean financial market becomes more transparent. For small firms only size variable is negatively and significantly related with debt to assets. It seems that size is an important factor for smaller firms in making financing decision.
