  • In order to obtain the genetic information on the quantitative characters of black seeded soybeans, which would be needed to improve selection efficiency for breeding high yielding genotype, 45 varieties of black seeded soybeans collected in Chonnam, Korea were grown and variations of several important characters were observed. Heritability of each observed character, phenotypic and genotypic correlations among the characters and contribution of each yield component on grain yield through path coefficient analysis were estimated. Both number of pods per plant and 100-seed weight showed not only high heritability but also highly significant phenotypic and genotypic correlation with seed yield, and hence it was desirable to select plants with more number of pods per plant and higher 100-seed weight than raise seed yield of black seeded soybeans collected in Chonnam. In addition, number of pods per and 100-seed weight were proved to be the most influential variables on the viability of seed yield by path coefficient analysis. Since these showed the high heritability of number of pods per plant, selection of plants with higher 100-seed weight would be more efficient for breeding high yielding genotype.

  • Combined with expert interviews and questionnaire investigations, this paper aims at analyzing the different characteristics of the animated characters Spider-Man from Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse based on Hunlock Effect, in order to provide appropriate guidance for animation characters designers and limited inspiration for creative practices. First, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is chosen as the case to analyze 6 Spider-Man with different personalities, who appear at the same time. Then, Spider-Man's characteristics are analyzed through interviews with experts. At last, the key study focuses on the influence of environmental factors on the formation of Spider-Man's roles in the theory of Hunlock Effect, in light of the principle of personality formation in psychology. From the perspective of psychology, interdisciplinary study on animated characters provides scientific and effective support for animation character design, and increases the fascination of animation characters' personalities.

  • Seventy-two lichen specimens of Cetrelia collected in South Korea since 2003 were examined by both phenotypic and phylogenetic analyses. The phenotypic analysis was based on morphological and chemical characters, and the phylogenetic analysis was based on nrDNA ITS sequences. The result suggested that the presence and absence of isidia, soredia, lobules and medullar reaction C+ or C- are the important characters in the taxonomy of this genus. Four species of Cetrelia, C. chicitae, C. braunsiana, C. japonica, and C. pseudolivetorum have been identified in this study. Description of each species is presented with morphological and chemical characters. A key to the Cetrelia species is also presented.

  • In order for further systematic maintenance of silkworm stocks kept in Korea we analyzed character quality of a diverse array of silkworm strains originated from several sericulture-practicing countries. The analysis of about ten qualitative characters from 67 strains (13 of Japanese strains, 15 of Chinese strains, 14 of European strains, 6 of Korean and Tropical strains, and 19 of unknown origin) revealed a significant difference in the ten different qualitative characters among silkworm strains. In the analysis of quantitative characters, Japanese and European strains were highest in hatchability, the Korean and Tropical strains were highest in pupation rate, and unknown origin and Chinese strains were highest in cocoon yield and number of egg laid. With the connection of molecular genetic analysis the current data may provide the advanced ground for further systematic maintenance of valuable genetic resources of silkworms, although more breeds should be investigated for further complete pictures.

  • Seasonal variation in size and number of floral structures was examined in two massachusetts populations of chelidonium major, a self-compatible herb. All floral charcters except for anther number per flower declind significantly during a 3 week period. However, temporal patterns were not identical among characters or between popolations. The result indicate that floral characters varied in conjunction with flower diameter, but that the pattern of changes in floral characters in response to environments may not be easy to predict. Principal components analysis was conducted to environments may not be easy to predict. principal compenents analysis was conducted tl identify the functional relationship among floral male function, and female function, respectively, perhaps reflecting the functional distinction of floral characters. Based on this pattern, the relative allocation to sexual structures within flowers was examined: male allocation was relatively greater than female allocation eary or in the middle of flowering season, depending upon populations. Temporalvariation in relative allocation within flowers was not independent of seed tield components:; different combinations of the size and number of floral characters were correlated with different seed yield components, for example, either seed size or number per fruit, during a season. in particular, allocations to attractive and male structures were highly correlated with mean seed weight only earlier in the season. These result provide some evidence that flowering phenolgy is an important comportant to be considered in the study of sexual allocation.

  • The morphological characters were observed in six taxa in the genus Dioscorea of Korea (D. polystachya, D. japonica, D. nipponica, D. quinqueloba, D. tenuipes, and D. dokoro). The underground structure and the formation of bulbil were useful characters for separating sect. Enanatiophyllum from sect. Stenophora. The important characters for discriminating taxonomic entities were as follows: the position of the anther and the shape of the pistil in the microstructural characters, including the protuberance of the base of the petiole, the shape and color of the flower, the shape of the fruit, and the shape of the seed wing. Based on the results, a key to Korean Dioscorea is provided and the distribution of these species in Korea is described.

  • Since Manchu characters are written vertically and are connected without spaces within a word, a preprocessing process is required to separate the character area and the units that make up the characters before recognizing the characters. In this paper, we describe a preprocessing method that extracts the character area and cuts off the unit of the character. Unlike existing research that presupposes a method of recognizing each word or character unit, or recognizing the remaining part after removing the stem of a continuous character, this method cuts the character into each recognizable unit. It can be applied to the method of recognizing letters by combining the units. Through an experiment, the effectiveness of this method was verified.

  • Five commercially valuable Korean Veneroid, Protothaca jedoensis, Ruditapes philippinarum, Saxidomus purpuratus, Cyclina sinensis and Meretrix lusoria were recognized by comparing internal and external morphological characters. As length of the primary tooth was directly grown proportional to shell size but all other characters were not measured according to size of shell. Hence, the morphological characters of these Veneroids may be estimated from the size of the unique primary tooth and it might be enough to be a good criterion for identification of species among Veneriods. Numerical index of hinge plate length of these species was assessed systematically, irrespective of measuring the length, height and width of the shell. The highest internal and external morphological similarity was observed between P. jedoensis and R. philippinarum and the lowest similarity was observed between P. jedoensis and M. lusoria. These similarities may be affected by multiple environmental factors as well as genetic characters. For artificial seed production of P. jedoensis, R. philppinarum, a closest relative among the five species, must be focussed.

  • In today's rapidly growing contemporary society, there is a tendency for demand to automate production processes by utilizing the vision system. In general, image recognition is mainly concerned with embossed characters such as license plates, and research on recognition of intaglio characters is very limited. Especially, intaglio characters, which are marked on rubber related products such as tire surfaces, have difficulty in recognizing characters or numbers through image because the difference in brightness with surrounding is not so large. In this paper, we propose a system to improve the recognition rate of characters marked on intaglio rubber products such as tire surfaces. Also, it can be applied flexibly according to the lighting environment. Through the proposed system, production and inventory management and defect detection can be processed quickly by applying to the production process of tire and rubber products.

  • Anatomical characters of the Bupleurum latissimum Nakai, an endemic species of Korea, were investigated to confirm its phylogenetic relationships. Compare to other species with anatomical characters, B. latissimum is very similar with B, euphorbioides and B, longeradiatum in point of lacking of pith in the stem, shape of involucres, number of vascular bundles in radical leaf and cauline leaf, and lacking stomata in adaxial leaf surface. The other hand, protruded pollen aperture character appears in B. latissimum and B. euphorbioides. On the based of anatomical characters, therefore, B. latissimum has closest relationships with B. euphorbioides and B. longeradiatum. It also needs molecular study including Asian species in order to confirm phylogenetic position and speciation process apparently.
