Authors devised an objective test for nasal resonatory disorders using a vibratory sensor(Piezoelectric receiver) which is relatively cheap. The vibratory sensor was covered with duralumin to eliminate contamination of acoustic sound except a small hole which is attached on ala nasi during the test. Electrical signals front the vibratory sensor and the microphone while the subject is phonating vowel/a/ and nasal consonant /ng/ and phonating 8 syllable sentence /papa/ passage and /mama/ passage were digitized with n 12 bit A/D converter. For the evaluation of the hypernasality, the ratio of /ng/ to /a/ and /mama/ passage to /papa/ passage were used instead of individual values to reduce the observational error. For the evaluation of the hyponasality, the cul-de-sac resonation was induced by obstructing the nasal aperture of the ipsilateral side with the finger. In the normal control group, the ratio of /ng/ to /a/ and /mama/ passage to /papa/ passage was larger than 8. In the hypernasality with nasal emission group. the ratio was decreased markedly(p<0.01). When the nasal aperture was obstructed with the finger, the vibratory signals of /a/ and /ng/ were increased markedly in the control group and hypernasality group(p<0.01). However, in the hyponasality group(severe), the increment was minimal. So this system can be used to detect the nasal resonatory disorders objectively and differentiate the hypernasality front hyponasality easily.
The purpose of this study is to classify the tobacco names in the world, to investigate the regional distribution of the classified type, and to show origin of names according to the type. The names of tobacco used in this study was 50. The type of tobacco names was classified by the presence or absence of nasal sound(morn) on the first syllable, the Number of syllable, and the structure of consonants and vowels of tobacco names. Type I (Dambago) has the nasal sound on the first syllable. The proportion of Type I(Dambago) was 28%. And the rest(Type I~Type V ; 72%) has no nasal sound. Type II(Tabaco) has three syllables, and its proportion was 20%. Type III(Tabac) has the two syllables and the structure of T+vowels+B+vowels. And its proportion was 30%. Type IV(Tutun) has the two syllables and the structure of T+vowels+T+vowels. And its proportion was 12%. Type V(Duhan) has the two syllables and the structure of D+vowels+H(V)+vowels. And its proportion was 10%. The world's most widely distributed type was Type I(Dambago). regional distribution of the world's tobacco names were clustered by the type. 72% of Type I(Dambago) was distributed in Asia. The etymology of Type I(Dambago) was only 14% Tambaku and the other is not yet known. The etymology of Type I(Dambago) seems to be derived from the Haitian Tambaku(meaning a tobacco pipe). 88% of Type II(Tabaco) and III(Tabac) were distributed in Europe. The etymology of Type II(Tabaco) and Type III(Tabac) were 84% Spanish "Tabaco". 100% of Type IV(Tutun) and V(Duhan) were distributed in Europe. The etymology of Type IV(Tutun) and Type V(Duhan) were 100% Turkish tutun and duhan, respectively. This finding suggests that the etymology of Type I(Dambago) is certainly may be Haitian "Tambaku(meaning a tobacco pipe)".
Objective : Essential oil inhalation and He-Ne laser treatment has become increasingly available in children with nasal diseases. But the reports on the effect and prognosis have been poor. In this study, we analyzed the treatment effect, recurrence rate and the degree of recurrent symptoms. Materials/Methods: 23 children(2-10 year-old) with nasal diseases, who received essential oil inhalation with He-Ne laser treatment at least 10 times in our hospital from January 1st 2001 to December 31th 2002 were studied. Result : Ten cases are male & thirteen cases are female. The average of age was 4.91 year-old. The most frequency symptoms are nasal discharge (82.6%), nasal obstruction (78.3%), cough (47.8%), secretion sound (39.1%), sneezing (17.4%). Average numbers of treatment period, interval and treatment times are 71.79 days, 4.06 days, 18.13 times respectively. Of the 23 children, 14 children were in 'all symptom improved' at the remedial ends, and 22 children relapsed. In the degree of recurrent symptoms, 15 children were in 'more improved then before-treatment and not equal to directly remedial ends'. No case was in 'worse than before-treatment'. The final result of treatment, 6 children keep the degree of remedial ends, on the other hand 17 children are not. Conclusions : Even though, the recurrence rate was high, this combined treatment improve nasal symptoms. The final assessment is good, when the treatment-result is good, when the treatment interval is regular and when parent's are cooperative. If the symptoms continue a whole year, the result is not so good.

Purpose: This study was conducted to identify the personality type, problematic drinking pattern, and stress coping style of the nasal bone fracture patients by comparing those with general fracture patients. Methods: 50 nasal bone fracture patients due to violence and 50 general fracture patients due to simple trauma, such as fall and traffic accident were conveniently selected. Results: The study results showed that nasal bone fracture patients due to violence significantly presented higher level of A type personality and more problematic drinking pattern than general fracture patients due to simple trauma. Stress coping style, however, did not show significant difference between two groups. Conclusion: In order to prepare prevention strategies for basal bone fracture in the future, health education alter problematic drinking habit to sound drinking pattern may be offered and provided nursing interventions tailored to A type personality.
It is widely known that the Japanese alveolar nasal (n) is affected by adjacent vowels in most positions, that is, the variants of the alveolar (n) occur conditionally. The Japanese (n) is palatalized under the influence of vowel (i) or palatal (j). In the articulation of (ni), for instance, the tip and sides of the tongue make wide contact with the palate. It is interesting to know how palatalization occurs and varies during the production in different contexts. In my presentation, the actual realization of the palatalized alveolar nasal in different contexts is examined and clarified by consider me the Electro-palatographic data and examining the articulatory feel ins and auditory impression. As a result, palatalized (equation omitted) occurs either word-initially or inter-vocalically. (equation omitted) in (equation omitted) and (equation omitted) has great palatality. When conditioned by (j), the (equation omitted) in (equation omitted), (equation omitted) and (equation omitted) has full palatality. In each sound the average number of contacted electrodes of the Electro-palatograph at maximum tongue-palate contact is 63 or 100% of the total. To summarize the experimental data, articulatory feel ins and auditory impression, it can be concluded that the (n) followed by or hemmed in (i), (j) is a palatalized nasal (equation omitted).
It is widely hewn that the Japanese alveolar nasal [n] is affected by adjacent vowels in most positions, that is, the variants of the alveolar [n] occur conditionally. The Japanese [n] is palatalized under the influence of vowel [i] or palatal [j]. In the articulation of 'に', for instance, the tip and sides of the tongue make wide contact with the palate. It is interesting to know how palatalization occurs and varies during the production in different contexts. In my presentation the actual realization of the palatalized alveolar nasal in different contexts is examined and clarified by considering the Electro-palatographic data and examining the articulatory feeling and auditory impression. As a result, palatalized [${\eta}$] occurs either word-initially- or inter-vocalically. [${\eta}$] in [${\eta}$i] and 'いに'[$i{\eta}$] has great palatality. When conditioned by [j], the [${\eta}$] in 'にゃ'[${\eta}$ja], 'にょ'[${\eta}jo$] and 'にゅ'[${\eta}jw$] has full palatality. In each sound the average number of contacted electrodes of the Electro-palatograph at maximum tongue-palate contact is 63 or 100% of the total. Background and Objectives: It has been suggested that tonsillectomy possibly causes changes of voice because the morphology of the vocal tract is altered. This may cause serious problems for professional voice users. Materials and Method: Subjects were 26 patients. The oral and nasal sound spectrum of oral vowel /a/, /e/ and /i/ were measured before and after tonsillectomy. The formant frequencies and intensities for oral and nasal spectra were compared. The nasality and fundamental frequencies for oral vowel were measured. Results: The first formant frequencies for oral spectra of all vowels were not changed after surgery, but the second formant frequencies were increased significantly after surgery in the vowel /e/ and /i/. The first and second formant intensities for oral spectra were increased significantly after surgery in the all vowels. The first and second formant frequencies for nasal spectra of all vowels were not changed after surgery, but their intensities for nasal spectra were increased after surgery. The nasalities for oral vowel were not changed after surgery. Conclusion : Tonsillectomy appeared to change the spectral features of oral and nasal components of oral vowel, especially spectral intensities.
As one of the main purpose of the physical management of cleft palate is to provide for the anatomic and physiologic requisites for speech, the speech must be as one of the criteria for determining when physical management has been achieved. But there is no objective methods to evaluate the speech of cleft palate patients. The authors tried to analyze the speech of adult cleft palate patients using sound spectrog raphy and compared with normal adults. The results were obtained as follows ; 1. In Vowels, cleft palate patients of both sexes showed reduction of frequency of the first and second formant as compared to normal. There was minimal difference in front vowels (i, e, ae) 2. In consonants, cleft palate patients showed reduction of frequency of the first formant in both sexes but reduction of frequency of the second formant was noticed only in fe- male patients. 3. There was no statistical difference in sound spectrograph between plosive, fricative, africative, nasal, and glide consonants.

Purpose : The duration of speech segments reflects children's speech motor development. The purpose of this study was to determine whether segmental sound and word duration varies by age among preschool children. Methods : A total of 60 children aged 4~5 years participated in this study. Participants took the picture-naming test to produce single-word speech data. The duration of the consonant at the initial position of the word and the final position of the word, the voice onset time of plosive, the duration of the vowel following the initial consonant, and the duration of the word were measured. Results : As age increased, the duration of the initial consonant, the duration of the word, and the voice onset time decreased significantly. The main effects of age, manner of articulation, and place of articulation on the duration of the initial consonant were significant. The duration of consonants in the nasal sound and plosives and the duration of bilabial and alveolar sound differed significantly between groups. The main effects of age and vocal type on voice onset time were significant. The main effect of age on the duration of the consonant in the final position of word and on the duration of the vowel were not statistically significant. Conclusion : The results of this study showed that the duration of segmental sound and the word were associated with speech development between 4 and 5 years old. Accordingly, duration of the segmental sound and the word may serve as an acoustic cue as they reflect speech development and speech motor control maturity.
