Fast tool servo (FTS) is an enabling technology to fabricate various shapes of functional surface geometries in a precise and controllable manner. FTS can be also employed as a straightforward and efficient surface treatment way of making such products more durable. In this work, process characteristics using high-precision FTS-based surface texturing were qualitatively and quantitatively investigated to provide a class of surface design rule. The morphologies of surfaces processed with different conditions were first examined by observing the resultant 2D/3D surface profiles. In addition, the effects of the surface treatment using FTS on hardness and wear properties were characterized and compared to those without treatment.
Many researchers have tried to improve the tribological characteristics of lubricant by adding various nano particles in the base lubricant. But the reliability evaluation of the lubricants are rarely performed in its real operation condition. In this study, the physical property and the tribological characteristics of the graphite nano lubricant were evaluated and compared with raw lubricant after thermal degrading. In order to evaluate the tirbological characteristics, the disk-on-disk tribotester was adopted to measure the friction coefficient of the graphite nano lubricants. Also the temperature variations of friction surfaces were measured by the thermocouple installed on the fixed plate in the test chamber of the tribotester. The kinematic viscosity was measured using a capillary viscometer on the temperatures of 40, 60 and $80^{\circ}C$. The results showed that the graphite nano lubricant had lower friction coefficient and less wear on the friction surfaces than raw lubricant. After thermally degrading, the friction coefficients of graphite nano lubricant increased, but the friction coefficients after thermal degradation were still maintained lower than those of raw lubricant.

To enhance the cutting performance of high speed steel(HSS) endmill, single and multilayer coating is applied on the substrated of the HSS endmill. Coating material reduces cutting force and enhances resistance against abrasive wear. This paper presents the physical vapour deposition(PVD) coating technology and evaluate the PVD coated HSS endmill. The performance of coated HSS endmills are fifteen times better than uncoated HSS endmill on proposed cutting conditions. The TiAlN monolayer coated endmills(futura nano coating) are better than those of multilayer coated endmills(futura coating) on machined surface and tool wear.

High velocity oxy-fuel thermally sprayed coating of the WC-Co cermet material is a well-established process for modifying the surface properties of the structural components exposed to the corrosive and wear attacks. The hard WC phase in the coating resists to the wear while the soft metallic Co increases the adhesive and cohesive bonding properties. The coating properties deposited by the HVOF process are greatly dependent on the feedstock materials and processing parameters. The effects of the feedstock material and process coating parameters including the in-flight particle parameters and resultant coating microstructures were observed in this paper.

Chemically modified multiwalled carbon nanotubes with acids were incorporated into a epoxy matrix by in situ polymerization process, to improve the transfer of mechanical load through chemical bonds, which were demonstrated by infrared spectroscopy. And the mechanical properties of epoxy/carbon nanotube composites were measured to investigate the role of carbon nanotubes. The epoxy/carbon nanotube composites shows higher tensile strength and wear resistance than existing epoxy, with 1 or 2 wt. % addition of functionalized carbon nanotubes. The tensile strength with 7 wt. % carbon nanotibes is increased by a 28% and the wear resistance in exceptionally increased by an outstanding 100 times.

The Ti-Si-N coating layers were synthesized on SKD 11 steel substrate by a DC reactive magnetron co-sputtering technique with separate Ti and Si targets. The high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analyses for the coating layers revealed that microstructure of Ti-Si-N layer was nanocomposite, consisting of nano-sized TiN crystallites surrounded by amorphous $Si_3$$N_4$ phase. The highest hardness value of about 39 GPa was obtained at the Si content of ~11at.%, where the microstructure had fine TiN crystallites (about 5nm in size) dispersed uniformly in amorphous matrix. As the Si content in Ti-Si-N films increased, the TiN crystallites became from aligned to randomly oriented microstructure, finer, and fully penetrated by amorphous phase. Free Si appeared in the layers due to the deficit of nitrogen source at higher Si content. Friction coefficient and wear rate of the Ti-Si-N coating layer significantly decreased with increase of relative humidity. The self-lubricating tribe-layers such as $SiO_2$ or (OH)$Si_2$ seemed to play an important role in the wear behavior of Ti-Si-N film against steel.

An electroless deposition method was used to modify the surface properties of rice husk ceramic particles (RHC) by depositing nano-nickel on the surface of the RHC (Ni-RHC). The dry tribological performances of aluminum matrix composite adobes containing different contents of RHC and Ni-RHC particles have been investigated using a micro-tribometer. Results showed that the Ni-RHC particles substantially improved both the friction and wear properties of the Ni-RHC/aluminum matrix adobes. The optimal concentration was determined to be 15 wt% for both the RHC and Ni-RHC particles. The improvements in the tribological properties of aluminum adobes including the Ni-RHC were ascribed to friction-induced peeling off of Ni coating and formation of protection layer on the wear zone, both of which led to low friction and wear volume.

Surface modified carbon nanotubes were applied into the epoxy composites to investigate its tribological property. Carbon nanotubes reinforced epoxy composites were fabricated by casting. Effects to the tribological property of loading concentrations and types of surface modification of carbon nanotubes were investigated under sliding condition using linear reciprocal sliding wear tester. The results show that the small amount of carbon nanotubes into the epoxy exhibited lower weight loss than the pure epoxy. It is concluded that the effect of an enormous aspect ratio of carbon nanotubes surface area which wider than conventional fillers that react as interface for stress transfer. As increased the contents of carbon nanotubes, the weight loss from the wear test was reduced. And the surface modified carbon nanotubes show better tribological property than as produced carbon nanotubes. It is due that a surface modification of carbon nanotubes increases the interfacial bonding between carbon nanotubes and epoxy matrix through chemical bonding. Changes in worn surface morphology are also observed by optical microscope and SEM for investigating wear behaviors. Carbon nanotubes in the epoxy matrix near the surface are exposed, because it becomes the lubricating working film on the worn surface. It reduces the friction and results in the lower surface roughness morphology in the epoxy matrix as increasing the contents of the carbon nanotubes.

The demand for low-friction, wear and corrosion resistant components, which operate under severe conditions, has directed attentions to advanced surface engineering technologies. The Filtered Vacuum Arc Cathode Deposition (FVACD) process has demonstrated atomically smooth surface at relatively high deposition rates over large surface areas. Preparation of Ti-Si-C-N nanocomposite coatings on (100) Si and stainless steel substrates with tetramethylsilane (TMS) gas pressures to optimize the film preparation conditions. Ti-S-C-N coatings were characterized using X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, nanoindentation, Rockwell C indentation and ball-on-disk wear tests. The XRD results have confirmed phase formation information of TiSiCN coatings, which shows mixing of TiN and TiC structure, corresponding to (111), (200) and (220) planes of TiCN. The chemical composition of the film was investigated by XPS core level spectra. The binding energy of the elements present in the films was estimated using XPS measurements and it shows present of elemental information corresponding to Ti2p, N1s, Si 2p and C1. Film hardness and elastic modulus were measured with a nano-indenter, and film hardness reached 40 GPa. Tribological behaviors of the films were evaluated using a ball-on-disk tribometer, and the films demonstrated properties of low-friction and good wear resistance.
