  • It is an inconvenience for silica nano-particles to dry again when using it in that they cohere each other through moisture in the air. Acrylamide groups were introduced to improve such inconvenience and copolymerized with silica nano-particles and then we copolymerized again with polyamic acid in order to increase thermal characteristic. Amide block copolymers were prepared using silica and (3-mercaptopropyl) trimethoxysilane (MPTMS) with a siloxane group, using 2,6-Lutidine as a catalyst. Amide block polymers and copolymers were synthesized via ATRP after brominating pyromellitic dianhydride (PMDA) and polyamic acid of methylene diphenyl diamine (MDA), using ${\alpha}$-bromo isobutyryl bromide. Characteristic peaks of copolymer with amide and imide groups and patterns of amorphous polymers were researched by FT-IR and XRD analyses and the analysis of surface characteristic groups was conducted via XPS. A change in thermal properties was examined through DSC and TGA and solubility for solvents was also researched.

  • The present approach shows the use of nano-silica/nano-alumina in polyurethane (PU) matrix, which lead to significant improvements in the mechanical and thermal properties of the nano-composite. It is observed that with incorporation of 1% of nano-alumina into the PU matrix, there is an improvement in the tensile strength of around 50%, and for nano-silica the improvement is around 41%, at the same concentration. The morphological data shows that above 3% of the nano particles there are agglomerations in the nanocomposite. Again with the absorption of moisture, there is a decrease in the thermal and mechanical properties of the PU resin, but in this research work it is observed that with the incorporation of the nano particles, in the presence of absorbed moisture there is an improvement in mechanical and thermal properties of the composite, over that of the PU matrix.

  • In this study, as a material used to replace silica fumes for high strength concrete, nano-silica compound with organic functional group for dispersion and with inorganic silica group that can cause a pozzolan reaction is synthesized, These nano silica compound is divided into IC, which is nano size $SiO_2$ with irregularly combined hydroxyl group and carboxyl group, and RC, which is nano size $SiO_2$ with regularly combined hydroxyl group and carboxyl group. The effects of these nano silica compound on the hydration of cement are reviewed. As a result, all of synthesized nano-silica compounds have excellent dispersion on the cement flow, we think that dispersion property is the effect of air entraining by synthesized nano-silica compounds. The result of the microstructure observation showed that the particle size of the synthesized nano-silica is smaller than silica fume and spread evenly among the cement particles. In initial The phenomenon of strength decreasing occurred due to delayed hydration reaction by the synthesized nano-silica with carboxyl(-COOH) and hydroxyl(-OH) functional group.

  • In this study, the effect of temperature effect of the rubber matrix filled with nano sized silica particles composites with silica volume fraction of 19-25% was investigated by the Charpy impact test. The Charpy impact test was conducted in the temperature range from $-40^{\circ}C$ to $0^{\circ}C$. The critical energy release rate GIC of the rubber matrix composites filled with nano sized silica particles was considerably affected by temperature and it was shown that the maximum value was appeared at higher temperature between temperature tested and it was shown that the value of GIC increases as temperature tested increases. The major fracture mechanisms were matrix deformation, silica particle debonding and delamination, microcrack between particles and matrix, and/or pull out between particles and matrix which is ascertained by SEM photographs of Charpy impact surfaces fracture.

  • The objective of this study was to analyze influence of heat treatment of nano-silica particles on rheological characteristics of shear thickening fluid. Heat treatment was conducted for nano-silica particles with a diameter of 7 nm at temperatures of 120 ℃ and 180 ℃, followed by dispersion in polyethylene glycol as a solvent to fabricate shear thickening fluids with a concentration of 15 wt%. Subsequently, rheological characteristics were investigated using a rheometer. Findings revealed that shear thickening fluids produced with thermally treated nano-silica particles exhibited a notable increase in maximum viscosity, ranging from 8.96% to 213.17%, accompanied by a decrease in critical shear rate, ranging from 14.89% to 57.25%. Furthermore, it was confirmed that the shear thickening effect was enhanced up to 54.17%. These results are anticipated to facilitate the fabrication of high-performance shear thickening fluids with rheological properties that align with design requirements for application in aerospace structures.

  • The characteristics of abrasive wear of the rubber matrix composites filled with nano sized silica particles were investigated at ambient temperature by pin-on-disc friction test. The range of volume fraction of silica particles tested are between 11% to 25%. The cumulative wear volume and friction coefficient of these materials on particle volume fraction were determined experimentally. The major failure mechanisms were lapping layers, deformation of matrix, ploughing, deboding of particles and microcracking by scanning electric microscopy photograph of the tested surface. The cumulative wear volume showed a tendency to increase nonlinear with increase of sliding distance. As increasing the silica particles of these composites indicated higher friction coefficient.

  • The toner type paper-like display (PLD) has been developed with two polymer particles having opposite polarity which is composed of polymer, colorant and external additives (nano-sized silica). Nano-sized silica with triboelectric charge was used for the charge control agent (CCA) and influenced on the electrostatic properties of the silica-coated polymer particles. The PLD cell using silica-coated particles (200 seconds) had shown a good white appearance and low driving voltage. The result could be explained in terms of the surface morphology and the cohesiveness depending on the silica coating time.

  • A colloidal silica slurry has been manufactured by mixing nano silica powders having different grain size to improve the reliability of Sapphire wafer CMP process. The main reliability problem of CMP process such as the breaking of wafer can be prevented by reducing the size of particles in a slurry. While existing commercial colloidal silica slurries are usually made of single grain size silica powder of about 120nm, in the present study 40nm and 100nm silica powders are mixed to achieve a similar removal rate. The new colloidal silica slurry showed wafer removal rate of $3.04{\mu}m/120min$ while that of a commercial colloidal silica slurry was $3.03{\mu}m/120min$. The roughness was less than $4{\AA}$ and scratch was 0. It is also expected that the reduction of the size of nano silica particles can improve the dispersion stability and prolong the useful life of the slurry.

  • A 10 nm nano-silica was introduced to a conventional 3 ${\mu}M$ micro-silica composite to develop an eco-friendly new electric insulation material for heavy electric equipment. Thermal and mechanical properties, such as glass transition temperature (Tg), dynamic mechanical analysis, tensile and flexural strength, were studied. The mechanical results were estimated by comparing scale and shape parameters in Weibull statistical analysis. The thermal and mechanical properties of conventional epoxy/micro-silica composite were improved by the addition of nano-silica. This was due to the increment of the compaction via the even dispersion of the nano-silica among the micro-silica particles.

  • In order to overcome the urban heat island effect, highly functional paint is attracting attention as a promising means by shielding heat on the structure (building) surface. When a paint was prepared containing nano-sized silica particles, the heat-insulating performance was relatively higher than that of paints with other sizes. In addition, developed paints showed enhanced properties such as chemical resistance and abrasion resistance test because of the presence of nano-sized silica included in functional paint.
