Epoxy resin is widely used as aerospace, automobile, construction and electronics due to their good mechanical and electrical properties and environmental advantages. However, the inherent flammability of epoxy resin has limited its application in some field where good flame retardancy is required. Nano clay can enhance the properties of polymers such as flames retardancy and thermal stability. In this study, we have investigated the nanoclay filled epoxy composite, which has good flame retardancy while maintaining high mechanical properties. The cured epoxy resins were obtained using an electron beam curing process. The nano clays were dispersed in epoxy acrylate solution and mechanically stirred. The prepared mixtures were irradiated using an electron beam accelerator. The composites were characterized by gel content and thermal/mechanical properties. Moreover, the flammability of the composite was evaluated by limited oxygen index (LOI). The flame retardancy of nano clay filled epoxy composite was evidently improved.
Silicon micro-patterns were fabricated on Si (100) wafers using photolithography and DRIE (Deep Reactive Ion Etching) fabrication techniques. The patterned shapes included micro-pillars and micro-channels. After the fabrication of the patterns, the patterned surfaces were chemically modified by coating Z-DOL (perfluoropolyether, PFPE) thin films. The surfaces were then evaluated for their micro-friction behavior in comparison with those of bare Si (100) flat, Z-DOL coated Si (100) flat and uncoated Si patterns. Experimental results showed that the chemically treated (Z-DOL coated) patterned surfaces exhibited the lowest values of coefficient of friction when compared to the rest of the test materials. The results indicate that a combination of both the topographical and chemical modification is very effective in reducing the friction property. Combined surface treatments such as these could be useful for tribological applications in miniaturized devices such as Micro/Nano-Electro-Mechanical-Systems (MEMS/NEMS).
Effects of Ca addition on grain refinement, microstructure and mechanical properties of AZ31 Mg alloy were investigated. Due to Ca addition to Mg alloy (AZ31), the microstructure was refined, the quantity of $Mg_{17}Al_{12}$phase was reduced, and new $Al_2Ca$ phase was formed. The tensile property of AZ31 was increased with the minor addition of Ca, but was decreased rapidly over 0.2 wt.% of Ca content. The $Al_2Ca$ phase was considered to be detrimental to the mechanical property of AZ31 Mg alloy.

Theoretical models for prediction of the mechanical properties of cement mortar are developed based on the morphology and interactions of cement hydration products, capillary pores and microcracks. The models account for intermolecular interactions involving the nano-scale calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H) constituents of hydration products, and consider the effects of capillary pores as well as the microcracks within the hydrated cement paste and at the interfacial transition zone (ITZ). Cement mortar was modeled as a three-phase material composed of hydrated cement paste, fine aggregates and ITZ. The Hashin's bound model was used to predict the elastic modulus of mortar as a three-phase composite. Theoretical evaluation of fracture toughness indicated that the frictional pullout of fine aggregates makes major contribution to the fracture energy of cement mortar. Linear fracture mechanics principles were used to model the tensile strength of mortar. The predictions of theoretical models compared reasonably with empirical values.
Microstructural and mechanical properties of Ni-YSZ fabricated using SPS processing have been investigated at various sintering temperatures. Our study shows samples to be applied as a SOFC anode have the proper porosity of 40% and high hardness when processed at $1100^{\circ}C$. These results are comparable to the values obtained at $100-200^{\circ}C$ higher sintering temperature reported by others. This result is important because when the fabrication processes are performed above $1100^{\circ}C$, the mechanical property starts to decrease drastically. This is caused by the fast grain coarsening at the higher temperature, which initiates a mismatch between thermal expansion coefficients of Ni and YSZ and induces cracks as well.

In this study, some materials are organized and experimented with variables to obtain the optimum mix proportion for the mechanical property of halogen free flame resistance compound with varying addition of nano clay. Tensile strength, density and stiffness are tested in the room temperature. In this study, unlike existing layered structure, nano clay with tabular structure is used and sufficient stiffness, strength, thermal stability and gas block capability can be achieved with small amount of addition. Tensile strength and elongation test show high rupture strength only in specimens with compatibilizing agents while density test shows average measurement in all the specimens except T-9. It was confirmed that the measurement value according to the additives in compatibilizing agent or in nano clay of hardness test represents similarly.
Graphite has hexagonal closed packing structure with two bonding characteristics; (1) van der waals bonding between c axis, and (2) covalent bonding in the a and b axis. The weak van der waals bonds cause self-lubricant property, and the strong covalent bonds cause excellent electric and thermal conductivity. Furthermore, graphite is chemically very inert because of the material composed of only carbon elements. Thus, graphite is very useful for mechanical sealing materials. However, Graphite have porous microstructure because starting materials of graphite produce many volatile during the manufacturing processes. This causes low density of graphite, which is unsuitable for the mechanical sealing materials. Thus, further impregnation process is generally needed to enhance the graphite density. In this work, high density graphite is prepared with the principle of densification when coke and pitch binder, prepared from thermal treatment of coal tar pitch, become dehydrogenation during graphitization or carbonization.

Scanning Thermal Microscope (STU) has been known for its superior resolution for local temperature and thermal property measurement. However, commercially available STU probe which is the key component of SThM does not provide resolution enough to explore nanoscale thermal phenomena. Here, we developed a SThM probe fabrication process that can achieve spatial resolution around 50 m. The batch-fabricated probe has a thermocouple junction located at the end of the tip. The size of the thermocouple junction is around 200 m and the distance of the junction from the very end of the tip is 150 m. The probe is currently being used for nanoscale thermal probing of nano-material and nano device.

This study investigates the thermal and mechanical properties of insulation elements through mixing epoxy based micro- and nano particles. Regarding thermal properties, DSC and DMA were used to calculate crosslinking densities for various types of insulation elements. In a mechanical property of bending strength, shape and scale parameters were obtained using the Weibull plot. This study obtained the most excellent results of scale parameters, such as Vol 3.2%, in the bending strength of EMNCs.

This paper presents a linear positioning system and its control algorithm design with nano accuracy/resolution. The basic linear stage structure is driven by an ultrasonic motor and its displacement feedback is detected by a LDGI (Laser Diffraction Grating Interferometer), which can achieve nanometer resolution. Due to the friction driving property of the ultrasonic motor, the driving situation differs in various ranges along the travel. Experiments have been carried out in order to observe and realize the phenomena of the three main driving modes: AC mode (for mm motion), Gate mode (for ${\mu}m$ motion), and DC mode (for nm motion). A proposed FCMAC (Fuzzy Cerebella Model Articulation Controller) control algorithm is implemented for manipulating and predicting the velocity variation during the motion of each mode respectively. The PCbased integral positioning system is built up with a NI DAQ Device by a BCB (Borland $C^{++}$ Builder) program to accomplish the purpose of an intelligent nanopositioning control.
