Demand for optical glass device used for lighting could increase rapidly because of LED lighting market growth. The optical glass devices that have been formed by hot press molding process the desired optical performance without being subjected to mechanical processing such as curve generation or grinding. EL-Max material has been used for many engineering applications because of their high wear resistance, high compressive strength, corrosion resistant and very good dimensional stability. EL-Max is very useful for a glass lens mold especially at high temperature and pressure. The performance and reliability of optical components are strongly influenced by the surface damage of EL-Max during grinding process. Therefore, the severe process condition optimization shall be necessary for the highly qualified EL-Max glass lens mold. To get the required qualified surface of EL-Max, the selection of type of the diamond wheel is also important. In this paper, we report best grinding conditions of ultra-precision grinding machining. The grinding machining results of the form accuracy and surface roughness have been analyzed by using Form Talysurf and NanoScan.
Ni (100 nm thick) was deposited onto synthesized diamonds to fabricate etched diamonds. Next, those diamonds were annealed at varying temperatures ($400{\sim}1200^{\circ}C$) for 30 minutes and then immersed in 30 wt% $HNO_3$ to remove the Ni layers. The etched properties of the diamonds were examined with FE-SEM, micro-Raman, and VSM. The FE-SEM results showed that the Ni agglomerated at a low annealing temperature (${\sim}400^{\circ}C$), and self-aligned hemisphere dots formed at an annealing temperature of $800^{\circ}C$. Those dots became smaller with a bimodal distribution as the annealing temperature increased. After stripping the Ni layers, etch pits and trigons formed with annealing temperatures above $400^{\circ}C$ on the surface of the diamonds. However, surface graphite layers existed above $1000^{\circ}C$. The B-H loop results showed that the coercivity of the samples increased to 320 Oe (from 37 Oe) when the annealing temperature increased to $600^{\circ}C$ and then, decreased to 150 Oe with elevated annealing temperatures. This result indicates that the coercivity was affected by magnetic domain pinning at temperatures below $600^{\circ}C$ and single domain behavior at elevated temperatures above $800^{\circ}C$ consistent with the microstructure results. Thus, the results of this study show that the surface of diamonds can be etched.

Diamond-like carbon(DLC) films were deposited by linear ion source(LIS)-physical vapor deposition method changing the anode voltages from 800 V to 1800 V, and characteristics of the films were investigated using residual stress tester, nano-indentation, micro raman spectroscopy, scratch tester and Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscope(FE-SEM). The results showed that the residual stress and hardness increased with increasing the ion energy up to anode voltage of 1400 V. It was also found that the content of $SP^3$ carbon increased with increasing the anode voltage $SP^3/SP^2$ ratio through investigation of $SP^3/SP^2$ ratio by the micro-raman analysis. From these results, it can be concluded that the physical properties of DLC films such as residual stress and hardness are increased with increasing the anode voltage. These results can be explained that 3-dimensional cross-links between carbon atoms and Dangling bond are enhanced and the internal compressive stress also increased with increasing the anode voltage. The optimal anode voltage is considered to be around 1400 V in these experimental conditions.

Tribological behaviors of the hard film on soft substrate system were explored using the hard thin film of diamond-like carbon (DLC) coated the soft polymer of polydimethysiloxane (PDMS). A DLC film with the Young's modulus of 100 GPa was coated on PDMS substrate with Young's modulus of 10 MPa using plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) technique. The deposition time was varied from 10 sec to 10 min, resulting in nanoscale roughness of wrinkle patterns with the thickness of 20 nm to 510 nm, respectively, at a bias voltage of $400\;V_b$, working pressure 10 mTorr. Nanoscale wrinkle patterns with 20-100 nm in width and 10-30 nm height were formed on DLC coating due to the residual stress in compression and difference in Young's modulus. Nanoscale roughness effect on tribological behaviors was observed by performing a tribo-experiment using the ball-on-disk type tribometer with a steel ball of 6 mm in diameter at the sliding speed of 220 rpm, normal load of 1N and 25% humidity at ambient temperature of $25^{\circ}C$. Friction force were measured with respect to thickness change of coated DLC thin film on PDMS. It was found that with increases the thickness of DLC coating on PDMS, the coefficient of friction decreased by comparison to that of the uncoated PDMS. The wear tracks before and after tribo-test were analyzed using SEM and AFM.

Two hydrogenation surface modifications, namely hydrogen atmosphere heat treatment and hydrogen plasma treatment, were found to lead to improved dispersion of nanodiamond (ND) seed particles and enhanced nucleation density for deposition of smooth ultrananocrystalline diamond (UNCD) film. After hydrogenation, the C-O and O-H surface functionalities on the surface of nanodiamond particles were converted to the C-H surface functionalities, and the Zeta potential was increased. As the degree of dispersion was improved, the size of nanodiamond aggregates decreased significantly and nucleation density increased dramatically. After hydrogen heat treatment at 600℃, average size of ND particles was greatly reduced from 3.5 ㎛ to 34.5 nm and a very high nucleation of ~3.9 × 1011 nuclei/㎠ was obtained for the seeded Si surface.
In this study, the electrical conductivity, transmittance and gas barrier properties of diamond-like carbon (DLC) thin films were studied. DLC is an insulator, and has transmittance and oxygen gas barrier properties varying depending on the thickness of the thin film. Recently, many researchers have been trying to apply DLC properties to specific industrial conditions. The DLC thin films were deposited by PECVD (Plasma Enhanced Chemical Vapor Deposition) process. The doping gas was used for the DLC film to have electrical conductivity, and the optimum conditions of transmittance and gas barrier properties were established by adjusting the gas ratio and DLC thickness. In order to improve the electrical conductivity of the DLC thin film, $N_2$ doping gas was used for $CH_4$ or $C_2H_2$ gas. Then, a heat treatment process was performed for 30 minutes in a box furnace set at $200^{\circ}C$. The lowest sheet resistance value of the DLC film was found to be $18.11k{\Omega}/cm^2$. On the other hand, the maximum transmittance of the DLC film deposited on the PET substrate was 98.8%, and the minimum oxygen transmission rate (OTR) of the DLC film of $C_2H_2$ gas was 0.83.

Hydrogen free diamond like carbon (DLC) films were prepared on steel substrates by using a single ion beam in a configuration that allowed sputtering of a graphite target and at the same time allowed to impact the substrate at a grazing angle. The DLC films so prepared have improved properties with increased disorder and with modest hardness that is slightly higher than previously reported values. We have studied the effects of $N_2^+$ ions implantation on such films. It is found that the implantations of nitrogen ions into DLC films lead to chemical modifications that allowed N atoms to be incorporated into the carbon network to produce a nitrogenated DLC. Nano-indentation experiments indicated that the nitrogenated films have consistently higher hardnesses ranging from 30 to 45GPa, which represents a considerable increase in surface hardness, compared with non-nitrogenated precursor films. The investigations by XPS and Raman spectroscopy suggests that the $N_2^+$ implanted DLCs had undergone both chemical and structural modifications through the incorporation of N atoms and the increased ratio of $sp^3/sp^2$ type bonding. The observed high hardness was therefore attributable to these structural and chemical modifications. This result has implication for the preparation of super hard wear resistant films required for tribological functions in devices.

In a micro-scale contact, surface forces such as capillary force and van der Waals Interaction significantly Influence the contact between asperities of rough surfaces. Little is, however, known about the variation of these surface forces as a function of chemical property of the surface (hydrophilicity), relative humidity and deformation of asperities In the real area of contact. A better understanding of these surface forces is of great necessity in order to find an optimal solution for reducing friction and adhesion of micro surfaces. We proposed an effective method to analyze capillary and van der Waals forces In nano-scale contact. In this method, Winklerian foundation model was employed to analyze the contact of rough surfaces that were obtained from atomic force microscopy (AFM) height Images. Self-mated contact of diamond-like-carbon (DLC) coatings was analyzed, as an example, by the proposed model. It was shown that the capillary force was significantly influenced by relative humidify and wet angle of the DLC surface. The deformation of asperities to a critical magnitude by external loading led to a considerable increase of both capillary and van der Waals forces.

Load/Unload technology has more benefits than the conventional CSS technology. However, it remains unsolved technical problem on the unloading process. While the slider climbs up the ramp at the outer edge of the disk, the possibility of the slider-disk contact by lift-off force and rebound of the slider increases. This paper focuses on no slider-disk contact. To prevent the slider-disk contact, we apply the disk bump on disk outer edge proceeding unload. Firstly, in the simulation, the bump dimension is determined by changing bump design parameters. Secondly, dynamic stability of slider have to be checked on disk bump before unload analysis, and unload analysis is performed by applying stable bump shapes to unload simulation. Thirdly, we select optimal bump shape to improve unload performance by unload analysis. Finally, in the experiment, the disk bump is mechanically manufactured by pressing disk surface using diamond tip. That is variously processed by changing pressing pressure. After confirming bump shape by nano-scanner, proper bump shape is applied to real experimental unload process. Through this investigation, we propose the optimal bump design to prevent the slider-disk contact, and then we can realize improved unloading performance.

Multiple additives can help improve the performance of generally used lubricants. These additives include MoS2, cadmium, chloride, indium, sulfide, and phosphide, which are harmful to both humans and the environment. Thus, researchers in this industry have been trying to reduce the use of these additives by finding alternatives. Nanodiamonds are one of these candidates. Nanodiamond particles are very hard, chemically stable, and highly heat-conductive. This research involved uniformly dispersing nanodiamond particles in marine engine oils via a matrix synthesis method at various concentrations (0, 0.1, 0.3, 0.5, and 1.0 wt). Friction and wear tests involved constant loads on ball-on-disk specimens, where the ball was AISI 51200 steel, the disk was AISI 1020 steel, and the sliding speed was 0.217 m/s. The lowest wear occurred at a suitable concentration of nanodiamonds (0.3 wt). However, excessive amounts of nanodiamonds caused them to act as abrasive debris because of their hardness, which increased the wear amount. The friction coefficient decreased as the nanodiamond concentration increased because their octagonal, almost spherical shape caused them to act as rolling contact elements between two surfaces.
