  • The present approach shows the use of nano-silica/nano-alumina in polyurethane (PU) matrix, which lead to significant improvements in the mechanical and thermal properties of the nano-composite. It is observed that with incorporation of 1% of nano-alumina into the PU matrix, there is an improvement in the tensile strength of around 50%, and for nano-silica the improvement is around 41%, at the same concentration. The morphological data shows that above 3% of the nano particles there are agglomerations in the nanocomposite. Again with the absorption of moisture, there is a decrease in the thermal and mechanical properties of the PU resin, but in this research work it is observed that with the incorporation of the nano particles, in the presence of absorbed moisture there is an improvement in mechanical and thermal properties of the composite, over that of the PU matrix.

  • In this work, the complex permittivity of epoxy resins is measured. Epoxy resins, epoxy with micro size fillers and epoxy with micro+nano alumina composites have been evaluated for dielectric properties according to frequency variation. The dielectric spectroscopy measurement and analyses are carried out in the frequency range of $10^{-2}Hz$ to 1MHz and constant to room temperature. The results of dielectric loss suggest that significant improvement in the electrical performance can be expected by using samples containing nano and micro fillers mixture when compared to materials containing only microfillers. As the result, we verified the specific characteristics of dielectric permittivity and dielectric loss namely, relative permittivity become low with improving dispersibility of nano+micro mixture composites and become rise with agglomerate of nano particles.

  • Epoxy/micro-sized alumina composite was prepared and the effects of alumina content on the electrical and mechanical properties were investigated in order to develop an insulation material for gas insulated switchgear (GIS). Nano-sized alumina (average particle size: 30 μm) was also incorporated into the epoxy/micro-sized alumina composite. An electrical insulation breakdown strength test was carried out in sphere-sphere electrodes and the data were estimated by Weibull statistical analysis. Tensile strength was measured at a crosshead speed of 10 mm/min using a universal testing machine. Alumina content was varied from 0 wt% to 70 wt%.). As micro-sized alumina content increased, insulation breakdown strength increased until 40 wt% alumina content and decreased after that content. The tensile strength of a neat epoxy system was 82.2 MPa and that value for 60 wt% alumina content was 91.8 MPa, which was 111.7% higher than inthe neat epoxy system. The insulation breakdown strength of micro-sized alumina (60 wt%)/nano-sized alumina (1 phr) glycerol diglycidyl ether (GDE) (1 phr) composite was 54.2 MPa, which was 116% higher than the strength of the system without nano-sized alumina.

  • The power capacitors used as vehicle inverters must have a small size, high capacitance, high voltage, fast response and wide operating temperature. Our thin film capacitor was fabricated by alumina layers as a dielectric material and a metal electrode instead of a liquid electrolyte in an aluminum electrolytic capacitor. We analyzed the micro structures and the electrical properties of the thin film capacitors fabricated by nano-channel alumina and metal electrodes. The metal electrode was filled into the alumina nano-channel by electroless nickel plating with polyethylene glycol and a palladium catalyst. The spherical metals were formed inside the alumina nano pores. The breakdown voltage and leakage current increased by the chemical reaction of the alumina layer and $PdCl_2$ solution. The thickness of the electroless plated nickel layer was 300 nm. We observed the nano pores in the interface between the alumina layer and the metal electrode. The alumina capacitors with nickel electrodes had a capacitance density of 100 $nF/cm^2$, dielectric loss of 0.01, breakdown voltage of 0.7MV/cm and leakage current of $10^4{\mu}A$.

  • To investigate the effect of properties of pores in anodic alumina template(AAT) on the formation and characteristics of metal nano wires, Cu and Ni nano wires were manufactured using anodic alumina template formed in various electrolytes. The characteristics of prepared metal nano wires using AAT could be replicated from those of pores in AAT. The diameters of nano wires could be controlled by the widening process of anodic porous film in $H_3PO_4$ solution. The shape ratio of the nano wire was shown to be $170{\pm}30$ for Ni nano wire formed by AAT made in sulfuric acid.

  • PURPOSE. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of nano-structured alumina surface coating on shear bond strength between Y-TZP ceramic and various dual-cured resin cements. MATERIALS AND METHODS. A total of 90 disk-shaped zirconia specimens (HASS CO., Gangneung, Korea) were divided into three groups by surface treatment method: (1) airborne particle abrasion, (2) tribochemicalsilica coating, and (3) nano-structured alumina coating. Each group was categorized into three subgroups of ten specimens and bonded with three different types of dual-cured resin cements. After thermocycling, shear bond strength was measured and failure modes were observed through FE-SEM. Two-way ANOVA and the Tukey's HSD test were performed to determine the effects of surface treatment method and type of cement on bond strength (P<.05). To confirm the correlation of surface treatment and failure mode, the Chi-square test was used. RESULTS. Groups treated with the nano-structured alumina coating showed significantly higher shear bond strength compared to other groups treated with airborne particle abrasion or tribochemical silica coating. Clearfil SA Luting showed a significantly higher shear bond strength compared to RelyX ARC and RelyX Unicem. The cohesive failure mode was observed to be dominant in the groups treated with nano-structured alumina coating, while the adhesive failure mode was prevalent in the groups treated with either airborne particle abrasion or tribochemical silica coating. CONCLUSION. Nano-structured alumina coating is an effective zirconia surface treatment method for enhancing the bond strength between Y-TZP ceramic and various dual-cured resin cements.

  • Recently UV laser is widely used to process micro parts using various materials such as polymers, metals and ceramics because it has a very high intensity at the focused spot area. It is generally known that there are still some difficulties for alumina($Al_2O_3$) ceramics to directly make micro patterns like holes and lines on the surface of working material using 355nm UV laser because the alumina has a very low absorption coefficient at that wavelength. But nowadays new alumna with nano-porous holes is developed and applied to advanced micro functional parts of IT, BT and BT industries. In this paper, we are going to show the mechanism of photo-thermal ablation for nano-porous ceramics. Inside hole there is a lot of multiple reflections along the depth of hole. Experimentally we can find the micro hole drilling and micro grooving on the surface of nano-porous alumina.

  • The coating of conductive polypyrrole (Ppy) on nonconductive ceramic substrates was performed by polymerization of pyrrole (Py) in an aqueous solution. The Ppy film was characterized by scanning electron microscopy and conductivity measurements. Electrophoretic deposition of bimodal alumina suspension prepared with a phosphate ester was performed using Ppy film as a cathode. Fabrication of alumina ceramics with irregular shapes or complicated patterns were also attempted by sintering the deposits together with the Ppy coated substrates in air.

  • New hydrophobic alumina nanoparticles were synthesized from alumina powders which were hydrophilic nano-agglomerates with diameters from ${\mu}m$ to mm by surface modification. The synthesized hydrophobic alumina nanoparticles which were retreated with Oleic acid were analyzed by Fourier transform infrared spectrophotometer and transmission electron microscopy. Then transformer oil containing surface-modified alumina naonparticles were synthesized. The synthesized hydrophobic alumina nanoparticles were well-dispersed in transformer oil. The coefficient of viscosity and dielectric strength of the Nano-transformer oil were investigated with viscometer and high voltage experiment device. In this study, the thermal conductivity of Nano-transformer oil was investigated to reduce the oil temperature of transformer by transient hot-wire method.

  • PURPOSE. The purpose of this in vitro study is to examine the effects of a nano-structured alumina coating on the adhesion between resin cements and zirconia ceramics using a four-point bending test. MATERIALS AND METHODS. 100 pairs of zirconium bar specimens were prepared with dimensions of $25mm{\times}2mm{\times}5mm$ and cementation surfaces of $5mm{\times}2mm$. The samples were divided into 5 groups of 20 pairs each. The groups are as follows: Group I (C) - Control with no surface modification, Group II (APA) - airborne-particle-abrasion with $110{\mu}m$ high-purity aluminum oxide ($Al_2O_3$) particles, Group III (ROC) - airborne-particle-abrasion with $110{\mu}m$ silica modified aluminum oxide ($Al_2O_3+SiO_2$) particles, Group IV (TCS) - tribochemical silica coated with $Al_2O_3$ particles, and Group V (AlC) - nano alumina coating. The surface modifications were assessed on two samples selected from each group by atomic force microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The samples were cemented with two different self-adhesive resin cements. The bending bond strength was evaluated by mechanical testing. RESULTS. According to the ANOVA results, surface treatments, different cement types, and their interactions were statistically significant (P<.05). The highest flexural bond strengths were obtained in nano-structured alumina coated zirconia surfaces (50.4 MPa) and the lowest values were obtained in the control group (12.00 MPa), both of which were cemented using a self-adhesive resin cement. CONCLUSION. The surface modifications tested in the current study affected the surface roughness and flexural bond strength of zirconia. The nano alumina coating method significantly increased the flexural bond strength of zirconia ceramics.
