A composite of rapidly solidified Al-6061 alloy powder with graphite particle reinforcements was prepared by ball milling and subsequent hot extrusion. The microstructure and mechanical properties of these composites were investigated as a function of milling time. With increasing milling time, the gas atomized initially and spherical powders became elongated with a maximum aspect ratio after milling for 30 h. Then, refinement and spheroidization were achieved by further milling to 70 h with a homogeneous and fine dispersion of graphite particles forming between the matrix alloy layers. The best compression and wear properties were obtained in the powder milled for 70 h, associated with the increased fine and homogeneous distribution of graphite particles in the aluminum alloy matrix.
In this study, the influence of heat treatment and Ca contents on the electrochemical behavior was investigated. Mg-Ca alloys, i.e., Mg-0.22wt%Ca, Mg-0.56wt%Ca, Mg-1.31wt%Ca are prepared by ingot metallurgy. As-cast Mg-Ca alloys exhibited better electrochemical properties than pure Mg. Especially, Mg-0.22wt%Ca alloy improves its anode efficiency up to 62% and lowers the OCP up to -1.72VSCE. Microstructure and XRD patterns of Mg-Ca alloys show that additive Ca element is mainly solid-solutioned. While, the others show the microstructure and XRD pattern with large $Mg_2Ca$ at grain boundary. To assess the effect of heat treatment on the as-cast Mg-alloy, the specimens were heat treated at $200^{\circ}C$ for 2 hours under $CO_2$ gas atmosphere. Although corrosion properties of Mg-Ca alloys are somewhat deteriorated by heat treatment at $200^{\circ}C$ Mg-0.22wt%Ca alloy with uniformly distributed nano-sized $Mg_2Ca$ phase in ${\alpha}$-Mg matrix show still better corrosion properties than pure Mg specimen.
Waste SiC powders obtained from silicon wafer sludge have very low density and a narrow particle size distribution of $10-20{\mu}m$. A scarce yield of C and Si is expected when SiC powders are incorporated into the Fe melt without briquetting. Here, the briquetting variables of the SiC powders are studied as a function of the sintering temperature, pressure, and type and contents of the binders to improve the yield. It is experimentally confirmed that Si and C from the sintered briquette can be incorporated effectively into the Fe melt when the waste SiC powders milled for 30 min with 20 wt.% Fe binder are sintered at $1100^{\circ}C$ upon compaction using a pressure of 250 MPa. XRF-WDS analysis shows that an yield of about 90% is obtained when the SiC briquette is kept in the Fe melt at $1650^{\circ}C$ for more than 1 h.

Silane surface treatments have been developed as an alternative for toxic and carcinogenic chromate-based treatments for years. It is consistently observed that ultra-thin films offer excellent corrosion protection as well as paint adhesion to metals. The silane performance is comparable to, or in some cases better than, that of chromate layers. Based on the tetra-ethylorthosilicate(TEOS) and methlyl trieethoxysilane(MTES), inorganic sol was synthesized and formed hybrid networks with $SiO_2$ nano particle and polypropylene glycol(PPG) on Zn alloyed steel surface. According to SST results, addition of 10nm and 50nm $SiO_2$ nanoparticle in synthesized solution improved anti-corrosion property by its shear stress relaxation effect during curing process. Also, SST results were shown that anti-corrosive property was affected by the amounts of organic compounds.
Recently, interest in multifunctional energetic structural materials (MESMs) has grown due to their multifunctional potential, especially in military applications. However, there are few studies about extrinsic factors that govern the reactivity of MESMs. In this paper, a shock compaction process was performed on the nano Ni/Al-mixed powder to investigate the effect of particle size on the shock reaction condition. Additionally, heating the statically compacted specimen was also performed to compare the mechanical properties and microstructure between reacted and unreacted material. The results show that the agglomerated structure of nanopowders interrupts the reaction by reducing the elemental boundary. X-ray diffraction analysis shows that the NiAl and $Ni_3Al$ intermetallics are formed on the reacted specimen. The microhardness results show that the $Ni_3Al$ phase has a higher hardness than NiAl, but the portion of $Ni_3Al$ in the reacted specimen is minor. In conclusion, using Ni/Al composites as a reactive material should focus on energetic use.
There is a worldwide interest in the development and commercialization of polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells [PEMFCs] for vehicular and stationary applications. One of the major objectives is the reduction of loaded electrode materials, which is comprise of the Pt-based noble metals. In this paper, a novel chemical strategy is described for the preparation and characterization of carbon-supported and surface-alloys, which were prepared by using a successive reduction process. After preparing Au colloid nanoparticles, the supporting of Au colloid nanoparticles occurred spontaneously in the carbon black-dispersed aqueous solution. Then nano-scaled active materials were formed on the surface of carbon-supported Au nanoparticles. The structural and electrochemical analyses indicate that the active materials were deposited on the surface of Au nanoparticles selectively and that an alloying process occurred during the successive reducing process. The carbon-supported & surface-alloys showed the higher electrocatalytic activity than those of the particle-alloys and commercial one [Johnson-Matthey] for the reaction of methanol and formic acid oxidation. The increased electrocatalytic activity might be attributed to the effective surface structure of surface-alloys, which have a high utilization of active materials for the surface reaction of electrode.

Nano sized FeAl intermetallic particles were successfully synthesized by plasma arc discharge pro-cess. The synthesized powders shouted core-shell structures with the particle size of 10-20 nm. The core was metallic FeAl and shell was composed of amorphous $AI_{2}O_{3}\;and\;a\;little\;amount\;of\;metallic\;Fe_{3}O_{4}.$ Because of the difference of Fe and Al vapor pressure during synthesis, the Al contents in the nanoparticles depended on the Al contents of master alloy.
In the present study, formation of yard and shell has been investigated in as-melt-spun $Gd_{30}Ti_{25}Al_{25}Co_{20}$ alloy using a variety of transmission electron microscopy techniques. The phase separation during cooling leads to the formation of the microstructure consisting of amorphous droplets with different size scales embedded in the amorphous matrix. Due to the interdiffusion at the interface after the first-step phase separation, ~50 nm-thick yard develops on the surface of the primary droplet particle. Due to the critical wetting phenomenon, ~5 nm thickness shell enveloping the droplet forms. The sell is enriched in Co and Ti, implying that the composition is close to that of the droplet.
The thickness dependence of the microstructure and the giant magnetoresistance behavior of co-evaporated Co-Ag granular alloy films were investigated. The maximum magnetoresistance ratio of 24% was observed in the the as-deposited state of the 40 at. % Co alloy having 200 nm thickness. The surface scattering contributed about 20% to the total resistivity in the 20 nm thick films. The MR ratio dropped sharply when the film thickness was below 50 nm. The reduction in the Co particle size and the increase in solid solubility of Ag in fcc Co when the film thickness decreased were observed using a high resolution TEM. The aspect ratio of the Co particles was also affected by the film thickness. Those microstructural changes as well as the surface induced spin flipping play a significant role in the $\Delta$p change.

There is growing interest in power inductors in which metal soft magnetic powder and epoxy resin are combined. In this field, the process technology for increasing the packing density of magnetic particles in an injection molding process is very important. However, little research has been reported in this regard. In order to improve the packing density, we investigated and compared the sedimentation heights of pastes for three types of soft magnetic alloy powders as a function of the mixing ratios and the type of resin used. Experimental results showed that the packing density was the highest (71.74%) when the mixing ratio was 80 : 16 : 4 (Sendust : Fe-S : CIP) according to the particle size using an SE-4125 resin. In addition, the packing density was found to be inversely related to the layer separation distance. As a result, it was confirmed that the dispersion of solid particles in the paste was important for curing; however, the duration of the curing process can greatly affect the packing density of the final composite.
