  • The lanthanum oxide nano-rods were grown on the surface of 3 mol% Yttria Partially Stabilized Zirconia ceramic composite which containing Lanthanum-Strontium Manganate, $La_xSr_yMn_zO_3$ for the purpose of endorsing the antistatic property. The diameter and the aspect ratio of the nano-rods were greatly changed according to the growing condition. With the optical microscope observation, the nano-rods shining brightly. It was confirmed that the major components of nano-rods is La, and Sr, Mn, Si are minor components by SEM and TEM analyses.

  • Catalyst-free graphene nano-sheets without substrates have been synthesized using fullerene and a high direct current (dc) pulse in the spark plasma sintering (SPS) process. Graphene nano-sheets were synthesized directly in the gas phase of carbon atoms which are generated from fullerene at a temperature of $600^{\circ}C$. Characterization has been carried out by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM), Raman spectroscopy (Raman), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD).

  • We demonstrate the blue InGaN/GaN multiple quantum wells light-emitting diodes (LEDs) with an embedded air-gap photonic crystal (PC) which was fabricated by the lateral epitaxial overgrowth of GaN layer on the tungsten (W) nano-masks. The periodic air-gap PC was formed by the chemical reaction of hydrogen with GaN on the W nano-mask. The optical output power of LEDs with an air-gap PC was increased by 26% compared to LEDs without an air-gap PC. The enhanced optical output power was attributed to the improvement in internal quantum efficiency and light extraction efficiency by the air-gap PC embedded in GaN layer.

  • The dynamics of nano or micro sized-particles in liquid crystal (LC) medium under an external electric field is of theoretical and technological interest. A fullerene of 10 wt% was doped into the LC medium and its electric field induced motion was controlled by both in-plane and vertical electric fields. In the proposed device, pixel electrode I and pixel electrode II were designed consecutively on the bottom substrate and common electrode on the top of the substrate. When the electric field was applied, the fullerenes start to move in direction of applied electric field. The dark, grey and white states in the proposed device can be obtained by suitable combination of the polarity of applied electric field at pixel electrode I, pixel electrode II and common electrode. The dynamical motions of fullerene particles in LC medium suggest that fullerene can be designed for electronic-paper like displays.

  • Nano porous indium tin oxide (ITO) powder was synthesized employing a new route sol-gel combustion hybrid method using Ketjen Black as a fuel. The nano porous ITO powder was composed of $SnCl_4$-98.0% and $In(NO_3)_3{\cdot}XH_2O$-99.999%, produce with a $NH_4OH$ with sol-gel method as a catalyst [1,2]. Crystal structures were examined by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), and those results show shaper intensity peak at $25.6^{\circ}(2{\Theta})$ of $SnO_2$ by increased sintering temperature. A particle morphology as well as crystal size was investigated by scanning electron microscopy(FE-SEM), and the size of the nano porous powder was found to be in the range of 20~30nm. ITO films could controlled by nano porous powder at various sintering temperature in this paper[3,4]. The sol-gel combustion method was offered simple and effective route for the synthesis of nano porous ITO powder[5].

  • We fabricated thin film polarizer by coating lyotropic chromonic liquid crystals (LCLCs) dissolved in anionic monomer solution. Compared to water-based technique, the new method provided many advantages such as excellent coatability, good adhesion to various substrates, and superb surface hardness.

  • Photonic crystals, periodic structure with a high refractive index contrast modulation, have recently become very interesting platform for the manipulation of light. The existence of a photonic bandgap, a frequency range in which the propagation of light is prevented in all directions, makes photonic crystal very useful in application where the spatial localization of light is required, for example waveguide, beam splitter, and cavity. However, the fabrication of 3 dimensional photonic crystals is still difficult process. A concept that has recently attracted a lot of attention is a planar photonic crystal based on a dielectric membrane, suspended in the air and perforated with two dimensional lattice of hole. The fabrication of Si master with pillar structure using hot embossing process is investigated for two dimensional, low-index-contrast photonic crystal waveguide. From our research we show that the multiple stamp copy process proved to be feasible and useful.

  • Nanoindentation is simply an indentation test in which the length scale of the penetration is measured in nanometres rather than microns or millimetres, the latter being common in conventional hardness tests. Three-dimensional molecular dynamics simulations have been conducted to evaluate the nanoindentation test. Molecular dynamics simulations were carried out on single crystal copper by varying crystal orientations to investigate nano-behavior of material beneath an indenter in nanoindentation. Morse potential function was used as an interatomic force between indenter and thin film. The result of the simulation shows that crystal orientation significantly influenced the slip system, dislocation nucleation and dislocation behavior.

  • This study examined the effects of particle size on the light scattering of a nano-sized color filter pigment used to obtain a range of colors in liquid crystal displays. The contrast ratio is one of the most important characteristics of liquid crystal displays. When a color filter is located between two crossed polarizers, the size of the pigment can give rise to a decrease in the contrast ratio due to Rayleigh scattering by the nanoparticles in the filter. The size effect of the color filter pigment on the contrast ratio was investigated in terms of the depolarization parameter. As an experimental result, the depolarization parameter increased with decreasing pigment size. Therefore, a smaller pigment size can reduce light leakage caused by light scattering in the color filter between two crossed polarizers. The depolarization function was also proposed as a useful function for predicting the decrease in the contrast ratio of the color filter.
