  • This paper predicted nonlinear dynamic responses of a cantilevered carbon nanotube(CNT) resonator incorporating the electrostatic forces and van der Waals interactions between the CNT cantilever and ground plane. The structural model of CNT includes geometric and inertial nonlinearities to investigate various phenomena of nonlinear responses of the CNT due to the electrostatic excitation. In order to solve this problem, we used Galerkin's approximation and the numerical integration techniques. As a result, the CNT nano-resonator shows the softening effect through saddle-node bifurcation near primary resonance frequency with increasing the applied AC and DC voltages. Also we can predict nonlinear secondary resonances such as superharmonic and subharmonic resonances. The superharmonic resonance of the nano-resonator is influenced by applied AC voltage. The period-doubling bifurcation leads to the subharmonic resonance which occurs when the nano-resonator is actuated by electrostatic forces as parametric excitation.

  • As alternative materials for bipolar plate of PEM Fuel Cells, carbon composites were fabricated by compression molding. In this study, four types of nano particles, such as Carbon nanotubes, Carbon black, GX-15 and P-15 were mixed with epoxy resin to provide electric conductivity and structural properties. By increasing pressure during molding and volume ratio of nano particles, the physical contact among particles was improved resulting in increased electric conductivity. Surface resistance test showed, P-15 particles have the highest electric conductivity.

  • We investigated a linear carbon nanotube motor serving as the key building block for nano-scale motion control by using molecular dynamics simulations. This linear nano-motor, is based on the electrostatically telescoping multi-walled carbon-nanotube with ultralow intershell sliding friction, is controlled by the gate potential with the capacitance feedback sensing. The resonant harmonic peaks are induced by the interference between the driving frequencies and its self-frequency. The temperature is very important factor to operate this nanomotor.

  • This paper predicted the dynamic behaviors of a cantilevered carbon nanotube(CNT) incorporating the electrostatic force, van der Waals interactions between the CNT and ground plane. The structural model of the CNT includes geometric and inertial nonlinearities for predicting various phenomena of nonlinear responses of the CNT due to the electrostatic force. In order to solve the problem, we used Galerkin's approximation and the numerical integration techniques and as a result, we predicted characteristics of nonlinear response of nano resonator. The cantilevered CNT shows complex dynamic responses and instabilities due to the applied ac and ac voltages, and driving frequencies. The results investigated in this paper are helpful to the modeling of nanotube based electromechanical devices such as nano-resonators and nano-sensors.

  • Solubility of single wall carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) has been determined in various dispersing media by using the solvent parameters such as Kamlet-Taft parameter and 3-dimensional parameters. Nitric acid-treated SWNTs exhibit significantly improved solubility in hydrogen bondable solvents as well as in solvent mixtures. The forming bucky gel with ionic liquid allows for the new group of dissolving solvent. The dissolution behavior of SWNTs provides a route for SWNT dispersion/exfoliation in preparing electrically conductive films such as transparent electrode.

  • A large number of additives have been used with the efforts of improving the performance of lubricants used along with the development of internal combustion engine. In this study, nano-sized graphite was used as liquid-lubricant additive. In order to disperse graphite into oil, we esterified the nano-carbon manufactured by our company with various types of alcohol. After measuring the anti-wear in accordance with the types of alcohol and added concentration, it has been found that its anti-wear/friction decrease has been improved in case of adding 0.1% of the sample composed with C12/14 mixed alcohol & hexadecanol.

  • Ongoing efforts for improved fracture toughness of engineered cementitious materials address the inherent brittleness of the binding matrix at several different levels of the material's geometric scale through the addition of various types of reinforcing fibers. Crack control is required for crack widths that cover the entire range of the grain size spectrum of the material, and this dictates the requirement of hybrid mixes combining fibers of different size (nano, micro, macro). Use of Carbon Nano-Tubes (CNT) and Carbon Nano-Fibers (CNFs) as additives is meant to extend the crack-control function down to the nanoscale where cracking is believed to initiate. In this paper the implications of enhanced toughness thus attained at the material nanostructure are explored, with reference to the global smeared constitutive properties of the material, through consistent interpretation of the reported experimental evidence regarding the behavior of engineered cementitious products to direct and indirect tension.

  • In this paper, we have studied the complex permittivities and their influence on the design of microwave absorbers of E-glass fabric/epoxy composite laminates containing three different types of carbon-based nano conductive fillers such as carbon black (CB), carbon nano fiber (CNF) and multi-wall nano tube (MWNT). The measurements were performed fur permittivities at the frequency band of 0.5 GHz$\sim$18.0 GHz using a vector network analyzer with a 7 mm coaxial air line. The experimental results show that the complex permittivities of the composites depend strongly on the natures and concentrations of the conductive fillers. The real and imaginary parts of the complex permittivities of the composites were proportional to the filler concentrations. But, depending on the types of fillers and frequency band, the increasing rates of the real and imaginary parts with respect to the filler concentrations were all different. These different rates can have an effect on the thickness in designing the single layer microwave absorbers. The effect of the different rates at 10 GHz was examined by using Cole-Cole plot; the plot is composed of a single layer absorber solution line and measured permittivities from these three types of composites. Single layer absorbers of 3 different thicknesses using carbon nano materials were fabricated and the -10 dB band of absorbing performances were all about 3 GHz.
