In this study three log-transformed linear regression models are compared with the focus of bias correction problem. The models are the traditional simple linear regression estimator (SL), the quasi maximum likelihood estimator (QMLE) and the minimum variance unbiased estimator (MVUE). Using such models, suspended solid loads can be estimated using the discharge - suspended solid data set that has been measured by NIER Nakdong River Water Environment Laboratory. As a result, SL shows negative bias for most values of the measured discharge range. QMLE is nearly unbiased for moderate values of the measured discharge range, but shows increasingly positive bias for either large or small value of the measured discharge range. MVUE is unbiased. It is also analyzed how the estimated regression coefficient and exponent are distributed along Nakdong river main stream.

The Ministry of Environment has measured streamflow at eight-day intervals for the estimation of standard flow of the Total Maximum Daily Loads (TMDL) system. This study identified the availability of the partially measured the eight-day interval data for estimating standard flow and found the optimal extension techniques of standard flow. The study area was selected for the Nakbon-A watershed in the Nakdong River, and four streamflow record extension techniques of standard flow were considered: extension, percentile, drainagearea, and regional regression methods. The flow duration curve (FDC) using the eight-day interval streamflow data indicated very high Nash and Sutcliffe Efficiency (NSE) values above 90 % from FDC-II to FDC-VII compared to FDC-VIII, the standard FDC. This result demonstrates that FDC using daily data of three-six cumulative years could represent standard FDC fairly well. For the streamflow record extension techniques of standard flow, the percentile method was selected as the optimal alternative, showing the minimal difference from FDC-VIII. These results validate the availability of the eight-day interval streamflow data in the standard flow estimation and the application of extension techniques. It seems that these results could reduce the uncertainty of partially measured streamflow data for water quantity and quality management.
Milyanggang mid-watershed is located in downstream of Nakdong river basin. The pollutants from that watershed have an direct effect on Nakdong river water quality and it's control is important to manage a water quality of Nakdong river. A target year of Milyanggang mid-watershed water environment management plan is 2013. To predict a water quality at downstream of Milyang river, we have investigated and forecasted the pollutant source and it's loading. There are some plan to construction the sewage treatment plants to improve the water quality of Milyang river. Those are considered on predicting water quality. As results, it is shown that the population of Milyanggang mid-watershed is 131,857 and sewerage supply rate is 62.2% and the livestock is 1,775.300 in 2006. It is estimated that the population is 123,921, the sewerage supply rate is 75.5% in 2013. The generated loading of BOD and TP is 40,735 kg/day and 2,872 kg/day in 2006 and discharged loading is 11,818 kg/day and 722 kg/day in 2006 respectively. Discharged loadings were forecasted upward 1.0% of BOD and downward 2.7% of TP by 2013. The results of water quality prediction of Milyanggang 3 site were 1.6 mg/L of BOD and 0.120 mg/L of TP in 2013. It is over the target water quality at that site in 2015 about 6.7% and 20.0% respectively. Consequently, there need another counterplan to reduce the pollutants in that mid-watershed by 2015.

The Nakdong Estuary is complex water system, where sea water and fresh water meet each other. It has undergone the significant change of its environmental conditions since the construction of the Nakdong River Barrier in 1987. Prior to its construction, mixing and circulation processes in the Nakdong Estuary was dominated by tidal current. However, after the dam construction, those processes were greatly altered by the artificial control of the fresh river water discharge. In this paper, the influence of opening and closing the floodgate of Nakdong River on the outflow behavior of estuarine water from the Nakdong Estuary is analyzed in detail.
A delta is a depositional landform that is formed when sediment transported by a river is deposited in a relatively low-energy environment, such as a lake, sea, or a main channel. Among these, a delta formed at the confluence of rivers has a great importance in river management and research because it has a significant impact on the hydraulic and sedimentological characteristics of the river. Recently, the equilibrium state of the confluence area has been disrupted by large-scale dredging and construction of levees in the Nakdong River. However, due to the natural recovery of the river, the confluence area is returning to its pre-dredging natural state through ongoing sedimentation. The time-series data show that the confluence delta has been steadily growing since the dredging, but once it reaches a certain size, it repeats growth and retreat, and the overall size does not change significantly. In this study, we developed a model to explain the sedimentation-erosion processes in the confluence area based on the assumption that the confluence delta reaches a dynamic equilibrium. The model is based on two fundamental principles: sedimentation due to supply from the tributary and erosion due to the main channel. The erosion coefficient that represents the Nakdong River confluence areas, was obtained using data from the tributaries of the Nakdong River. Sensitivity analyses were conducted using the developed model to understand how the confluence delta responds to changes in the sediment and water discharges of the tributary and the main channel, respectively. We then used annual average discharge of the Nakdong River's tributaries to predict the dynamic equilibrium positions of the confluence deltas. Finally, we conducted a simulation experiment on the development of the Gamcheon-Nakdong River delta using recorded daily discharge. The results showed that even though it is a simple model, it accurately predicted the dynamic equilibrium positions of the confluence deltas in the Nakdong River, including the areas where the delta had not formed, and those where the delta had already formed and predicted the trend of the response of the Gamcheon-Nakdong River delta. However, the actual retreat in the Gamcheon-Nakdong River delta was not captured fully due to errors and limitations in the simplification process. The insights through this study provide basic information on the sediment supply of the Nakdong River through the confluence areas, which can be implemented as a basic model for river maintenance and management.
Although the construction of the Nakdong River Estuary Barrage (NEB) improved the water supply in the region, it cut off the longitudinal connectivity of the estuary aquatic ecosystem. Thus, the social demands for opening the NEB have been continuously raised, and the efforts to restore the aquatic ecosystem of the Nakdong River estuary began in 2017. Many fish species have inhabited the Nakdong River estuary. Since their habitat and migration characteristics vary widely, the sluice gate operation considering them is essential for the restoration of the aquatic ecosystem. Therefore, in this study, we monitored the fish species living and migrating in the Nakdong River estuary and analyzed the possibility of smooth movement of for each fish species by calculating the average flow velocity according to the type and the height of the gate opening. Moreover, we selected the target fish species for each month and suggested the sluice gate operation according to the depth of the main habitat to present the measures that are ideal for optimal restoration of the aquatic ecosystem in the Nakdong River estuary area.

In this study, the new methodology such as support vector machines neural networks model (SVM-NNM) using the statistical learning theory is introduced to forecast flood stage in Nakdong river, Republic of Korea. The SVM-NNM in hydrologic time series forecasting is relatively new, and it is more problematic in comparison with classification. And, the multilayer perceptron neural networks model (MLP-NNM) is introduced as the reference neural networks model to compare the performance of SVM-NNM. And, for the performances of the neural networks models, they are composed of training, cross validation, and testing data, respectively. From this research, we evaluate the impact of the SVM-NNM and the MLP-NNM for the forecasting of the hydrologic time series in Nakdong river. Furthermore, we can suggest the new methodology to forecast the flood stage and construct the optimal forecasting system in Nakdong river, Republic of Korea.
We present basic data for developing new research topics and closely examine the existing data on the development and organization of the Nakdong River Estuary Delta by analyzing various studies of the area, including ocean engineering, coastal engineering, ocean environmental engineering, geomorphological, and geological studies. We first defined the general concepts related to the estuary and delta and reviewed the historical development of the Nakdong River Estuary Delta over the past 100 years. We then examined the origin and core elements of the estuary deposits that constitute the delta. In addition, we scrutinized the main factors affecting the development of the delta and analyzed existing research on delta development mechanisms by core researchers. The construction of an estuary barrage is one of the main factors effecting estuarine circulation and has altered the physical oceanic environment, area of deposition, atmospheric environment, and vegetation community of the delta. These factors affect the estuary circulation in turn, altering the delta. Along the Nakdong River, an unsteady-state sandy barrier appears at approximately three times the distance of the wavelength of incident offshore waves, and this terrain forms approximately 10-15 years after reclamation in the interdistributary upper stream and transforms the shoreline. It is necessary to develop a technique to predict terrain change that reproduces the erosion and accumulation of estuarine deposits. To determine the parameters and variables necessary to reproduce this system, continuous on-site monitoring is necessary. The existing research did not fully examine the terrain changes in Nakdong River Estuary or the periodic developmental characteristics. To understand the future process of estuary delta development, it is necessary to establish an integrated management system.

The purpose of this study is to use long-term water quality monitoring data from tributaries of the Nakdong River system to identify problematic substances in tributaries by examining the rate of exceedance and increase in water quality targets. In the Nakdong River system, monitoring is conducted once a month for 38 tributaries that require intensive management, and this data was used to analyze trends in exceeding and increasing target water quality at each point. The analysis items are eight items that can be evaluated based on river water quality standards: DO, BOD, COD, TOC, SS, total phosphorus, fecal coliform, and total coliform. As a result of the analysis, the target water quality exceedance rate was more than 50%, and the items with an increasing trend were TOC, fecal coliform and total E. coli counts, and the items with an exceedance rate of less than 50% but an increasing trend were SS. TOC is believed to be caused by an increase in non-degradable substances, and the continued increase in Total Coliform will require management of Total ColiformTotal Coliform in effluent water from sewage treatment facilities in the future.
A monthly Ensemble Streamflow Prediction (ESP) system was developed by applying a daily rainfall-runoff model known as the Streamflow Synthesis and Reservoir Regulation (SSARR) model to the Han, Nakdong, and Seomjin River basins in Korea. This study first assesses the accuracy of the averaged monthly runoffs simulated by SSARR for the 3 basins and proposes some improvements. The study found that the SSARR modeling of the Han and Nakdong River basins tended to significantly underestimate the actual runoff levels and the modeling of the Seomjin River basinshowed a large error variance. However, by implementing optimal linear correction (OLC), the accuracy of the SSARR model was considerably improved in predicting averaged monthly runoffs of the Han and Nakdong River basins. This improvement was not seen in the modeling of the Seomjin River basin. In addition, the ESP system was applied to forecast probabilistic runoff forecasts one month in advance for the 3 river basins from 1998 to 2003. Considerably improvement was also achieved with OLC in probabilistic forecasting accuracy for the Han and Nakdong River basins, but not in that of the Seomjin River basin.
