  • The geopolymer technique may be a future-oriented technology for saving energies and resources. This technique requires 3 fundamental elements so-called filler, hardener and geopolymer liquor being generally an alkaline silicate solution. Quartz powder, water quenched granulated blast furnace slag and sodium silicate solution prepared from $Na_2O\cdot2SiO_2$were chosen for these three elements. After mixing these starting materials in appropriate proportions, monoliths were prepared by casting at room temperature. Strength tests showed the following results for 28d age speciment: 7.9-12.7 MPa in flexural strength and 20.2-32.8 MPa in compressive strength, depending on geopolymer liquor/solid ratio, P/S and fineness of the quartz powders used.

  • The dependence of the chemical durability of simulated waste glasses containing the simplified waste similar to the SRP waste on compositions of host glasses, amounts of waste loading, and kinds of leachants has been investigated as a basic study on the waste immobilization through vitrification. The maximum limit of the amount of waste loading for glassforming with the host sodium borosilicate glasses selected in this study was 50wt%. The chemical durability of waste glasses whose host glass belonged to the immiscible composition region was much higher than that of waste glasses whose host glass belonged to the miscible composition region. The former waste glass showed lower chemical durability in deionized and silicate waters than in brine, while the latter glass showed the lowest chemical durability in deionized and silicate waters than in brine, while the latter glass showed the lowest chemical durability in silicate water. It was also observed that the total leaching rates in brine were noticeably small in comparison with those in other solutions. The composition of the host borosilicate glass which was suitable for the treatment of the waste through vitrification was found to be 25 Na2O-5B2O3-70SiO2(wt.%).

  • The surface modification of iron oxide particle produced from steel-pickled acid by sodium-contained materials was studied. The molar ratio of $SiO_2$ to $Na_2O$ of sodium silicate was 1, 2, 3.5, respectively. The dispersion stability of iron oxide suspension as functions of amount of silica and pH was evaluated by surface charge and sedimentation velocity of iron oxide particle. Then the amount of sodium silicate was determined to provide a dispersion stability of iron oxide particle above pH 7. Finally, the surface modification of iron oxide particle with sodium silicate as silica-contained materials was done by wet ball milling. In the results of study, the dispersion stability of silica modified iron oxide particle was largely depended on amount of silica and pH together. The untreated iron oxide was unstable at pH 8, i.e. isoelectric point, but, the surface modified iron oxide particle with 0.8wt% silica was stable above pH 5. The dispersion stability was enhanced with 0.2wt% of anionic polyelectrolyte.

  • Benzotriazole which is used as a corrosion inhibitor for the zinc coated steel was intercalated into Na-MMT. X-ray diffraction experiments on intercalant/silicate composite samples demonstrated that the intercalation of intercalant leads to an increase in the spacing between silicate layers. Water soluble poly(ethylene-co-acrylic acid) (PEA) nanocomposites, to use as a coating agent, were prepared with these modified MMT. We found that mono-layered silicates were dispersed in PEA matrix and those resultants were exfoliated nanocomposites. From the result of salt spray test, we found that this coating agent prepared with water soluble poly(ethylene-co-acrylic acid) (PEA) nanocomposite provided good corrosion protection. These results were caused by decreasing the rate of oxygen permeation from silicate layers dispersed homogeneously in PEA matrix and the effect of corrosion inhibitor from benzotriazole.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effects of dietary silicate minerals on ammonia emission from the excreta and performance in laying hens. A total of one thousand and twenty 49 week-old Lohmann brown layers were divided into three treatment groups consisting two replicates of 170 birds each. The experimental diets were containing three kinds of silicate minerals (Sand, Na-bentonite and SY feldspar) added at the level of 2% by top-dressing. Ammonia emission from the excreta was significantly decreased (p<0.05) by the supplementation of Na-bentonite or SY feldspar. N concentration of the excreta was significantly higher (p<0.05) for the hens fed Na-bentonite or SY feldspar compared to those fed sand. However, no significant differences were observed in feed intake and laying performance with over 80% laying rate observed for all the treatments. Egg shell strength was diminished when SY feldspar was added to the diet. As a whole, the results obtained from the experiment indicated that supplementation of Na-bentonite or SY feldspar added at 2% to the laying hen diet should not affect laying performance but help to reduce ammonia from the excreta at the same time.

  • The effect of different silicon (Si) sources and methods of application on the growth of two chrysanthemum cultivars grown in a soilless substrate was investigated. Rooted terminal cuttings of Dendranthema grandiflorum 'Lemmon Eye' and 'Pink Eye' were transplanted into pots containing a coir-based substrate. A nutrient solution containing 0 or $50mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ Si from calcium silicate ($CaSiO_3$), potassium silicate ($K_2SiO_3$) or sodium silicate ($Na_2SiO_3$) was supplied once a day through an ebb-and-flood sub irrigation system. A foliar spray of 0 or $50mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ Si was applied twice a week. Cultivar and application method had a significant effect on plant height. Cultivar, application method, and Si source had a significant effect on plant width. Of the three Si sources studied, $K_2SiO_3$ was found to be the best for the increasing number of flowers, followed by $CaSiO_3$ and $Na_2SiO_3$. In both the cultivars, sub irrigational supply of Si developed necrotic lesions in the older leaves at the beginning of the flowering stage as compared to the control and foliar spray of Si. Cultivar, application method, Si source, and their interactions had significant influence on leaf tissue concentrations of calcium (Ca), potassium (K), phosphorus (P), magnesium (Mg), sulfur (S), sodium (Na), boron (B), iron (Fe), and zinc (Zn). The addition of Si to the nutrient solution decreased leaf tissue concentrations of Ca, Mg, S, Na, B, Cu, Fe, and Mn in both cultivars. The greatest Si concentration in leaf tissue was found in 'Lemmon Eye' ($1420{\mu}g{\cdot}g^{-1}$) and 'Pink Eye' ($1683{\mu}g{\cdot}g^{-1}$) when $K_2SiO_3$ was applied through a sub irrigation system and by foliar spray, respectively.

  • The infrared spectra obtained in the region of $4000∼1200 $cm^{-1}$ has been measured for pyridine, tertiary butylamine, and ethylenediamine adsorbed on various cation-exchanged silicates at various degassing temperature. It was possible to distinguish between protonic and aprotonic acid sites of all cation-exchanged silicates which exhibited both Bronsted and Lewis acidity. The sodium form appeared to be the least reactive towards adsorbates. The relative ratio of the band intensities of tertiary butylamine was directly related to the polarizing power of exchanged cations. Ethylenediamine was less easily desorbed from silicate surface than tertiary butylamine due to the additional amino group to react with surface active site, and probably to form ether hydrogen bond with surface oxgen by liberating migrating proton besides the coordination bond with Lewis acid site and the formation of$NH3^+$ species with Bronsted acid site.

  • The study on the atomic structure of iron-bearing silicate glasses has significant geological implications for both diverse igneous processes on Earth surface and ultra-low velocity zones at the core-mantle boundary. Here, we report experimental results on the effect of iron content on the atomic structure in iron-bearing alkali silicate glasses ($Na_2O-Fe_2O_3-SiO_2$ glasses, up to 16.07 wt% $Fe_2O_3$) using $^{29}Si$ and $^{17}O$ solid-state NMR spectroscopy. $^{29}Si$ spin-lattice ($T_1$) relaxation time for the glasses decreases with increasing iron content due to an enhanced interaction between nuclear spin and unpaired electron in iron. $^{29}Si$ MAS NMR spectra for the glasses show a decrease in signal intensity and an increase in peak width with increasing iron content. However, the heterogeneous peak broa-dening in $^{29}Si$ MAS NMR spectra suggests the heterogeneous distribution of $Q^n$ species around iron in iron-bearing silicate glasses. While nonbridging oxygen ($Na-O-Si$) and bridging oxygen (Si-O-Si) peaks are partially resolved in $^{17}O$ MAS NMR spectrum for iron-free silicate glass, it is difficult to distinguish the oxygen clusters in iron-bearing silicate glass. The Lorentzian peak shape for $^{29}Si$ and $^{17}O$ MAS NMR spectra may reflect life-time broadening due to spin-electron interaction. These results demonstrate that solid-state NMR can be an effective probe of the detailed structure in iron-bearing silicate glasses.

  • The effect of Si supplied during plant cultivation on tolerance to high temperature stress in Euphorbia pulcherrima Willd. 'Ichiban' was investigated. Rooted cuttings were transplanted into 10-cm pots and a complete nutrient solution, containing 0 or $50mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ Si as either $K_2SiO_3$, $Na_2SiO_3$, or $CaSiO_3$, was supplied through subirrigation or weekly foliar applications. After two months of cultivation, plants were placed in an environment-controlled chamber and subjected to $35{\pm}1^{\circ}C$ (high temperature) conditions for 18 days. Enhanced specific activities of enzymatic antioxidants (APX) and suppressed specific activities of non-enzymatic antioxidants (ELP) were observed in the high temperature-stressed plants with Si application. The Fv/Fm (maximum quantum yield of photosystem II), photosynthetic rate, and Si contents in the shoot increased in the treatments of $K_2SiO_3$ and $Na_2SiO_3$ supplied through subirrigation. The Si-treated plants had more tolerance of high temperature stress than the control plants. Of the Si sources and application methods tested, $K_2SiO_3$ and $Na_2SiO_3$ supplied through subirrigation were found to be the most effective in enhancing tolerance to high temperature stress.

  • Silicic acid(SA) was extracted with organic solvents from aqueous sodium silicate solutions acidified with dilute sulfuric acid. Tetrahydrofuran(THF), isopropyl alcohol and acetone were used as organic solvents. The extraction degree of Si and the removal efficiency of Na is determined according to kinds of solvent and the mixing ratios of solvent, sodium chloride and $H_2O$. Optimum conditions for the preparation of high purity SA were THF as an organic solvent, volume ratio of organic solvent/SA : 1 (organic solvent 10ml/10ml SA) and the amount of NaCl addition 2.5g/10ml SA. The extraction degree of Si and the removal efficiency of Na at that point were 86.2% and 99.95% respectively and the purity of SA was 99.96%.
