  • Structure and dynamics of $Na^+$ ions are investigated by molecular dynamics simulations of rigid dehydrated zeolite-A at several temperatures using a simple Lennard-Jones potential plus Coulomb potential. A best-fitted set of electrostatic charges is chosen from the results of simulation at 298.15 K and Ewald summation technique is used for the long-ranged character of Coulomb interaction. The calculated x, y, and z coordinates of $Na^+$ ions are in good agreement with the positions determined by X-ray crystallography within statistical errors, their random movings in different types of closed cages are well described by time-correlation functions, and $Na_Ⅰ$ type ions are found to be less diffusive than $Na_Ⅱ$ and $Na_{III}$. At 600.0 K, the unstable $Na_{III}$ type ion pushes down one of nearest $Na_{I}$ ions into the $\beta-cage$ and sits on the stable site Ⅰ, and the captured ion in the $\beta-cage$ wanders over and attacks one of 8 $Na_{I}$ type ions.

  • An author has been known that A-type zeolite supported with silver ions has excellent antibacterial activity. However, it is no research of concern in the antibacterial activity of eluted silver ions. This study tested the elution of silver ions from A-type zeolite silver ions in deionized distilled water and NaNO$_3$ aqueous solution. In NaNO$_3$ aqueous solution of 74mM to 588mM, it was found that the concentration of silver ions and electric conductivity increased with the increasing concentration of sodium ions, and equilibrated at 15 min, and the ion exchange equilibrium coefficient, k, is 1.3${\times}$10$\^$-3/. However, deionized distilled water is not equilibrated to pass 6 months. A-type zeolite sodium ions showed no antibacterial activity. It was found that antibacterial activity was exhibited even at the concentration of 10 nM of eluted silver ions, and E-coli died with the incorporation of 2.43${\times}$10$\^$8/ Ag ion/cell. antibacterial activity of A-type zeolite silver ions were mainly attributed to hydroxyl radical.

  • A and 2SM-5 type zeoli tic crystal films were synthesized on porous supports from the reaction mixture of 1.9 ${SiO}_2$1.5 $Na_20-Al_2O_3-40$ $H_20$ and $Si0_2$-0.l3 $Na_2O$-52 $H_20$-O.l2 TPAOH composition, respectively. The zeolite films were characterized by XRD and SEM. The 2SM -5 crystals grown on the porous matrix were very closely bound together. It was so difficult to obtain the perfectly intergrown crystals in the case of A-type zeolite and this crystal was transformed into P-type zeolite membrane with a prolonged reaction time. The densely intergrown A type zeolite crystal membrane could be also synthesized by the hydrothermal treatment at 100$^{\cirt}C$ after pressing the reaction mixture without addition of water. The pervaporation performance of the synthesized porous inorganic membranes was investigated for alcohol and water mixtures. A-type zeolite membrane crystallized as a thin film showed the selective \'Jermeability of water from the mixtures through the molecular sieving activity of micropores.

  • A zeolite material with a Si/Al molar ratio of 1.2 was synthesized by changing the NaOH/CFA ratio of coal fly ash (CFA) via a fusion/hydrothermal reaction in the HD thermal power plant. The change in the crystal structure of the zeolite was confirmed using XRD and SEM, and the ammonia adsorption capacities of the synthesized zeolitic materials and a commercial zeolite (Na-A zeolite) were analyzed via an ammonia temperature-programmed desorption (NH3-TPD) process. The SEM and XRD results revealed out the zeolitic materials from the coal fly ash maintained a hexagonal Linde-type crystal structure similar to that of Na-A zeolite, but the crystallinity of the synthesized zeolitic material was reduced due to impurities. The NH3 adsorption capacity, determined from the NH3-TPD analysis of was 1.122 mmol/g of the synthesized zeolitic material, which was lower than the NH3 adsorption capacity of the Na-A zeolite.

  • Through alkaline hydrothermal activation processes, Na-A type zeolite was synthesized as a single phase with funnel-glass waste from a television tube factory. The autoclaving was performed in a closed teflon vessel in the range of 80~95$^{\circ}$C. The silica-rich solution as a starting material was hydrothermally synthesized with quartz in IN NaOH by heating 350uC under the pressure of 1,500 atm. $NaAlO_2$ was made from NaOH and Al(OHh by heating 95$^{\circ}$C for 2-3 hours and the molar ratios of it were $Na_2O/Al_2O_3$ = 1.4 and $H_2O/Na_2O$=8. The equi-dimensional A type zeolite (1-2 11) was formed by the simple mixing of the silica-rich solution, glass waste and $NaAlO_23$ for 1-3 hours-heating at $80^{\circ}C$. The characterization of the reaction product shows Na-A as a single phase. The synthesized zeolite has cuba-dodecahedral form and $Ca^{2+}$ ion exchange capacity of the Na-A was in the range of 215-220 mequiva1entilOO g.

  • The present work was attempted to improve the performance for the removal of water from ethanol/water mixtures through the ion-exchanged zeolite membrane in which $Na^{+}$ ion was substituted to either $K^{+}$ or $Ca^{2+}$ ion. The membranes were ion-exchanged with 0.5 mole/L aqueous solution of either KCl or $CaCl_2$ at $80^{\circ}C$ for 4 hrs. In case of the ion-exchanged membrane in which $Na^{+}$ ion was substituted to $K^{+}$ ion, the total flux was decreased from $900\;g/m^2{\cdot}hr{\sim}2,500\;g/m^2{\cdot}hr$ to $600\;g/m^2{\cdot}hr{\sim}2,000\;g/m^2{\cdot}hr$ and the separation factor was increased from $600{\sim}2,200$ to $850{\sim}2,500$ compared to the NaA type zeolite membrane. And in case of the ion-exchanged membrane in which $Na^{+}$ ion is substituted to $Ca^{2+}$ ion, both the total flux and selectivity of water showed the similar tendency compared to the NaA type zeolite membrane. It is thought that the improved separation would be possible if the pore size of the zeolite membrane is controlled by the ion exchange.

  • A large NaX type zeolite crystal of a uniform particle size of 20${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ are grown with various H2O content by hydrothermal reaction and added seed crystal (2~3 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$) to reactant solution as a function of different adding seed levels from 3 to 15 %. The result that increased purity of NaX zeolite above 95% and homogeneity of crystal size by increasing adding seed levels, also decreased crystallization time. It was explained that adding seed to synthesis solution leaded out increase of surface area of physical contact reaction and directed growth of seed crystal, so more rapid consumption of reaction gel as increase seeding levels.

  • Zeolite was synthesized hydrothermally using the water-treatment sludge, and the effects of various synthesis parameters like reaction temperature, reaction time, and Na2O/SiO2 molar ratio on the crystallization of zeolite were investigated. Crystal structure, physical property, and thermal stability of zeolite crystals were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction, FTIR spectroscopy, BET nitrogen adsorption, and TGA measurements. The removal efficiencies of nitrogen in ammonia, heavy metal ions, and TOC were calculated to evaluate zeolite's adsorption capacity. The primary chemical composition of water-treatment sludge was 28.79% Al2O3 and 27.06% SiO2. The zeolites were synthesized by merely employing the water-treatment sludge as silica and alumina sources without additional chemicals. Zeolite crystals synthesized through the water-treatment sludge were confirmed as an A-type zeolite structure. Zeolite A had the highest crystallinity obtained from a gel with the molar composition 2.1Na2O-Al2O3-1.6SiO2-65H2O after 5 h at a temperature of 90 ℃. The specific surface area of zeolite obtained was 55 ㎡ g-1, which was higher than commercial zeolite A. The removal efficiency of nitrogen in ammonia was 68% after 3 h of reaction time, while the removal efficiencies of Pb2+ and Cd2+ ions were 99.1% and 99.3%, respectively. These results indicate active ion exchange between Pb2+ or Cd2+ ion and Na+ ion in the zeolite framework. The adsorption experiments on the different zeolite addition conditions were performed for 3 h with 300 ppm humic acid. Based on the results, TOC's highest efficiency was 83% when 5 g of zeolite was added.

  • Molecular dynamics (MD) calculations were carried out in order to investigate the effect of MD cell size to predict the melting phenomena of A-type zeolite. We studied two model systems: a pseudocell of $(T_2O_4Na)_n$, (L= 12.264 $^{\AA}$, N= 84) and a true-cell of (SiAlO$_4Na)_n$. (L= 24.528 $^{\AA}$, N= 672), where T is Si or Al. The radial and bond angle distribution functions of T(Si, Al)-O-T(Si, Al) and diffusion coefficients of T and O were reported at various temperatures. For the true-cell model, the melting temperature is below 1500 K and probably around 1000 K, which is about 600-700 K lower than the pseudocell model. Although it took more time (about 30 times longer) to obtain the molecular trajectories of the true-cell model than those of the pseudocell model, the true-cell model gave more realistic structural transition for the A-type zeolite, which agrees with experiment.

  • Smectites were synthesized from Na-P type and Na-A type zeolites by the hydrothermal synthetic method, and their physicochemical properties were studied. The optimal synthetic conditions for producing smectite were $290^{\circ}C$, 72 hr and $75{\sim}100kgf/cm^2$ in autogenous pressure. pHs of initial reaction solutions for the synthesis of smectites from Na-P type and Na-A type zeolite s were pH 6 and pH 10, respectively. The synthetic smectite was confirmed as $12{\AA}$-beidellite by a series of analysis such as X-ray diffraction analysis with random and oriented mounts, ethylene glycol treatment, and Greene-Kelly test, and their several physicochemical properties were studied.
