  • This survey was conducted to Investigate the NaCl contents of meals taken from common restaurants in Seoul area and further to estimate the total dietary intake of salt from the meals. The samples included Seoleung-tang (beef and rice soup)/Galbitang (beef-rib soup), Yeukkye-jang (spicy beef soup), Doenjangchigye-bab (boiled rice with soy paste stew), Bibim-bab (boiled rice with assorted mixtures) and Bibim-naengmyon (buck wheat vermicelli with assorted mixtures). The average content of NaCl for each sample was determined by saltmeter and its daily intake level was estimated. Doenjangchigye-bab was shown the highest concentration of NaCl Doen-jangchigye-bab was separated into drained residue and fluid, and the average NaCl content in the fluid was higher than that in the residue. In comparision of northern and southern region of Seoul divided by Han river, there was no significant difference in the content of NaCl. The average content of NaCl per meal was 10.6g, and from these data, the daily dietary intake of salt for adults was estimated to be 28.5g.

  • This study was conducted to elucidate the changes of photosynthetic ability and cation content in barley cultivar seedlings cultured for 10 and 30 days with different NaCl concentrations containing 1/4 Hoagland solutions. At the highest NaCl concentration, the weight of dry matter and the shoot/root ratio (S/R ratio) were decreased. Thus, shoots were affected more than roots by NaCl treatment. The S/R ratio decreased more in 'Neulssalbori' than in 'Bunong' by the NaCl treatment. The. internal $Na^+$ concentration increased greatly with the highest NaCl concentration, but $K^+$ concentration in plants decreased with the highest NaCl treatment. The $Ca^{2+}$ concentration had a small change with NaCl concentrations. Thus $Na^+$/$K^+$and $Na^+$/$Ca^{2+}$ratios increased with the highest concentration. The chlorophyll content (%/dry weight) of seedlings decreased at higher NaCl levels except for Bunong in 30 day old seedlings. The photosynthetic ability decreased only for Neulssalbori in the 10 days NaCl treatment. The stomatal conductance, and transpiration had decreased in the 10 day old seedlings, but not with 30 day old seedlings.

  • This study was conducted to determine the effect of salinity on the growth and development of Korean ginseng (Panax ginseng C.A.Meyer) and to evaluate the inorganic ion content in Korean ginseng with different general complete fertilizer (GCF) and NaCI concentrations at two growth stages. The stem height of Korean ginseng treated with different GCF and NaCI concentrations decreased at the higher EC (2.0 dS m$^{-1}$ ), but there were no significant difference in the stem diameter, the leaf length, and the leaf width among different treatments. The root growth increased with the supply of GCF. Especially, the root growth was facilitated two times at 3.0 dS $\textrm{m}^{-1}$ as compared to control. But the root growth more sharply decreased with NaCI treatment than GCF. The $\textrm{K}^{+}$ and $\textrm{Mg}^{2+}$ content in leaves and roots increased with GCF at the early growth stage. At the late growth stage, the $\textrm{K}^{+}$ content in leaves decreased but the $\textrm{Ca}^{2+}$ and $\textrm{Mg}^{2+}$ content increased. The $\textrm{Ca}^{2+}$ and $\textrm{Mg}^{2+}$ content in roots increased but the $\textrm{K}^{+}$ content decreased. The $\textrm{Na}^{+}$ content in Korean ginseng increased sharply with NaCl treatment. The $\textrm{NO}_3^{-}$ content in leaves and $\textrm{NH}_4^{+}$ content in leaves and roots increased as GCF concentration increased. The $\textrm{NO}_3^{-}$ content in leaves, stems, and roots at the late growth stage decreased as NaCl concentration increased. The $\textrm{NH}_4^{+}$ content in leaves and roots decreased significantly at the early growth stage, but it decreased significantly in leaves and stems at the late growth stage. The root activity of Korean ginseng increased with GCF, but decreased as the EC increased with NaCl. The water potential of leaves with GCF showed no significant difference compare to control, but the water potential of leaves treated with NaCl decreased as EC increased.

  • Oxynitride glasses in Na-Ca-Si-O-N system were prepared by melting at 135$0^{\circ}C$ for 2 hours in N2 gas. The effects of Si/Na mole ratio and the various Si3N4 contents were investigated. Stable oxynitride glasses can be obtained up to 9wt.% Si3N4 content in case the Si/Na mole ratio was 2.12 and 1.62, but $\beta$-Si3N4 was precipitated at 9wt.% Si3N4 content in case the Si/Na mole rtio was 1.12. Density (p), chemical durability, hardness (Hv), and fracture toughness (KIC) increased with increasing Si3N4 content. In cae the Si/Na mole ratio was 1.12, the increment of properties was remarkable but hardness and fracture toughness did not increase no longer owing to precipitation of $\beta$-Si3N4.

  • Two experiments were conducted to investigate the effects of feather digests on the growth of broiler chicks and taurine content in the broiler meat. In Experiment 1, a total of 40 broiler chickens(Ross) were assigned to 4 dietary treatments: control(T1), regular feather meal(FM) diet(R-FM, T2), NaOH treated FM diet(NaOH-FM,T3), HNO3 treated FM diet(HNO3-FM,T4). In Experiment 2, a total of 70 broiler chickens were assigned to 7 dietary treatments: T1~T4(same as those of Exp. 1), modified HNO3 treated FM diet(M-HNO3-FM,T5), hair meal diet(HM,T6) and 0.22% cystine supplemented diet(CYS,T7). Feather meals and hair meal were supplemented at the 5% in the diet. In Experiment 1 and 2, weight gain of chicks fed R-FM and NaOH-FM tended to be higher than those of the control and HNO3-FM. In Experiment 2, weight gain of chicks fed CYS was highest followed by NaOH-FM, HM, M-HNO3-FM, HNO3-FM, control and R-FM. In Experiment 1, taurine content in breast muscle of chicks fed NaOH-FM was significantly higher(P<0.05) than that of control. In Experiment 2, taurine content in breast muscle of chicks fed NaOH-FM and CYS tended to be higher than that of other groups. Taurine content in leg muscle was significantly different among treatments as NaOH-FM and R-FM being highest followed by M-HNO3-FM, CYS, control, HNO3-FM and BM. Taurine content in the liver(Exp. 1 and 2) and heart(Exp. 2) were not significantly affected by treatments. These results indicated that 5% NaOH-FM in the diet was effective in increasing taurine content in breast and leg muscle of broiler chicks.

  • In order to understand the plant responses to salt stress (0, 50, and 100 mM NaCl), Chinese cabbage seedlings grown up to two leaf stages by hydroponic culture were used. Fresh and dry weight, chlorophyll (Chl), antioxidant materials, polyamine content, antioxidant enzyme activities, and inorganic ion level were evaluated. Fresh and dry weights of Chinese cabbage increased with the increase in salinity while the optimal growth occurred at 50 mM NaCl. The Chl a, total Chl, carotenoid content, and Chl a/b ratio increased by the 6 days after treatment with 100 mM NaCI; however, the Chl b content decreased. Glutathione increased in the root of Chinese cabbage for 6 days. Dehydroascorbate increased remarkably by day 6 caused by the salt stress in both leaf and the root. While ascorbate peroxidase increased, the activity of catalase and glutathione reductase decreased gradually in the first leaf for 6 days. The $Na^+$ content increased by 12.5-fold in the 3 days after treatment with 100 mM NaCI in the shoot, whereas the $Ca^{2+}$, $K^+$, and $Mg^{2+}$ content measured in the same treatment decreased by 43 to 57%. Spermidine content decreased as salinity increased, but spermine content increased. The growth promotion, glutathione and ascorbic acid content in Chinese cabbage were increased by low salt stress, and shortening of the cultivation period for growth increase of Chinese cabbage is expected.

  • To identify salt-tolerance characteristics of corn seedling was treated in solution of 0, 50 and 100 mM NaCl of hydroponic cultivation. In photosynthesis of corn seedling, there was no large difference between 50mM and 0 mM NaCl solution, however, in 100 mM NaCl solution, the tolerance gradually decreased to $76\%,\;49\%,\;and\;31\%$ after one day, four days, and seven days, respectively, in comparison to 0 mM NaCl solution. Osmotic potential of corn in seedling period was significantly decreased with increasing saline level, however, free proline content in the plant on the ground was significantly increased with increasing saline level and with the lapse of time. In terms of correlation among major characteristics, there was a highly significant positive difference between osmotic pressure potential and photosynthesis, However, highly negative correlation was found between osmotic pressure potential and free proline content. In addition, it was expected that young seedling of corn with saline tolerance may be utilized in the transplantation in salt-accumulated land. Based on above-shown result, in terms of saline tolerance of Chalok-2 variety, growth suppression was serious with 100mM NaCl solution. However, growth was expected that seedling growth would be favorable under 50 mM NaCl solution.

  • The PDMS-NaYzeolite composite membranes were prepared by adding 1~40 wt% NaYzeolite to PDMS. In order to investigate the characteristics of these membranes, we used the analytical methods such as FT-IR, $^1H$-NMR, and SEM. The permselectivity of $H_2$ and $N_2$ gases through the composite membranes was studied as a function of NaYzeolite contents. The permeability and selectivity ($H_2/N_2$) of PDMS membrane increased as the gas permeation pressure increased. The permeability of the PDMS-NaYzeolite composite membranes increased when 1~10 wt% NaYzeolite was added, and then decreased at higher wt% as NaYzeolite content increased. The selectivity ($H_2/_2$) of PDMS-NaYzeolite composite membranes decreased when 1~2 wt% NaYzeolite was added, and then increased as NaYzeolite content increased. As the $H_2$ permeability increased, the selectivity ($H_2/N_2$) of PDMS-NaYzeolite composite membranes decreased at 0~2 wt% and 10~40 wt% NaYzeolite contents, increased at 2~10 wt% NaYzeolite content.

  • This study was carried out to determine the possibility of making fiberboard through the dry forming process, utilizing the tannin-like material of the Asplund pulp from the silk worm oak as a binder. The fiberboard was made through paraformaldehyde treatment, spray of NaOH solution and adjustment of mat moisture content, by hot-pressing at $220^{\circ}C$, and 50-6-50kg/$cm^2$ pressure with 6-min. (0.6-1.8-3.6) three-stage pressing cycle. The results are summarized as follows: 1. The modulus of rupture value of fiberboard treated with NaOH solution was greater than that of untreated. The value was increased in proportion to the paraformaldehyde content from I to 5%, but there was no increasing between 5 and 7% paraformaldehyde content. The value became higher along with the increase of mat moisture content from 15% to 25%. 2. The water adsorption of fiberboard treated with NaOH solution was lower than that of untreated. The value was de"creased in proportion to the paraformaldehyde content from 1 to 5%, but there was no decreasing between 5 and 7% paraformaldehyde content.. 3. A good quality fiberboard (modulus of rupture value of about 250kg/$cm^2$) was made through 5% paraformaidehyde treatment and 3% treatment of 10% NaOH solution, when the mat moisture content was 25%. was 25%.

  • The purpose of this research was to investigate the effect of calcium levels(50, 100 and 200% of requirement) on metabolism of Ca, Na and K in Young and adult female rats for 3 weeks. There was no significant difference in feed intake, body weight gain and feed efficiency ratio among the groups of different Ca intake level. Serum Na level of high-Ca group was significantly lower than that of low-Ca or normal-Ca group in Young rats. There was no significant difference in liver Ca and K contents among the groups of different Ca intake levels. But, Na content in liver was decreased by the increase of dietary Ca intake. Ca content in kidney of high-Ca group in young rats and normal-Ca group in adult rats were significantly higher than those of other groups. Na content in kidney of low-Ca group was lower than those of normal-Ca and high-Ca groups. Urinary excretions of Na and K and fecal excretion of Ca were increased by the increase of dietary Ca intake. But, fecal excretions of Na and K were not affected by dietary Ca intake. According to this study, it was found that the high Ca consumption promotes excretions of fecal Ca and urinary Na and K in rats. The study verifies the need for more study on the interrelationship among Ca, Na and K metabolism and bood pressure.
