  • Si:Ge alloy semiconductor nanocrystals (NCs) offer challenging opportunities for integrated optoelectronics/optoplasmonics, since they potentially allow unprecedentedly strong light-matter interaction in the wavelength range of the optical communication. In this talk, we discuss the recent research efforts of my laboratory to develop optoelectronic components based on individual group IV NCs. We present experimental demonstration of the individual NC optoelectronic devices, including broadband Si:Ge nanowire (NW) photodetectors, intra NW p-n diodes, Ge NC electrooptical modulators and near-field plasmonic NW detectors, where the unique size effects at the nanometer scales commonly manifest themselves. In particular, we demonstrated a scanning photocurrent imaging technique to investigate dynamics of photocarriers in individual Si:Ge NWs, which provides spatially and spectrally resolved local information without ensemble average. Our observations represent inherent size-effects of internal gain in semiconductor NCs, thereby provide a new insight into nano optoplasmonics.

Observed tropical cyclone wind flow characteristics

  • Since 1998, several institutions have deployed mobile instrumented towers to collect research-grade meteorological data from landfalling tropical cyclones. This study examines the wind flow characteristics from seven landfalling tropical cyclones using data collected from eight individual mobile tower deployments which occurred from 1998-2005. Gust factor, turbulence intensity, and integral scale statistics are inspected relative to changing surface roughness, mean wind speed and storm-relative position. Radar data, acquired from the National Weather Service (NWS) Weather Surveillance Radar - 1988 Doppler (WSR-88D) network, are examined to explore potential relationships with respect to radar reflectivity and precipitation structure (convective versus stratiform). The results indicate tropical cyclone wind flow characteristics are strongly influenced by the surrounding surface roughness (i.e., exposure) at each observation site, but some secondary storm dependencies are also documented.

Fabrication of silicon nano-ribbon and nano-FETs by using AFM anodic oxidation

  • AFM anodic oxidation has the capability of patterning complex nano-patterns under relatively high speeds and low voltage. We report the fabrication using a atomic force microscopy (AFM) of silicon nano-ribbon and nano-field effect transistors (FETs). The fabricated nano-patterns have great potential characteristics in various fields due to their interesting electronic, optical and other profiles. The results shows that oxide width and the separation between the oxide patterns can be optimally controlled. The subsequently fabricated silicon nano-ribbon and nano-FET working devices were controled by various tip-sample bias-voltages and scan speed of AFM anodic oxidation. The results may be applied for highly integration circuits and sensitive optical sensor applications.

Flexible device 상용화를 위한 flexible supercapacitor 연구

  • 스마트폰, 태블릿 등의 디바이스의 발전에 따라 휴대성이 매우 중요해졌다. 디바이스의 크기, 두께, 유연성에 관한 연구가 활발히 진행되고 있으며, 그 중에서도 energy storage device의 flexibility를 향상시키는 연구가 주목 받고 있다. Energy storage device의 성능 향상을 위해서는 power density를 높여야 하며 flexibility를 위해서는 전극판과 전극소재 간의 부착력을 증가시켜야 한다. 본 연구에서는, power density와 소재 간의 부착성을 개선시키기 위해 기존 graphene보다 표면적이 넓으며 power density가 좋고 전극판과의 부착성이 좋은 hybrid GNP-CNT를 사용하였다. 그리고 Ag NWs/CNT PET film 을 사용하여 전도성이 있는 flexible한 전극판을 사용하였다. SEM 측정을 통해 표면 분석을 하였고, sample에 패턴을 하고 Bending test를 하여 부착성을 확인하였다. 또한, CV curve를 측정하여 supercapacitor의 특성을 확인하였다. 향후, $MnO_2$ NWs를 hybrid GNP-CNT에 합성시킴으로 energy storage device의 energy density를 더욱 향상시키는 연구를 진행할 것이다.

Fabrication of Silver Nanowire-Graphene Oxide Hybrid Transparent Conductive Thin Film with Improved Mechanical Stability (기계적 안정성이 향상된 은나노와이어-그래핀옥사이드 하이브리드 투명 전도성 박막의 제작)

  • In this study, we used GO (graphene oxide) in order to enhance the adhesion between Ag NWs (nanowires) and substrates. By using a mixture solution of GO and Ag NW, a vacuum filtration process was used to fabricate a 50nm diameter thin film. Next, by using a light annealing process, the mechanical and electrical stability of Ag NW network was improved without any other treatment. The physical properties of the Ag NW - GO hybrid transparent conductive thin film was characterized in terms of a bending test, resistance and transmittance test, and nanoscale imaging using field-emission scanning electron microscopy.

  • 원격탐사 자료를 이용한 토지피복도로부터 유역의 식생상황을 고려한 지표면 조도계수를 추정하기 위한 물리적 기반의 지표면 조도계수 추정방법을 제안하였다. 사전 연구로써 지표면 조도계수의 변화에 따른 첨두유량, 유출체적, 첨두시간에 대한 반응을 분석하기 위하여 NWS-PC 모형을 사용하였다. predominant, arithmetic mean, aggregation방법으로 구해진 지표면 조도계수가 강우-유출 모형의 매개변수에 미치는 영향을 분석하였다. 지표면 조도계수에 대한 민감도 분석에서는 첨두유량이 약 10%의 변화를 나타내었고, 유출체적의 경우 약 2%의 변화를 나타내었다. 첨두시간은 지표면 조도계수에 비례하여 증가하는 것으로 나타났다.

Derivation of Design Flood Using Multisite Rainfall Simulation Technique and Continuous Rainfall-Runoff Model

  • Hydrologic pattern under climate change has been paid attention to as one of the most important issues in hydrologic science group. Rainfall and runoff is a key element in the Earth's hydrological cycle, and associated with many different aspects such as water supply, flood prevention and river restoration. In this regard, a main objective of this study is to evaluate design flood using simulation techniques which can consider a full spectrum of uncertainty. Here we utilize a weather state based stochastic multivariate model as conditional probability model for simulating the rainfall field. A major premise of this study is that large scale climatic patterns are a major driver of such persistent year to year changes in rainfall probabilities. Uncertainty analysis in estimating design flood is inevitably needed to examine reliability for the estimated results. With regard to this point, this study applies a Bayesian Markov Chain Monte Carlo scheme to the NWS-PC rainfall-runoff model that has been widely used, and a case study is performed in Soyang Dam watershed in Korea. A comprehensive discussion on design flood under climate change is provided.

  • 본 연구에서는 저수지군 연계운영을 위한 표본 추계학적 선형 계획(SSLP, Sampling Stochastic Linear Programming) 모형을 제안한다. 일반적 추계학적 모형은 과거 자료로부터 확률변수의 확률분포를 추정하고 이를 몇 개 구간으로 나누어 이산 확률 값을 산정하여 기댓값이 최대가 되는 운영방안을 도출하지만 저수지 유입량 예측시 고려되어야할 지속성 효과(Persistemcy Effect)와 유역간 또는 시점별 공분산 효과(The joint spatial and temporal correlations)를 반영하는데 많은 한계가 있다. 이를 극복하기 위하여 과거자료 자체를 유입량 시나리오로 적용하여 시${\cdot}$공간적 상관관계를 유지하는 표본 추계학적(Sampling Stochastic)기법을 바탕으로 Simple Recourse Model로 구성한 추계학적 선형 계획 모형을 제시한다. 이 모형은 미국 기상청(NWS)에서 발생 가능한 유입량의 시나리오를 예측하는 방법인 앙상블 유량 예측(ESP, Ensemble Streamflow Prediction)을 통한 시나리오를 적용함으로써 좀더 신뢰성 있는 저수지군 연계운영 계획을 도출 할 수 있을 것으로 기대된다.

  • 그리드 컴퓨팅은 우주과학, 수학적인 큰 문제들을 해결하기 위해 네트워크 상에 분산된 수많은 컴퓨터들의 컴퓨팅 파워와 대용량 저장장치를 공유하여 문제들을 해결할 수 있는 기술이다. 그리드 컴퓨팅의 환경은 WAN으로 구성된 각기 다른 성능과 이질적인 네트워크 상태들로 구성된다. 이런 이질적인 성능요소들을 고려하여 계산 작업에 반영시키는 것이 무엇보다 중요하다. 본 논문에서는 WAN 환경의 네트워크 상태 정보 중 latency, bandwidth, latency-bandwidth 혼합정보들을 고려하여, 노드별로 작업 프로세스 수를 결정하는 방법을 제안한다. 본 논문에서의 네트워크 성능정보 수집은 NWS(Network Weather Service)를 통해 이뤄지며, 평가결과 네트워크 성능정보를 고려하지 않은 균등방식에 비해서 latency, latency-bandwidth 고려한 방법의 결과가 9%, 31% 성능이 향상되었다.

Novel P(VDF-TrFE) Polymer Electrolytes: Their Use in High-Efficiency, All-Solid-State Electrochemical Capacitors Using ZnO Nanowires

  • For the first time, an innovative approach using P(VDF-TrFE) as a polymer electrolyte for high efficiency, all-solid-state supercapacitors is presented. The polymer electrolyte was successfully achieved by dissolving P(VDF-TrFE) copolymers in dimethylformamide (DMF). Thermal analysis and infrared spectroscopy revealed excellent thermal stability up to $400^{\circ}C$ and copolymer's interaction with DMF. Electrochemical capacitors fabricated using P(VDF-TrFE) in DMF and ZnO NWs demonstrated high capacitive performance. Furthermore, the gel electrolyte-based supercapacitors demonstrated excellent mechanical durability up to a bend angle of $120^{\circ}$. Novel P(VDF-TrFE) electrolytes could be a promising approach for applications in flexible, fabric-based, and high-efficiency energy devices.
