The main purpose of this study was to examine the application of the root system as a shore protection material through the measurement of the 개ot growth curve of Salix gracilisyla Miq. depending on the cutting size. As materials and methodology, nine group of cuttings were classified by the length(l0cm, 20cm, 40cm) and the diameter(0.72cmm$\pm$0,02, 0.58cm$\pm$0.02, 0.35cm$\pm$0.02), Each group was stuck to a flooding bed of sandy loam(Sand 60,36%, Silt 28%, Clay 11.64%) on 27th March 2001, After 65 growing days, the weight and length of the newly developed roots, shoots, and leaves were measured and analysed, This was repeated at 99, 129, 159, and 190 growing days. The major findings were as follows. The primary determinant of the root growth rate was on the weight of cutting, The secondary determinant was on the number of growing days. In addition, the dominant dimension of the cutting was the diameter rather than the length, The thicker cutting caused more rapid and stable growth however the longer cutting made the growth of the root slower and more unstable.

To establish in vitro axillary bud culture conditions of Echinosophora koreensis Nakai, one of Korean endemic endangered species famous for beautiful flowers, we tested the influence of plant growth regulators (PGRs) in shooting and rooting stage from in vitro plants. In shoot multiplication, addition of 6-benzylaminopurine (BA) to the media induced 2.5 to 3 shoots per bud during 4 weeks of culture. And media including 0.5 mg L-1 thidiazuron (TDZ) produced 3 to 4 shoots per bud. However, zeatin and isopentenyl adenine (2-ip) were not successful to increase shoot number, and the combination treatments of BA with other PGRs were also not effective. Shoots were smaller than 2 cm in length, in most of the treatments. In rooting, naphthalene acetic acid (NAA) treatments in the range of 0.5 to 4.0 mg L-1 appeared to increase rooting rate by 10% to 60% approximately when compared with the control but roots developed with callus clusters. Indole butyric acid (IBA) addition had little effect on rooting (below 10%), while some roots were longer than in NAA treatments and some shoots were longer on high IBA concentrations (4.0 to 8.0 mg L-1). It is suggested that micropropagation is a highly applicable and promising to multiplication and conservation of rare and endangered endemic species.
This study was conducted to elucidate the effect of organic fertilizer on growth characteristics, saponin contents and antioxident activity of Platycodin grandiflorum Ridix roots for organic farming. As basal fertilizers, chemical fertilizer, mixed organic fertilizer, bacterial cultures and fermented oil cake and decomposed manure were treated based on 3 kg/10a level before transplanting Platycodin grandiflorum Ridix. In root length, when chemical fertilizer plot and mixed organic fertilizer plot were treated, root length was recorded the highest scores (25.3 and 24.0 cm) Root width was recorded the highest score (26.6 cm) in chemical fertilizer plot. The number of fine-roots was the highest in mixed organic fertilizer plot and chemical fertilizer plot (20.0 and 17.0), respectively. Fresh weight, which affects directly yield, was the highest in organic fertilizer plot (55.7 g/plant). The content of Platycodin D was shown to 327.4~373.8 mg/100 g, the highest values were observed in organic fertilizer plot. The total polyphenol and flavonoid contents were recorded the highest scores (15.5 and 15.3 mg/g, respectively) in organic fertilizer plot. In this study we confirmed that application of organic fertilizer was effective to increase yield and pharmacological effect through increase of the number of fine-roots with high saponin contents.

Rhizotron technique was used to determine the zone of active root growth in contrasting field situations. The distribution of roots with depth showed most root in the 15∼30 cm layer with fewer in the 0∼15 cm and below 30 cm layer at Lincoln Farm, while root density increased with depth at Winchmore. At Mt Johm (Lake Tekapo) roots were more distributed near soil surface. Root density was increased with fertilizer and irrigation at Mt John. Root number showed the same trends as root length at all lesions. Tube method was good for comparative purposes, and for long-term root growth studies at the same place.
The experiments were carried out to compare the growth characteristics of excised seminal roots in Japonica type, Indica- Japonica hybrids and its parents. Based on the modified culture medium by Kawata et al., several levels of pH. sucrose and casamino acid were varied in the culture media. The excised root length at 27$^{\circ}C$ incubator was little different between Japonica type and Indica-Japonica hybrids, but at 30$^{\circ}C$ incubator the excised root elongation of Indica-Japonica hybrids was much better than that of Japonica type. The dry matter weight of excised root in Indica- Japonica hybrids was significantly heavier than in Japonica type at both 27 and 30$^{\circ}C$ incubators. The difference of dry root weight between Japonica type and Indica- Japonica hybrids was caused from the number of lateral roots, especially the root numbers of 25 cm length. The main and lateral seminal root growth of Japonica type grew best at the lot of 0.2 percent casamino acid. However, the lots of 0 and 0.2 percent casamino acid showed good results in the main and lateral excised root growth. respectively of Indica-Japonica hydrids. The growth of excised roots was better in Indica-Japonica hybrids than in Japonica type at even various levels of pH, sucrose and casamino acid. Between the parents of Indica - Japonica hybrids, the excised root growth of Indica type was more predominant than that of Japonica type, and the effect of casamino acid on the excised root growth in the formar was similar to that of Indica type. This result indicated that the growth characteristics of excised seminal roots in Indica Japonica hybrids were derived from the parent, Indica type.
This study was conducted with two objectives ; one was to select the suitable soybean cultivars for cultivation in paddy field and the other was to establish the environment-friendly rotational cropping system of soybean instead of rice in paddy field. In order to evaluate growth adaptation and yields, Eve soybean cultivars were cultivated in Yeoncheon, Keonggi province, with two cultivation methods such as level row and high ridge. Growth of the top plants, such as stem length, number of branches, diameter of stem, were higher in high ridge than in level row, however, the differences among the cultivars were bigger than those between the cultivation methods. Dry weight of top plant was significantly different among the cultivars during whole growth stages, however, it was higher in level row than in high ridge at V5 stage while it became higher in high ridge as growth progressed. Roots were more developed in high ridge than in level row during whole growth stages. T/R ratio in level row was higher than that in high ridge. During whole growth stages, significant differences were observed among the cultivars in growth and yields in each cultivation method and yields of Eunhakong was the highest. In results, number of nodules and T/R ratio at V5 stage, number of pods at R2 stage, and number of seeds and T/R ratio at R5 stage had highly correlated with yields, respectively.
Two edible plants, Allium victorialis var. platyphyllum and Ligularia stenocephala, and one medicinal plant, Panax ginseng, were cultivated in the understory of an artificial Larix kaempferi plantation for ten years. Growth characteristics (number of leaves and flower stalks per plant, and leaf length and width), survival rate, and yield (fresh weight of plants) per unit area (1 ㎡) were investigated one year after planting, and six and ten years following cultivation. P. ginseng and L. stenocephala survived at a high percentage for two years after planting. Results showed that P. ginseng had longer and thicker roots when aged; however, a large number of plants died and the yield was low. In contrast, almost half of A. victorialis var. platyphyllum died within two years of planting. The surviving plants grew well for ten years and the yield was increased. The leaf length and width of L. stenocephala increased; however, the survival rate and the number of leaves per plant decreased as the period of cultivation was extended. In contrast, A. victorialis var. platyphyllum survived at a lower rate (50%) than the two other crops (98% for L. stenocephala and 83% for P. ginseng) during the early cultivation period, with little change in the survival rate over an extended time; however, the yields increased. This species showed an increase in the number of flower stalks and leaves, and as a result, the larger leaves increased the yield. We evaluated the understory cultivation of three crops in a L. kaempferi plantation under natural conditions, with no irrigation or fertilization, and Allium victorialis var. platyphyllum showed the greatest growth potential among the three tested crops.
An efficient micropropagation protocol based on multiple shoot induction and callus regeneration has been standardized in Sarcostemma brevistigma, a rare medicinal plant. The nodal cuttings were cultured on MS medium supplemented with BA ($0.5-8{\mu}M$) or Kn ($0.5-8{\mu}M$) alone or in combination with NAA ($0.5-1.5{\mu}M$). Maximum multiple shoot induction was observed on MS medium supplemented with $4{\mu}M$ BA. On this medium, 100% cultures responded with an average number of 11.3 shoots per explant. However, the average shoot length was limited to only 0.9 cm on this medium. The addition of $1{\mu}M$ NAA along with $4{\mu}M$ BA gave rise to an average number of 10.9 shoots with an average shoot length of 1.8 cm. Luxuriantly growing callus was obtained on MS medium supplemented with BA ($5{\mu}M$) and 2,4-D ($2{\mu}M$). The callus was subcultured on MS medium supplemented with BA ($2-15{\mu}M$) or Kn ($2-15{\mu}M$) alone or in combination with NAA ($0.5-2{\mu}M$) for shoot organogenesis. Optimum callus regeneration was obtained on MS medium supplemented with $10{\mu}M$ BA and $1{\mu}M$ NAA. On this medium, 100% cultures responded with an average number of 13.4 shoots per culture. The shoots obtained via multiple shoot induction and organogenesis were rooted on half-strength MS medium supplemented with NAA ($1-7{\mu}M$) or IBA ($1-7{\mu}M$). IBA was better than NAA in terms of both the percentage of cultures that responded and the average number of roots per explant. The rooted shoots were successfully transplanted to soil with 86% success. This standardized protocol will help to conserve this rare medicinal plant.

Calystegia soldanella L. is a perennial herbaceous halophyte belonging to the convolvulaceae family, which mainly grows in coastal sand dunes in Korea. Shoots and rhizomes are edible, and roots called 'Hyoseon Chogeun' are known to have medicinal effects such as antipyretic, sterilization, and diuretic. In addition, physiological activities of antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antiviral, antifungal and PTP-1B (protein tyrosine phosphate-1B) inhibition have been reported. In this study, in vitro induction cell lines of C. soldanella L. collected from the coastal sand dunes in Jeju island was redifferentiated into adventitious roots that can be used as medicinal resources. Also the biomass of mass-proliferated adventitious roots using a bioreactor were evaluated. Plants of C. soldanella L. were collected from the crevice of the seashore in the coastal area of Taeheung 2-ri, Namwon-eup, Seogwipo-si. Then, it was separated into leaves, stems, rhizomes, and roots, and surface sterilized with 70% ethyl alcohol and 2% NaOCl (sodium hypochlorite). After washing with sterilized water, each organ section was cultured in Hormone-free MS medium (Murashige & Skoog Medium). As a result, the induction response rates were evaluated at 85% and 55%, respectively, in terms of callus formation and shoot generation in the rhizome segment. In the case of the adventitious roots morphological characteristics induced by single-use treatment of auxin-based plant growth regulators IBA and NAA from redifferentiated shoots were compared. Most efficient adventitious root culture method as a rooting rate, number, length, and biomass proliferation in the bioreactor system was confirmed when treated by culturing in MS salts, Sucrose 30 g·L-1, and IBA 1mg·L-1 for 4 weeks. In this study, the medium composition and culture period were confirmed using a bioreactor system to mass-proliferate adventitious roots derived from C. soldanella L. in Jeju island. Also this adventitious root line developed a new medicinal material could increase value of the bio-industry ingredient through quantitative and qualitative screening of phyto-bioactive compounds.
Experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of size of root crown at transplanting and fertilization on the growth and root yield of Angelica gigas Nakai. Plant height and fresh weight of shoots were increased by fertilizer application, but was not different in emergence rate. Size of root crown at transplanting was also affected the growth of shoot. Plant which had 7.2mm of root crown at transplanting showed highest in plant height and fresh weight of shoots. Growth of root in terms of root length, number of root branches, diameter of root crown, and fresh weight of root was increased by fertilizer application and 5.4mm of root crown at transplanting. Application of fertilizer accelerated the development and growth of node on the stem, which in turn resulted bolting and flowering. Plants which had greater than 7.2mm of root crown at transplanting and application of fertilizer were produced woody roots. Woody roots cannot be used for medicinal purpose. Therefore, yield of roots was highest at transplanting of 3.lmm root crown with fertilizer application.
