  • To assess the adverse effects of suspended solids on fishes, the hatching rate of embryo, and survival and growth of larvae were measured with common fish species of river such as crusian carp (Carassius auratus), common carp (Cyprinus carpio) and medaka (Oryzias latipes). Bioassay on hatching rate of embryo was conducted with a range of turbidity as 10 levels from 0.2 to 8,080 NTU. Another bioassay on 4-day larval survival and 21-day larval growth were also conducted with a range of turbidity as 8 levels from 0.1 to 8,260 NTU, and 6 levels from 0.7 to 2,030 NTU, respectively. The hatching rate of C. auratus was not significantly different from that of control at turbidity below 4,040 NTU, whereas it decreased when turbidity was 8,080 NTU (p<0.05). The hatching rate of C. carpio was not affected by concentration of suspended solids. For O. latipes, the hatching rate significantly decreased from 254 NTU (p<0.001) and it was zero when turbidity was 8,080 NTU. The 4-day survival of larvae of all 3 species was not affected by turbidity, while the larval growth of all 3 species was significantly affected. The turbidity effect on the growth of C. auratus and C. carpio was observed from 7 days after the exposure at turbidity level of 145, 143 NTU, respectively. The turbidity effect on the growth of O. latipes was observed from 14 days after the exposure at turbidity level of 254 NTU. The results of this study will provide the basic information for the derivation of water quality criteria on suspended solids for the protection of aquatic ecosystem and the quantitative ecological risk assessment of freshwater environment.

  • This study was carried out to find the optimum coagulation conditions for ceramic microfiltration process of Y water treatment plant. When pH of raw water from Y Dam was adjusted to 7, the efficiency of coagulation was the best and the optimun dosage of coagulant was 3 mg/L(as $Al_2O_3$) for turbidity of raw water less then 10 NTU in Jar test. In mini module test, the decay rate of specific flux was the lowest when PAC (poly Aluminum Chloride) was used among coagulants and pH was adjusted to 7. The decay rate of specific flux for raw water turbidity of 10~30 NTU was greatly decreased with increase of dosage of coagulant (PAC) while the rate was not significantly decreased for turbidity more than 50 NTU. In conclusion, the optimum dosage of PAC (11% as $Al_2O_3$) was 30 and 50 mg/L for raw water turbidity of less than 10 NTU and more than 50 NTU, respectively. The dosage of PAC should be increased linearly 30 to 50 mg/L depending on raw water turbidity of 10 to 50 NTU.

  • This study was performed to determine the optimum coagulant dosing amount for effective treatment of raw water. The removal rate of turbidity and the variations of water qualities according to various dosage of coagulants such as Alum, PAC and PACS were investigated. The optimum coagulant dosing amount to make the lowest turbidity of water were 35mg/ι t of Alum, 30mg/ι of PAC and 10mg/ι of PACS in case of 5 NTU of raw water turbidity, and 30mg/ι of Alum, 25mg/ι of PAC and 10mg/ι of PACS in case of 10 NTU of that, respectively. The removal rates of turbidity at 4 min. and 8 min. of settling time were 10 and 72% of Alum, 44 and 62% of PAC and 25 and 55% of PACS in case of 5 NTU, and 52 and 70% of Alum, 90 and 95% of PAC and 10 and 28% of PACS in case of 10 NTU, respectively. Judging from the settling capability of floc., the reaction time of floe. formation and removal efficiency of turbidity, PAC was evaluated as more effective coagulant than Alum and PACS. Also PAC was regarded as the most effective coagulant when the water supply was changed sharply and the fluctuation of the surface loading occured with wide and sharp in settling basin. pH and alkalinity of the water were decreased with increasing coagulants dosage. But pH and alkalinity were not decreased below 5.8 which is the standard for drinking water quality, and 10mg/ι which is the limit concentration of floc. breakage, respectively. Residual Al of the treated water was decreased with increasing coagulants dosage in case of 5 and 10NTU of raw water turbidity. $KMnO_4$ consumption of the water was decreased with increasing coagulants dosage. The reduction rate of $KMnO_4$ consumption at the optimum coagulants dosage were 39% of Alum. 18% of PAC and 11% of PACS in case of 5 NTU of raw water turbidity, and 42% of Alum, 27% of PAC and 36% of PACS in case of 10 NTU of that, respectively. Any relationship was not found between the removal rate of turbidity and KMnO$_4$ consumption. TOC of the water was a bit decreased with increasing coagulants dosage up to 30mg/ι but not changed above 30mg/ι of coagulants dosage. The degree of TOC reduction was increased in the order of Alum, PAC and PACS treatment. Zeta potential of the colloidal floe. at the optimum coagulants dosage was in the range of -20~-15mV in case of 5 NTU of raw water turbidity and 0~0.5mV in case of 10 NTU of that. respectively. Although the kinds and dosages of coagulants were different, zeta potential range were fixed under the conditions of the best coagulation efficiency.

  • Present study aims to study antioxidant enzyme activity due to turbidity change in various tissues of Carassius auratus. As for the changes of antioxidant enzyme activity in tissues of C. auratus pursuant to the raising period under 50, 100, and 150 NTU with turbid water levels, there was no great difference between 50 NTU and 100 NTU compared to a control (0 NTU), however, it demonstrated a relatively noticeable difference at 150 NTU high turbid water level. When considering the antioxidant capacity in tissues of C. auratus in terms of DPPH free radical scavenging activity, there was shown a high activity in gill and liver tissues, therefore, it is thought that there appears a non-enzymatic antioxidant reaction when C. auratus is reared under the condition of highly turbid water. As for the enzymatic antioxidant reaction of antioxidant enzyme activity got increased as turbid water level went higher in order of 50, 100, 150 NTU, and the activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and glutathione-s-transperase (GST), increased in all tissues except for an integument, up to 20th day when it was started to be reared, and they showed a gradual decrease as time passed by. However, since the activity of glutathione reductase (GR) and glutathione peroxidase (GPX) is very low in almost all tissues, it is thought that the role of those enzymes would be quite ignorable in the course of antioxidant process.

  • A conventional silica gel/water adsorption chiller has been analyzed numerically. A novel non-dimensional mathematical model has been presented to analyze the design effect of different components of an adsorption chiller. The design parameters of this system are characterized by the number of transfer unit, NTU, of different components and the inert material alpha number, ${\alpha}$of different components of the systems. Results show that condenser NTU$\sub$a/ has the most influential effect on the system performance, which is fellowed by absorber NTU$\sub$e/. It is also seen that coefficient of performance (COP) and non-dimensional specific cooling capacity increases with the increase of NTU$\sub$a/ and NTU$\sub$e/, but decreases with the increase of inert material alpha number. A thermo-economic data of the adsorption chiller and some other heat pump systems those are in practical operation are also presented.

  • The objective of this study was to evaluate the backwashing frequency and method on the Granular Activated Carbon (GAC) in G WTP. A backwashing period was determined as 50 days and 60 days, respectively. Prior to Backwashing by head loss build, biomass concentration in effluent as constant and DO concentration was maintained more than 11.5 mg/L in GAC bed. Peak turbidity of backwashing water was 73.6~303 NTU. Mean turbidity of backwashing water at initial 9 minute of backwash operation was 50.7~82.8 NTU. After 30 minute backwashing operation, final turbidity reaches approximately 10 NTU. The frequency of backwashing and turbidity of backwashing water overtime were evaluated. At 20days of backwashing frequency, the peak turbidity was 73 NTU and 42 NTU respectively when 10% and 25% of expansion of GAC were applied. At 14 minute of backwashing time, it was observed that turbidity of 10% expansion of GAC was higher than that of 20% expansion.

  • A ceramic monolith heat exchanger is studied to find the performance of heat transfer and pressure drop by numerical computation and $\xi$-NTU method. The numerical computation was performed throughout the domain including fluid region in exhaust gas-side rectangular ducts, ceramic core and fluid region in air-side rectangular duct with the air and exhaust in cross flow direction. In addition, the heat exchanger was also analyzed to estimate the performance by conventional $\xi$-NTU method with several Nusselt number correlations for flow in rectangular duct from literature. By comparisons of both performances by the numerical computation and the $\xi$-NTU method, the effectiveness by $\xi$-NTU method was closest to the result by numerical computation within a relative error of 2.14% when Stephan's Nusselt number correlation was adopted to the $\xi$-NTU method among the several correlations.

  • Some companies are trying to develop the microfiltration membranes because most of them used as a prefilter is imported in Korea. However, they are faced with much difficulty such as characterization of membrane and controlling of pore size on development. In this study, a microfiltration membrane developed by a company was evaluated for applicability to use as a prefilter before reverse osmosis membrane process in production of ultra pure water. The optimum feed pressure for the raw water was obtained at 0.2 to 0.4 atm. At that time, turbidity of the treated water was 0.4 NTU and flux was 6,000 to $9,000L/m^2/hr$. In case of the conventionally treated water, it showed the very stable flux and turbidity at 90% of recovery rate. The chemical cleaning was helpful to reduce the TMP for treated water. The turbidity was improved from 0.3 NTU to 0.1 NTU after chemical cleaning.
