  • Generally, it is announced that RZ pattern gives a better transmission performance than NRZ pattern in ultra-high speed transmission above 10Gbps. In this paper, we propose a wavelength converter for RZ data which can controls XPM in SOA by locating polarization controllers within optical fiber loop mirror and demonstrate its performance through simulation and 10Gbps data experiment. The proposed structure needs only one polarization dependent SOA for implementation compared to previous XPM ones to make the cost down. And it provides non-inverted pattern outputs at two output ports respectively.

  • In this paper, visible light wireless communication system according to the climate is studied in the marine environment. The light visibility can be determined by the different weather conditions (clear air, rain, storm, fog) in Kim's atmospheric channel model. By simulating the OOK-NRZ modulation technique, the BER performances are compared in the different weather conditions. In the field test, the error bit is measured in the visible-light communication. The effectiveness of visible light communication in the marine environment is confirmed by comparing the analysis of simulations and field experiments.

  • We propose the performance enhancing method optimization of an asynchronous 2.5 Gbps/1.25 Gbps optical subscriber network with inverse RZ (Return to Zero) coded downstream and NRZ (Non Return to Zero) upstream re-modulation by adjusting threshold level control of a receiver. We theoretically analyze the BER (Bit Error Rate) performance by modeling the occurrence of BER by simulation with MATLAB according to the types of downstream data. The results have shown that the normalized threshold level in an optical receiver could be saturated at 1/3 as the SNR (Signal to Noise Ratio) increases. The needed SNR for obtaining the BER $10^{-9}$ can be reduced by $\sim$5 dB by optimizing the normalized threshold level at 1/3 instead of by using the conventional receiver with threshold level of 0.5. The proposed system can be a useful technology for asynchronous optical access networks with asymmetric upstream and downstream data rates, because the improved minimum receiving power could replace a light source with a source with lower power and lower cost in an OLT (Optical Line Termination).

  • A simulation of 10 Gbps optical fiber transmission system using DCf(dispersion compensating fiber) for the dispersion compensation is performed. In order to analyze the NRZ pulse propagation in nonlinear, dispersive and lossy fiber, the split-step finite element method that is combination of finite element method and finite difference method is used. Also, we obtained the optical eye diagram and BER characteristics at the receiver of the system that is contained the optical amplifier and system noises. As a result of simulation, we obtain that the dispersion penalty is about 0.8dB after 50km transmission and the receiver sensitivities at $10^{-9}$ BER are -27.4dBm with EDFA pre-amplifier of 12dB gain and -15.6dBm without EDFA.

  • We propose a novel method to reduce laser chirp and improve modulation performance in semiconductor laser by using dual-electrode structure. Dual-electrode structure is realized by segmenting a electrode on top of gain medium, as was the case of edge emitting laser diode, into electrically isolated two electrodes. By using the proposed structure, we have experimentally achieved a reduction of laser spectral width of 0.23 nm and an improvement of 2.5-dB receiver sensitivity at an 80-km fiber transmission for 10-Gbps NRZ (non-return-to zero) data stream.

  • In this paper, we have proposed a bit synchronization algorithm which extracts the synchronized clock for random NRZ signal and designed a circuit followed by its performance analysis. The synchronization circuit consists of the Data Transition Detector and Mod 64 Counter, Phase Comparison and Controller, 64 Divider. The data input rate and master clock rate are 16 Kbps and 4.096MHz, respectively. The phase is compensated by 1/64 of the data signal period for every data bit. Through a series of experiments, the maximum immunity of phase jiter for input signal and the deviation of the recovered clock are measured 23.8% and 1.6%, respectively. The fully digital synchronization circuit is simple to implement into signal IC chip and also effective for the low speed digital mobile communications.

  • The time division multiplexing PCM encoder which is constructed for an airborne telemetering system is investigated. Selected by program switch, the PCM encoder has 0~64 words/framd($\pm$5V full scale) of allowable analog input channels, 0~30bits(5V$\pm$1V or 0V$\pm$1V dc) of discrete channels, 70 and 140K bits/sec of bit rate and 8~12bits/word of resolution. And filtered output PCM code is NRZ-L and Bi-S through the 5 pole Bessel LPF(f=100kHz), and the maximum accuracy of PCM encoder is $\pm$0.2% of its full scale.

  • We report an experimental demonstration of 40 Gbps all-optical 3R regeneration with all-optical clock recovery based on InP semiconductor devices. We also obtain alloptical non-return-to-zero to return-to-zero (NRZ-to-RZ) format conversion using the recovered clock signal at 10 Gbps and 40 Gbps. It leads to a good performance using a Mach-Zehnder interferometric wavelength converter and a self-pulsating laser diode (LD). The self-pulsating LD serves a recovered clock, which has an rms timing jitter as low as sub-picosecond. In the case of 3R regeneration of RZ data, we achieve a 1.0 dB power penalty at $10^{-9}$ BER after demultiplexing 40 Gbps to 10 Gbps with an eletroabsorption modulator. The regenerated 3R data shows stable error-free operation with no BER floor for all channels. The combination of these functional devices provides all-optical 3R regeneration with NRZ-to-RZ conversion.

  • In the basic GMSK, the modulated signals are generated by the preprocessing of NRZ pulse trains with the gaussian low pass filter. In this paper, we proposed the GMSK modulation system with the delta pulse trains. The proposed system constructed with the gaussian pulse generator triggered by the bipolar delta pulse, the differentiator between $+T_b/2$ and $-T_b/2$, and then a matched filter for frequency-modulation function. The spectrum of proposed system was found to be smaller than about 35[%] at 40[dB] attenuated bandwidth, and the center spectrum to be lower than the basic GMSK with zero-crossing property.

  • We propose an active stabilization method for the receiver of NRZ-DPSK transmission. The 1-bit delayed Mach-Zehlder interferometer is thermally controlled to maintain the largest DC component power ratio between the constructive and destructive output ports, for the optimum transmission condition. This method is very cost effective since no additional components are required. Experimental results show that the proposed scheme guarantees error free performance even when there was ~ 1 GHz optical carrier frequency fluctuation in 10 Gbps transmission.
