  • Objective: In clinical practice, there are a lot of exercise to reduce body weight or reduce the amount of body fat in order to solve back pain. However, many studies have contradicted the relationship between back pain and weight or body fat mass. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between fat mass, body mass index and low back pain of office worker. Design: Crossed-sectional study Methods: Among the white-collar workers diagnosed with non-specific back pain by doctors, subjects who were not included in the exclusion criteria were selected to measure the subject's body fat mass, body mass index, pain intensity, and disability index due to back pain. The NPRS was used for the intensity of back pain of office workers, and the ODI was used for the degree of disability due to back pain. A body composition analyzer was used to measure the body fat mass and body mass index of white-collar workers. Results: There was no significant difference between the two groups in the comparison between the normal group and the excessive group according to the criteria of fat mass and body mass index. In the correlation analysis of fat mass, body mass index, pain intensity, and disability index, it was found that there was a significant correlation between fat mass and body mass index. However, neither fat mass nor body mass index had a significant correlation with pain intensity and disability index. Conclusions: The fat mass and body mass index of office worker do not affect low back pain.

  • Objective: This study was conducted to investigate the effect of high-intensity laser therapy(HILT), transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation(TENS), and ultrasound(US) treatment on pain, grip strength, and hand function in patients who had undergone carpal tunnel syndrome surgery. Design: A randomized controlled trial. Methods: Thirty patients who had undergone carpal tunnel syndrome surgery were randomly assigned to receive either TENS combined with HILT, US combined with HILT, or only HILT as the control group. Treatments were applied around the surgical site, and pre- and post-treatment changes were evaluated. Pain was assessed using NPRS, hand symptoms using CTS-6 and BCTQ-SSS, grip strength with an electronic dynamometer, and hand function using BCTQ-FSS. Treatments were administered seven times over two weeks. Results: The pain and symptoms were significantly reduced(p<0.05) and grip strength and hand function were significantly increased(p<0.05) after treatment compared to before treatment for all subjects. Pain was significantly reduced(p<0.05) and grip strength was significantly increased(p<0.05) in the TESN+HILT group and US+HILT group compared to the Control group. Hand symptoms were significantly reduced(p<0.05) and hand function significantly increased(p<0.05) in the TENS+HILT group compared to the Control group. Conclusions: TENS combined with HILT was found to be more effective than US combined with HILT in reducing pain and symptoms and improving grip strength and hand function in patients following carpal tunnel syndrome surgery. These findings suggest that these treatment modalities can be beneficially applied in clinical practice.

  • Background: This study investigated the effects on the range of motion, pain, disability index, and quality of life when applying thoracic mobility exercise in middle-aged women with chronic back pain. Design: pretest-posttest control group design Methods: The study subjects were 32 patients with chronic back pain of 3 months or more among middle-aged women divided 2 groups. All groups were tested thrice a week for 30 minutes per session for four weeks. Each subject was evaluated using the thoracic rotation Range of Motion, the numerical pain rating scale and pressure pain threshold, Disability Index(Oswestry Disability Index), the Quality of Life(SF-36) before and after treatment. Results: As a result of the study, the range of motion at T1 and T2 of the exercise group to which thoracic mobility exercise was applied was significantly increased in both left and right rotations(p<0.05). In the evaluation of pain, the number pain rating scale(NPRS) score decreased significantly(p<0.05), and the pressure pain threshold was significantly increased (p<0.05), but there was no significant difference from the control group. In the evaluation of the disorder index, the Oswestry disorder index decreased significantly after the experiment (p<0.05), and there was a significant difference in group comparison with the control group (p<0.05). In quality of life, there was a significant increase in PCS of SF-36(p<0.05), but there was no significant difference from the control group. Conclusion: Through this study, thoracic mobility exercise can be used as an effective exercise therapy intervention method to improve and promote physical factors of range of motion, pain and disability index, and physical components of quality of life when treating middle-aged women with chronic back pain in the future.
