  • Recently, many technologies have been developed in order to satisfy stringent emission regulations. However, in the case of diesel engines, the stringent emission regulations with respect to NOx and PM have not yet been satisfied. A dramatic reduction in the NOx and PM emissions could be achieved by using after-treatment systems such as lean NOx trap (LNT) and urea-SCR systems. However, the high temperature in the exhaust pipe affects the spray behavior of the secondary injector, which is used for supplying the Urea-SCR. Because of this high temperature, it is difficult to achieve uniform distribution of the reducing agent in the manifold. In this paper, the characteristics of a urea-SCR injector used for injecting in the exhaust pipe are presented. The purpose of this study was to investigate the spray characteristics of the injector, such as the spray angle, injection quantity, and SMD. In addition, laser diagnostics and high-speed-camera images were used to analyze the injector spray characteristics and to present a distribution of reduction in the transparent manifold.

  • A multi-perforated tube is generally installed between the muffler inlet and in front of selective catalytic reduction (SCR) catalysts in the integrated urea-SCR muffler system in order to disperse the urea-water solution spray uniformly and to make better use of the SCR catalyst, which would result in an increase nitrogen oxide ($NO_x$) reduction efficiency and a decrease in the ammonia slip. The effects of the multi-perforated tube orifice area ratios on the internal flow characteristics were investigated analytically by using a general-purpose commercial software package. From the results, it was clarified that the multi-perforated tube geometry sensitively affected the generation of the bulk swirling motion inside the plenum chamber set in front of the SCR catalyst and to the uniformity index of the velocity distribution produced at the inlet of the catalyst. To verify the analytical results, engine tests were carried out in the ESC and ETC modes. Results of these tests indicated that the larger flow model in the longitudinal direction showed the highest NOx reduction efficiency, which was a good agreement with the analytical results.

  • A Study on the optimal design of the AIG(Ammonia Injection Grid) to improve the performance of DeNOx facilities in the HRSG(Heat Recovery Steam Generator) was performed using the CFD analysis. On the basis of the flow analysis results in the case that the AIG in the HRSG was not installed, the numerical analyses according to the positions of AIG, injection angles of nozzle and the control of ammonia injection quantity were carried out. The standard deviation according to factors was calculated for quantitative comparison. As the results, the AIG in the HRSG should be installed in the position that the uniform flow field shows through the exact flow analysis in the previous of the AIG design and installation. In the case the AIG has already been installed and non uniform flow distribution shows, it is recommended that flow correction device or KoNOx catalyst should be used. Otherwise, the control of ammonia injection angle or the ammonia injection quantity using the velocity profile analysis is demanded to accomplish the optimal performance.

  • 3-D CFD(Computational Fluid Dynamics) work were carried out to investigate the combustion characteristics in a boiler depending on the variations in air supply condition. For the gas temperature, $O_2$, NO, SOx at the outlet of economizer, the predicted values were been compared with the measured data. With the verified CFD model, the effects of air flow rates through SOFA(Separated Over Fire Air) and CCOFA(Closed Coupled Over Fire Air) on the combustion behavior in a boiler were simulated, and the distributions of NOx and gas temperature were mainly compared each other. The change in SOFA air flow rate gave the more sensitive effect on NOx than that in CCOFA. The distributions of gas temperature at convection path are differed with the changes in SOFA and CCOFA flow rate, so the combustion modification such as yaw anlge adjustment are required to get an enhanced gas temperature distribution.

  • A secondary injection system in a diesel engine has benefits: it can be controlled independently without interrupting engine control, it can be adapted to various layouts for exhaust systems, and it pose no reductant dilution problems compared to post injection systems in the combustion chamber or other supplemental reductant injections. In a secondary injection system, the efficiency of the catalyst depends on the method of reducing the supply. The reductant needs to be maintained and optimized with constant pressure, the positions and angles of injector is a very important factor. The concentration and amount of reductant can be changed by adjusting secondary injection conditions. However, secondary injection is highly dependent upon the type of injector, injection pressure, atomization, spray technology, etc. Therefore, it is necessary to establish injection conditions the spray characteristics must be well-understood, such as spray penetration, sauter mean diameter, spray angle, injection quantity, etc. Uniform distribution of the reductant corresponding to the maximum NOx reduction in the DeNOx catalyst system must also assured. With this goal in mind, the spray characteristics and impingement plate types of a secondary injector were analyzed using visualization and digital image processing techniques.

  • Gasoline that meets the quality standards is distributed in Korea. However, consumers who use toluene or solvent mixed with gasoline have appeared due to rising crude oil prices and for the purpose of tax evasion. Gasoline quality standard is enacted by the domestic and international research reference. A wrong fuel can influence automobile performance or environmental issue. Thus, empirical data from this issue is necessary. Therefore, this research observed catalyst influence by gasoline property change and inspect influence of environment. In this study, fuel property evaluation, lean-burn evaluation, and real vehicle exhaust emission test were performed. In the result of fuel property, the fuel "A" was measured to be up to 27% less octane than the normal gasoline and the distillation property was measured 24% higher than normal gasoline. In the test result of single cylinder engine lean-burn test, the fuels "A" and "B" show torque value 20% less than the normal gasoline. As a result of vehicle test using the catalyst, the fuel "A" was increased more than the normal gasoline with 83% THC, 1,806% CO and 128% NOx, and the fuel "B" was increased more than normal gasoline with 1.6% THC, 391% CO and 142% NOx.

  • Combustion instabilities are an important concern associated with lean premixed combustion. Laboratory-scale dump combustor was used to understand the underlying mechanisms causing combustion instabilities. Experiments were conducted at atmospheric pressure and sound level meter was used to track the pressure fluctuations inside the combustor. Instability maps and phase-resolved OH chemiluminescence images were obtained at several conditions to investigate the mechanism of combustion instability and relations between pressure wave and heat release rate. It showed that combustion instability was susceptible to occur at higher value of equivalence ratio (>0.6) as the mean velocity was decreased. Instabilities exhibited a longitudinal mode with a dominant frequency of ∼341.8 Hz, which corresponded to a quarter wave mode of combustor. Heat release and pressure waves were in-phase when instabilities occurred. Rayleigh index distribution gave a hint about the location where the strong coherence of pressure and heat release existed. These results also give an insight to the control scheme of combustion instabilities. Emission test revealed that NOx emissions were affected by not only equivalence ratio but also combustion instability.

  • The optimum condition for fabricating cordierite disc type filter element was deduced. Cordierite monolith was used as starting material for filter element because it has many advantages such as high thermal shock resistance and good catalytic activity compared with $TiO_2$and SiC. The contents of organic additives and foaming agent were optimized to control the porosity and mechanical strength of cordierite filter. Among the required properties to be adopted as filter elements, the pressure drop and NOx removal efficiency were investigated depending on processing variables. It was found that pressure drop depends on particle size distribution of cordierite monolith and organic additives added as forming agent. The pressure drop at 5cm/sec of face velocity was in the range of 15~655mm$H_2O$ at room temperature. The NOx removal efficiency of catalytic filter with $V_2O_5$ as catalyst was over 85% at $450^{\circ}C$.
