This study was to clarify the variations in a marine ecosystem through examining the species composition of phytoplankton in the coastal water of Baegyado Island during winter. Water temperature, salinity, SS, NH$_4$-N, NO$_2$-N, NO$_3$-N and SiO$_2$-Si were significantly different and in inverse proportion to the chlorophyll a and species number according to stations and water depth. The total number of species was 88, composed of 94% Bacillariophyceae, 3.4% Chrysophyceae, 2.2% Dinophyceae and 1.1% Euglenophyceae. The dominant species were Rhizosolenia setigera, Skeletonema costatum and Stephanopyxis palmeriana. The maximum of standing crops was $5,450cells{\cdot}ml^(-1)$, while the minimum was $1,700cells{\cdot}ml^(-1)$. The coastal water was influenced with two water bodies which had characteristics of low water temperature - low salinity and high water temperature - high salinity.

In order to understand the relative importance of various pathways leading to the production and transformation of aerosols under different atmospheric conditions, the behavior of atmospheric aerosols have been investigated using a high volume tape sample in Seoul for a week period during August 1990. The concentrations of anion $(SO^{2-}_4, NO^-_3, CI^-)$ and cation $(Ca^{2+}, Na^+, NH^+_4)$ species of aerosol samples were analyzed to identify the ionic composition of aerosols and to estimate their relative contributions to aerosol formation. The concentrations of aerosol species were calculated by a multiple regression model. The results of our calculations indicate the existence of various chemical species such as $(NH_4)_2SO_4, Na_2SO_4, CaSO_4, NH_4NO_3, NaNO_3, Ca(NO_3)_2, NH_4Cl$, and NaCl salts. According to our calculations, the most dominant species of aerosol was $(NH_4)_2SO_4$ with the mean concentration of 23.3 $/mu g/m^3$ (66.9%). The proportion of different componts with aerosol (e.g., $NH_4NO_3$ and $NH_4Cl$) was strongly affected by temperature, relative humidity, and partial presure of gases.

A study has been conducted to clarify NO emission behavior through preferential diffusion effects of $H_2$ and H in methane-hydrogen diffusion flames. A comparison is made by employing three species diffusion models. Special concerns are focused on what is the deterministic role of the preferential diffusion effects in flame structure and NO emission. The behavior of maximum flame temperatures with three species diffusion models is not explained by scalar dissipation rate but the nature of chemical kinetics. The preferential diffusion of H into reaction zone suppresses the populations of the chain carrier radicals and then flame temperature while that of $H_2$ produces the increase of flame temperature. These preferential diffusion effects of $H_2$ and H are also discussed about NO emissions through the three species diffusion models.
Genomic DNA isolated from two Porphyra species, P. tenera and P. dentate from Wando located on the southern coast of Korean peninsula was amplified by PCR reaction. The amplified products were separated by agarose gel electrophoresis (AGE) with decamer primer and stained with ethidium bromide. The eight arbitrarily selected primers OPA-04, OPA-06, OPB-01, OPB-08, OPB-10, OPB-11, OPB-14 and OPC-10 generated the shared loci, polymorphic, and specific loci. The size of DNA bands varies from 100 bp to 2,200 bp. The complexity of the banding patterns varies dramatically between the primers and two Porphyra species. A total of 528 loci observed were identified in P. tenera and 443 in P. dentata: 22 polymorphic loci (4.2%) in P. tenera and 30 (6.8%) in P. dentata. 154 shared loci observed, the average 19.3 per primer, were identified in P. tenera and 143 loci, the aver-age 17.9 per primer, in P. dentata species. The number of specific loci in P. tenera and P. dentata was 73 and 77, respectively. The average bandsharing value was $0.623{\pm}0.008$ with P. tenera and $0.560{\pm}0.009$ within P. dentata. The average bandsharing value between two Porphyra species was $0.408{\pm}0.004$, ranged from 0.305 to 0.564. The dendrogram obtained by the eight primers indicates four genetic clusters. The genetic distance between two Porphyra species ranged from 0.076 to 0.627. The individual no. 02 of P. tenera was genetically closely related to no. 01 of P. tenera(genetic distance=0.082). Especially, two entities between the individual DENTATA no.21 and DENTATA no. 19 of P. dentata showed the longest genetic distance (0.627) in comparison with other individuals used. In this study, RAPD-PCR analysis has revealed the significant genetic distance between two Porphyra species pairs (P<0.001).
Arthonia coreana, Arthonia superpallens, and Arthonia zelkovae are new species from South Korea. All new species are in the Euarthonia tribe, based on the key characteristics of colorless hypothecium and multi-cellular spores. A. coreana has a dull brownish hypophloedal thallus without bleaching and rounded or curved big apothecia in comparison with those of Arthonia punctiformis. A. coreana consistently exhibits 4-septate ascospores, which is a distinctive characteristic that distinguishes it from other Arthonia species. A. superpallens has a white-greenish thallus, pale yellowish apothecia, and a trentepohlioid alga. However, A. superpallens has no distinct prothallus, adnate, and convex apothecia, no pycnidia, and is UV-, in contrast with related species in the Arthonia antillarum group. A. zelkovae has a white, epiphloedal thallus, brownish-black epruinose apothecia covered with a whitish bark layer, and smaller ascospores in comparison with those of A. punctiformis. A. zelkovae consists of a chlorococcoid alga, which differs from related Arthonia species such as A. punctiformis, Arthonia pinastri, and Arthonia glaucella. Although A. zelkovae is similar to Arthonia dispersa in its white-colored thallus, blackish apothecia, and the presence of a chlorococcoid photobiont, A. zelkovae differs from the latter in having larger-sized 3-septate ascospores. Arthonia cinnabarina f. marginata, A. glaucella, Arthonia ilicinella, Arthonia lapidicola, Arthonia leioplacella, Arthonia pertabescens, A. pinastri, Arthonia spadicea, and Arthonia stellaris are newly described in Korea. The diagnostic characteristics of these species are discussed and presented. An artificial key is provided to facilitate identification of Arthonia species from Northeast Asia.
Seven oligonucleotides primers were shown to generate the shared loci, specific loci, unique shared loci to each species and shared loci by the three species which could be obviously scored. In the present study, 7 oligonucleotides primers produced 401 total loci in the Styela clava (SC) species, 390 in the Halocynthia roretzi (HR) and 434 in the Styela plicata (SP), respectively. Seven oligonucleotides primers generated 275 specific loci in the SC, 341 in the HR and 364 in the SP species, respectively. The oligonucleotides primer BION-23 generated 28 unique loci to each species in the SP species. Especially, the oligonucleotides primer BION-25 produced 7 unique loci to each species, which were identifying each species in the SP species. BION-17 distinguished 21 shared loci by the three ascidian species, major and/or minor fragments of sizes, which were identical in almost all of the samples. Based on the average bandsharing values of all samples, the similarity matrix ranged from 0.519 to 0.774 in the SC species, from 0.261 to 0.683 in the HR species and from 0.346 to 0.730 in the SP species. As regards average bandsharing value (BS) results, individuals from SC species ($0.661{\pm}0.081$) exhibited higher bandsharing values than did individuals from HR species ($0.555{\pm}0.074$) (P<0.05). The dendrogram obtained by the seven oligonucleotides primers indicates three genetic groups. In three ascidian species, the shortest genetic distance (0.071) exhibiting significant molecular difference was also between individual no. 20 and no. 21 within the SP species.
Objective : The purpose of this dissertation is to make a list of the phaeophyta growing naturally in the Korean coastal waters, and to carry out a survey on the current distribution status to investigate the phaeophyta which can be used as medicinal herbs. Methods : References and research papers about herbology published at home and abroad were examined. Results : The results of this study were as follows : A total of 63 genera and 145 species of phaeophyta was found in the Korean coastal waters among which 11 genera and 15 species(approximately 11%) were medicinal plants. Out of the 145 species of phaeophyta 27 species belonged to Sargassum, and out of the 15 species of medicinal plants 4 species belonged to Sargassum. Among the medicinal parts 11 species belonged to algae. Sixteen species had cold property, and 16 species had salty flavors. Thirteen species had the efficacy of liver meridian, and 15 species had the potency of YEONKYUN, which helps to remove hard clots generated in human body. No toxic drugs were detected. Conclusion : There were totaled to 63 genera and 145 species in Phaeophyta in Korea and among them medicinal plants are 11 genera, 15 species, some 11% in total. Thirteen species had the efficacy of liver meridian, and 15 species had the potency of YEONKYUN, which helps to remove hard clots generated in human body. No toxic drugs were detected.
Study was conducted to investigate tree diversity and its population and regeneration status in homegardens of upper Assam, Northeast India through field study by quadrat method. A total of 154 tree species have been recorded from 135 studied homegardens under 109 genera 53 families. Most of these species (79%) are indigenous to our country, while the rest (21%) arealiens (naturalized and cultivated exotics) by origin. Tree species richness per homegarden varies greatly in different homegardens and is ranged from 5 to 52 tree species with a mean of 22 ($SE{\pm}0.58$). A. malaccensis is the most dominant tree species in the studied homegardens contributed 34% of the total tree density of the documented trees. The tree density is much higher with 4,259 individuals $ha^{-1}$ but, basal area ($36.32m^2ha^{-1}$) is very less. Based on the number of individuals present, very rare species is accounted for 10%, rare species 39%, common species 19%, dominants 14% and predominant species 18% in the present study. The population density of 154 tree species is 4,259 (individuals $ha^{-1}$) for adults (>3.18 cm DBH), 5,902 (individuals $ha^{-1}$) for saplings and 38,164 (individuals $ha^{-1}$) for seedlings. The density of seedlings>saplings>adults represents good regeneration status of tree species in studied homegardens. The population structure study showed that about 8% tree species have good regeneration status, 9% have fair regeneration status, 48% have poor regeneration status and 34% tree species have no regeneration. Study suggests that research and development action is needed to stimulate regeneration of those tree species which having high importance value indices but showing poor or no regeneration. Based on present observation, it can be conclude that homegarden can emerge as an effective means for both economic well-being and biodiversity conservation in upper Assam, Northeast India.

Also there were new hybrids as well as new cultivars. 3. 25 species including Albizzia julibrissin were being cultivated in many arboretums and sold in many nurseries. Also there were new hybrids. 4. Ilex integra and Ilex rotunda were being cultivated in many arboretums and sold in many nurseries. There were no new cultivars, but there were new hybrids. 5. 44 species including Abies holophylla were being cultivated in many arboretums and sold in many nurseries. There were no new cultivars or hybrids. 6. Populus tremula var. davidiana was being cultivated in many arboretums. There were new cultivars of 'Erecta', 'Gigas', 'Pendula', but no new hybrids. They were not sold by any nurseries. 7. 41 species including Abies nephrolepsis were being cultivated in many arboretums. But they were not sold by any nurseries. They didn't have any new cultivars or hybrids. 8. Diospyros kaki 'Kyungsan Bansi', Elaeocarpus sylvestris var. ellipticus, and Pyrus serotina 'Dankae' were not being cultivated in arboretums in America but some nurseries were selling those species as well as new cultivars. 9. Only 3 species (Berchemia berchemiaefolia, Carpinus eximia, and Chionanthus retusus var. coreana which are native Korean plants) were not introduced in America or Canada.
Genomic DNAs were extracted from the muscle of twenty-one specimens of three eel species collected in Anguilla japonica (AJ), Muraenesox cinereus (MC) and Conger myriaster (CM) from the Yellow Sea, respectively. In the present study, 7 oligonucleotides primers generated 191 specific loci in the AJ species, 226 in the (MC) species and 181 in the CM species, respectively. The primer BION-02 generated the most loci (a total of 83), with an average of 11.86 in the AJ species. The specific loci generated by oligonucleotides primers exhibited inter-individual-specific characteristics, thus revealing DNA polymorphisms. With regard to average bandsharing value (BS) results, individuals from Conger myriaster species (0.808) exhibited higher bandsharing values than did individuals from Muraenesox cinereus species (0.729) (P<0.05). The longest genetic distance (0.430) displaying significant molecular difference was also between individual no. 01 within Anguilla japonica eel species and individual no. 04 within Anguilla japonica species. In this study, the dendrogram resulted from reliable seven oligonucleotides primers, indicating three genetic clusters composed of group I (ANGUILLA 01~ANGUILLA 07), group II (MURAENESOX 08~MURAENESOX 14) and group III (CONGER 15~CONGER 21). The existence of species differentiation and DNA polymorphisms among three eel species were detected by PCR analysis. As mentioned above, a dendrogram revealed close relationships between individual identities within three eel species. High levels of a significant genetic distance among three eel species showed this PCR approach is one of the most suitable tools for individuals and/or species biological DNA studies.
