Aerosol size distribution were determined in Seoul by Anderson sampler from October 1989 to September 1991 for the major ionic species(SO$_{4}$$^{2-}$, NO$_{3}$$^{-}$, Cl$^{-}$, Na$^{+}$, Na$^{+}$, K$^{+}$, Ca$^{2+}$ and Mg$^{2+}$) and TSP( Total Suspended Particles ). The seasonal variations in concentrations and size distribution have been investigated. The size distributions of TSP and each of ionic species were bimodal throughout the year. The size distribution of these ions were divided as follows; (1) fine- mode dominant for SO$_{4}$$^{2-}$ and N%'. (2) coarse- mode dominant for NO$_{3}$$^{-}$, Cl$^{-}$, Ca$^{2+}$ and Mg$^{2+}$. (3) both- mode dominant for TSP.

This study wascarried out to compare the medicinal effects of various Ganoderma species mycelial extracts. Among 6 Ganoderma species mycelial extracts by using 100% MeOH, G. species ASI-7150 showed the highest antioxidant effect. In nitric oxide (NO) production and ${\beta}$-hexosaminidase release inhibition assay, the treatment of G. lucidum ATCC64251 (Taiwan) mycelia extracts most effectively inhibited NO production in LPS-stimulated RAW264.7 cells and ${\beta}$-hexosaminidase release. In addition, the treatment of all 6 Ganoderma species mycelial extracts were not affect on RAW264.7 cell viability. Although this preliminary research has thrown up many questions in need of further investigation, it will serve as a base for further studies of medicinal effects of various Ganoderma species.
The purpose of this study was to isolate and identify wild yeasts from soil of Gyeongju city, and Haemadipsa rjukjuana of Gageodo Island, characterizing unrecorded yeast strains from Korea. The molecular analysis of the D1/D2 domain of 26S rDNA of yeast was performed using the Basic Local Alignment Search Tool (BLAST). No official report exists describing these three species: one species in the genus Candida, one species in the genus Debaryomyces, and one species in the genus Solicoccozyma. Candida saitoana YL9, Debaryomyces fabryi YL1, and Solicoccozyma terrea 20g9-1 are recorded for the first time from Korea. All three strains were oval shaped and polar binding, while positive for glucose, ᴅ-xylose, and ᴅ-cellobiose. Morphological, physiological, and biochemical properties are described in the species descriptions.
Sclerochilus Sars, 1866 is the most diverse genus of the family Bythocytheridae, one of the longest surviving groups of extant ostracods, and the oldest representative of the superfamily Cytheroidea. It has a worldwide distribution at various marine depths, and it includes three subgenera: Fascichilus Schornikov, 1981; Praesclerochilus Schornikov, 1981; and Sclerochilus Sars, 1866. We describe Sclerochilus(Praesclerochilus) jejuensis sp. nov. from Jeju Island, South Korea, raising the number of known Praesclerochilus species to 13. Although most species belonging to this subgenus have very similar carapace shape, the new species differs morphologically from its most similar congeners, S. (P.) mukaishimensis Okubo, 1977; S. (P.) pruniformis Schornikov, 1981; and S. (P.) ochotensis Schornikov, 1981, by the large ventral process on the hemipenis. So far, 29 Sclerochilus species have been reported from South Korea, only one of which was named, but for which no descriptive information was provided. Therefore, this is the first taxonomic report of a Sclerochilus species from South Korea.
In this study, we analyzed fish tolerance guilds in mainstems and tributaries of 65 streams and rivers arid their relations to water quality using dataset sampled from April to November, 2009. For the study, water quality parameters including biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), electric conductivity (EC), total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP), ammonia nitrogen ($NH_3$-N), nitrate nitrogen ($NO_3$-N) and phosphate phosphorus ($PO_4$-P) were analyzed in the laboratory and also tolerance ranges in 3 category fishes of sensitive, intermediate, and tolerant species with high abundance were analyzed. According to fish guild analysis, tolerant species was 58% of the total community and the proportion of omnivore species was 63% of the total, indicating a degradation of habitats and water quality. Water quality was shown typical longitudinal gradients from the headwater to the down-river; TN and TP increased toward the down-rivers except for the big point-source area and ionic contents, based on, electric conductivity showed same pattern. Tolerance guild analysis of 9 major species with high abundance indicated that sensitive groups had narrower tolerance range in the water quality than the groups of intermediate and tolerant species. In contrast, tolerant groups including Zacco platypus, Carassius auratus, and Opsarichthys uncirostris amurensis had wider tolerance ranges than the groups of sensitive and intermediate species. Thus, each group was evidently segregated from the tolerance levels. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) employed for the relations of water quality to fish species in each groups suggests that water quality had highest eigenvalues with fish species in the 1st axis of the PCA and nitrogen (TN, $NH_3$-N, $NO_3$-N) and phosphorus (TP) were key components differentiating three groups of sensitive, intermediate and tolerance guilds.
Nine new species of genus Ircinia (Demospongiae: Dictyoceratida: Irciniidae) from Jejudo Island, Korea are described. All of the new species are distinguished from the others reported species of Ircinia by the skeletal structure, especially massive fasciculate primary fibres. The characters of genus Ircinia have primary fibres cored with foreign debris and no cored secondary fibres. Primary fibres are not easy to distinguish from secondary fibres if they are not cored. Secondary web has perforated plate or meshed net. All new species have loosely arranged skeletal fibres network.
Three isolates belonging to the ascomycetous genus Zygotorulaspora were obtained from the fruits of Cornus officinalis and Smilax china, and flowers of Dendranthema zawadskii var. latilobum in Gongju-si, Korea. Phylogenetic Analyses of the LSU D1/D2 domain and ITS region sequences supported the recognition of two new species: Zygotorulaspora cornina sp. nov. (type strain NIBRFGC000500475 = KACC93346PPP) and Zygotorulaspora smilacis sp. nov. (type strain NIBRFGC000500476 = KACC93347PPP). The two novel species revealed no growth on D-Galactose, unlike the other six species in the genus Zygotorulaspora. They are distinguished from each other by their phylogenetic differences and phenotypic characteristics such as assimilation of xylitol, 5-keto-D-gluconate, and ethanol. All species in the genus Zygotorulaspora including the two novel species have phenotypic traits of genus Zygotorulaspora: asci are persistent, sucrose and raffinose are assimilated, and m-inositol is not required for growth, and they are mainly associated with plants.
One of the small genera of the tribe Atrophini (subfamily Banchinae), the genus Amphirhachis, has been reported seven species in the world. Among them, four species (Amphirhachis fasciata, A. nigripalpis, A. rubriventris and A. tertia) from Oriental region, and four species(Amphirhachis fujiei, A. miyabi, A. nigra and A. tertia) from Eastern Palaearctic region. Unfortunately, there are no records in South Korea yet. This genus is easily distinguished from other genera of Atrophini following: clypeus strongly convex near side; posterior transverse carina of propodeum represented by a weak or faint vertical ridge at apex on each side; ovipositor sheath shorter than metasoma. In this study, the genus Amphirhachis is recorded for the first time with a newly recorded species (Amphirhachis tertia) from South Korea. New data on the taxonomy and distribution of Amphirhachis tertia are given. We also provide diagnosis and digital images of a newly recorded genus and species.

Fisheries' biological resources were considered public resources before the 1990s. Every country could access and use these resources without regulation. However, the United Nations adopted the Convention on Biological Diversity and the privileges and rights to these resources were attributed to countries. This research starts with the research background and social and academic value of "The Jasan Eobo (or Report on Marine Organisms in the Coastal Waters near Heuksan Island)" by Jeong Yak-Jeon, who pioneered the new field of Fisheries Science and Marine Biology in Korea in the early 1800s. We also searched for recent results from the Marine Bio-Diversity Research Activities of the Korean National Council for Conservation of Nature (KNCCN) and the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (MOMAF). KNCCN reported that marine bio-diversity comprised approximately 6,500 species in 1996, and the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries reported there were about 10,000 species in 2007. Among these marine species, plankton account for about 25%, seaweeds 11%, invertebrates 52%, and vertebrates 12% in Korean Coastal Areas. The Ministry for Food, Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries (MIFAFF) enacted a law for Agriculture and Fisheries Resources Management in 2012; this law includes the preservation of marine ecosystems, the conservation of wetlands and the preservation of fisheries resources, and describes the boundary of taxonomy for new species and unknown species that could be identified in the near future. To follow the new regulation for Access to General Resources and Benefit-Sharing, this research suggests (1) the importance of taxonomy for new species and unknown species as a goal of "No Name = No Information", (2) integrated research on bio-diversity, species distributions and the abundance of fisheries resources, both in local areas and in Korean Coastal Areas, and (3) the observance of international regulations or agreements for benefit-sharing without additional damage in the future.
In the present study, we have examined the crossability of four species in the A. jaluense complex to provide additional information on their delimitation and levels of differentiation. Crosses between diploid A. chiisanense and the tetraploid species including A. jaluense s. str., A. triphyllum, and A. pseudoproliferum yielded no fruit- or seed-set, indicating that the former species is reproductively completely isolated from the latter three species. In interspecific crosses between the tetraploid species, combinations involving A. jaluense s. str. resulted in much reduced fruit- and seed-set, indicating that A. jaluense s. str. is more or less reproductively isolated from the other tetraploid species. However, crossing data revealed the absence of reproductive isolation between A. triphyllum and A. pseudoproliferum These results strongly support the relationships that have been previously suggested for the A. jaluense complex on the basis of morphology, chromosome number, and flavonoid chemistry.
