Processing Scrambled Wh-Constructions in Head-Final Languages: Dependency Resolution and Feature Checking

  • This paper aims at exploring the processing mechanism of filler-gap dependency resolution and feature checking in Korean wh-constructions. Based on their findings on Japanese sentence processing, Aoshima et al. (2004) have argued that the parser posits a gap in the embedded clause in head-final languages, unlike in head-initial languages, where the parser posits a gap in the matrix clause. In order to verify their findings in the Korean context, and to further explore the mechanisms involved in processing Korean wh-constructions, the present study replicated the study done by Aoshima et al., with some modifications of problematic areas in their original design. Sixty-four Korean native speakers were presented Korean sentences containing a wh-phrase in four conditions, with word order and complementizer type as the two main factors. The participants read sentences segment-by-segment, and the reading times at each segment were measured. The reading time analysis showed that there was no such slowdown at the embedded verb in the scrambled conditions as observed in Aoshima et al. Instead, there was a clear indication of the wh-feature checking process in terms of a major slowdown at the relevant region.

광학 전산화단층촬영 스캐너 사용을 위한 중합체 겔과 BANGTM 겔 선량계의 특성 비교 (Comparison of Polymer and BANGTM Gel Dosimeters to Use a Optical Computed Tomography Scanner)

  • The purpose of this study was to compare the basic radiological characteristics of in-house polymer gel and commercially-available gel (BANGTM) gel dosimeters with a spectro-photometer to use a optical computed tomography (CT) scanner. We investigated the radiological characteristics including dose linearity, absorbance spectrum, dose rate dependency and inter-and intra-reproducibility at wavelengths of 590, 600 and 630 nm. The optimal dose linearities of two gel dosimeters showed R2 value of 0.939 and 0.948 at wavelengths of 590 nm and 600 nm, respectively. For two polymer gel dosimeters, there is no peak sensitivity within the range of all wavelengths in absorbance spectrum. For in-house gel dosimeter, the dose rate dependency were within 5% for all wavelengths except for the dose rate of 100 MU/min. For BANGTM gel dosimeter, the dose rate dependency showed an error range of ±5% for all wavelengths. The inter-and intra-reproducibility of two gel dosimeters were within the range of 2.5%. We have confirmed that the two gel dosimeters was appropriate for use with a optical CT scanner.

  • Automatic mesh generation procedures applied to industrial now problems lead to complex mesh topologies where usually no special considerations to mesh resolution are taken. In the present study a fast and flexible solution algorithm in combination with generalized higher order discretization schemes is presented and its application to intake port calculation is demonstrated.

EFFECTS OF SOURCE POSITION ON THE DH-TYPE II CME PROPERTIES

  • The properties of SOHO/LASCO CMEs are subjected to projection effects. Their dependence on the source position is important to be studied. Our main aim is to study the dependence of CME properties on helio-longitude and latitude using the CMEs associated with type IIs observed by Wind/WAVES spacecraft (Deca-hecta metric type IIs - DH type IIs). These CMEs were identified as a separate population of geo-effective CMEs. We considered the CMEs associated with the Wind/WAVE type IIs observed during the period January 1997 - December 2005. The source locations of these CMEs were identified using their associated GOES X-ray flares and listed online. Using their locations and the cataloged properties of CMEs, we carried out a study on the dependence of CME properties on source location. We studied the above for three groups of CMEs: (i) all CMEs, (ii) halo and non-halo CMEs, and (iii) limb and non-limb CMEs. Major results from this study can be summarized as follows. (i) There is a clear dependence of speed on both the longitude and latitude; while there is an increasing trend with respect to longitude, it is opposite in the case of latitude. Our investigations show that the longitudinal dependence is caused by the projection effect and the latitudinal effect by the solar cycle effect. (ii) In the case of width, the disc centered events are observed with more width than those occurred at higher longitudes, and this result seems to be the same for latitude. (iii) The dependency of speed is confirmed on the angular distance between the sun-center and source location determined using both the longitude and latitude. (iv) There is no dependency found in the case of acceleration. (v) Among all the three groups of CMEs, the speeds of halo CMEs show more dependency on longitude. The speed of non-halo and non-limb CMEs show more dependency on latitude. The above results may be taken into account in correcting the projection effects of geo-effective CMEs.

남자 대학생을 위한 금연프로그램의 효과 - 니코틴 의존도와 자기효능감을 중심으로 - (Effects of Smoking Cessation Program for Male University Students: Perceived Nicotine Dependency and Self-efficacy)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of 8 weeks smoking cessation program(SCP) developed by researchers. Method: One group pretest-posttest design was used in this study. The subjects were 88 male university students who consented to participate in the 8 weeks SCP. The SCP in this study consisted of a stop-smoking class, e-mail, SMS(short message service), cellular phone, internet cafe, displayed panel, and patch or acupuncture for quitting smoking. Korean version of questionnaire for nicotine dependency by Ahn et al.(2002), the smoking self-efficacy scale translated by Choi(1999) and subjects' opinion about the SCP were measured. The data were analyzed by using frequency, Chi-Square test, paired t-test and repeated measures ANOVA with SPSS WIN 10.1 Program. Results: 1) The rate of quitting smoking was 31.8% after 8 weeks SCP. 2) There was no significant decrease in the nicotine dependency score among smoking subjects after SCP. 3) There was a significant increase in self-efficacy after SCP. The mean score of self -efficacy in the quitting smoking group increased significantly, but did not significantly change in the smoking group. 4) The stop-smoking class was the most helpful among contents of the SCP. Contents of the SCP except for internet cafe were useful for quitting smoking in this study. Conclusion: The above results indicated that the 8 weeks SCP would be a helpful intervention to quit smoking for male university students.

Micro- and Macro-Level Factors Determining Financial Performance of UAE Insurance Companies

  • The research aims to analyze the firm-specific and macroeconomic factors that affect insurance company's financial performance. The research explores the variables that influence the financial performance of the United Arab Emirates (UAE)' insurance companies. The analysis for determining financial performance considers the following variables: the firm's age, retention ratio, capital adequacy, underwriting risk/loss ratio, financial-leverage, reinsurance dependency, and macro-economic factors such as GDP per capita, inflation rate considered as independent factors. The return-on-asset (ROA) is the key measuring indicator; it is regarded as the dependent variable for financial performance measures. The research focuses on secondary information obtained from insurance companies' financial statements. The researcher targeted 18 insurance companies listed on the UAE stock exchanges for study purposes. The research examines the overall factors that influence the financial performance of an insurance company. For analysis of data, software package of social sciences (SPSS version 20) is used. The studies used correlation and multiple linear regression analysis to determine financial performance and their effects. The analysis suggests that there are important and constructive relationships between the size, capital adequacy, and reinsurance dependency, while loss ratio, retention ratio, and financial leverage indicate a major negative relationship. And there's no link between GDP per capita and inflation.

생애전환기 건강진단 노인 수검자의 독감 백신 접종 영향 요인 (The Influencing Factors of Influenza Vaccination in the Elderly Participating in Lifetime Transitional Health Examination)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the influencing factors of influenza vaccination in the elderly participating in lifetime transitional health examination. Methods: This study was a secondary analysis of data collected from lifetime transitional health examination (for 66-year-old people) conducted by the National Health Insurance Corporation (NHIC) from January 1 to December 31, 2008. Questionnaires were received from NHIC to obtain information regarding gender, chronic diseases, health-related behaviors, and ADL. A total of 255,333 participants who responded all the questions in the questionnaire were included in the analysis. Collected data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, ${\chi}^2$ test, and multiple logistic regression. Results: The influenza vaccine coverage rate in 66-year-old people was 66.1%. The influenza vaccine coverage rate was higher in female elders and those with hypertension, diabetes, heart disease or past smoking, and lower in those with stroke, current smoking, drinking, no-exercise or ADL-dependency. Conclusion: Strategies for improving the influenza vaccination coverage rate in the elderly are needed. The strategies should give priority to the elderly with current smoking, drinking, and no-exercise, and home visiting programs are needed for the elderly with stroke and ADL-dependency.

도시지역과 청정지역에서의 대기 중 PAN(PeroxyAcetyl Nitrate) 측정 (Measurements of Peroxyacetyl Nitrates at an Urban and a Rural Site in Korea)

  • Although PAN has ong been considered to belong to one of the most characteristic photooxidants, its concentra-tions have rarely been measured in a systematic manner in Korea. The first in-situ Measurements of PAN were made in concert with simultaneous analysis of NO, NO$_2$, $O_3$ and UV-Visible radiation intensity from Seoul and dong-Hae during Spring and early Summer of 1999. The aim of our study was to evaluate the behavior of photo-chemical species in a highly polluted urban air and a relative clean one. PAN were determined using a semi-auto-mated gas chromatograph equipped with an electron captured detection system. Calibration of the PAN was done by synthesizing liquid standards using a strong acid nitration of the corresponding peracid. The PAN concentra-tions were found in the range of a few ppbv in the urban air ad persistently less than a ppbv in the clean rural airs. Diurnal variations of PAN and $O_3$ were also observed consistently during the experiment with maxima occurring during the late daylight hours. While the positive dependency of $O_3$ production and PAN concentrations were ob-served in most occasion, the dependency became deviated significantly under changes in air masses.

구문 의존 경로에 기반한 단백질의 세포 내 위치 인식 (Detection of Protein Subcellular Localization based on Syntactic Dependency Paths)

  • 단백질의 세포 내 위치를 인식하는 것은 생물학 현상의 기술에 있어서 필수적이다. 생물학 문서의 양이 늘어남에 따라, 단백질의 세포 내 위치 정보를 문서 내용으로부터 얻기 위한 연구들이 많이 이루어졌다. 기존의 논문들은 문장의 구문 정보를 이용하여 정보를 얻고자 하였으며, 언어학적 정보가 단백질의 세포 내 위치를 인식하는 데 유용하다고 주장하고 있다. 그러나, 이전의 시스템들은 구문 정보를 얻기 위해 부분 구문분석기만을 사용하였고 재현율이 좋지 못했다. 그러므로 단백질의 세포 내 위치 정보를 얻기 위해 전체 구문분석기를 사용할 필요가 있다. 또한, 더 많은 언어학적 정보를 위해 의미 정보 또한 사용이 가능하다. 단백질의 세포 내 위치 정보를 인식하는 성능을 향상시키기 위하여, 본 논문은 전체 구문분석기와 어휘망(WordNet)을 기반으로 한 방법을 제안한다. 첫 번째 단계에서, 각 단백질 단어로부터 그 단백질의 위치후보에까지 이르는 구문 의존 경로를 구축한다. 두 번째 단계에서, 구문의존 경로의 루트 정보를 추출한다. 마지막으로, 단백질 부분트리와 위치 부분트리의 구문-의미 패턴을 추출한다. 구문 의존 경로의 루트와 부분트리로부터 구문태그와 구문방향을 구문 정보로서 추출하고, 각 노드 단어의 의미태그를 의미 정보로서 추출한다. 의미태그로는 어휘망의 동의어 집합(synset)을 사용한다. 학습데이터에서 추출한 루트 정보와 부분트리의 구문-의미 패턴에 따라서, 실험데이터에서 (단백질, 위치) 쌍들을 추출했다. 어떤 생물학적 지식 없이, 본 논문의 방법은 메드라인(Medline) 요약 데이터를 사용한 실험 결과에서 학습데이터에 대해 74.53%의 조화평균(F-measure), 실험데이터에 대해서는 58.90%의 조화평균을 보였다. 이 실험은 기존의 방법들보다 12-25%의 성능향상을 보였다.

거래전략에 따른 송전손실배분의 경로의존성에 관한 연구 (Path-dependency of Transmission Loss Allocation using Transaction Strategy)

  • This paper presents a buswise transmission loss allocation algorithm utilizing the transaction strategy. We prove that whatever calculated by any transaction strategy, the total of the allocated transmission losses of each bus, including no-load loss allocation, almost equals the total loss of AC power flow algorithm and the loss is perfectly slackbus-independent. In this paper, the allocated transmission losses of each bus is calculated by the method of integrating loss sensitivities using by the load level parameter ${\lambda}$. The performance of the proposed algorithm is evaluated by the case studies carried out on the WSCC 9-bus and IEEE 14-bus systems.
