In this study, we have analyzed the removal efficiencies of $SO_2$ and $SO_2/NO$ by the pulsed corona discharge process and investigated the effects of several process variables on those removal efficiencies systematically. The effects of process variables such as applied voltage, pulse frequency, residence time, and initial concentrations of reactants (NO, $SO_2$, $NH_3$, $H_2O$, and $O_2$) on the removal efficiency were analyzed. As the applied voltage, the pulse frequency or the residence time increases or as the $O_2$ or the $H_2O$ or the $NH_3$ concentration in the inlet feed gas stream increases, the $SO_2$ removal efficiencies and the simultaneous removal efficiencies of $SO_2/NO$ also increase. These experimental results can be used as a basis to design the pulsed corona discharge process to remove $NO_x$ and $SO_x$.

The feasibility of using bacterial cultures with the ultimate aim for the marine environmental clean-up was explored. The present study reports on the bacterial elimination of nitrogens and phosphorus by strains CK-10 and CK-13 isolated from shrimp farming pond. The strains were identified as genus Bacillus on the basis of BIOLOG test, and designated as Bacillus sp. CK-10 and Bacillus sp. CK-13, respectively. Removal of nitrogens $(NH_4^+,\;NO_2^-,\;or\;NO_3^-)$ or phosphorus $(PO_4^{-3})$ as single N or P source was studied with single cultures under aerobic conditions. Complete elimination of all nitrogens in the concentration range of $100-400{\mu}M$ was achieved in single cultures as well as co-cultures within the given incubation period. Similar results were obtained from the test cultures containing $125-599{\mu}M\;PO_4^{3-}$. Simultaneous removal of all N/P was monitored in the co-cultures. As the results, $400{\mu}M\;NH_4^+\;and\;NO_2^-$ were eliminated within 12hrs and $400{\mu}M\;NO_3^-\;and\;500{\mu}M\;PO_4^{-3}$ were completely disappeared within 36 hrs from the media. The work demonstrated that co-cultures improved the concurrent removal of N/P from the media.
Nitrate removal rate in three wetland cells was examined. The acreage of each cell was 150 $m^2$. They were a part of a stream water treatment demonstration system which was composed of two ponds and six wetland cells. Earth works far the pond-wetland system were finished from April 2000 to May 2000 and reeds were planted in the three cells in May 2001. Waters of Sinyang Stream flowing into Kohung Esturiane Lake located southern coastal area of Korean Peninsula were pumped into a primary pont Effluents from a secondary pond were funneled into the three cells. Volumes and water quality of inflow and outflow were analyzed from July 2001 through December 2001. Inflow and outflow averaged 20 $m^3/d$ and 19.3 $m^3/d$, respectively. Hydraulic retention time was 1.5 days. Average influent and effluent nitrate concentration was 2.30 mg/L, 1.75 mg/L, respectively. Nitrate removal rate in the three cells averaged 80.9 $mg/m^2/day$. Seasonal changes of nitrate retention rates were closely related to those of wetland temperatures. Full growth of reeds within a few years can develope litter-soil substrates beneficial to the denitrification of nitrate, which may lead to increases of the nitrate retention rates.

The SNCR-SCR (selective non-catalytic reduction-selective catalytic reduction) hybrid system is an economical NOx removal system. In this study, the effect of the operating parameters of the SNCR-SCR hybrid system on NOx removal efficiency was investigated. When the SNCR reactor was operated at a temperature lower than the optimum temperature ($900{\sim}950^{\circ}C$), an additional NO removal is obtained basesd on the utilization of $NH_3$ slip. On the other hand, the SNCR reactor operated above the temperature resulted in no additional NO removal of SCR due to decomposition of $NH_3$. Therefore, the SNCR process should be operated at optimum temperature to obtain high NO removal efficiency and low $NH_3$ slip. Thus, it is important to adjust NSR (normalized stoichiometric ratio) so that $SR_{RES}$ can be maintained at an appropriate level.

This study was performed under four operational conditions for nitrogen removal in metal finishing wastewater. The conditions include electrode gap, reducing agent, the recycling of treated wastewater in 1st step and the simultaneous treatment of nitrate and other materials. Result showed that the removal efficiency of $NO_3{^-}-N$ was highest at the electrode gap of 10 mm. As the electrode gap was shorter than 10 mm, the removal efficiency of $NO_3{^-}-N$ decreased due to increasing in concentration polarization on electrode. And, in case that the electrode gap was longer than 10 mm, the removal efficiency of $NO_3{^-}-N$ increased with an increase in energy consumption. Because hydrogen ions are consumed when nitrate is reduced, reducing reaction of nitrate was effected more in acid solution. As 1.2 excess amount of zinc was injected, the removal efficiency of $NO_3{^-}-N$ increased due to increasing in amount of reaction with nitrate. As the effluent from 1st step in the reactor was recycled into the 1st step, the removal efficiency of $NO_3{^-}-N$ increased. Because the zinc were detached from the cathode and concentration-polarization was decreased due to formation of turbulence in the reactor. The presence of $NH_4{^+}-N$ did not affect the removal efficiency of $NO_3{^-}-N$ but the addition of heavy metal decreased the removal efficiency of $NO_3{^-}-N$. As chlorine is enough in wastewater, the simultaneous treatment of nitrate and ammonia nitrogen may be possible. The problem that heavy metal decrease the removal efficiency of $NO_3{^-}-N$ may be solved by increasing current density or using front step of electrochemical process for heavy metal removal.
This study was intended to evaluate the removal efficiency of nutrients in effluents of wastewater using microalgae. Microalgae used in the culture experiment collected in stream and reservoir located in Gyeongsangbuk-do. Dominant species in prior-culture tank were Monoraphidium contortum, Scenedesmus acutus, Coelastrum microporum and Chlorella sp. Dominant species in synthetic wastewater culture under the 4000 Lux and 8000 Lux were Chlorella sp. and Scenedesmus obliquus. The removal efficiency of $NO_3-N$ under the 4000 Lux and 8000 Lux were 27.2%~88.1% and 63.0%~83.6% respectively. The removal efficiency of $PO_4-P$ under the 4000 Lux and 8000 Lux showed above 93%. Removal efficiency of nutrients of $1.0{\times}10^6cells\;mL^{-1}$ inoculation concentration was more higher than that of nutrients of $1.0{\times}10^5cells\;mL^{-1}$ and $1.0{\times}10^7cells\;mL^{-1}$ inoculation concentration. Microalgae cultured in synthetic wastewater removed 94.9% of TN and 90.0% of TP. The removal rate of TN and TP in synthetic wastewater were $1.961mg\;L^{-1}\;day^{-1}$ and $0.200mg\;L^{-1}\;day^{-1}$ respectively. Nutrient removal efficiency of microalgae according to kinds of wastewater showed the highest in the private sewage.

It was investigated to develop the technology for simultaneous removal of $SO_2/NO$ in flue gas using liquid homogeneous catalyst. Test was carried out using a bench scale and a pilot scale experiment. The investigation led to the following results: 1) Removal efficiency of $SO_2$ gas showed good results regardless of operating condition. Removal efficiency of NO gas, however, proportionally increased with higher packing height, lower concentration and larger injection rate of catalyst 2) The optimum design parameters for simultaneous removal of $SO_2/NO$ gas using Fe(II)-EDTA catalyst were as follow: HTU(height of transfer unit) = 0.5 m, liquid gas ratio = 20 $L/m^3$, NTU (number of transfer unit) = 3 stages, cross dimension of scrubber=0.025 $m^2$ 3) The removal efficiencies of $SO_2$ and NO were 95% and 81%, repletely. 4) The high HTU is advantageous on removal of the NO, but the excessive HTU diminishes operating efficiency. Consequently, it is important to decide the HTU of optimum.

In combustion facilities, the nitrogen and sulfur in fossil fuels react with oxygen to generate air pollutants such as nitrogen oxides (NOX) and sulfur oxides (SOX), which are harmful to the human body and cause environmental pollution. There are regulations worldwide to reduce NOX and SOX, and various technologies are being applied to meet these regulations. There are commercialized methods to reduce NOX and SOX emissions such as selective catalytic reduction (SCR), selective non-catalytic reduction (SNCR) and wet flue gas desulfurization (WFGD), but due to the disadvantages of these methods, many studies have been conducted to simultaneously remove NOX and SOX. However, even in the NOX and SOX simultaneous removal methods, there are problems with wastewater generation due to oxidants and absorbents, costs incurred due to the use of catalysts and electrolysis to activate specific oxidants, and the harmfulness of gas oxidants themselves. Therefore, in this research, microbubbles generated in a high-pressure disperser and reducing agents were used to reduce costs and facilitate wastewater treatment in order to compensate for the shortcomings of the NOX, SOX simultaneous treatment method. It was confirmed through image processing and ESR (electron spin resonance) analysis that the disperser generates real microbubbles. NOX and SOX removal tests according to temperature were also conducted using only microbubbles. In addition, the removal efficiencies of NOX and SOX are about 75% and 99% using a reducing agent and microbubbles to reduce wastewater. When a small amount of oxidizing agent was added to this microbubble system, both NOX and SOX removal rates achieved 99% or more. Based on these findings, it is expected that this suggested method will contribute to solving the cost and environmental problems associated with the wet oxidation removal method.
