This study investigates the prediction of soil chemical properties (organic matter (OM), pH, Ca, Mg, K, Na, total acidity, cation exchange capacity (CEC)) on 688 Korean soil samples using the visible-near infrared reflectance (VIS-NIR) spectroscopy. Reflectance from the visible to near-infrared spectrum (350 to 2500 nm) was acquired using the ASD Field Spec Pro. A total of 688 soil samples from 168 soil profiles were collected from 2009 to 2011. The spectra were resampled to 10 nm spacing and converted to the 1st derivative of absorbance (log (1/R)), which was used for predicting soil chemical properties. Principal components analysis (PCA), partial least squares regression (PLSR) and regression rules model (Cubist) were applied to predict soil chemical properties. The regression rules model (Cubist) showed the best results among these, with lower error on the calibration data. For quantitatively determining OM, total acidity, CEC, a VIS-NIR spectroscopy could be used as a routine method if the estimation quality is more improved.
Spectral characteristics depending on soil constituents and their proportion in a soil were firstly studied for monitoring of soil contamination using hyperspectral remote sensing. The reflectance spectra of heavy metals in soils were investigated in the VIS-NIR-SWIR regions (400-2500 nm) to observe spectral variation as a function of constituents and concentrations. Commercial kaolinite soils mixed with lead, copper, arsenic, and cadmium were used as synthetic soil samples for spectral measurement. In case of copper, relatively spectrally active regions was observed with some band shift whereas other heavy metals had only simple spectral variations expected to be related to the sorption phase and the amount of metal onto kaolinite. The reflectance spectrum of each metal on kaolinite could be identified in VIS-NIR region.

The transesterification of molten ethylene/vinylacetate (EVA) copolymers by octanol as a reagent and sodium methoxide as a catalyst in an extruder has been monitored by on-line near infrared (NIR) spectroscopy. A total of 60 NIR spectra were acquired for 37 minutes with the last spectrum recorded 31 minutes after the addition of octanol and catalyst was stopped. The experimental spectra show strong baseline fluctuations which are corrected for by multiplicative scatter correction (MSC). The chemometric methods of orthogonal projection approach (OPA) and multivariate curve resolution (MCR) were used to resolve the spectra and to derive concentration profiles of the species. The detailed analysis reveals the absence of completely pure variables that leads to small errors in the calculation of pure spectra. The initial estimation of a concentration that is necessary as an input parameter for MCR also presents a non-trivial task. We obtained results that were not ideal but applicable for practical concentration control. They enable a fast monitoring of the process in real-time and resolve the spectra of the EVA copolymer and the ethylene/vinyl alcohol (EVAL) copolymer to be very close to the reference spectra. The chemometric methods used and the decomposed spectra are discussed in detail.

The dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC) is a device for the conversion of visible light into electricity, based on the sensitization of wide bandgap semiconductors. The performance of the cell mainly depends on a dye used as sensitizer. The absorption spectrum of the dye and the anchorage of the dye to the surface of TiO2 are important parameters determining the efficiency of the cell. Generally, transition metal coordination compounds(ruthenium polypyridyl complexes) are used as the effective sensitizers, due to their intense charge-transfer absorption in the whole visible range and highly efficient metal-to ligand charge transfer. However, ruthenium polypyridyl complexes contain a heavy metal, which is undesirable from point of view of the environmental aspects. Moreover, the process to synthesize the complexes is complicated and costly. Alternatively, organic dyes can be used for the same purpose with an acceptable efficiency. The advantages of organic dyes include their availability and low cost. We designed and synthesized a series of organic sensitizers containing long wavelength absorption-chromophores for the dye sensitized solar cell. The DSSC composed of Blue-chromophores for the sensitization absorbed long wavelength region which is different also applied into the dye-cocktail (mixing) system. The photovoltaic property of DSSCs organic long wavelength absorption-chromophores were measured and evaluated by comparison with that of individual chromophores.
About 50% of Active Galactic Nuclei(AGNs) are found to be red and dust-obscured. They are believed to be in an early dusty stage of AGNs evolution or affected by dust torus in the direction of line of sight. However, optical spectrum is affected by dust extinction, making it difficult to study their properties, such as FWHM and luminosity. In order to reveal the mass of central Black Hole(BH) in red AGN, we establish a new BH mass estimator for typical type1 AGNs using Near InfraRed(NIR) hydrogen line($P_{\alpha}$ and $P_{\beta}$), since these lines are at longer wavelength, less affected by dust extinction than optical hydrogen lines, such as $H_{\alpha}$ and $H_{\alpha}$. To derive the new empirical formula, we use a sample of well-known 36 AGN with a wide BH mass range of $10^6-10^9\;M_{\odot}$, where $M_{BH}s$ are estimated by reverberation mapping method and single epoch method. The $P_{\alpha}/P_{\beta}$ luminosities and FWHMs are derived by analyzing IRTF NIR spectra or taken from literature values. We show that luminosities and FWHMs of these lines correlate well with those of Balmer lines. Suggesting that Paschen and Balmer broad lines are originated from same region. Finally, we present the new $M_{BH}$ formula that are based on $P_{\alpha}/P_{\beta}$ luminosity and FWHM. We hope that our result will be used for investigating red AGNs.

We investigated characteristics of meat quality using by spectroscopic methods in visible region. Characteristics of beef muscle quality was measured by using spectrum analysis. We take the 3 samples of meat, and each sample has 3 measuring point. Also each measured samples has alternate thawing time(the state of frozen meat, thawing 20 minute and thawing 40 minute in the room temperature). As a results of experiments, measured intensity has changed by distributions of Myoglobin in meat muscles. And we can distinction the and characteristics of meat quality by distributions of lean meat and fat.

Single crystals of lithium potassium phthalate (LiKP) were successfully grown from aqueous solution by solvent evaporation technique. The grown crystals were characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction. The lithium potassium phthalate $C_{16}\;H_{12}\;K\;Li_3\;O_{11}$ belongs to triclinic system with the following unit-cell dimensions at 298(2) K;$a=7.405(5){\AA}$;$b=9.878(5){\AA}$;$c=13.396(5){\AA}$;${\alpha}=71.778(5)^{\circ}$;${\beta}=87.300(5)^{\circ}$;${\gamma}=85.405(5)^{\circ}$; having a space group P1. Mass spectrometric analysis provides the molecular weight of the compound and possible ways of fragmentations occurs in the compound. Thermal stability of the crystal was also studied by both simultaneous TGA/DTA analyses. The UV-Vis-NIR spectrum shows a good transparency in the whole of Visible and as well as in the near IR range. Third order nonlinear optical studies have also been studied by Z-scan technique. Nonlinear absorption and nonlinear refractive index were found out and the third order bulk susceptibility of compound was also estimated. The results have been discussed in detail.
Recently we showed the prototype portable device for the determination of human skin moisture by using near infrared spectroscopy. In order to optimize the acquiring condition of NIR spectrum of skin and control the target information of water depending the site such as epidermis and dermis, skin depth profiling was investigated changing the distance between illuminations and receiving of radiation in the terminal of fiber probe. The colleted light information could be controlled by changing the distance of the fiber optic probes. It was confirmed that the longer distance we used, the deeper site from the skin surface we could get information from in this study. Four kinds of probes with distances such as 0.03 mm, 0.1 mm, 0.5 mm, and 1.0 mm were used. In addition, the gap size from 0.3 mm to 3.0 mm was studied to control the intensity of water absorbance effectively and to avoid saturation of water absorption. We also investigated the reference materials depending the reflectance ratio for water absorption not to be saturated because of the strong absorptivity of water. Furthermore, spectroscopic information regarding free water and bound water around 1850 nm was investigated by using the different distance of fiber optic probes. This study would be great help to control the spectroscopic information of water to be measured depending the site where water exists.

Although cherry tomato is one of major vegetables consumed in fresh vegetable market, the quality grading method is mostly dependant on size measurement using drum shape sorting machines. Using Visible/Near-infrared spectroscopy, apparatus to be able to acquire transmittance spectrum data was made and used to estimate firmness, sugar content, and acidity of cherry tomatoes grown at hydroponic and soil culture. Partial least square (PLS) models were performed to predict firmness, sugar content, and acidity for the acquired transmittance spectra. To enhance accuracy of the PLS models, several preprocessing methods were carried out, such as normalization, multiplicative scatter correction (MSC), standard normal variate (SNV), and derivatives, etc. The coefficient of determination ($R^2_p$) and standard error of prediction (SEP) for the prediction of firmness, sugar, and acidity of cherry tomatoes from green to red ripening stages were 0.859 and 1.899 kgf, with a preprocessing of normalization, 0.790 and $0.434^{\circ}Brix$ with a preprocessing of the 1st derivative of Savitzky Golay, and 0.518 and 0.229% with a preprocessing normalization, respectively.

This study was carried out to investigate spectral characterisistics and chlorophyll contents of Pinus koraiensis needles in Gwangju-gun, Kyunggi-do. In spectrum analysis by each age, needle showed difference on 700∼1,100 nm(NIR : near infrared ray). Light reflexibility keeps constant between 1st year needle and 3rd year needle, current year needle's value was higher than others and that was higher for 400∼500 nm and 600∼700 nm at 550 nm. Transmission to needle's age showed the highest result in current year needle. It showed in order of current, 1st, 2nd and 3rd year needle at 550 nm and 750 nm. Especially, current year needles of Pinus koraiensis showed a tendency to change transmission coefficient in NIR. The result of transmission coefficient measurement by each position of slope showed in order of middle slope, upper slope and lower slope. But the gathered needle in middle slope made marked change at NIR. Chlorophyll a content of the upper slope's needles was higher than other 4 positions but a component ratio was lower. In needle of the oppressed tree, Chlorophyll a content was rather low than others. Chlorophyll a content by slope positions, the upper slope's needle showed a highest value(4.48 mg/g) and lower slope was lowest value(1.35 mg/g). Chlorophyll b content also showed a similar tendency to chlorophyll a and chlorophyll(a+b) contents.
