  • In this study, portable near infrared (NIR) system was newly integrated with a photodiode array detector, which has no moving parts and this system has been successfully applied for evaluation of human skin moisture. The good correlation between NIR absorbance and absolute water content of separated hairless mouse skin was, in vitro, showed depending on the water content (7.42-84.94%) using this portable NIR system. Partial least squares (PLS) regression was used for the calibration with the 1100-1650 nm wavelength range. For the practical use for the evaluation of human skin based on moisture, PLS model for human skin moisture was, in vivo, developed using the portable NIR system based on the relative water content values of stratum corneum from the conventional capacitance method. The PLS model showed a good correlation. This study indicated that the portable NIR system could be a powerful tool for human skin moisture, which may be much more stable to environmental conditions such as temperature and humidity, compared to conventional methods. Furthermore, in order to confirm the performance of newly integrated portable NIR system, scanning type conventional NIR spectrometer was used in the same experiments and the results were compared.

  • IGRINS (Immersion GRating INfrared Spectrometer) will provide the spectra with high-resolution and an instantaneous spectral coverage of H and K band in NIR region. Therefore, it is expected that the wide coverage of wavelength would make a production of an extensive NIR high-resolution spectra of standard stars as a prior program of IGRINS. As a counter part of these NIR spectra, we have planned to obtain the high-resolution spectra of those standard stars in optical band. These optical high-resolution spectra would give us an opportunity to produce the library of high-resolution stellar spectra covering from optical to NIR band, and to confirm the method to determine the stellar parameters and chemical abundances from the NIR high-resolution spectra. Before using the NIR high-resolution spectra, we have tested the method to determine the stellar parameters by comparing between the observed spectra and the synthetic spectra in optical band. In order to make the synthetic spectra, we have used the Kurucz ATLAS9 model grids and the SYNTH code described by Fiorella Castelli (http://wwwuser.oat.ts.astro.it/castelli/). For the cross-check against the parameters that would be derived from the NIR spectra, the stellar parameters such as effective temperature and surface gravity were determined using the optical spectra of the solar-like stars, as preliminary results.

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to investigate the potential of interactance mode of NIR spectroscopy technology for the estimation of soluble solids content (SSC) and firmness of muskmelons. Methods: Melon samples were taken from local greenhouses in three different harvesting seasons (experiments 1, 2, and 3). The fruit attributes were measured at the 6 points on an equator of each sample where the spectral data were collected. The prediction models were developed using the original spectral data and the spectral data sets preprocessed by 20 methods. The performance of the models was compared. Results: In the prediction of SSC, the highest coefficient of determination ($R_{cv}{^2}$) values of the cross-validation was 0.755 (standard error of prediction, SEP=$0.89^{\circ}Brix$) with the preprocessing of normalization with range in experiment 1. The highest coefficient of determination in the robustness tests, $R_{rt}{^2}$=0.650 (SEP=$1.03^{\circ}Brix$), was found when the best model of experiment 3 was evaluated with the data set of experiment 2. The best $R_{cv}{^2}$ for the prediction of firmness was 0.715 (SEP=3.63 N) when no preprocessing was applied in experiment 1. The highest $R_{rt}{^2}$ was 0.404 (SEP=5.30 N) when the best model of experiment 3 was applied to the data set of experiment 1. Conclusions: From the test results, it can be concluded that the interactance mode of VIS/NIR spectroscopy technology has a great potential to measure SSC and firmness of thick-skinned muskmelons.

  • In this study, we investigated the feasibility of non-destructive determination of internal quality factors of Fuji apple fruit using near infrared(NIR) reflectance spectroscopy and developed the calibration models. As the reference methods, refractometer, titration and texture analyzer for sugar content, acidity and firmness were used, respectively. Samples were scanned from 1100∼2500nm with InfraAlyzer 500C spectrometer and SESAME software was used for data analysis. A multiple linear regression(MLR) analysis was performed to develop the calibrations. The correlation coefficient(R) and standard error of prediction(SEP) were as follows; 0.91, 0.41$^{\circ}$Brix for sugar content, 0.90, 0.04% for acidity and 0.84, 0.094 kg for firmness, respectively. This study shows that NIR spectroscopy can be used to evaluate the sugar content acidity and firmness of apple fruit with acceptable accuracy.

  • In this study, a FT-NIR spectroscopy was used to determine skin moisture. NIR diffuse reflectance spectra were collected from separated dorsal and abdominal hairless mouse skin. Partial least squares regression (PLSR) was applied to develop calibration models that determine the water content. The seven spectra regions, such as 833-2500, 1100-2250, 1100-1750, 1750-2250, 1200-1600, 1800-2200, and 1200-2200 except 1600-1800 nm, were investigated for the best model by PLSR. The developed model predicted skin moisture for validation set with a standard errors of prediction (SEP) of 4.43%, when used 833-2500 nm. (omitted)

  • Many interference in blood should be considered for non-invasive blood glucose level monitoring by near-infrared spectroscopy because blood glucose concentration is about 0.1% (w/v) in normal state. In this study, we investigated the influence of other blood components on blood glucose level monitoring by near-infrared spectroscopy. It carried out by newly developed portable type-NIR system (1100∼2200 nm). Spectrum features of NIR diffuse spectral data were investigated for some blood compnents powder such as hemoglobin, blood serum albumin, urea, uric acid, ascorbate, glucose, cholesterol and as adding glucose powder into other blood components powder mixture. • Identifying the components of residues that are not completely burned at the sites of fires site can provide valuable information for tracing the causes of fires. In order to clarify the types of plastic combustion residues found at the scenes of fires, we studied the residue formed after the combustion of polyethylene (PE) and acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS). Plastic samples were burned at 200, 300, 350, 400, and $500^{\circ}C$ for 3 min using a cone calorimeter, and the changes in weight and combustion products were observed. The powder products obtained by lyophilization and pulverization of the combustion products obtained at each temperature were analyzed by a Fourier transform-near infrared (FT-NIR) spectrometer. When the PE samples were burned, the weight did not change up to $350^{\circ}C$, however a significant change in the weight could be measured above $400^{\circ}C$. The principal component analysis (PCA) of the FT-NIR spectra of the PE and ABS samples obtained at each temperature confirmed that the combustion residues at each temperature were PE and ABS, respectively. Therefore, the types of unburned plastics found at the sites of fires can be confirmed rapidly by near infrared spectroscopy.

  • It is important to prescribe and take medicines that are appropriate for symptoms, since medicines are closely related to human health and life. Moreover, it becomes more important to accurately classify genuine medicines with counterfeit, since the number of counterfeit increases worldwide. However, the number of high-quality experts who have enough experience to properly classify them is limited and there exists a need for the automatic technique to classify medicine tablets. In this paper, we propose a method to classify the tablets by using a handheld spectrometer which provides both Near Infra-Red (NIR) and visible light spectrums. We adopted Support Vector Machine(SVM) as a machine learning algorithm for tablet classification. As a result of the simulation, we could obtain the classification accuracy of 99.9 % on average by using both NIR and visible light spectrums. Also, we proposed a two-step SVM approach to discriminate the counterfeit tablets from the genuine ones. This method could improve both the accuracy and the processing time.

  • Nondestructive evaluation of seed viability is one of the highly demanding technologies for seed production industry. Conventional seed sorting technologies, such as tetrazolium and standard germination test are destructive, time consuming, and labor intensive methods. Near infrared spectroscopy technique has shown good potential for nondestructive quality measurements for food and agricultural products. In this study, FT-NIR spectroscopy was used to classify normal and artificially aged lettuce seeds. The spectra with the range of 1100~2500 nm were scanned for lettuce seeds and analyzed using the principal component analysis(PCA) method. To classify viable seeds from nonviable seeds, a calibration modeling set was developed with a partial least square(PLS) method. The calibration model developed from PLS resulted in 98% classification accuracy with the Savitzky-Golay $1^{st}$ derivative preprocessing method. The prediction accuracy for the test data set was 93% with the MSC(Multiplicative Scatter Correction) preprocessing method. The results show that FT-NIR has good potential for discriminating non-viable lettuce seeds from viable ones.
