Strength and behaviour of reinforced SCC wall panels in one-way action

  • A total of 28 wall panels were cast and tested under uniformly distributed axial load in one-way in-plane action to study the effect of slenderness ratio (SR) and aspect ratio (AR) on the ultimate load. Two concrete formulations, normal concrete (NC) and self compacting concrete (SCC), were used for the casting of wall panels. Out of 28 wall panels, 12 were made of NC and the remaining 16 panels were of SCC. All the 12 NC panels and 12 out of 16 SCC panels were used to study the influence of SR and the remaining 4 SCC panels were tested to study the effect of AR on the ultimate load. A brief review of studies available in literature on the strength and behaviour of reinforced concrete (RC) wall panels is presented. Load-deformation response was recorded and analyzed. The ultimate load of SCC wall panels decreases non-linearly with the increase in SR and decreases linearly with increasing values of AR. Based on this study a method is proposed to predict the ultimate load of reinforced SCC wall panels. The modified method includes the effect of SR, AR and concrete strength.

Effects of a functional fatty acid blend on growth performance, intestinal morphology, and serum profiles in weaned piglets

  • Objective: The objective of this study was to determine whether dietary supplementation with a functional fatty acid blend (FA) that contains 31.4% butyric acid and 4.99% medium-chain FA improve growth performance, antioxidant capacity, immunity status, and anti-inflammatory ability in weaned piglets. Methods: One hundred and forty-four healthy piglets (Duroc×Landrace×Yorkshire) with an average body weight (BW) of 7.98±3.43 kg were randomly divided into three groups with six replicate pens and eight piglets per pen: Normal control (NC): a corn-soybean basal diet; FA1: a basal diet supplemented with 1,000 mg/kg of a functional FA; FA2: a basal diet supplemented with 2,000 mg/kg of a functional FA. The experiment lasted for 28 d. On d 14 and 28, one piglet in each pen from NC and FA2 groups was randomly selected for antioxidative index and immunoglobulins. On d 28, one piglet in each pen from NC and FA2 groups was randomly selected for intestinal morphology and inflammatory factor. Results: We observed that FA supplementation linearly increased (p<0.05) average daily gain and the final BW. There was higher (p<0.05) catalase on d 14, and immunoglobulin (Ig) A and IgM on d 28 in piglets supplemented with FA2 than in the NC group. Moreover, dietary FA2 reduced (p<0.05) crypt depth of ileum in piglets. The concentrations of tumor necrosis factor-α, interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-8, and IL-10 in jejunum were lower (p<0.05) in the FA2 group compared with the NC group. Conclusion: Therefore, the overall results suggests that the FA may help to improve gut health, antioxidant status, and immune parameters resulting in the improvement of growth performance.

Improvement of Fibrinolytic Activity of Bacillus subtilis 168 by Integration of a Fibrinolytic Gene into the Chromosome

  • Fibrinolytic enzyme genes (aprE2, aprE176, and aprE179) were introduced into the Bacillus subtilis 168 chromosome without any antibiotic resistance gene. An integration vector, pDG1662, was used to deliver the genes into the amyE site of B. subtilis 168. Integrants, SJ3-5nc, SJ176nc, and SJ179nc, were obtained after two successive homologous recombinations. The integration of each fibrinolytic gene into the middle of the amyE site was confirmed by phenotypes (Amy-, SpecS) and colony PCR results for these strains. The fibrinolytic activities of the integrants were higher than that of B. subtilis 168 by at least 3.2-fold when grown in LB broth. Cheonggukjang was prepared by inoculating each of B. subtilis 168, SJ3-5nc, SJ176nc, and SJ179nc, and the fibrinolytic activity of cheonggukjang was 4.6 ± 0.7, 10.8 ± 0.9, 7.0 ± 0.6, and 8.0 ± 0.2 (U/g of cheonggukjang), respectively at 72 h. These results showed that construction of B. subtilis strains with enhanced fibrinolytic activities is possible by integration of a strong fibrinolytic gene via a marker-free manner.

Dietary protease improves growth performance, nutrient digestibility, and intestinal morphology of weaned pigs

  • This study was conducted to evaluate effects of dietary protease (PR) on growth performance, nutrient digestibility, and intestinal morphology of weaned pigs. A total of 75 weaned pigs [7.06 ± 0.18 kg of average body weight (BW); 28 day old] were randomly allotted to 3 dietary treatments in a randomized complete block design (blocks = BW and sex): a diet based on corn and soybean meal to meet the requirement of crude protein (CP) as a positive control (PC; CP = 24.49%), a low protein diet as a negative control (NC; CP = 22.51%), and NC + 0.02% PR. The PR used in this study was a commercial product containing 75,000 protease units/g derived from Nocardiopsis prasina produced in Bacillus licheniformis. Pigs were fed the dietary treatments for 6 weeks and the diets containing 0.2% chromic oxide for the last week of this study. Blood, feces, ileal digesta, and ileum samples were collected from randomly selected two pigs in each pen on respective time points. Measurements were growth performance, apparent ileal digestibility (AID) and apparent total tract digestibility (ATTD) of dry matter (DM), CP, and energy, frequency of diarrhea, packed cell volume (PCV), and ileal morphology of weaned pigs. Pigs fed PC and PR had higher (p < 0.05) final BW, average daily gain (ADG), and gain to feed ratio (G:F) during overall experimental period than those fed NC. Pigs fed PC and PR had higher (p < 0.05) AID or ATTD of DM, CP, or energy than those fed NC. Moreover, pigs fed PR had higher ratio between villus height and crypt depth (p < 0.05) and number of goblet cells (p < 0.05) than those fed NC. Addition of PR decreased (p < 0.05) frequency of diarrhea for the first two weeks after weaning compared with PC and NC. In addition, pigs fed PR had lower (p < 0.05) PCV on d 14 after weaning than those fed PC and NC. In conclusion, addition of PR in nursery diets with a low protein level significantly improved growth performance, nutrient digestibility, and intestinal morphology of weaned pigs.

저온스팀 열처리 방식에 따른 감자의 전처리 특성 (Pretreatment Characteristics of Potatoes by Soft Steam Treatment)

  • 본 연구는 최근 매우 우수한 가열 매체로 인정받고 있는 저온스팀(soft steam) 열처리 공정의 natural convection (NC) 방식과 forced convection-boiler (FC-b) 및 forced convection-fan (FC-f) 방식을 이용하여 처리온도(60, 70, $80^{\circ}C$) 및 시간(0-60분)에 따른 감자의 전처리 특성을 비교 평가하고자 하였다. 스팀처리 방식에 따른 가열실 내부의 온도변화와 감자 내 외부의 온도변화, 감자의 cook value, ascorbic aicd 및 수분의 함량과 중량감소율의 변화를 관찰한 결과, 모든 처리조건에서 FC-b 및 FC-f의 강제대류 방식에 비해 자연대류의 NC 방식이 이들 전처리 특성에 대해 우수한 결과를 나타냄을 확인할 수 있었다. 따라서, 본 연구의 결과들은 감자의 가공 및 전처리를 위해 현재 사용되고 있는 기존의 열처리 공정에 대한 대안으로써 NC 방식 스팀처리의 높은 효율성 및 산업적 적용에 대한 가능성을 제시하고 있다.

Bacillus subtilis NC1 유래 cellulase와 xylanase의 특성 규명 및 효소 유전자의 규명 (Characterization of Cellulase and Xylanase from Bacillus subtilis NC1 Isolated from Environmental Soil and Determination of Its Genes)

  • Carboxymethylcellulose (CM-cellulose)와 Beechwood xylan을 각각 기질로 사용하여 trypan blue를 첨가하여 제작한 Agar-LB 배지 상에서 명확한 활성환을 형성하는 균주를 cellulase와 xylanase 생산 균주로 단리하였다. 단리한 균주 유래의 16S rRNA 유전자 및 API 50 kit를 분석한 결과 Bacillus subtilis와 약 99.5%의 높은 상동성을 보였기에 본 균주를 Bacillus subtilis로 동정하여 B. subtilis NC1로 명명하였다. B. subtilis NC1 유래 cellulase와 xylanase는 CM-cellulose와 Beechwood xylan에 대하여 각각 높은 효소 활성을 보였으며, 두 효소 모두 pH 5.0과 $50^{\circ}C$의 조건하에서 가장 높은 효소 활성을 보였다. B. subtilis NC1 균주 유래 cellulase와 xylanase 유전자를 cloning하기 위하여 shot-gun cloning 방법을 이용하여 B. subtilis NC1 염색체 DNA로부터 효소 유전자를 cloning하여 유전자 배열을 규명한 결과 cellulase 유전자는 아미노산 499개를 암호화하는 1,500 bp의 open reading frame (ORF)으로 이루어져 있었으며, 아미노산 배열로부터 추정되는 분자량은 55,251 Da 이었다. 그리고, xylanase에 대한 유전자는 아미노산 422개를 암호화하는 1,269 bp의 ORF로 이루어져 있었으며 유전자 유래 아미노산 배열로부터 추정되는 단백질 분자량은 47,423 Da 이었다. 두 효소의 아미노산 배열을 이용하여 상동성을 검토한 결과 cellulase는 glycoside hydrolase family (GH) 5에 속하는 cellulase와 xylanase는 GH30에 속하는 xylanase와 높은 상동성을 나타내었다.

Data-driven prediction of compressive strength of FRP-confined concrete members: An application of machine learning models

  • The strength models for fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP)-confined normal strength concrete (NC) cylinders available in the literature have been suggested based on small databases using limited variables of such structural members portraying less accuracy. The artificial neural network (ANN) is an advanced technique for precisely predicting the response of composite structures by considering a large number of parameters. The main objective of the present investigation is to develop an ANN model for the axial strength of FRP-confined NC cylinders using various parameters to give the highest accuracy of the predictions. To secure this aim, a large experimental database of 313 FRP-confined NC cylinders has been constructed from previous research investigations. An evaluation of 33 different empirical strength models has been performed using various statistical parameters (root mean squared error RMSE, mean absolute error MAE, and coefficient of determination R2) over the developed database. Then, a new ANN model using the Group Method of Data Handling (GMDH) has been proposed based on the experimental database that portrayed the highest performance as compared with the previous models with R2=0.92, RMSE=0.27, and MAE=0.33. Therefore, the suggested ANN model can accurately capture the axial strength of FRP-confined NC cylinders that can be used for the further analysis and design of such members in the construction industry.

Effects of vitamin K supplementation on reproductive performance and bone metabolism-related biochemical markers in lactation sows

  • Objective: This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of vitamin K (VK) supplementation on reproductive performance and bone metabolism-related biochemical markers in sows. Methods: Twenty-four Large White×Landrace sows (mean parity 4.04) were randomly assigned to two dietary treatments (NC diet, a basal diet with 0.5 mg/kg of VK3; VK diet, a basal diet with 5 mg/kg of VK3) with twelve replicates per treatment and one sow per replicate according to parity. The experiment started on day 107 of gestation and lasted until day 21 of lactation (weaning). Results: We observed that there were no differences (p>0.05) in average daily feed intake, backfat loss of sows, live piglet number at birth and weaning, average birth weight, average weaning weight, and average daily gain of piglets between two treatments. The apparent total tract digestibility of phosphorus was increased (p<0.05) in VK sows compared with NC sows. The serum bone alkaline phosphatase, osteocalcin, type I procollagen amino-terminal peptide, and type I procollagen carboxyl-terminal peptide on day of farrowing were higher (p<0.05) in VK sows than in NC sows. The serum phosphorus, parathyroid hormone, tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase, and tumor necrosis factor-alpha on day of weaning were lower (p<0.05) in VK sows compared with NC sows. Conclusion: Therefore, the overall results suggested that increasing dietary VK3 (0.5 to 5 mg/kg) during lactation improved the apparent total tract digestibility of phosphorus and serum bone metabolism biochemical markers in sows.

Simultaneous 3D Machining with Real-Time NURBS Interpolation

  • Increasing demand on precision machining using computerized numerical control (CNC) machines have necessitated that the tool move not only with the smallest possible position error but also with smoothly varying feedrates in 3-dimensional (3D) space. This paper presents the simultaneous 3D machining process investigated using a retrofitted PC-NC milling machine. To achieve the simultaneous 3-axis motions, a new precision interpolation algorithm for 3D Non Uniform Rational B-Spline (NURBS) curve is proposed. With this accurate and efficient algorithm for the generation of complex 3D shapes, a real-time NURBS interpolator was developed using a PC and the simultaneous 3D machining was accomplished satisfactorily.
