  • Using NC or CNC machine tool, the unmanned automatic production system has been growing recently in the manufacturing field. Thus it is important to find out the machinability of cutting force, tool wear and surface roughness during the cutting process. It is necessary to find how to estimate the machinability for the effective cutting condition because of problem about cutting power, tool wear, cutting time and precision. This study was planned to discover the relations of tool wear by variations of roughness and derived to correlate the wear with the surface roughness on the cutting parameter(cutting force, flank wear, surface roughness, friction angle, shear angle, slenderness ratio) when the aluminum alloy was cut in turning.

  • The early day of manufacturing automation systems are NC machine tool Based automation, and now it become FA, DNC, FMC, FMS, CIM and IMS. Manufacturing Automation Technology is applied the increase of all industrial manufacturing competitve power. so the demand of this skill is repidly increase. This Technology can solve lack of manpower, decrease of productivity, and become weakened international competitive. But, automation rate of our country is 30-40%, because the level of domestic technology is low, so we need systemic research of manufacturing automation. The targets of this study are increase the data processing ability of CNC controller, and development of autonomous manufacturing system that can decision making between production module such as setup, manufacturing, inspection and transportation and part that object of manufacturing.

  • A feature is well known as a medium to integrate CAD, CAPP and CAM systems. For a part drawing including both simple geometry and compound geometry, a process plan such as the selection of process, machine tool, cutting tool etc. normally needs simple geometry data and non-geometry data of the feature as the input. However, a extended process plan such as the generation of process sequence, operation sequence, jig & fixture, NC program etc. necessarily needs the compound geometry data as well as the simple geometry data and non-geometry data. In this paper, we propose a feature data model according to the result of analyzing necessary data, including the compound geometry data, the simple geometry data and the non-geometry data. Also, an example of the feature data model in milling process planning is described.

  • Investments in factory automation do not guarantee productivity enhancement. Much unknown losses may exist in all aspects of production resources such as in material, manpower, machine, etc. Total productivity in korean firms has decreased in recent years. Labor and capital productivity index fall to 0.82 point and 0.73 point, respectively. Investment in FA has Increased rapidly. Tangible fixed assets per capita increased 64% during the past Three years. But, this high-technology oriented systems such as NC, robotics, CAD/CAM, FMS, etc. are often out of keeping with the old production process control, and thus do not result in satisfactory performance. This review paper concerned with these problems and suggests some future directions for production control and development strategy of korean firm's.

  • In this study, Acquisition system is proposed to acquire 3 dimensional data of the free surface model using direct pulse control to machining center. Todo this, I/F to connect between manual operating handle and computer is made, and 3 dimensional shape measuring algorithm using Z-map is applied. The 3 dimensional shape data of the free surface model measured by laser displacement sensor and electric touch probe are achieved directly. Performance of the proposed system is evaluated through measurement of various shape model.

  • Dieless CNC forming is an innovative technology which can form various materials with complex shape by numerically controlled incremental forming process. In this paper, a method of NC tool path generation based on an STL file for dieless CNC forming is proposed. Tool trajectory adopts the principle of layered manufacturing in rapid prototyping technology, but it is necessary to consider STL offset because of the ball shaped tool with a radius. Vertex offset method which enables to compute offset STL directly is engaged for STL offset. The offseted STL is sliced by cutting planes to generate contouring tool path. Algorithm is implemented on a computer and experimented on a dieless CNC forming machine to show its validity.

  • This paper describes a new surface finishing process which uses magnetic abrasive polishing. This is applied to automatic finishing of die & mold surface. Nowadays, most of die & mold meanufaturing procedures have been automated by the introduction of NC machine tool and CAD/CAM system. But the surface finishing of die & mold must be done by hand work of well-skilled workers. Though many attempts were tried in the past 15 years to eliminate this hand work, the automatic finishing of die & mold surface with 3D curvature has not been achieved yet. New magnetic abrasive finishing process is thought as one of the possible methods for the automation of 3D surface finishing. In order to improve the grindability of the method, ultra-high speed and 5-axis machining was introduce. The magnetic abrasive polishing which has adopted these methods was confirmend to improve the efficiencyof die & mold surface finishing.

  • A method for determining the collision-free tool orientation for 5-axis milling is presented. In 5-axis milling, the proper tool orientation as well as the optimal CC-data has to be selected to machine the workpiece efficiently and accurately and accurately. Essentially, the tool orientation should be determined to avoid collisions between the tool and workpiece and to enable efficient machining. In this work, the tool orientation is determined at every CC-point which is assumed to be given. The procedure uses the potential energy method that assumes the tool and the part surfaces are charged with static electricity. This approach can detect can deteat both global and local collisions (gouging) irrespective of the tool shape. Further, in order to increase the machining efficiency, the material removal rate is maximized simultaneously.

  • This paper describes the method and the process for impeller machining on 5-axis CNC machining center. Also, The CAD/CAM software for the impeller post processing is developed. The software can be interfaced with Solid-works software for confirmation of the impeller shapes. In this study, blades on impeller is described from Ruled-surfaces between two Ferguson curves. In this study, using 5-axis NC part program obtained from the developed software, a sample impeller was machined on 5-axis CNC machining center. The machined impeller was very agreeable to the designed impeller. Thus, theories proposed in this study can be very useful for the 5-axis machining of impeller blades with Ruled-surfaces.

  • The machining accuracy has been improved with the development of NC machine tools and cutting tools. However, it is difficult to obtain a high degree of accuracy when machining deep pocket with long end mill, since machining accuracy is mainly dependant on the stiffness of the cutting tool. To improve surface accuracy in machining deep pocket using end mill, the performance by down cut and up cut is compared theoretically and experimentally. To verify usefulness of up milling, various experiments were carried out. As a result, it is found that up milling produce more accurate surface than down milling in machining deep pocket. For effective application of up milling, various values in helix angle, number of teeth, radial depth of cut and axial depth of cut are applied in experiment.
