  • Purpose: Gardening has been reported to have positive emotional and physical effects in older adults. However, limited studies have assessed this relationship in Korea. Therefore, in this pilot study of densely populated urban dwellers, we aimed to investigate whether temporary but repeated experiences of the natural environment could positively change metabolism-related blood indicators. Methods: This study used pre- and post-interventional designs to investigate the effects of 16 weeks of gardening on lipid profiles in an urban adult population and investigate their relationships. This study was conducted 30 times at the H Botanical Garden in Yongin City from August 16, 2021 to November 30, 2021 (16 weeks, twice a week, 3 hours each time). Before and after the gardening program, a clinical pathologist collected blood samples from the participants. Results: High-density lipoprotein levels increased, low-density lipoprotein levels decreased, and total cholesterol levels decreased after the gardening activity. Conclusions: Our findings suggest that gardening has potential for clinical application as it has good control over the lipid profile through physical activity. These findings can be used as basic data for studying the relationship between urban populations and their living environment and for various studies in the future as experiencing the natural environment provides many health benefits.

  • Metaverse services generate text data, data of ubiquitous computing, in real-time to analyze user emotions. Analysis of user emotions is an important task in metaverse services. This study aims to classify user sentiments using deep learning and pre-trained language models based on the transformer structure. Previous studies collected data from a single platform, whereas the current study incorporated the review data as "Metaverse" keyword from the YouTube and Google Play Store platforms for general utilization. As a result, the Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers (BERT) and Robustly optimized BERT approach (RoBERTa) models using the soft voting mechanism achieved a highest accuracy of 88.57%. In addition, the area under the curve (AUC) score of the ensemble model comprising RoBERTa, BERT, and A Lite BERT (ALBERT) was 0.9458. The results demonstrate that the ensemble combined with the RoBERTa model exhibits good performance. Therefore, the RoBERTa model can be applied on platforms that provide metaverse services. The findings contribute to the advancement of natural language processing techniques in metaverse services, which are increasingly important in digital platforms and virtual environments. Overall, this study provides empirical evidence that sentiment analysis using deep learning and pre-trained language models is a promising approach to improving user experiences in metaverse services.

  • Riverine flood is one of the critical natural threats to river-crossing bridges. As floods are the most-occurred natural hazard worldwide, survival probability of bridges due to floods must be assessed in a speedy but precise manner. In this regard, the paper presents a reliability-based approach for a rapid assessment of failure probability of vulnerable bridge components under floods. This robust method is generic in nature and can be applied to both concrete and steel girder bridges. The developed methodology essentially utilizes limit state performance functions, expressed in terms of capacity and flood demand, for probable failure modes of various vulnerable components of bridges. Advanced First Order Reliability Method (AFORM), Monte Carlo Simulation (MCS), and Latin Hypercube Simulation (LHS) techniques are applied for the purpose of reliability assessment and developing flood fragility curves of bridges in which flow velocity and water height are taken as flood intensity measures. Upon validating the proposed method, it is applied to a case study bridge that experiences the flood scenario of a river in Gujarat, India. Research outcome portrays how effectively and efficiently the proposed reliability-based method can be applied for a quick assessment of flood vulnerability of bridges in any flood-prone region of interest.

  • Because of the ozone layer depletion and global wanning, new alternative refrigerants are being developed. Among them, HFC refrigerants are thought promising, but some European countries are arguing that these refrigerants are also harmful to the global wanning. Therefore, natural refrigerants should be considered as an eventual alternative in refrigerators and heat pumps. In the present study, the supercritical gas cooling process are computationally analysed by employing various turbulence models of carbon dioxide in a trans critical refrigeration cycle. The gas cooling process near the critical point experiences a drastic change in thermodynamic and transport properties, thus the heat transfer characteristics would be different from those of two or single phases. Based on the computational results, the correlations to estimate the near-critical heat transfer characteristics will are obtained.

  • The ability of 'creative thinking' is one of the most important fact for designers to complete their design process. It is not only the overall concept of the process but also all details related to each steps of the process such as planning product strategies, research, finding ways to solve problems image development, broadening ideas, etc. It is, however, not easy to creative as designers by natural learning through experiences unless they have geniuses for creative designing. Many experienced designers in the field are even in dilemmas being not be able to differentiate from copying other designs. This study is focused on the researches on the works of famous designers, architects and artists who have shown great creativities throw their works or processes. It is aimed to define their ways of thinking which could be fundamental motives for the creativeness, various behavioral methods to solve problems in creative ways, technical approaches to improve creativities, and overall intuition in the design working processes.

  • The piping route of hydraulic hose is designed with avoiding interferences to surrounding components. However, in a real practice, the piping route is mostly decided with an expert's experiences on site due to the complexity of design. Thus, this paper proposes a design methodology of the optimized route of a hose. We use NURBS representation to describe the piping route, which is possible to be locally modified, and an energy minimization method is applied to avoid interferences to the surroundings. In other words, the NURBS curve describing a piping route is modified to meet the desired positions from minimizing the perturbation of the control points, and the strain energy of the curve is then optimized to make the curve natural. The proposed method is implemented and its feasibility is validated using the commercial CAD software, CATIA V5.

  • When a bulk power system experiences a serious disturbance or heavy load trip, the system frequency may drop and even collapse if the total generating power does not supply the system demand sufficiently. Since an isolated power system possesses a lower inertia and comes with limited reserves, the load shedding by under frequency relay becomes an important strategy to keep system natural frequency. This paper presents a scheme to determine the load shedding criteria by using the rate of change of frequency when the large disturbance happens.

  • Responsible tourism has become an established area of the tourism industry. This study aims to identify the factors that influence re-participation in responsible tourism in rural Korea. On-site survey was conducted on 436 tourists by seven responsible tourism agencies in Korea. The motivation for responsible tourists was categorized into seven types: family togetherness, escape and relaxation, personal growth, social interaction, various experiences, learning, and natural experience. The estimation of a binary logistic regression model determined the characteristics of responsible tourists who are most likely to opt for re-participation in responsible tourism. Results indicated that important factors for re-participation in responsible tourism were 'age', 'educational level', 'accompany', 'length of stay', and 'motivation'. The results implied that tourists' internal and external factors are important for re-participation in responsible tourism. It is expected that this study will contribute to the market expansion of responsible tourism.

  • As the disk rotation speed increases in information storage devices, aerodynamically excited disk vibration is induced by airflow around the disk. This paper investigates theoretical and experimental studies on the disk flutter instability in CD-ROM drives. The effect of airflow on the disk vibration is modeled as the distributed damping and lift forces. By analyzing the eigenvalue problem of the aero-elastic coupling model, we introduces a novel technique to predict the flutter speed by comparing experimental natural frequencies with analytical ones of a disk rotating in vacuum. The new method predicts that the vibration mode with two nodal diameters in a CD disk experiences the first flutter instability at 12,000 rpm.

  • Recently as the development of a large-scale ocean structure or ocean is in progress, the importance of underwater concrete construction came to the fore. However, a problem with this underwater concrete construction is the segregation of cement and aggregate occurs when concrete is poured into the underwater. However, recently as an adhesiveness of the constituents of fresh concrete is increased even in our country, antiwashout concrete admixture were developed. The antiwashout concrete admixture can reduce the segregation significantly. Although this antiwashout underwater concrete is superior to the traditional underwater concrete in terms of durability, watertightness, stability, etc. But it is still unsatisfied due to the lack of criterion or construction experiences. Furthermore, because of an insufficiency of natural aggregate, the development of replacing aggregate came to be necessary. Accordingly, the purpose of this study is to investigate the feasibility of sea sand as a replacing aggregate and the characteristic change of antiwashout underwater concrete using river sand, sea sand, and blended sand (river sand:sea sand=3:7) through experimental researches.
