Mycorrhizae is well known to increase the uptake of P and other mineral nutrients of plants. But if available P levels in soil is too low or high, mycorrhizae formation is limited. This study was carried out to determine the optimum level of available P for mycorrhizae formation of Poncirus trifoliata (trifoliate orange) seedling in volcanic ash soil. Eight levels of P in the range $0-1050mg\;kg^{-1}$ were applied with double superphosphate, and in each P level mycorrhizal fungi inoculated and uninnoculated treatments were included. The seedlings were grown in a greenhouse for 5 months and mycorrhizae formation, growth, and nutrient uptake were measured. As P application level increased, mycorrhizae formation increased at lower range of P application and the highest formation ratio of 43% was found at $100mg\;kg^{-1}$ P level ($2.6mg\;kg^{-1}$ available P in soil). At further higher levels of P application, mycorrhizae formation was rather suppressed. Seedling growth was increased by the inoculation of mycorrhizal fungi, and maximum growth was found at $100mg\;kg^{-1}$ P level where mycorrhizae formation was highest. The growth and mineral nutrient uptake of Poncirus trifoliata seedling represented a significant positive correlation with mycorrhizae formation at all P treatments.
Pinus koraiensis (Pk), P. rigida (Pr) and P. rigida ${\times}$ P. taeda (Pr. t) seedlings in a bare-rooted nursery were artificially inoculated with Pisolithus tinctorius (Pt) and Thelephora terrestris (Tt) to test long term effects of ectomycorrhizal inoculation on host growth. Mycelial inocula of Pt and Tt were mass-cultured in vermiculite-peatmoss mixture and introduced into fumigated nursery soil before seed sowing. Bare-rooted, inoculated seedlings at one to four years of age were outplanted to the field with $P_2O_5$ content of 25 ppm in soil. At the time of outplanting, Pk seedlings(4 years old), Pr seedlings(2 years old), and Pr.t seedlings(1 year old) all infected by Pt were significantly taller by 28%. 26%, and 77%, respectively, than controlled seedlings infected by natural population of mycorrhizal fungi in the non-fumigated plot. Ten years after inoculation or six to nine years after outplanting, Pk seedlings inoculated with Pt were significantly taller by 9% Pr.t seedlings significantly taller by 18%, and Pr slightly Caller by 2%(not significant) than controlled seedlings, suggesting that the stimulatory effect of Pt on host growth gradually declined or became minimal after outplanting. Tt failed to stimulate host growth either in the nursery or in the field, and the survival rate of outplanted seedlings was not different among fungal treatments. Considerable loss of the infected root system during lifting the seedlings for outplanting would be the primary cause of the reduced effect of Pt in the field. Pt infected more than 90% of the fine roots in the fumigated nursery during the first growing season, but Pt assumed to fail to compete successfully with natural population of ectomycorrhizal fungi in the field. It is necessary to select other mycorrhizal fungi which adapt well in both nursery and field.
The purposes of this study were to evaluate the effects of acid rain on tree growth and on the mycorrhizal formation and the effects of mycorrhizae on the host tolerance to acid rain. Simulated acid rain was applied for five months to Pinus $rigida{\times}taeda$ seedlings in pots inoculated with Pisolithus tinctorius (Pt) and Suillus luteus (Sl). Mycelial inocula of Pt and Sl were either mixed with entire pot soil (Mix) or casted as a band (Band) after soil sterilization. Three pH levels of acid rain (pH 3.0, 4.5 and 6.4 adjusted by 3 : 1 mixture of sulfuric and nitric acids) were tested. Pt-Mix was most effective in growth stimulation and resulted in 45-90% increase in tree height in sandy loam. Pt-Band was less effective than Pt-Mix in growth stimulation and mycorrhizal formation. Simulated acid rain at pH 4.5 stimulated height growth by 10-55%, while acid rain at pH 3.0 did not significantly affect the height growth. The top/root ratio was increased by pH 4.5 treatment, while pH 3.0 treatment reduced it. Mycorrhizal infection rate was not affected by acid rain. Pt inoculation reduced acid-induced leaf injury by 28-58% in both pH 3.0 and 4.5 compared with un-inoculated plants. Sl was also effective in growth enhancement, but was less effective than Pt in both mycorrhizal infection and reducing leaf injury.

Due to recent scientific innovations in mulberry cultivation, leaf yield has been increased manifold. However, with successive leaf harvest, a quantum drop in leaf yield and quality has been noted. This inturn has affected the silkworm rearing and farmers suffered by the frequent crop failures. This is mainly due to nutrient deficiencies in mulberry leaf. Moreover, no complete information is available about hunger signs of nutritional disorders, analytical diagnosis and critical levels of nutrients required. The present paper, thus, may serve as an important nutrient guide for identification of hunger signs, leaf nutrients status under deficiency and critical levels of the elements namely N, P, K, Ca, Mg, S, B, Cu, Fe, Mn and Zn requirements for higher leaf yield and quality. The leaf nutrient status provided may help chemist for correcting the soil status. Besides, an integration of mulberry intercropping with legumes and applications of neem and castor oil cakes, VA-mycorrhizal inoculation, biofertilizer and vermicompost are suggested as integrated nutrient management for sustainable sericulture industry. Based on the information described in this paper, a model needs to be framed for maintaining continuous supply of nutrients to obtain desired quantity and quality of mulberry leaf for successful silkworm cocoon crop and increasing overall silk productivity.
Mulberry Seedlings germinated and grown under green house conditions were inoculated with Glomus mosseae, Mosse and Trappe (a Kind of Vesicular arbuscular mycorrhizae) prior to outplanting into unsterilized soil. They were grown on phosphate deficient soil for 6 months after planting. Shoot length, stem diameter and leaf yield of the inoculated plants were found to be significantly greater than uninoculated ones. It was observed in foliar mineral content that the levels of N, P$_2$O$\sub$5/, CaO of the inoculated plants were higher but the level of MgO of the inoculated plants was lower than the uninoculated ones. In the mineral content of roots, it was observed that the level of P$_2$O$\sub$5/ was higher but the level of N was lower significantly in the inoculated plants than the uninoculated ones.
An investigation was conducted on the effects of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus, Glomus etunicatum on the formation of soil aggregate and mycorhizal development in the roots of Robinia pseudoacacia seedlings in coal mine tailings and forest soil. G. etunicatum formed mycorrhizas by 35.1 % in coal mine tailings and by 48.9 % in forest soil. Its infection was the typical Arum-type forming inter-cellular hyphae and intra-cellular arbuscules. Ergosterol contents were 3.20 ppm in forest soil and 1.92 ppm in coal mine tailings. The formation of soil aggregate per 50 g pot soil was 19.6 g and 9.5 g in inoculated and noninoculated forest soil and 16.5 g and 11.0 g in inoculated and non-inoculated coal min tailings, respectively. In conclusion, G. etunicatum inoculation increased the formation of soil aggregate both in forest soil and coal mine tailings, but was less effective in the latter.
This study was carried out to acguire some basic information on nutritional and lhysiological effects of vesicular arbuscular mycorrhizae(VAM) on mulberry trees inoculated with Glomus mosseae, Gerd. & Trap. grown in clay for 65 days and treated with 5 different levels of phosphorus, ie 30, 60, 120, 240, 480 ppm as (NH4)2 HPO4. At the End of the expermental period the levels of fixed phosphate in the soil was measared. And the native VAM fungi were collected to select the most effective VAM species on mulberry tree. The nutritional and biochemical effects of VA mycorrhizae on the mulberry leaves were also studied. Those results are as follow. 1. The mulberry trees grown in clay and inoculated with VAM were heavier in shoot dry weight as much as 197% than uninoculated plants. But in vermioulite, uninoculated mulberry trees were heavier as much as 135% than inoculated. 2. The rates of endo mycorrhizal formation in clay was highest at 60 ppm level of phosphorus, and vesicles in roots were formed in 240ppm and 480ppm level of phosphorus, but not in 30ppm, 60ppm and 120ppm. 3. The greatest growth responses of VAM inoculation was found at 60ppm level of hosphorus, and the optimum phosphorus level for VAM responese appeared to be 60ppm. 4. VAM was also to absorb soil-fixed phosphate. VAM abosrbed Fe-bound phosphate most efficiently and Ca-bound phosphate with ease but not Al-bound phosphate and Al-Fe occluded phosphate. 5. Three species of Gigaspora and one species of Glamus growing naturally in mulberry plantations were collected and tested for the growth responses. Gigaspora tricalipta and Gigaspora calospora revealed the greatest growth responses on mulberry tree among tested VAM fungi. 6. Mulberry leaves inoculated with VA mycorrhizal fungi contained 9.8% more phosphate and 15.2% more nitrogen, 22.2% more water-soluble carbohydrates and 15.2% more proteins than uninoculated plants. 7. The electrophoretic pattern of mulberry leaf protein inoculated with VAM fungi has 19 bands. 8. The patterns of peroxidase zymogram and Amulase zymogram were different between the mulberry leaves inoculated and uninoculated with VA mycorrhizal fungi. The peroxidase zymogram of inoculated leaves has 1 less majour band than unioculated leaves The amylase zymogram of inoculated leaves has 2 bands near the +pole, but that of uninoculated leaves has 1 band near the $pole.

Red alder(Alnus rubra Bong.) seedlings inoculated with Frankia only or both Frankia and spores of Alpova diplophloeus(Zeller & Dodge) Trappe & Smith were grown in a greenhouse for ten weeks. The ten-week-old seedlings were fertilized with six nitrogen(N) and phosphorus(P) fertility regimes (no fertilization, 10mM $NH_4NO_3$, 50mM $NH_4NO_3$, 5mM $KH_2PO_4$, 10mM $NH_4NO_3+5mM$$KH_2PO_4$, and 50mM $NH_4NO_3+5mM$$KH_2PO_4$) three times a week for ten weeks. The higher N-fertilization significantly increased mycorrhiza formation by greenhouse contaminant mycorrhizal fungi, but decreased N-fixation and P concentration in nodule tissues. P-fertilization significantly increased nodule and shoot dry weight, and P concentration in plant tissues. When N was highly fertilized, however, the P-fertilization effect disappeared in nodule P concentration but doubled in leaf P concentration. A. diplophloeus inoculation significantly increased diameter growth and $CO_2$ exchange rate, but decreased leaf dry weight. Our results suggest that the higher N- or P-fertilization affect nitrogenase activity and mycorrhizal development but the effects are changed by their interactions.
Microscopic observations of arbuscular mycorrhizae (AM) were done with the colonizations of AM and the determinations of chitin in the plant roots of Sorghum bicolor, Cassia mimosoides, Capsicum annuum and Allium fistulosum. The intercellular and intracellular hyphae, arbuscules and vesicles were microscopically observed, according to increases of colonization of AM in the roots of four plants. The growth of AM fungi appeared sigmoid with the cultivation days after inoculation. The growth of AM fungi were inversely influenced by the additions of commercial fertilizers, P
The colonization of an arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus Glomus intraradices BEG110 in the soil caused a decrease in disease severity in cucumber plants after fungal inoculation with Colletotrichum orbiculare. In order to illustrate the resistance mechanism mediated by G. intraradices BEG110, infection patterns caused by C. orbiculare in the leaves of cucumber plants and the host cellular responses were characterized. These properties were characterized using transmission electron microscopy on the leaves of cucumber plants grown in soil colonized with G. intraradices BEG110. In the untreated plants, inter- and intra-cellular fungal hyphae were observed throughout the leaf tissues during both the biotrophic and necrotrophic phases of infection. The cytoplasm of fungal hyphae appeared intact during the biotrophic phase, suggesting no defense response against the fungus. However, several typical resistance responses were observed in the plants when treated with G. intraradices BEG110 including the formation of sheaths around the intracellular hyphae or a thickening of host cell walls. These observations suggest that the resistance mediated by G. intraradices BEG110 most often occurs in the symplast of the host cells rather than in the apoplast. In addition, this resistance is similar to those mediated by biotic inducers such as plant growth promoting rhizobacteria.
