The purpose of this study was to examine how musical pieces were presented in music activities on the Teacher's Guidebooks in order for young children to experience the aesthetics of music. For the purposes of this research, the ways to address musical elements and the music activities of 100 musical works in the Teacher's Guidebooks were analyzed. In addition, the aesthetic qualities of the same musical pieces presented by the sound sources were examined. Following this, an analysis of the relationship between the elements used and the aesthetic qualities of the music was carried out by comparing the previous analysis. The results were as follows. First, melody (38.1%), rhythm (29.0%), and timbre (20.5%) were the most utilized elements of musical works in such activities. Secondly, the most utilized method to present music activities was singing. Among 100 musical pieces, 74 pieces used singing activities. Next, the most audible aesthetic quality from sound sources was that of the melody, presented in 69 pieces (46.6%) among 100 musical works. Lastly, among 100 musical works, at least 64 pieces were matched with more than one, whereas 34 did not.
There have been always some difficulties in target setting and conditioning of acoustic performances of the Korean traditional music hall due mainly to the lack of the information on the sound radiation characteristics of Korean musical sources. In this study, the radiation characteristics of four typical Korean traditional musical sources were investigated in precision and their usage was demonstrated: The selected musical sources were Gayageum (string), Daegeum (woodwind), Jango (drum), and Pansori Chang (vocal performance). Each sound source was located at the center of a semi-anechoic chamber and the directivity was determined by the measured sound pressure levels in every 10° angular position, for both vertical and horizontal directions. The directivity pattern of Gayageum varies from a uniform to a complex pattern having many side lobes with the increase of frequency. The main radiation of Daegeum is toward the upward direction. The directivity pattern of Jango is clearly a side-oriented one and the left direction intensity is sharper than its right side at low frequencies. For the Chang, the directivity pattern change from a uniform pattern to a frontally directed one as the frequency goes high. Measured directional and spectral characteristics of traditional Korean music sources were implemented into the computation of architectural acoustic measures for the Busan National Korean Traditional Music Hall which is under construction. Parameters such as RT, SPL, C80, IE, STI were calculated at two receiver positions by using a ray tracing technique. Significant differences in the acoustic measures at receiver positions were observed between the results in using the omni-directional source and the directional one. It is thought that the suggested source data and design method can be used as a basic reference in the future acoustic design of performance halls for the Korean traditional music.
The purpose of this essay is three-fold: to trace the genealogy of the Korean musical, which ever since its inception in the 1960s has been seeking to modernize Korean theater with Broadway as a constant role model; to investigate how the national and the global conflict and are conflated in the form of the Korean musical in the process of its (dis)identification with Broadway; and to examine how its intercultural translations reveal and reflect the dilemma and ambivalence posed by globalization in our era. Drawing on Richard Dyer's signature article Entertainment and Utopia, I analyze how the Korean musical manifests and conduits competing utopian impulses of Korean/Global audiences. I also attempt to problematize the formulaic notion of Broadway musicalsthe Superior Other!which implies a global hegemony that does not, in fact, exist because the boundary between the global and the local as well as the power dynamics of global culture are not fixed but constantly moving and changing. Today's musical scene in Korea shows interesting reversals from the 1990s, when Korean producers were eager to debut on Broadway and impress American audiences. Korean producers no longer look up to Broadway as a final destination; instead they want to make Seoul a new Broadway. They import Broadway musicals and turn them into Korean shows. The glamor of Broadway is no longer the main attraction of musicals in Korea. What young audiences look for most is the glamor of K-pop idols and utopian feelings of abundance, energy, intensity, transparency and community, which they can experience live in the musical with their favorite stars right in front of their eyes. In conclusion, I delve into the complex dynamics of recent Korean musicals with Thomas Friedman's theory of Globalization 3.0 as reference. The binary formula of Global/America versus Local/Korea cannot be applied to the dynamic and intercultural musical scene of today. Globalization is not a uniform phenomenon but rather a twofold (multifold) process of global domination and dissemination, in which the global and the local conflict and are conflated constantly. As this study tries to illuminate, the Korean musical has evolved in a huge net of interdependences between the global and the local with a range of sources, powers and influences.

The Ewha Music Database (EMDB) is an online database comprised of primary source materials related to music education from East Asia during the modern era (1880 to 1945) when Korea, Japan, and China were geopolitically and culturally intertwined. We developed the incipit search in EMDB as an embedded tool. This is the first attempt in Korea to implement a unique search function of musical data using alphabets of musical notes. Unlike in traditional search system that uses general literature information search conditions, such as author, title, publisher, year, number of pages, etc., it offers a new way of searching a musical piece/work and sheet music. This study confirms that digital information technology is an important methodology for research of music culture as a field of humanities.

The results show that the directivity pattern of each instrument is different and has their own directivity characteristics. Measured directional and spectral characteristics of traditional Korean music sources were implemented into the computation of architectural acoustic measures. Significant differences in the acoustic measures at receiver positions were observed between the results in using the omni-directional source and the directional one. In order to investigate the acoustical characteristics of the instruments depending on the spatial variation four different shapes of halls were introduced including rectangular, fan. horse-shoe and geometrical shapes. Room acoustical parameters such as RT, SPL, C80, LF, STI were calculated at each type or hall. As the results, It was found that the rectangular hall has the most high clarity. lateral energy and STI values among low shapes of halls. It is thought that the suggested source data and design method can be used as a basic reference in the future acoustic design of performance halls for the Korean traditional music.
An advancement and wide use of portable multimedia devices make it easy to spread digital sound source, enabling users to use portable multimedia devices and search and enjoy digital sound sources and related contents. In opposition the off-line musical service market with CD stagnates gradually and in the crisis where the off-line musical service market vanishes away. In this paper, we propose the mobile music album information retrieval system which combines the barcode and a cellular phone musical service. To get digital sound sources and related information from music albums, the proposed retrieval system uses one-dimensional barcodes attached to music albums and obtains information on related albums from the sound source servers. Also, to reflect user preferences in search results, the system uses search frequency by music album, and searches albums in music genres selected by users in the order of the recent preference. The proposed mobile music album retrieval system is implemented on the basis of WIPI, and is now providing pilot services.
This is the first study in Musicology that discusses the features of Kangwon Sangkangrye(the pre-lecture ritual in Buddhism). In this thesis, I reviewed and compared the similarity and uniqueness between Kangwon Sangkangrye in "Seokmunuibom" and the one being performed these days. The musical relation between the performance shown in the historical record and the one in contemporary ritual was illustrated here based on the findings derived from the anlaysis on its bell(小鐘) performance. The analysis made upon musical sources recorded on-site shows the characteristics of contemporary Kangwon Sangkangrye. Following is a brief summary of this study. The review and comparison between Kangwon Sangkangrae in "Seokmunuibom" and the one being performed these days showed that the second type, which was significantly different from the first type, was closer to that of the historical record. The performers at Unmunsa Temple and Chungamsa Temple seemed to be following the tradition bell(小鐘) performance style which was found in the text of the historical record. Through the analysis on Kangwon Sangkangrae, I found that it has musical characteristics as follows. The vocal range of type 1 and type 2 was mostly performed within Minor 7th and didn't exceed the perfect 8th. The melodic structure of type 1 starts with do'-la of naedeureum and ended with the melody which downscaled from do' and finalized from mi to la. Usually the mode was in menari-tori but at some lecture halls a few cases found to be upscaled from sol to la which differentiates it from the typical menari-tori of folk songs. Like the typical way of traditional rites, the singing was divided into two parts: the leading call and the following choral response. Most were sung to be one syllable on one or two tones or one syllable lasting for several tones and the musical forms were varied by musical pieces. Meantime, Sangkangrae at Haeinsa Temple was differed from that of the other temples in terms of ritual procedure and vocal style. It added Korean version of and the lead vocal skipped the first phrase of the Sasul. The melodic structure of Type 2 started with do'-la of naedeureum and was finalized as the same way of Type 1. The mode of was not the same as typical menari-tori but the Jeongrye(prostration) and Balweon(a great vow) were identical to the menari-tori of folk songs. The singing was done in two forms, solo and unison, and the lyric-attachment of Gesong was one syllable for one or two tones and that of Jeongrye and Balweon were one syllable for one or two tones + one syllable for several tones. The musical form of Jeongrye is A-B-C and A-C. Balweon didn't display a certain periodicity but still maintained sense of unity and formality through repetition of the finalizing melody.

In this paper we present a method of separating musical instrument sound sources from their monaural mixture, where we take the harmonic structure of music into account and use the sparseness and the overlapping NMF [1] to select representative spectral basis vectors which are used to reconstruct unmixed sound. A method of spectral basis selection is illustrated and experimental results with monaural mixture of voice/cello and trumpet/viola are shown to confirm the validity of our proposed method.

A unified method for separating musical sources, singing voice for example, from stereophonic mixtures is provided. We usually have two observed signals in stereophonic music contents, where more than two instruments are played together. If we regard each instrument as source, this problem becomes an underdetermined source separation problem and cannot be solved by conventional methods, which infers the spatial environment of the downmixing process happens. Instead, source-specific information has been exploited to recover a particular instrumental source. This paper provides a unifying structure consists of heterogenious ad-hoc separate algorithms, which are designed for separating vocal sources using stereophonic channel information and dominant pitch information of the sources, respectively. Experiments on real world music contents show that the proposed unification can neutralize the drawbacks of the two ad-hoc separation algorithms and finally enhance the separation results.

An unsupervised (blind) method is proposed aiming at extracting rhythmic sources from commercial polyphonic music whose number of channels is limited to one. Commercial music signals are not usually provided with more than two channels while they often contain multiple instruments including singing voice. Therefore, instead of using conventional modeling of mixing environments or statistical characteristics, we should introduce other source-specific characteristics for separating or extracting sources in the under determined environments. In this paper, we concentrate on extracting rhythmic sources from the mixture with the other harmonic sources. An extension of nonnegative matrix factorization (NMF), which is called nonnegative matrix partial co-factorization (NMPCF), is used to analyze multiple relationships between spectral and temporal properties in the given input matrices. Moreover, temporal repeatability of the rhythmic sound sources is implicated as a common rhythmic property among segments of an input mixture signal. The proposed method shows acceptable, but not superior separation quality to referred prior knowledge-based drum source separation systems, but it has better applicability due to its blind manner in separation, for example, when there is no prior information or the target rhythmic source is irregular.
