  • After the establishment of the world's first design museum in London, design museums have - despite the criticism regarding commercialization and centralization - contributed to improving both the quality of life and the national competitiveness in establishing a design identity and promoting the excellence of design by preserving and cultivating the design industry. With the increase in the value of design in the cultural economy of the 21$^{st}$ century, the need for Korean design museums has been growing. Given this, the purpose of this study is to serve as a fundamental basis in introducing a new role and direction for future Korean design museums. In order to provide a foundation for such innovation, the evolved role and the promotional strategies of design museums are examined through the diachronic and synchronic approaches.

For that, it is an indispensable process to plan an archite-ctural environment and exhibition presentation suitable to the exhibition which are main objects of museum, but as a result of its being reglected by this time, it has been recog-nized as a tigid and formal place closed and estranged from the general public. The authoritarian aspect of museum resulted from its sys-tem negative to the people of our country, while its services have been developed as a place in which one understand a country most quicky. Recently, however, as a movement of participating in the newly changing general trend, the contest of design of the new National Museum was announced publicaly worldwide introducing the Museografia method of planning exhibition presentation after thorough analysis of exhibition, which made it known that an importance is intensely put on the en-vironment of relics and their exhibition. The purpose of the study is to analogize the planning prin-ciple of the interior design of the exhibition room of sculp-tures, placing emphasis on the exhibition presentation intro-ducing Museografia as a way of examining the problems and solving them concerning the existing standardized uni-form method of displaying exhibition. • In recent years, local governments are interested in constructing museums of various scales in relationship to unique factors of each region regarding their positive effects on tourist industry. However, many museums have failed to reflect regional characteristics resulting uniformed, uninteresting museum architectures. This study analyzes museum architectures designed by Ando Dadao, Antoine Predock's, Charles Correa, Carlo Scarpa, and Ricardo Legorrata based on 7 criterias of Kenneth Prampton's critical regionalism theory which are natural environment, materials, light, weather, unique culture, and history. It Is hoped that this study may serve as a stopping stone towards designing museums that reflect distinctive regional identities of Korea.

  • Fredrick Krause's chair in the Brooklyn Museum of Art (accession no. 87. 19) is a key to the understanding of factory-made, patent furniture, and the Modern Gothic style in the United States. However, research has rarely done for this chair as well as for the designer. Since this piece is incorporating the utility patent, it is a valuable example to understand the nineteenth-century patented furniture. Because of the popularity of Modern Gothic style, the similar style of chairs were often manufactured. This study explores how other examples are related and what the significance of the Brooklyn Museum chair is. The book of Sharon Darling provided especially helpful information about other Krause chairs in Fond du Lac and chair manufactures in Chicago. The interview with John Ebert at Galloway House in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin was especially helpful. Several primary sources proved helpful in researching the chair. The photo archives. of Kimbel and Cabus at the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum provides me a key to this research.

  • There are many ways to know the social and cultural level of each country. Among them, a museum are not only the best place to understand the history, the life style and the culture level. The most important constituent, which museum architecture has, are visitors, exhibition and communication between visitors. Exhibition space composition is the one of important things in museum architecture, and it's essential to show an intent of exhibition to visitors. This thesis has the purpose to provide the basic material through analyzing exhibition space composition and exhibition method of the theme museum and understanding the relativity of them so that the new theme museums can be designed in the Tight direction. So I chose the independence museum that opened within recent 10 years, finally middle & small size's theme museum were selected. The results from the case study are as follow. Firstly, the exhibition space unit of basic type and center-hall enter type had a one-way for gateway and used the exhibition of three or four faces. The exhibition space unit of around tile center-hall type and guidance type had the separated gateway and used the exhibition of one or two faces. Secondly, the exhibition method of selected museums was divided into the wall face type and the island type. The exhibition method of two faces mainly used in guidance type caused complicated visitor circulation. In that case, it seemed to be good that two walls were used alternately. Thirdly, there were visual type, audio-visual type, handling type and experiential type in the method of exhibition. The former two types were used mostly, and the latter two types were rarely used. Fourthly, the wall face type was inefficient for exhibition because given walls were supposed to be used. Therefore, it was more effective to use the wall face type and the island type together.
