  • We develope a assistant system of foot pressure distribution for improvement gait Pattern, adapted working speed, and minimitation of muscle fatigue of the sensory feedback type FES system(SEFES). This measurement system consist of mat type pressure sensor with piezo electric films. The pressure data signal multiflexed input scanning method processed A/D conversion after two step amplify and integrate. Matrix sensor interface to PC for pseudo color display by level of Pressure distribution data. This measurement system clinically evaluated in hemiplegic patients. It has produced acceptable results with optimal location of the food sensor's pressure point and avoid the muscle fatigue.

Evaluation of the Functional and Non-functional Seat Sponge Effect in Sitting Chairs

  • Objective: The purpose of this study was to evaluate comfort levels of functional and non-functional chairs using subjective comfort rating, interface pressure measurement, muscle activity measurement, and skin temperature measurement. Background: Chairs are used for a prolonged period of time for sitting in many places such as the office, at university, at school, in industry, and so on. Almost all people use chairs in their everyday life. The functional properties of the chair are associated with comfort. Method: The subjective evaluation contains questions regarding chair comfort which can be rated with five point scale. The body-seat interface pressure was measured using a pressure mat system. The symmetry of sitting was measured using electromyography. The change in body part (thigh and buttock) temperature before and after sitting on a chair was measured with an infrared camera. Results: Participants rated significantly (p < 0.05) higher comfort scores for the functional chair in relation to the buttock and thigh region. Also, the participants felt a better cushion effect in the functional chair. When using the functional chair, lower interface pressure, better thermal comfort, and better symmetry of erector spinae muscle activity were observed. Conclusion: Overall, interface pressure measurement, muscle activity measurement, thermal imaging and subjective comfort score results showed that the functional chair was more comfortable than the non-functional chair. Application: The adopted methodologies could be used to measure the seating comfort of train seats.

A Study of Sensing Locations for Self-fitness Clothing base on EMG Measurement (셀프 피트니스 의류 개발을 위한 근전도 센싱 위치 연구)

  • Recently, interest in monitoring health and sports is growing because of the emphasis on wellness, which is accelerating the development and commercialization of smart clothing for biosignal monitoring. In addition to exerciseeffect monitoring clothing that tracks heart rate and respiration, recently developed clothing makes it possible to monitor muscle balance using electromyogram (EMG). The electrode for EMG have to attached to an accurate location in order to obtain high-quality signals in surface EMG measurement. Therefore, this study develops monitoring clothing suitable for different types of human bodies and aims to extract suitable range of EMG according to movements in order to develop self-fitness monitoring clothing based on EMG measurement. This study identified and attached electrodes on six upper muscles and two lower muscles of ten males in their 20s. After selecting six main motions that create a load on muscles, the 8-ch wireless EMG system was used to measure amplitude value, noise, SNR and SNR (dB) in each part and statistical analysis was conducted using SPSS 20.0. As a result, the suitable range for EMG measurement to apply to clothing was identified as four parts in musculus pectoralis major; three parts in muscle rectus abdominis, two parts each in shoulder muscles, backbone erector, biceps brachii, triceps brachii, and musculus biceps femoris; and four part in quadriceps muscle of thigh. This was depicted diagrammatically on clothing, and the EMG-monitoring sensing locations were presented for development of self-fitness monitoring.

Effect of PNF Combination Patterns on Muscle Activity of the Lower Extremities and Gait Ability in Stroke Patients (PNF 결합패턴이 뇌졸중 환자의 하지 근 활성도 및 보행능력에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of present study was to determine effects of a PNF combination pattern training on muscle activity of lower extremities and gait ability in hemiparetic subjects. Twenty chronic stroke patients participated. Participants were randomly divided into either control group and experimental group. Experimental group received PNF combination pattern training, four times per a week for six weeks and control group received general exercise training. For the lower limbs muscle activity, RMS of action potential were analyzed and gait ability tests was conducted with 10MWT, DGI and F8WT. For the significance test of control and experimental group for measuring time by exercise application method, two-way repeated measure ANOVA. As the result, muscle activity of RF(p<.05), VM, TA, LH, LG was significantly increased between measurement period(p<.001), In VM, TA, LH, LG, there were interactions each measurement time and between group. 10MWT, DGI, F8WT in gait ability was significantly improved between measurement periods(p<.001) and In 10MWT, DGI, F8W, there were interaction each measurement time and between group. In conclusion, the PNF combination pattern application will be effective strategy to increasing the muscle activity and improving gait ability in the rehabilitation of stroke patients.

A Study on the Measurement of Back Muscle Fatigue During Dynamic Contraction Using Multiple Parameters (다중 파라메터를 이용한 동적 수축시 허리 근육 피로 측정에 관한 연구)

  • The fatigue of back muscle in the repetitive lifting motion was studied using multiple parameters(FFT_MDF, RMS, 2C, NT) in this study. Recent developments in the time-frequency analysis procedures to compute the IMDF(instantaneous median frequency) were utilized to overcome the nonstationarity of EMG signal using Cohen-Posch distribution. But the above method has a lot of computation time because of its complexity. So, in this study, FFT_MDF(median frequency estimation based on FFT) algorithm was used for median frequency estimation of back muscle EMG signal during muscle work in uniform velocity portion of lumbar movement. The analysis period of EMG signal was determined by using the run test and lumbar movement angle in dynamic task, such as lifting. Results showed that FFT_MDF algorithm is well suited for the estimation of back muscle fatigue from the view point of computation time. The negative slope of a regression line fitted to the median frequency values of back muscle EMG signal was taken as an indication of muscle fatigue. The slope of muscle fatigueness with FFT_MDF method shows the similarity of 77.8% comparing with CP_MDF(median frequency estimation based on Cohen Posch distribution) method.

The Effects of Foot Placement and Lifting on Lower Extremity Muscle Activity and Foot Pressure During Sit to Stand in Hemiparetic Patients (뇌졸중 환자의 물건 들고 일어서기 동작이 하지근 활동도 및 족저압에 미치는 영향)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of foot position and lifting an object on muscle activity and foot pressure during sit to stand(STS) in hemiparetic patients. Methods: Fourteen patients participated in this study. Surface electromyography was used to collect muscle activity and foot pressure measurement system was used to analyze foot pressure in hemiparetic side. Three different foot position was assumed(anterior, neutral, posterior) in hemiparetic side. The repeated two-way analysis of variance and multiple comparisons were conducted to determine statistical significance with a significance level of 0.05. Results: The results were as follows. 1) Lower extremity muscle activity was significantly higher(p<0.05) in biceps femoris and tibialis anterior muscle during STS without holding an object. With changing positions of the affected foot, muscle activity was significantly increased (p<0.05) in vastus medialis and lateral gastrocnemius when the foot was positioned in posterior. 2) There was no significant difference(p>0.05) in foot pressure during STS with object holding and foot positioning. Conclusion: Muscle activity showed a significant increase when the foot was positioned in posterior in comparison to the muscle activity when the foot was in neutral or anterior position.

Change of Isometric Contractile Force and Muscle Activity Applying Heat according to the Time on Biceps Brachii Muscle

  • This study has investigated the effect of isometric contractile force and muscle activity applying sperficial heat according to the time from the biceps brachii muscle. In this study, 20 university students participants without musculoskeletal and neurological disorders. By applying a hot pack 5min, 10min, 20min and 30min respectively. After that measurement are skin temperature, contractile force and muscle activity. Skin temperature of the hot 5 min applied that rapidly changing. Increasing the time it takes to apply a variance has been reduced(p<.001). Isometric contractile force was not statistically significant but highest when applying the hot pack 5 minutes and lowest when applying the hot pack 30 minutes(p<.001). Muscle activity and median frequency was highest when applying the hot pack 5 minutes. To analyze the above results, it was found that isometric contractile force and muscle activity changed according to the applying time. These result lead us to the conclusion that this study will be more evidence for changes in muscle contraction to apply hot pack on clinic.

The Effect of Keyboard Height on the Muscle Activity of the Upper Trapezius Muscle

  • This study is designed to reduce worker fatigue, improve efficiency and provide a functional working environment based on previous studies that pain occurs in the shoulder area, especially the upper trapezius muscle, when the keyboard height is not appropriate. In this study, the height of the keyboard is four, the height of the elbow and desk is the same height, the height of the desk is 3cm lower than the elbow, the height of the desk is 6cm high, and the height is 9cm high. When working on the keyboard, the wrist and forerunner were organized into four groups of 10 people so that the height was different for each group. When the height of the keyboard is given in various ways compared to the height of the elbow of the subject, it is verified whether there is a difference in the RMS (Root Mean Square) of the upper trapezius muscle. The results of this study showed that the muscle activity of the upper trapezius muscle cap was significant only in the left and right keyboard height -4cm, 0cm, +4cm, +8cm group, but the difference in muscle activity was not significant in the rest group. The first study will require a study of the control of the factors affecting the tension of the subjects, the measurement of muscle activity against various muscles, and whether the length of the shoulder and fingertips of the subject affect muscle activity according to the keyboard type.

Changes in Muscle Activity and Thickness of Resistance Exercise added Aerobic Exercise and Pure Resistance Exercise (유산소 병행 운동과 순수 저항 운동의 근활성도 및 근 두께의 변화)

  • This study aims to compare the effects of pure resistance exercise and resistance exercise added aerobic exercise for enhancing muscle strength of the femoral region and provide the evidentiary materials of an exercise program for improving muscle strength in clinical setting. Muscle activity of rectus femoris showed statistically significant differences after experiment compared to before experiment in the two groups and resistance exercise added aerobic exercise group showed statistically significant difference compared to pure resistance exercise group in group comparison according to the period of measurement. Thickness of rectus femoris showed no significant difference after experiment compared to before experiment in both groups, but resistance exercise added aerobic exercise group showed statistically significant difference after experiment compared to before experiment in group comparison according to the period of measurement. In conclusion, it was found that aerobic exercise after resistance exercise was more effective in enhancing muscle activity and thickness than pure resistance exercise for enhancing muscle activity.

Effect of Visual Feedback Squat Motion on Core Muscles Thickness of Young People with Lower Back Pain

  • Purpose: This study examined the effect of visual feedback squat on the core muscle thickness of young adults experiencing back pain. Methods: Thirty adult men and women who experienced back pain were assigned randomly to 15 members of the visual feedback squat group (VSG) and 15 of the normal squat group (NSG) to train three times a week for a total of eight weeks. The core muscle thickness was compared prior to the test for four weeks and eight weeks after the test by dividing it into warm-up exercise, main exercise, and 10 minutes finishing exercise. Before, and four weeks and eight weeks later, the thickness of the core muscle was compared using an ultrasonic imaging system. Repeated measured ANOVA was performed to compare the groups, and a Bonferroni test was performed as a post-hoc test to assess the significance of the timing of the measurements in each group according to the periods. An independent t-test was conducted to test the significance between the groups according to the measurement points. Results: A significant change in the main effects of time and interactions of the time difference in muscle thickness of transvers abdominis were observed between the visual feedback squat and control groups according to the measurement point (p<0.05). No significant difference in the muscle thickness of both muscles was observed between the groups with the exception of the right abdominis (p>0.05). Conclusion: These findings suggest that visual feedback squat exercise is expected to have positive effects on the development of transverse abdominis in core muscles.
