Carcass Characteristics and Chemical Composition of the Longissimus Muscle of Nellore, Caracu and Holstein-friesian Bulls Finished in a Feedlot

  • This work was carried out to study the carcass characteristics, the chemical composition and the fatty acid profile in Longissimus muscle (LM) of bull breeds Nellore, NEL (11), Caracu, CAR (12) and Holstein-Friesian, HFR (12) finished in a feedlot. The bulls were fed twice a day with corn silage, cotton meal, cracked corn, urea, limestone and mineral salt. NEL and CAR bulls had similar (p>0.05) final weight and hot carcass weight. However, NEL and CAR bulls had higher (p<0.05) final weight and hot carcass weight than HFR bulls. Carcass hot dressing, carcass conformation, cushion thickness, Longissimus muscle area and texture were similar (p>0.05) among NEL, CAR and HFR bulls. NEL and HFR bulls had higher (p<0.05) carcass length in comparison to the CAR breed. Nellore breed had higher (p<0.05) leg length in comparison to CAR and HFR breeds. Leg length was similar (p>0.05) between CAR and HFR breeds. Thickness fat, color and marbling score were lower (p<0.05) in NEL breed in comparison to CAR and HFR breeds. LM of NEL bulls had higher (p<0.05) meat moisture content in comparison to CAR and HFR bulls. In contrast, lipid content was lower (p<0.10) in HFR bulls. LM ash and crude protein contents were similar (p>0.05) among breeds. Saturated fatty acids (SFA) were higher (p<0.10) in HFR animals. Monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA), polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), n-6, n-3 and PUFA/SFA ratio were similar (p>0.05) among the different breeds. N-6/n-3 ratio was higher (p<0.05) in CAR animals.

천장관절 가동술이 하지 근력에 미치는 영향 (The Influence of Sacroiliac Joint Mobilization on Lower Extremity Muscle Strength)

  • Purpose : The purpose of this study was to evaluate influence of sacroiliac joint mobilization on lower extremity muscle strength. Methods : The subjects were consisted of thirty patients who had Leg length inequality(LLI) of more than 10mm(16 females. 14 males) from 21 to 41 years of age(mean aged 24.87). All subjects randomly assigned to sacroiliac joint mobilization group(n=15), control group(n=15). sacroiliac joint mobilization group received sacroiliac joint mobilization about 10 minutes for 3 times per week during 4 weeks period. Control group not received intervention during 4 weeks period. The tape measure method(TMM) was used to measure functional Leg length inequality. Biodex System 3 Pro was used to measure strength of Knee extension & flexion. All measurements of each subjects were measured at pre-test, 2weeks post-test and 4weeks post-test. Results : 1. The LLI of sacroiliac joint mobilization group was significantly reduced according to within treatment period(p<.05), most significantly reduced between pre-test and post-test(p<.05). sacroiliac joint mobilization group significantly more reduced than control group(p<.05). 2. The knee extension strength of sacroiliac joint mobilization group was significantly increased according to within treatment period(p<.05), most significantly increased between pre-test and post-test(p<.05). sacroiliac joint mobilization group significantly more increased than control group(p<.05). 3. The knee flexion strength of sacroiliac joint mobilization group was significantly increased according to within treatment period(p<.05), most significantly increased between pre-test and post-test(p<.05). sacroiliac joint mobilization group significantly more increased than control group(p<.05). Conclusion : sacroiliac joint mobilization can reduce LLI and increased lower extremity muscle strength.

Effect of Deer Antler Extract on Muscle Differentiation and 5-Aminoimidazole-4-Carboxamide Ribonucleoside (AICAR)-Induced Muscle Atrophy in C2C12 Cells

  • The effect of deer antler extract on muscle differentiation and muscle atrophy were evaluated to minimize muscle loss following aging. Various deer antler extracts (HWE, hot water extract of deer antler; FE, HWE of fermented deer antler; ET, enzyme-assisted extract of deer antler; UE, extract prepared by ultrasonication of deer antler) were evaluated for their effect on muscle differentiation and inhibition of 5-aminoimidazole-4-carboxamide ribonucleoside (AICAR)-induced muscle atrophy in C2C12 cells. Morphological changes according to the effect of antler extracts on muscle differentiation were confirmed by Jenner-Giemsa staining. In addition, the expression levels of genes related to muscle differentiation and atrophy were confirmed through qRT-PCR. In the presence of antler extracts, the length and thickness of myotubes and myogenin differentiation 1 (MyoD1) and myogenic factor 5 (Myf5) gene expression were increased compared to those in the control group (CON). Gene expression of AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK), MyoD1, and myogenin, along with the muscle atrophy factors muscle RING finger-1 (MuRF-1) and forkhead box O3a (FoxO3a) upon addition of deer antler extracts to muscle-atrophied C2C12 cells was determined by qRT-PCR after treatment with AICAR. The expression of MuRF-1 and FoxO3a decreased in the groups treated with antler extracts compared to that in the group treated with AICAR alone. In addition, gene expression of MyoD1 and myogenin in the muscle atrophy cell model was significantly increased compared that into the CON. Therefore, our findings indicate that antler extract can increase the expression of MyoD1, Myf5 and myogenin, inhibit muscle atrophy, and promote muscle differentiation.

  • A structure of musculotendon model with a fatigue profile is investigated. The Hill-type musculotendon model can predicts the decline in muscle force for a given fatigue profile. It consists of nonlinear activation and contraction dynamics based on the physiological concepts. It is normalized for generalization to deal with the various muscles. Muscle force generated by continuous tetanic electrical monophasic pulsewidth modulation stimulation is decreased in time. A fatigue profile is expressed by a function of intramuscular acidification and applied to the relationship between muscle force and shortening velocity in contraction dynamics. The results of computer simulation are well matched with data in a literature which are isometrically performed for knee extension muscles. Also change in optimal fiber length has an effect only on muscle time, constant not on the steady-state tetanic force.

Comparison of Muscle Performance of the Lumbar Region and Head Alignment According to the Length of Sitting Time

  • Purpose: This study aimed to verify the impact of the time that the sitting posture is maintained on changes in muscle performance and head alignment. Methods: The subjects of this study were healthy adults aged between 20 and 30 years. Ninety-three subjects participated in this study (male: 57, female: 36). The subjects were divided into a one-hour group, a two-hour group, and a three-hour group. All the subjects adjusted the height of their chair to a comfortable position and then seat for one, two, or over three hours. Both prior to and after the experiment, the muscle performance (muscle strength, endurance, and flexibility) of the subjects was measured. Results: In the 2-hours and 3-hour group, muscle strength, flexibility and endurance reduced significantly before and after the study, and the head alignment significantly changed. Conclusion: Thease findings showed that sitting continuously for longer than two hours decreases muscle strength, endurance, and flexibility. A flexed posture affects the muscle performance of the lumbar region and may result in problematic postures, such as a forward head position.

정형외과 수술환자의 대퇴길이 압박스타킹 착용 불편감 (Discomfort on Wearing Thigh-Length Compression Stockings in Orthopedic Surgical Patients)

  • Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the degree of discomfort and to identify factors related with discomfort in patients wearing thigh-length compression stockings after orthopedic surgery. Methods: The participants were 105 patients wearing thigh-length compression stockings after orthopedic surgery at two hospitals in B city. Data were collected by the scale of discomfort in wearing compression stockings from July 5 to October 20, 2011. Results: Mean score of discomfort on wearing compression stockings was significantly higher at post-op. day 3 than day 1 (t=-2.30, p=.004). Discomfort scores for 'itching skin' and 'tightened leg' items were higher than others. There was significant difference in discomfort at post-op. day 1 according to surgical regions. The total score of discomfort at post-op. day 3 was positively related with the body mass index (r=.20, p=.041). Conclusion: Wearing thigh-length compression stockings to prevent deep vein thrombosis may cause physical and psychological discomfort for orthopedic surgical patients. To reduce discomfort in wearing compression stockings, nurses need to intervene discomfort and problems related to the stockings post-operatively.

3가지의 운동프로그램이 작은가슴근의 길이와 머리전방자세에 미치는 영향 (Effects of Three Exercise Programs on the Length of Pectoralis Minor and Forward Head Posture)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of three exercise programs on forward head posture. Methods: Ninety-five individuals were recruited to assess the of the pectoralis minor muscle. Of these, 36 individuals with pectoralis minor muscles were selected and randomly divided into three groups: a functional massage group, a stretching group, and a stretching and muscle strengthening group. The exercise program consisted of sessions four times per week for two weeks. The length of pectoralis minor and the activity of the trapezius muscles were measured using electromyography. Forward head posture was assessed using the craniovertebral angle (CVA) and the cranial rotation angle (CRA) pre-, during and post-treatment. Result: Significant improvements were observed in pectoralis minor length, CRA, and CVA post-treatment in all groups (p<0.05, p<0.01, p<0.001). However, only the activity of the lower trapezius demonstrated a statistically significant difference post-treatment. There were no significant differences between the groups. Conclusion: The findings of this study suggest that all three exercise programs were effective in improving forward head posture and the length of pectoralis minor post-treatment.

만성 뇌졸중 환자에서 발목관절 각도에 따른 근 수축이 내측 비복근의 근 구조에 미치는 영향 (The Effect of Muscle Activity on Muscle Architectural of Medial Gastrocnemius in Chronic Stroke Patient Based on Ankle Joint Degree)

  • 본 연구의 목적은 만성 뇌졸중 환자에서 발목관절 각도에 따른 근 수축이 내측 비복근의 근 구조에 미치는 영향에 대해 알아보고자 하였다. 연구대상은 MAS(modified Ashworth scale) 2등급인 만성 뇌졸중 환자 10명을 대상으로 하였다. 근육 두께, 우모각, 근섬유속 길이, 최대 수의적 등척성 수축력(MVIC) 측정은 초음파 영상 촬영장치와 동력계로 이완 시(resting)와 최대 수의적 등척성 수축 시를 측정하였다. 측정결과, 근육 두께는 마비측이 정상측에 비해 유의하게 얇은 것으로 나타났고(p<.001), 발목이 저측굴곡 될수록 얇아짐을 알 수 있었다. MVIC에서는 이완 시보다 근육 두께가 유의하게 얇아지는 것을 알 수 있었다(p<.001). 우모각은 마비측이 정상측에 비해 유의하게 작은 것으로 나타났고(p<.001), 발목이 저측굴곡 될수록 커짐을 알 수 있었다. MVIC에는 이완 시보다 우모각이 유의하게 커짐을 알 수 있었다(p<.001). 근섬유속 길이는 마비측이 정상측보다 유의하게 짧은 것으로 나타났고(p<.001), 발목이 저측굴곡 될수록 짧아짐을 알 수 있었다. MVIC에는 이완 시보다 근섬유속 길이가 유의하게 짧아지는 것을 알 수 있었다(p<.001). 본 연구를 통해 만성 뇌졸중 환자에서 발목 각도에 따른 근 수축이 내측 비복근의 근 구조에 영향을 미치는 것을 알 수 있었다. 따라서, 만성 뇌졸중 환자의 영상구조적 특성을 평가하는 것은 임상적 진단과 치료에 매우 유용한 자료라 생각된다.

진구성 상완 신경총 마비에 대한 유리박근이식술 (Gracilis Muscle Transplantation in Neglected Brachial Plexus Palsy)

  • Complete denervation after severe brachial plexus injury make significant muscle atrophy with loss of proper function. It is much helpful to reconstruct the essential function of the elbow flexion movement in patient with total loss of elbow flexion motion after brachial plexus lesion which was not recovered with nerve surgery or long term conservative treatment from onset. In whole arm type brachial plexus injury, if there were no response to neurotization or neglected from injury, the volume of the denervated muscle is significantely reduced month by month. About 18 months most of the muscle fibers change to fibrous tissues and markedly atrophied irreversibly, further waiting is no more meaningful from that period. Authors performed 14 cases of functioning gracilis muscle transfer from 1981 to 1995 with microneurovascular technique, neuromusculocutaneous free flaps were performed for reconstruction of lost elbow flexion function. Average follow-up period was 5 years and 6 months. We used couple of intercostal nerves as a recipient nerve which were anastomosed to muscular nerve from obturator nerve in all cases. Recipient vessels were three deep brachial artery and eleven brachial artery which were anastomosed to medial femoral circumflex artery with end to end or end to side fashion. Average resting length of the transplanted gracilis were 24 cm. We can get average 54 degree flexion range of elbow with fair muscle power from flail elbow. There were one case of muscle necrosis with lately developed thrombosis of microvascular anastomosed site which comes from insufficient recipient arterial condition, 3 cases of partial marginal necrosis of distal skin of the transplanted part which were not significant problem with spontaneously solved with time goes by gracilis muscle has constant neurovascular pattern with relatively easy harvesting donor with minimal donor morbidity. Especially it has similar length and shape with biceps brachii muscle of upper arm and longer nerve pedicle which can neurorrhaphy with intercostal nerve without nerve graft if sufficient mobilization of the nerves from both sides of gracilis and intercostal region. Authors can propose gracilis muscle transplantation with intercostal nerves neurotization is helpful method with minimal donor morbidity for neglected brachial plexus palsy patients.

신발 착용 유무에 따른 20대 성인의 동적 균형 및 다리의 근활성도 변화 비교 (Comparison of Changes in Dynamic Balance and Leg Muscle Activity in Adults in Their 20s With or Without Shoes)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the difference in the dynamic balance and leg muscle activity of adults in their 20s with or without shoes. Methods: In this study, seven male and 11 female university students in their 20s were randomized to determine the order of being with or without shoes, and the dominant foot was supported on the central platform of dynamic balance according to the order procedure. Using the opposite foot, the distance of leg stretching in the anterior, posterior medial, and posterior lateral directions and the muscle activity of the supporting leg were measured. Muscle activity measurement sites were attached to the dominant vastus medialis oblique muscle, vastus lateral oblique muscle, tibialis anterior muscle, peroneus longus muscle, and lateral gastrocnemius muscle. Results: As a result of this study, the distance of leg stretching was significantly increased in the anterior, posterior medial, and posterior lateral directions when barefoot rather than when wearing shoes (p < 0.05). The muscle activity of the vastus medial and lateral oblique muscles was significantly increased in all three directions when barefoot rather than when wearing shoes (p < 0.05). The muscle activity of the tibialis anterior was significantly increased in the anterior direction when barefoot (p < 0.05), the peroneus longus muscle was significantly increased when it was barefoot in the posterior medial direction (p < 0.05), and the lateral gastrocnemius muscle activity significantly increased when barefoot in the posterior direction (p < 0.05). Conclusion: The movement of the legs is freed when barefoot as compared to when wearing shoes, and being barefoot can effectively activate muscle activity and improve balance ability.
