  • Conceptual system design of a multistage centrifugal air-compressor is the first loop of design procedure. The properly designed system is important for compactness, low manufacturing cost, easy controllability, fast extension for the new specification of the compressor. A simple procedure of conceptual system design is proposed in the present study using simple analysis. A few examples of the procedure for a real system are shown and several design aspects are discussed.

  • A practical method of surge simulation in a system of a high-pressure-ratio multistage axial flow compressor and ducts, named SRGTRAN, is described about the principal procedures and the details. The code is constructed on the basis of one-dimensional stage-by-stage modeling and application of fundamental equations of mass, momentum, and energy. An example of analytical result on surge behaviors is included as an experimental verification. It will enable to examine the transient flow phenomena caused by possible compressor surges and their influences on the system components in plant systems including high-pressure-ratio axial compressors or gas turbines.

  • A method to search the design parameters for optimum stage matching has been used based on a 1-D mathematical model of a compressor, which uses the data obtained from the preliminary test to identify the design parameters. This methodology was applied with a two-stage axial compressor, which was originally designed for a helicopter gas turbine engine. After Identifying design parameters using preliminary test data, an optimization process has been employed to achieve the best matching between the stages (i.e., maximum efficiency of the compressor at its operation modes within a given range of the rotor speed under given restrictions for required stall margins and mass flow). 3-D flow calculations have been performed to confirm the usefulness of the corrections based on 1-D mathematical model. Calculational results agree well with the experimental data in view of the performance characteristics. Some promising results were produced through the methodology proposed in this paper in conjunction with flow calculations.

  • In developing a multistage compressor, the stage matching is one of the critical design issues. The mismatching can be often observed even if each stage has been proven good and then used as part of a compression system. A good matching among the stages can be achieved by changing various design parameters (i.e., passage cross sectional areas, blades angles, stagger angles, curvature, solidity, etc.). Therefore, designers need to find out what parameters must be changed and how much. In this study, a method to search the design parameters for optimum stage matching has been used based on an 1-D mathematical model of a compressor, which uses the data obtained from the preliminary test to identify the design parameters. This methodology is applied with a two-stage axial compressor, which was originally designed for a helicopter gas turbine engine. • The flow through multistage turbomachinery is affected by the interaction between a rotor and a stator. The interaction is due to the inviscid potential effect and viscous effect between closely spaced rotor and stator airfoils. Three-dimensional, unsteady, incompressible Navier-Stokes equations with a standard $k-{\epsilon}$ model are solved using a non-staggered grid system. This method is applied to the flow through a multistage compressor measured by Stauter et al. The results have shown strong interaction between the rotating and stationary flow field. The decay of rotor wake and the pressure profiles agree very well with experimental data. The wake produced by rotor causes unsteady pressure on the surface of a stator. The rotor/stator interaction produces the unsteady pressure force on the rotor and stator blades.

  • This paper presents roughness effects on flow characteristics and efficiency of multi-stage axial compressor using numerical simulation. which is carried out with a commercially available software, CFX-TASCflow. In this paper, the third of four stages of GE low pressure compressor is considered including me stator and rue rotor. Mixing-plane approach is adopted to model the interface between the stator and the rotor: it is appropriate for steady state simulation. First, a flat plate simulation was performed to validate how exact the numerical simulation predicts the roughness effect for smooth and rough walls. Then GE compressor model was calculated about at each roughness height. Concluding, very small roughness height largely affects the performance of compressor and the increasing rate of loss decrease as roughness height increase.

  • In this paper are presented the blade vibration characteristics at the starting conditions of the low pressure multistage axial compressor of heavy-duty 100 MW gas turbine. Vibration data have been collected through strain gauges during aerodynamic tests of the model compressor. The influences of operating modes at the starting conditions are investigated upon the compressor blade vibrations. The exciting mechanisms and features of blade vibrations are investigated at the surge, rotating stall, and buffeting flutter. The influences of operating modes upon blade dynamic stresses are investigated for the first and second stages. It is shown that a high dynamic stress peak of 120 MPa can occur in the first stage blades due to resonances with stall cell excitations or with inlet strut wake excitations at the stalled conditions.

  • The purpose of the present study was to develop the numerical method for predicting the on-design and off-design performance of multistage axial-flow compressors. The aerodynamic properties in blade rows were analyzed by incorporating the streamline curvature method as a quasi 3D analysis with the imperical modeling of exit flow angle and loss coefficients. The present calculation procedure has been tested by applying to 5-stage compressors and good agreement with experiments has been found. The detail analysis of aerodynamic performances has been done on the compression part of the bench-scaled gas turbine engines. The predicted performance map at the variable speedline and flow rates could be used as a guide of the engine operation.

  • Axial-flow compressor is one of the most important parts of gas turbine units with axial turbine and combustor. Therefore, precise prediction of performance is very important for development of new compressor or modification of existing one. Meanline analysis is a simple, fast and powerful method for performance prediction of axial-flow compressors with different geometries. So, Meanline analysis is frequently used in preliminary design stage and performance analysis for given geometry data. Much correlations for meanline analysis have been developed theoretically and experimentally for estimating various types of losses and flow deviation angle for long time. In present study, meanline analysis program was developed to estimate compressor losses, incidence angles, deviation angles, stall and surge conditions with many correlations. Performance prediction of one stage axial compressors is conducted with this meanline analysis program. The comparison between experimental and numerical results show a good agreement. This meanline analysis program can be used for various types of single stage axial-flow compressors with different geometries, as well as multistage axial-flow compressors.

  • Computational grids used in the numerical simulation of multi staged turbomachinery flow fields are generated. A multiblock structure simplifies the creation of structured H-grids about complex turbomachinery geometries and facilitate the creation of a grid for multi-row topologies. The numerical algorithm adopts the combination of the algebraic and elliptic method to create the internal grids efficiently and quickly. The input module is made of the results of the preliminary design, i.e., flow-path, aerodynamic conditions along the spanwise direction, and the blade profile data. The final grids generated from each module of the system are used as the preprocessor for the performance prediction of the single row cascades and the flow simulation inside the multi staegd blade passage. Application to low pressure compressor of industrial gas turbine engines was demonstrated to be very reliable and practical in support of design activities.
