  • On large-scale sites, concrete is often delivered from a number of ready-mixed concrete companies, but even if the same concrete mixture table is used, it is thought that there will be a difference in quality due to differences in materials and manufacturing equipment. Due to a lack of previous research in this area, this study measured the properties of fresh concrete, compressive strength, and chlorine ion diffusion coefficient using the concrete supplied by 12 ready-mixed companies in Busan. The fresh concrete properties met the criteria. The compressive strength increased by 137% for 30MPa, 131% for 45MPa, and 117% for 80MPa by specified compressive strength. For the chlorine ion diffusion coefficient, the average value for each specified compressive strength could be derived without significant variation. The higher the compressive strength, the greater the deviation , and the lower the compressive strength, the greater the deviation in the chlorine ion diffusion coefficient.

  • The adsorption capacity of bone char for lead, cadmium and zinc was studied in both single and binary multiple component systems. Equilibrium experimental studies have been performed to determine the sorption capacity of bone char for each metal ion. These have been analysed using single and multi-component equilibrum models. The results show that the sorption of metal ions for multi-component systems can be predicted reasonably well from the IAS theory with the Langmuir equation, the Freundlich and the Slip equation for metal ions.

  • Transient receptor potential (TRP) channels comprise a diverse family of ion channels, the majority of which are calcium permeable and show sophisticated regulatory patterns in response to various environmental cues. Early studies led to the recognition of TRP channels as environmental and chemical sensors. Later studies revealed that TRP channels mediated the regulation of intracellular calcium. Mutations in TRP channel genes result in abnormal regulation of TRP channel function or expression, and interfere with normal spatial and temporal patterns of intracellular local Ca2+ distribution. The resulting dysregulation of multiple downstream effectors, depending on Ca2+ homeostasis, is associated with hallmarks of cancer pathophysiology, including enhanced proliferation, survival and invasion of cancer cells. These findings indicate that TRP channels affect multiple events that control cellular fate and play a key role in cancer progression. This review discusses the accumulating evidence supporting the role of TRP channels in tumorigenesis, with emphasis on prostate cancer.

  • Performance variations in mixture products such as medicine, food, and chemicals can be caused by their own subcomponents. For instance, a discharge capacity of a lithium-ion battery depends upon the mixture ratio of ethylene, dimethyle, and ethyle-methyle, all of which are subcomponents of an electrolyte solution in the battery. Thus it is crucial to determine tolerances of the mixture ratio in order to maintain the product quality at a desired level. This paper is concerned with the tolerance design of the mixture ratio. In particular, minimizing variance around the mixture ratio is adopted as a decision criterion in this paper. An illustrative example with multiple quality characteristics is given as well.

  • P2X receptors are ATP-activated ion channels in the plasma membrane. P2X receptors have a role in a diverse range of disorders, making them a valuable therapeutic target. Hence, the present investigation employed homology modelling of the P2X receptor based on the crystal structure of 5SVJ, 6AH4, 5YVE and 5SVL. Twenty models, using both single- and multiple template-based methods, were developed, and the best model was chosen based on the validation result. We observed that a strategy based on multiple templates provided greater accuracy. Future studies involving binding site and docking analysis can make use of the produced structures.

  • Somatic embryogendesis is one of good examples of the basic research for plant embryo development as well as an important technique for plant biotechnology. This paper describes the direct somatic embryogenesis from zygotic embryos of Panax ginseng is reversely related to normal axis growth of zygotic embryos by the experiment of various chemical treatments. Under the normal growth condition, the apical tips of embryo axis produced an agar-diffusible substance, which suppressed somatic embryo development from cotyledons. Although the cells of zygotic embryos were released from the restraint of embryo axis, various factors were still involved for somatic embryo development. Electron microscopic observation revealed that the ultrastructure of cells of cotyledon epidermis markedly changed before initiation of embryonic cell division, probably indicating reprogramming events into the cells embryogenically determined state. Polar accumulation of endogenous auxin or cell-cell isolation by plasmolysis pre-treatment is the strong inducer for the somatic embryo development. The cells for the process of somatic embryogenesis might be determined by the physiological conditions fo explants and medium compositions. Direct somatic embryos from cotyledons fo ginseng were originated eithrer from single or multiple cells. The different cellular origin of somatic embryos was originated either from single or multiple cell. The different cellular origin of somatic embryos was depended on various developmental stages of cotyledons. Immature meristematic cotyledons produced multiple cell-derived somatic embryos, which developed into multiple embryos. While fully mature cotyledons produced single cell-derived single embryos with independent state. Plasmolysis pretreatment of cotyledons strongly enhanced single cell-derived somatic embryogenesis. Single embryos were converted into normal plantlets with shoot and roots, while multiple embryos were converted into only multiple shoots. GA3 or a chilling treatment was prerequisite for germination and plant conversion. Low concentration of ammonium ion in medium was necessary for balanced growth of root and shoot of plantlets. Therefore, using above procedures, successful plant regeneration of ginseng was accomplished through direct single embryogenesis, which makes it possible to produce genetically transformed ginseng efficently.

  • This paper proposes a highly power-efficient single-inductor multiple-outputs (SIMO) DC-DC converter with a gate charge sharing method in which gate charges of output switches are shared to improve the power efficiency and to reduce the switching power loss. The proposed converter was fabricated by using a $0.18{\mu}m$ CMOS process technology with high voltage devices of 5 V. The input voltage range of the converter is from 2.8 V to 4.2 V, which is based on a single cell lithium-ion battery, and the output voltages are 1.0 V, 1.2 V, 1.8 V, 2.5 V, and 3.3 V. Using the proposed gate charge sharing method, the maximum power efficiency is measured to be 87.2% at the total output current of 450 mA. The measured power efficiency improved by 2.1% compared with that of the SIMO DC-DC converter without the proposed gate charge sharing method.

  • A multiple solid-phase extraction (SPE) method was used with liquid chromatography, coupled with mass spectrometry (LC/MS), for the analysis of heterocyclic amines (HCAs) in human urine. Separation efficiencies based on the pH of the mobile phase and the types of columns were compared. An amide column showed better baseline separation and narrower HCA peak widths at pH 5.0 for the mobile phase than a $C_8$ column. Each SPE step, HLB, MCX, and HybridSPE, was optimized by controlling the pH conditions. The combined method with the three SPEs effectively removed interfering species that cause ion-suppression during HCA detection. Validation of the method, performed with SIM and SRM detection, showed correlation coefficients above 0.991 in the range 0.3 - 16.7 ng/mL. Recovery rates were 45.4 - 97.3% on the $C_8$ column and 71.8 - 101.4% on the amide column, and method detection limits were 0.11 - 0.65 ng/mL on the $C_8$ column and 0.12 - 0.48 ng/mL on the amide column. This method using multiple SPEs offers significant benefits for high-throughput determination of HCAs in urine.

  • To understand the hyrogeochemical variation of bedrock aquifer during underground space construction, various graphical methods including multiple-component plots and chemical trends were used to estimate the mixing rate between seawater and freshwater and to investigate the evolution of water quality. The water chemistry and mixing rate between fresh and sea waters, which are generally localized in the construction area (MW-7, in land), shows typical characteristics of freshwater that doesn’t affect its validity as seawater intrusion. Especially, the water chemistry of a MW-4 (coastline) was classified as Na-Cl type, Na-HCO3 type, and Ca-Cl type due to the influence of the seawater intrusion. And hydrogeochemical and isotopic data show that local freshwater is subjected to geochemical processes, such as reverse ion-exchange. Throughout the Chadha’s diagrams, four different case histories with the temporal and spatial variation of groundwaters in the study area were proposed, which is recommended to interpret the hydrogeochemical reactions effectively.
