Acer tegmentosum Maxim Prevents Bone Loss by Inhibiting Osteoclastogenesis and Promoting Osteoblast Mineralization in Ovariectomized Mice

  • Osteoporosis is a worldwide disease leading to significant economic and societal burdens globally. Osteoporosis is caused by unbalanced bone remodeling between the rate of osteoclast bone resorption and osteoblast bone formation. Acer tegmentosum Maxim (AT) is a traditional herbal medicine containing multiple biological activities such as anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory purposes. However, its role in osteoporosis has not been fully studied. Therefore, we investigated whether AT has a potent inhibitory effect on osteoporosis and its mechanism through a systemic evaluation in ovariectomized (OVX) mice. OVX mice were orally administrated with the AT at doses of 50, 100, and 200 mg/kg for 10 weeks. Histological images and histomorphometry analyses were performed by H&E and Toluidine blue satin, and the expression levels of receptor activator for nuclear factor-kB ligand (RANKL), nuclear factor of activated T cells cytoplasm 1 (NFATc1), c-Fos, and matrix metalloproteinase 9 (MMP9) related to the osteoclast differentiation were investigated using immunohistochemical analysis. Administration of AT prevented bone loss and the alternations of osteoporotic bone parameters at the distinct regions of the distal femur and spongiosa region in OVX mice. Further, administration of AT increased periosteal bone formation in a dose-dependent manner. Meanwhile, AT inhibited not only the expression of NFATc1 and c-Fos, which are two major regulators of osteoclastogenesis but also reduced bone resorbed encoding expression of MMP9 and RANKL. Our results indicated that administration of AT prevented bone loss and the alternations of osteoporotic bone parameters at the distinct regions of the distal femur and spongiosa region in OVX mice. Also AT has the bone protective effect through the suppression of osteoclast and promotion of osteoblast, suggesting that it could be a preventive and therapeutic candidate for anti-osteoporosis.

Development of relational river data model based on river network for multi-dimensional river information system (다차원 하천정보체계 구축을 위한 하천네트워크 기반 관계형 하천 데이터 모델 개발)

  • A vast amount of riverine spatial dataset have recently become available, which include hydrodynamic and morphological survey data by advanced instrumentations such as ADCP (Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler), transect measurements obtained through building various river basic plans, riverine environmental and ecological data, optical images using UAVs, river facilities like multi-purposed weir and hydrophilic sectors. In this regard, a standardized data model has been subsequently required in order to efficiently store, manage, and share riverine spatial dataset. Given that riverine spatial dataset such as river facility, transect measurement, time-varying observed data should be synthetically managed along specified river network, conventional data model showed a tendency to maintain them individually in a form of separate layer corresponding to each theme, which can miss their spatial relationship, thereby resulting in inefficiency to derive synthetic information. Moreover, the data model had to be significantly modified to ingest newly produced data and hampered efficient searches for specific conditions. To avoid such drawbacks for layer-based data model, this research proposed a relational data model in conjunction with river network which could be a backbone to relate additional spatial dataset such as flowline, river facility, transect measurement and surveyed dataset. The new data model contains flexibility to minimize changes of its structure when it deals with any multi-dimensional river data, and assigned reach code for multiple river segments delineated from a river. To realize the newly developed data model, Seom river was applied, where geographic informations related with national and local rivers are available.

A Study of the Obesity Index and Psychosocial Factors Influencing Obesity among Adolescent Girls (여고생들의 비만도 및 비만과 관련된 사회심리적 요인 분석)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the dietary intake, obesity index and psychosocial factors influencing obesity among 200 high school girls in Seoul. The Social Cognitive Theory provided the Conceptual basis for this study. A cross-sectional survey was conducted to examine factors related to obesity, including self-efficacy for controlling overeating, social support for eating behavior, perception of body image and weight control, nutrition knowledge, and attitudes toward obesity. The data were analyzed using t-test and multiple logistic regression. The results of this study are as follows : 1) The mean age of the girls was 16.4 years, and the rate of overweight and obesity(measured by obesity index) was 27.0$\%$. 2) The mean energy intake of subjects was 1832.3$\pm$384.0kcal. The energy derived from carbohydrates, proteins and fats was 62.7$\%$, 13.8$\%$, and 23.5$\%$, respectively. There was no significant difference between the obese and the comparison group in energy intake. 3) The result of multivariate analysis indicated that obesity had a significant relation to the perception of ideal body image, social support for eating behavior, and self-efficacy for controlling overeating(p〈0.01). As subjects preferred thinner body images(OR=0.39) and received less social support(OR=0.93), the odds of being classified as obese increased. The odds of being obese were also associated with self-efficacy, however, the relation was not strong(OR=1.04). 4) Specific social support was related to obesity among adolescent girls. As subjects received more support from family member, the odds of being obese decreased. The emotional support as well as family member's positive nutrition behavior plays a significant role. In addition, instrumental support from friends was associated with obesity. With repect to self-efficacy, the odds of being obese were increased as subjects felt less confident in controlling overeating when tempting food was placed in front of them or after an argument. In contrast, the obese group felt more confident in controlling overeating for the rest of the specific situations examined. These findings suggest that educational interventions for weight control should incorporate strategies to help participants realize their degree of obesity, to reduce the discrepancy between current and ideal body image, to elicit and maintain social support from friends and family, and to increase the self-efficacy for changing eating behaviors.   • This paper presents an internet-based self-learning educational system which can be enhancing efficiency in the learning process of Java language. The proposed self-learning educational system is called Java Web Player(JWP), which is a Java application program and is executable through Java Web Start technologies. Also, three important sequential learning processes : concept learning process, programming practice process and assessment process are integrated in the proposed JWP using Java Web Start technologies. This JWP enables the learners to achieve efficient and interesting self-learning since the learning process is designed to enhance the multimedia capabilities on the basis of various educational technologies. Furthermore, internet-based on-line voice presentation and its related texts together with moving images are synchronized for efficient language learning process. Also, a simple and useful Java compiler is included in the JWP for providing language practice environment such as coding, editing, executing and debugging Java source files. Finally, repeated practice can make the learners to understand easily the key concepts of Java language. Simple multiple choices are given suddenly to the learners while they are studying through the JWP and the test results are displayed on the message box. This assessment process is very essential to increase the learner's academic capability.

Optimization of Calcium Acetate Preparation from Littleneck Clam (Ruditapes philippinarum) Shell Powder and Its Properties (바지락(Ruditapes philippinarum) 패각분말로부터 초산칼슘 제조 및 특성)

  • The optimal condition for preparation of powdered calcium acetate (LCCA) which has high solubility, from calcined powder (LCCP) of the littleneck clam shell by response surface methodology (RSM) was examined. Increased molar ratio of LCCP led to reduced solubility, yield, color values, and overall quality. The critical values of multiple response optimization of independent variables were 2.57 M of acetic acid and 1.57 M of LCCP. The actual values (pH 7.0, 96.1% for solubility, and 220.9% for yield) under the optimized condition were similar to the predicted values. LCCA showed strong buffering capacity between pH 4.89 and 4.92 on addition of ~2 mL of 1 N HCl. The calcium content and solubility of LCCA were 21.9-23.0 g/100 g and 96.1-100.1%, respectively. The FT-IR and XRD patterns of LCCA were identified as calcium acetate monohydrate, and FESEM images revealed an irregular and rod-like microstructure.

  • As a part of the short-period variability survey (SPVS) at Bohyunsan Optical Astronomy Observatory, we obtained time-series BV CCD images in the region of Cyg OB3 association centered on the open cluster NGC 6871. The observations were performed for 18 nights from September 5, 2008 to September 1, 2009. We found 15 short-period variable stars in the region. They are ${\delta}$ Scuti type stars belonging to the local spiral arm, Orion spur. Among them, only two stars were previously known, and the rest are newly discovered ones. In this paper, we have performed a multiple-frequency analysis to determine frequencies of the 15 ${\delta}$ Scuti type stars, using the discrete Fourier transform and linear least-square fitting methods. One of the newly discovered variable stars is a double-mode ${\delta}$ Scuti type star with the fundamental and the first overtone modes, and two are high amplitude ${\delta}$ Scuti stars.

A Study on Mapping 3-D River Boundary Using the Spatial Information Datasets (공간정보를 이용한 3차원 하천 경계선 매핑에 관한 연구)

  • A river boundary is defined as the intersection between a main stream of a river and the land. Mapping of the river boundary is important for the protection of the properties in river areas, the prevention of flooding and the monitoring of the topographic changes in river areas. However, the utilization of the ground surveying technologies is not efficient for the mapping of the river boundary due to the irregular surfaces of river zones and the dynamic changes of water level of a river stream. Recently, the spatial information data sets such as the airborne LiDAR and aerial images are widely used for coastal mapping due to the acquisition of the topographic information without human accessibility. Due to these advantages, this research proposes a semi-automatic method for mapping of the river boundary using the spatial information data set such as the airborne LiDAR and the aerial photographs. Multiple image processing technologies such as the image segmentation algorithm and the edge detection algorithm are applied for the generation of the 3D river boundary using the aerial photographs and airborne topographic LiDAR data. Check points determined by the experienced expert are used for the measurement of the horizontal and vertical accuracy of the generated 3D river boundary. Statistical results show that the generated river boundary has a high accuracy in horizontal and vertical direction.

Evaluation of the Accuracy of IMERG at Multiple Temporal Scales (시간 해상도 변화에 따른 IMERG 정확도 평가)

  • The purpose of this study was the assessment of the accuracy of Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) Integrated Multi-Satellite Retrievals for GPM (IMERG), a rainfall data source derived from satellite images, for evaluation of its applicability to use in ungauged or inaccessible areas. The study area was the overall area of the Korean peninsula divided into six regions. Automated Surface Observing System (ASOS) rainfall data from the Korean Meteorological Administration and IMERG satellite rainfall were used. Their average correlation coefficient was 0.46 for a 1-h temporal resolution, and it increased to 0.69 for a 24-h temporal resolution. The IMERG data quantitatively estimated less than the rainfall totals from ground gauges, and the bias decreased as the temporal resolution was decreased. The correlation coefficients of the two rainfall events, which had relatively greater rainfall amounts, were 0.68 and 0.69 for a 1-h temporal resolution. Additionally, the spatial distributions of the ASOS and IMERG data were similar to each other. The study results showed that the IMERG data were very useful in the assessment of the hydro-meteorological characteristics of ungauged or inaccessible areas. In a future study, verification of the accuracy of satellite-derived rainfall data will be performed by expanding the analysis periods and applying various statistical techniques.

Anatomical Characteristics of the Mandibular Median Lingual Foramen: the Assessment of the CBCT (CBCT를 이용한 하악 정중설공의 해부학적 평가)

  • It is necessary to consider the median lingual foramen carefully to prevent the bleeding due to the damage of the sublingual artery for implant surgery. This study is to evaluate the frequency, location, diameter and the number of the Mandibular median lingual foramen regarding gender and age in the CBCT. Sixty two images of cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) whose visited the Chonnam National University Dental hospital from Sept. 2010 to Apr. 2011 were evaluated. Frequency, number, location and the diameter of Mandibular median lingual foramen shown in the CBCT image were evaluated. Sixty two patients (100%) had at least one median lingual foramen and fifty six patients (90.32%) had multiple foramens. Forty patients (66.13%) showed the median lingual foramen on the location between Mn. central incisors. The mean vertical position of the genial spine and the median lingual foramen was 24.21 mm and 14.52 mm, respectively. And the relative mean vertical dimension of median lingual foramen was 0.45. The mean diameter of the foramen was 0.93 mm. CBCT demonstrated the frequency, location, diameter and the number of median lingual foramen. It is necessary to take CBCT before implant placement to prevent the bleeding.

Qualitative Evaluation of 2D Dosimetry System for Helical Tomotherapy (2차원 토모테라피 선량측정시스템의 정성적 평가)

  • The purpose of this study is to see the feasibility of the newly developed 2D dosimetry system using phosphor screen for helical tomotherapy. The cylindrical water phantom was fabricated with phosphor screen to emit the visible light during irradiation. There are three types of virtual target, one is one spot target, another is C-shaped target, and the other is multiple targets. Each target was planned to be treated at 10 Gy by treatment planning system (TPS) of tomotherapy. The cylindrical phantom was placed on the tomotherapy table and irradiated as calculations of the TPS. Every frame which acquired by CCD camera was integrated and the doses were calculated in pixel by pixel. The dose distributions from the fluorescent images were compared with the calculated dose distribution from the TPS. The discrepancies were evaluated as gamma index for each treatment. The curve for dose rate versus pixel value was not saturated until 900 MU/min. The 2D dosimetry using the phosphor screen and the CCD camera is respected to be useful to verify the dose distribution of the tomotherapy if the linearity correction of the phosphor screen improved.
