An interactive and iterative design method based on the constraint satisfaction problem (CSP) technique was developed to generate an ergonomically sound layout of a control panel. This control panel layout method attempts to incorporate a variety of relevant ergonomic principles and design constraints, and generate an optimal or, at least, a "satisfactory" solution through iterative interactions with the designer. The existing panel design and layout methods are mostly based on the optimization of single objective function formulated to reflect and trade off all ergonomic design objectives which are largely different in their nature. In fact, the problem of seeking an ergonomically sound panel design should be viewed as a multiple objective optimization problem. Furthermore, most of the design objectives should be understood as constraints rather than objectives to be optimized. Hence, a constraint satisfaction approach is proposed in this study as a framework for the panel designer to search through the design decision space effectively and make various design decisions iteratively. In order to apply the constraint satisfaction approach to the panel design procedure, the ergonomic principles such as frequency-of-use, importance, functional grouping, and sequence-of-use are formalized as CSP terms. With this formalization, a prototype system was implemented and applied to panel layout problems. The results clearly showed the effectiveness of the proposed approach since it permits designers to consider and iteratively evaluate various design constraints and ergonomic principles, and, therefore, aids the panel designer to come up with an ergonomically sound control panel layout.

In this paper, an expert system is proposed, which can be effectively applied to the large-scale systems with the diversity time constraints, the objectives and the unfixed system structure. The inference scheme of the expert system have the integrated structure composed of the intuitive inference module and logical inference module in order to support effectively the operating constraints of system. The intuitive inference module is designed using the pattern matching or pattern recognition method in order to search a same or similar pattern under the fixed system structure. On the other hand, the logical inference module is designed as the structure with the multiple inference mode based on the heuristic search method in order to determine the optimal or near optimal control strategies satisfing the time constraints for system events under the unfixed system structure, and in order to use as knowledge generator. Here, inference mode consists of the best-first, the local-minimum tree, the breadth-iterative, the limited search width/time method. Finally, the application results for large-scale distribution SCADA system proves that the inference scheme of the expert system is very effective for the large-scale system. The expert system is implemented in C language for the dynamic mamory allocation method, database interface, compatability.

It is essential to satisfy class-specific QoS constraints to provide broadband services for new generation networks. The present study proposes a QoS-driven multicast scheme for wireless networks in which the transmission rate and end-to-end delay are assumed to be bounded during a multiple multicast session. A distributed algorithm was used to identify a cost-efficient sub-graph between the source and destination which can satisfy QoS constraints of a multicast session. The model was then modified as to be applied for wireless networks in which satisfying interference constraints is the main challenge. A discrete power control scheme was also applied for the QoS-aware multicast model to accommodate the effect of transmission power level based on link capacity requirements. We also proposed random power allocation (RPA) and gradient power allocation (GPA) algorithms to efficient resource distribution each of which has different time complexity and optimality levels. Experimental results confirm that the proposed power allocation techniques decrease the number of unavailable links between intermediate nodes in the sub-graph and considerably increase the chance of finding an optimal solution.
When multiple applications are running concurrently on a multi-processor system, interferences between applications make it difficult to guarantee real-time constraints. We propose a novel interference analysis technique that allows sharing of share processors among dataflow applications, while satisfying real-time constraints. Based on the interference analysis, we develop a co-scheduling technique that aims to minimize the resource usage. Compared to an existent technique that involves converting application graphs to real-time tasks, the proposed technique shows better results in terms of resource usage, especially when it is applied to applications with tight time constraints.

The adaptation of video according to the heterogeneous and dynamic resource constraints on networks and devices, as well as on user preferences, is a promising approach for universal access and consumption of video content. For optimal adaptation that satisfies the constraints while maximizing the utility that results from the adapted video, it is necessary to devise a systematic way of selecting an appropriate adaptation operation among multiple feasible choices. This paper presents a general conceptual framework that allows the formulation of various adaptations as constrained optimization problems by modeling the relations among feasible adaptation operations, constraints, and utilities. In particular, we present the feasibility of the framework by applying it to a use case of rate adaptation of MPEG-4 video with an explicit modeling of adaptation employing a combination of frame dropping and discrete cosine transform coefficient dropping, constraint, utility, and their mapping relations. Furthermore, we provide a description tool that describes the adaptation-constraint-utility relations as a functional form referred to as a utility function, which has been accepted as a part of the terminal and network quality of service tool in MPEG-21 Digital Item Adaptation (DIA).

This paper proposes controller of leader robot considering following robot with input constraints based on leader-following approach. In the previous formation control researches, it was assumed that leader and follower is same object. If leader robot drives as maximum speed that the initial position errors still remain even if following robot have same velocity as a leader. In the situation that velocity of following robot is lower than its leader robot, following robot cannot follow leader robot. Furthermore, the following robot will not be able to made formation with leader robot and keep proximity communication or sensing range. Therefore, multiple mobile robot system using leader-following method should be guaranteed range to get information each other. In this paper, Leader robot is driving to goal position using linear controller and following robot is following trajectory to be made from leader robot. We assume that following robot has input constraints to realize different performance between leader robot and following robot. We design controller of leader robot for desired goal position including the errors between formation and following robot. Thus, we propose leader robot controller considering input constraints of following robot. Finally, we were able to confirm the validity of the proposed method based on simulation results.
Deformation measurement of large scale structures, such as the ground beds of high-rise buildings, tunnels, bridge, and railways, are important for insuring service quality and safety. The pose-relay videometrics method and displacement-relay videometrics method have already presented to measure the pose of non-intervisible objects and vertical subsidence of unstable areas, respectively. Both methods combine the cameras and cooperative markers to form the camera series networks. Based on these two networks, we propose two novel videometrics methods with closed-loop camera series network for deformation measurement of large scale structures. The closed-loop camera series network offers "closed-loop constraints" for the camera series network: the deformation of the reference points observed by different measurement stations is identical. The closed-loop constraints improve the measurement accuracy using camera series network. Furthermore, multiple closed-loops and the flexible combination of camera series network are introduced to facilitate more complex deformation measurement tasks. Simulated results show that the closed-loop constraints can enhance the measurement accuracy of camera series network effectively.
In this paper a mathematical framework for deriving acceleration bounds from given joint torque limits of multiple cooperating robots are described. Especially when the different frictional contacts for every contact are assumed and the torque limits are given in 2-norm sense, we show that the resultant geometrical configuration for the acceleration is composed of corresponding parts of ellipsoids. Since the frictional forces at the contacts are proportional to the normal squeezing forces, the key points of the work includes how to determine internal forces exerted by each robot in order not to cause slip at the contacts while the object is carried by external forces. A set of examples composed of two robot systems are shown with point-contact-with-friction model and insufficient or proper degree of freedom robots.

The traveling purchaser problem(TPP) is a generalization of the well-known traveling salesman problem(TSP), which has many real-world applications such as purchasing the required raw materials for the manufacturing factories and the scheduling of a set of jobs over some machines, and many others. TPP also could be extended to the vehicle routing problem(VRP) by incorporating additional constraints such as multi-purchaser, capacity, distance and time restrictions. In the last decade, TPP has received some attention of the researchers in the operational research area. However it has not received the equivalent interest as much as TSP and VRP. Therefore, there does not exist a review of the TPP. The purpose of this paper is to review the TPP and to describe solution procedures proposed for this problem. We also introduce the ILP formulation for the multiple TPP(mTPP) which is generalized type of TPP. We compare the system performance according to change from TPP to mTPP.
