This paper investigates the dynamic characteristics of a beam axially moving over multiple elastic supports. The spectral element matrix is derived first for the axially moving beam element and then it is used to formulate the spectral element matrix for the moving beam element with an interim elastic support. The moving speed dependance of the eigenvalues is numerically investigated by varying the applied axial tension and the stiffness of the elastic supports. Numerical results show that the fundamental eigenvalue vanishes first at the critical moving speed to generate the static instability.
A damage detection algorithm based on neuro fuzzy hybrid system is presented in this study for location and severity predictions of cracks in beam-like structures. A combination of eigenfrequencies and rotation deviation curves are utilized as input to the soft computing technique. Both single and multiple damage cases are considered. Theoretical expressions leading to modal properties of damaged beam elements are provided. The beam formulation is based on Euler-Bernoulli theory. The cracked section of beam is simulated employing discrete spring model whose compliance is computed from stress intensity factors of fracture mechanics. A hybrid neuro fuzzy technique is utilized to solve the inverse problem of crack identification. Two different neuro fuzzy systems including grid partitioning (GP) and subtractive clustering (SC) are investigated for the highlighted problem. Several error metrics are utilized for evaluating the accuracy of the hybrid algorithms. The study is the first in terms of 1) using the two models of neuro fuzzy systems in crack detection and 2) considering multiple damages in beam elements employing the fused neuro fuzzy procedures. At the end of the study, the developed hybrid models are tested by utilizing the noise-contaminated data. Considering the robustness of the models, they can be employed as damage identification algorithms in health monitoring of beam-like structures.
Since LINAC-based stereotactic radiosurgery uses multiple noncoplanar arcs, three-dimensional dose evaluation and many beam parameters, a lengthy computation time is required to optimize even the simplest case by a trial and error. The basic approach presented in this paper is to show promising methods using an experimental optimization and an analytic optimization The purpose of this paper is not to describe the detailed methods, but introduce briefly, proceeding research done currently or in near future. A more detailed description will be shown in ongoing published papers. Experimental optimization is based on two approaches. One is shaping the target volumes through the use of multiple isocenters determined from dose experience and testing. The other method is conformal therapy using a beam's eye view technique and field shaping. The analytic approach is to adapt computer-aided design optimization in finding optimum irradiation parameters automatically.
Nonlinear vibrations of an Euler-Bernoulli beam resting on a nonlinear elastic foundation are discussed. In search of approximate analytical solutions, the classical multiple scales (MS) and the multiple scales Lindstedt Poincare (MSLP) methods are used. The case of primary resonance is investigated. Amplitude and phase modulation equations are obtained. Steady state solutions are considered. Frequency response curves obtained by both methods are contrasted with each other with respect to the effect of various physical parameters. For weakly nonlinear systems, MS and MSLP solutions are in good agreement. For strong hardening nonlinearities, MSLP solutions exhibit the usual jump phenomena whereas MS solutions are not reliable producing backward curves which are unphysical.
A combined opportunistic multiple beamforming method is presented that the first beam is designed with an aid of channel state information using uplink mid-amble and other beams are orthogonally generated to the first beam sequentially. The power allocation with SINR feedback increases overall throughput for the decentralized systems. The advantages of the proposed scheme is that the first beam is not interfered by other beams guaranteeing quality of service (QoS) and other orthogonal beams are operated opportunistically to obtain multi user diversity. The computer simulation demonstrates that the proposed scheme is effective at a small number of users, which is common in cellular systems, and outperforms conventional spatial division multiple access (SDMA) opportunistic beamforming methods.
The reports regarding the free vibration analysis of uniform beams carrying single or multiple spring-mass systems are plenty, however, among which, those with inertia effect of the helical spring(s) considered are limited. In this paper, by taking the mass of the helical spring into consideration, the stiffness and mass matrices of a spring-mass system and an equivalent mass that may be used to replace the effect of a spring-mass system are derived. By means of the last element stiffness and mass matrices, the natural frequencies and mode shapes for a uniform cantilever beam carrying any number of springmass systems (or loaded beam) are determined using the conventional finite element method (FEM). Similarly, by means of the last equivalent mass, the natural frequencies and mode shapes of the same loaded beam are also determined using the presented equivalent mass method (EMM), where the cantilever beam elastically mounted by a number of lumped masses is replaced by the same beam rigidly attached by the same number of equivalent masses. Good agreement between the numerical results of FEM and those of EMM and/or those of the existing literature confirms the reliability of the presented approaches.
The natural frequencies and the corresponding mode shapes of a non-uniform beam carrying multiple point masses are determined by using the analytical-and-numerical-combined method. To confirm the reliability of the last approach, all the presented results are compared with those obtained from the existing literature or the conventional finite element method and close agreement is achieved. For a "uniform" beam, the natural frequencies and mode shapes of the "clamped-hinged" beam are exactly equal to those of the "hinged-clamped" beam so that one eigenvalue equation is available for two boundary conditions, but this is not true for a "non-uniform" beam. To improve this drawback, a simple transformation function ${\varphi}({\xi})=(e+{\xi}{\alpha})^2$ is presented. Where ${\xi}=x/L$ is the ratio of the axial coordinate x to the beam length L, ${\alpha}$ is a taper constant for the non-uniform beam, e=1.0 for "positive" taper and e=1.0+$|{\alpha}|$ for "negative" taper (where $|{\alpha}|$ is the absolute value of ${\alpha}$). Based on the last function, the eigenvalue equation for a non-uniform beam with "positive" taper (with increasingly varying stiffness) is also available for that with "negative" taper (with decreasingly varying stiffness) so that half of the effort may be saved. For the purpose of comparison, the eigenvalue equations for a positively-tapered beam with five types of boundary conditions are derived. Besides, a general expression for the "normal" mode shapes of the non-uniform beam is also presented.
We developed an accurate and simple vibration model to calculate the natural frequencies and their corresponding vibration modes for multi-span beam bridges with non-uniform cross-sections. A closed set of characteristic functions of a single-span beam was used to construct the vibration modes of the multi-span bridges, which were considered single-span beams with multiple constraints. To simplify the boundary conditions, the restraints were converted into spring constraints. Then the functional of the total energy has the same form as the penalty method. Compared to the conventional penalty method, the penalty coefficients in the proposed approach can be calculated directly, which can avoid the iteration process and convergence problem. The natural frequencies and corresponding vibration modes were obtained via the minimum total potential energy principle. By using the symmetry of the eigenfunctions or structure, the matrix size can be further reduced, which increases the computational efficiency of the proposed model. The accuracy and efficiency of the proposed approach were validated by the finite element method.

In this paper, we propose a data-driven-based beam selection scheme for massive multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) systems in ultra-dense networks (UDN), which is capable of addressing the problem of high computational cost of conventional coordinated beamforming approaches. We consider highly dense small-cell scenarios with more small cells than mobile stations, in the millimetre-wave band. The analog beam selection for hybrid beamforming is a key issue in realizing millimetre-wave UDN MIMO systems. To reduce the computation complexity for the analog beam selection, in this paper, two deep neural network models are used. The channel samples, channel gains, and radio frequency beamforming vectors between the access points and mobile stations are collected at the central/cloud unit that is connected to all the small-cell access points, and are used to train the networks. The proposed machine-learning-based scheme provides an approach for the effective implementation of massive MIMO system in UDN environment.

This study presents nonlinear vibration of a cantilever beam subjected to electromagnetic forces. The dynamic responses of the beam show various nonlinear phenomena with the variation of the system parameters, such as the jump phenomenon, multiple solutions, and the movement of the natural frequency. In this study the nonlinear stiffness due to electromagnetic forces which depends on air gap size is measured experimentally, and the system is modeled by a single degree of freedom nonlinear dynamic system and solutions are solved numerically. The numerical results show good agreements with the experimental results, which demonstrate the nonlinearity of electromagnetic force. Finally the occurrences of the jump phenomenon and the first, second and fourth harmonic components are confirmed in using the method of multiple scales.
