Error resilience for image coding is an important component of multimedia communication system. Error resilience schemes address loss recovery from the compression perspective. Multiple description coding (MDC) is one of the error resilience techniques promising for robust video transmission. It is the way to achieve tradeoff description such as scalar quantization, correlating transform and the quantized frame expansion. In this paper, we consider Multiple Description Scalar Quantization (MDSQ) to wavelet domain. Conventional MDSQ schemes considered description with equal weights in each sub-bands. But, we can see that the each sub-bands is unequal contribution to whole image quality. Therefore, we experiment the multiple design MDSQ table to make probability of zero index high, which gives high efficiency in arithmetic symbol coder. We also compare our proposed method with the conventional methods and show improved performance in terms of redundancy-rate-distortion.

High-capacity video, control and situation awareness data should be transmitted efficiently to control robots properly in the ground unmanned system, which requires the technology maximizing the communication range and the data transmission throughput. This technology is connected to the OFDMA(Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access)-MIMO(Multiple Input Multiple Output) transmission technology under the limited bandwidth and transmission power. In this paper, we design MIMO communication system for ground unmanned systems, and investigate the data reception performance experimentally, comparing with SISO(Single Input Single Output) system. Experiment results show that the data reception performance of MIMO is significantly improved compared to that of SISO, e.g. 4dB gain of sensitivity and 5dB of SNR at the value MPR = 1, for the mobile stations with $2{\times}2$ STBC diversity.
These days, the network convergence for utilizing heterogeneous network on mobile device is being very actively studied. However, understanding characteristics of physical network interfaces and video encoder is needed for using the network convergence technologies efficiently. Thus, this paper proposes an optimized method for streaming video data through different network paths depending on data characteristics and channel condition. Accordingly, unlike the traditional methods, this study divides scalable coded videos by layer importance, the importance of stream information, and the importance in consideration of video decoder's robustness and selectively sends the data via multiple channels. And the experimental results show over 1dB increment in PSNR. The result of this study will provide an optimized video transmission technique in the next generation network convergence environment in which mobile devices have multiple network interfaces.

Traditional live video streaming systems support the limited field of view (FOV) of image to the remote users. A server system based on the pan/tilt camera provides a user with wide view by changing the view direction of the camera mechanically. But, when many clients try to access to the server, this system can not offer their own view to every user simultaneously, and moreover it has the delay by camera motion. In order to offer wide views to several users, we propose new streaming system using the panorama image that has wide view. Our system is a kind of implementation of software pan/tilt camera. The server acquires panorama video and sends a part of the video to clients. Then, each client can control their own view. We need the effective way to reduce the average transmission data size and server burden to the compression because generally the full size of panorama video is too big to be served by the real-time streaming. To solve this problem, we propose an strip-based video compression and adaptive transmission of the compressed multiple strip videos. Experimental results show that our system can be adapted quickly to the change of view and the number of clients. Furthermore, proposed method effectively reduce the transmission data.

In this paper, we propose a procedure to multiple SNS channels automatic streaming through multiple output channels including the output channel of an external streaming server. The multiple SNS channels automatic streaming server includes an output management module for controlling the transmission of video contents to RELAY module that establish two or more output channels. In this paper, we experimented by separate with HD and FHD video using RELAY module in multiple SNS channel automatic streaming. In stream modules using RELAY module of HD video, when the publisher client and the player client and the RELAY module are 1 channel, the occupancy rate of CPU is 0.6% and the occupancy rate of heap memory is 0.3%(20 Mbyte). When the publisher client and the player client and the RELAY module are 183 channels, the occupancy rate of CPU is 99.9% and the occupancy rate of heap memory is 45.8%(3.7Gbyte). Therefore, the paper is not limited to the size of the streaming server by extending the output channel from which the video is transmitted to the output channel of the external streaming server. And a process of allocating an output channel of an external streaming server to an output channel through which an video is transmitted can be easily performed, so that an efficient output channel management can be performed even when a plurality of videos are transmitted.

A conventional CBR channel is now capable of delivering several digitally compressed video programs due to recent advances in video compression, such as MPEG-2, and digital transmission technology. This paper presents a joint video coding scheme that is to maintain a constant sum of bit rates for all the programs but to allow the variable bit rate for individual program in the transimission environment mentioned above. Thus advantages of VBR video compression can be obtained. This paper contributes in two aspects. First, a rate-distortion estimation method for MPEG-2 video is proposed, which enavle us predict the amount of bits and the distortion generated from an encoded picture at a given quantization step size and vice versa. The most attractive features of the proposed rate-distortion estimation method are its accuracy and a computational complexity low enough to be applied to real-time video coding applications. Second, this paper presents an efficient and accurate joint rate control scheme using the rate-distortion estimation results and verifies its performance with experiments. The experimental results show that our coding scheme gives a significant gain even though a small number of video programs are coded jointly. For example, a stable picture quality is maintained among the video programs as well as within a program, and additional extra programs can be transmitted over the same channel bandwidth if the proposed joint video coding scheme is used.
In the wireless communication systems, transmission errors degrade the reconstructed image quality severely. Error concealment in video communication is becoming increasingly important because transmission errors can cause single or multiple loss of macroblocks in video delivery over unreliable channels such as wireless networks and internet. Among various techniques which can reduce the degradation of video quality, the error concealment techniques yield good performance without overheads and the modification of the encoder. In this paper, lost image blocks can be concealed with the OBMC(Overlapped Block Motion Compensation) after new motion vectors of the lost image blocks are allocated by median values using the adaptive selection with motion vectors of adjacent blocks. We know our algorithm is more effective in case of continuous GOB loss. The results show a significant improvement over the zero motion error concealment and other temporal concealment methods such as Motion Vector Rational Interpolation or Median+OBMC by 3dB gain in PSNR.

Error control and concealment in video communication is becoming increasingly important because transmission errors can cause single or multiple loss of macroblocks in video delivery over unreliable channels such as wireless networks and the internet. This paper describes a temporal error concealment by postprocessing. Lost image blocks are overlapped block motion compensated (OBMC) using median of motion vectors from adjacent blocks at the decoder. The results show a significant improvement over zero motion error concealment and other temporal concealment methods such as Motion Vector Rational Interpolation or Side Match Criterion OBMC by 1.4 to 3.5㏈ gain in PSNR. We present experimental results showing improvements in PSNR and computational complexity.

The third generation mobile communications system requiring the reliable multimedia data transmission has provided with the reliable voice, data and video services over the variable propagation environment. However the broadband wireless multiple access technologies cause Inter Symbol Interference (ISI) or Multiple Access Interference (MAI) to degrade the performance of W-CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) system. Constant Modulus Algorithm (CMA) which is frequently used as the adaptive blind equalizers to remove the interfering signal has ill-convergence phenomenon without proper initialization. In this paper, new blind equalization method based on conventional CMA is proposed to improve the channel efficiency, and through computer simulation this is tested over the time varying fading environment of mobile communication system. Consequently, new blind equalization method into concatenated Kalman filter with CMA is verified better than conventional CMA through adopting minimum mean square errors and eye-pattern obtained from algorithm are compared.

DVB-S2 (Digital Video Broadcasting-Satellite, Version 2) system transmits frames which adapt their structures based on the channel conditions, thus requiring simultaneous detection of the start of the Same (SoF) and the frame structure at the initial acquisition stage of the receiver. Also, a very low value of the minimum operating signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) for the acquisition necessitates a method utilizing multiple received frames to meet the required performance. In this paper, performance of joint time synchronization and frame structure detection methods using multiple DVB-S2 frames is evaluated by deriving the detection error probability. In particular, we evaluate the performance and complexity variations when the soft- and hard-decision values of the signal correlation output are used, present the synchronization parameters to optimize the performance, and verify the analysis results via computer simulations.
