The objective of this paper is, based upon the principles of artificial life, to induce emergent behaviors of multiple autonomous mobile robots which complex global intelligence form from simple local interactions. Here, we propose an architecture of neural network learning with reinforcement signals which perceives the neighborhood information and decides the direction and the velocity of movement as mobile robots navigate in a group. As the results of the simulations, the optimum weight is obtained in real time, which not only prevent the collisions between agents and obstacles in the dynamic environment, but also have the mobile robots move and keep in various patterns.

Obstacle avoidance of underwater robots based on a modified virtual force field algorithm is proposed in this paper. The VFF(Virtual Force Field) algorithm, which is widely used in the field of mobile robots, is modified for application to the obstacle avoidance of underwater robots. This Modified Virtual Force Field(MVFF) algorithm using the fuzzy lgoc can be used in moving obstacles avoidance. A fuzzy algorithm is devised to handle various situations which can be faced during autonomous navigation of underwater robots. The proposed obstacle avoidance algorithm has ability to handle multiple moving obstacles. Results of simulation show that the proposed algorithm can be efficiently applied to obstacle avoidance of the underwater robots.
In this paper, we propose a cooperative multi-robot control algorithm. Specifically, the cooperative task is that two mobile robots should transfer a long rigid object along a predefined path. To resolve the problem, we introduce the master-slave concept for two mobile robots, which have the same structure. According to the velocity of the master robot and the positions of two robots on the path, the velocity of the slave robot is determined. In case that the robots can't move further, the role of the robot is interchanged. The effectiveness of this decentralized algorithm is proved by computer simulations.
In this paper, we design an optimal path for multiple mobile robots. For this purpose, we propose a new method of path planning for multiple mobile robots in dynamic environment. First, every mobile robot searches a global path using a distance transform algorithm. Then we put subgoals at crooked path points and optimize them. And finally to obtain an optimal on-line local path, ever)r mobile robot searches a new path with static and dynamic obstacle avoidance.
This paper presents obstacle avoidance method for scout robot or industrial robot in unknown environment by using IR sensor and vision system. In the proposed method, robots share the information where the obstacles are located in real-time, thus the robots can choose the best path for obstacle avoidance. Using IR sensor and vision system, multiple robots efficiently evade the obstacles by the proposed cooperation method. No landmark is used at wall or floor in experiment environment. The obstacles don't have specific color or shape. To get the information of the obstacle, vision system extracts the obstacle coordinate by using an image labeling method. The information obtained by IR sensor is about the obstacle range and the locomotion direction to decide the optimal path for avoiding obstacle. The experiment was conducted in $7m{\times}7m$ indoor environment with two-wheeled mobile robots. It is shown that multiple robots efficiently move along the optimal path in cooperation with each other in the space where obstacles are located.
This paper proposes a global mapping algorithm for multiple robots from an omnidirectional-vision simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) approach based on an object extraction method using Lucas-Kanade optical flow motion detection and images obtained through fisheye lenses mounted on robots. The multi-robot mapping algorithm draws a global map by using map data obtained from all of the individual robots. Global mapping takes a long time to process because it exchanges map data from individual robots while searching all areas. An omnidirectional image sensor has many advantages for object detection and mapping because it can measure all information around a robot simultaneously. The process calculations of the correction algorithm are improved over existing methods by correcting only the object's feature points. The proposed algorithm has two steps: first, a local map is created based on an omnidirectional-vision SLAM approach for individual robots. Second, a global map is generated by merging individual maps from multiple robots. The reliability of the proposed mapping algorithm is verified through a comparison of maps based on the proposed algorithm and real maps.
Since nuclear and chemical materials could damage people and disturb battlefield missions in a wide region, nuclear/chemical reconnaissance systems utilizing multiple mobile robots are highly desirable for rapid and safe reconnaissance. In this paper, we design a nuclear/chemical reconnaissance system including mobile robots. Also we propose time-efficient trajectory planning algorithms using grid coverage and contour finding methods for reconnaissance operation. For grid coverage, we performed in analysis on time consumption for various trajectory patterns generated by straight lines and arcs. We proposed BCF (Bounded Contour Finding) and BCFEP (Bounded Contour Finding with Ellipse Prediction) algorithms for contour finding. With these grid coverage and contour finding algorithms, we suggest trajectory planning algorithms for single, two or four mobile robots. Various simulations reveal that the proposed algorithms improve time-efficiency in nuclear/chemical reconnaissance missions in the given area. Also we conduct basic experiments using a commercial mobile robot and verify the time efficiency of the proposed contour finding algorithms.
In this paper, we propose a method using neural network (NN) to improve the motion control of a decentralized control system for cooperative transportation. In our former work, a decentralized control system for transporting a single object by multiple nonholonomic mobile robots has been developed. One of these mobile robots acts as a leader, who is assumed to be able to plan and to manipulate the omnidirectional motion of the object. Other robots, referred to as followers, cooperatively transport the object by keeping a constant position relative to the object. in this work, it is assumed that the leader can not only plan but also broadcast the local velocity of the object. Then...
