  • The objective of this study is to evaluate the thermal damage characterization of a silicon wafer subjected to a CW laser beam. The variation in temperature and stress during laser beam irradiation has been predicted using a three-dimensional numerical model. The simulation results indicate that the specimen might crack when a 93-$W/cm^2$ laser beam is irradiated on the silicon wafer, and surface melting can occur when a 186-$W/cm^2$ laser beam is irradiated on the silicon wafer. In experiments, straight cracks in the [110] direction were observed for a laser irradiance exceeding 102 $W/cm^2$. Furthermore, surface melting was observed for a laser irradiance exceeding 140 $W/cm^2$. The irradiance for surface melting is less than that in the simulation results because multiple reflections and absorption of the laser beam might occur on the surface cracks, increasing the absorbance of the laser beam.

  • A numerical solution of temperature and thermally induced stress in a wafer during rapid thermal processing (R.T.P) is obtained, and an analysis of onset and propagation of slip is performed and compared with experiment. In order to calculate temperature distribution of a wafer in R.T.P system, heat conduction equation that incorporated with radiative and convective heat transfer model is solved, and the solution of the equation is calculated numerically using alternating direction implicit (A.D.I) method. In dealing with radiative heat transfer, a partially transparent body that absorbs the radiation energy is assumed and this transparent body undergoes multiple internal reflections and absorptions. Two dimensional (assuming plane stress) thermoelastic constitutive equation is used to calculate thermal stress induced in a wafer and finite element method is employed to solve the equation numerically. The stress resolved in the slip directions on the slip planes of silicon is compared with the yield stress of silicon in order to predict the slip. The result of the analysis shows that the wafer temperature at which slip occurs is affected by the heating rate of the R.T.P system. It is observed that once slip occurs in the wafer, the slip grows.

  • The resistive V dipole (RVD) is a V antenna with both arms loaded with the continuous Wu-King resistive profile. The RVD has many advantages for surface and subsurface probing, such as the ability to radiate a short pulse in a desired direction. The radiated pulse is simply related to the input pulse, e.g., derivative. In addition, it mostly eliminates the multiple reflections between the surface of the ground and the antenna because of its low radar cross section. The drawbacks of the RVD include the high input impedance and the difficulty in implementation. This paper presents ways to improve the accuracy and easiness of the implementation and to improve the low-frequency performance while maintaining the characteristics of the V antenna that are good for probing applications. The implemented antenna is used to form a bistatic radar to scan targets underground, and the result is imaged.

  • Electronic products are a major part of evolving industry and human life style; however most of them are known to emit electromagnetic waves that have severe health hazards. Therefore, different materials and fabrication techniques are understudy to control or limit transfer of such waves to human body. In this study, nanocomposite powder is dispersed into epoxy resin and shielding effects such as absorption, reflection, penetration and multiple reflections are investigated. In addition, nano size powder (Ni, $Fe_2O_3$, Fe-85Ni, C-Ni) is fabricated by pulsed wire evaporation method and dispersed manually into epoxy. Characterization techniques such as X-ray diffraction, Scanning electron microscopy and Transmission electron microscopy are used to investigate the phase analysis, size and shape as well as dispersion trend of a nano powder on epoxy matrix. Shielding effect is measured by standard test method to investigate the electromagnetic shielding effectiveness of planar materials, ASTM D4935. At lower frequency, sample consisting nano-powder of Fe-85%Wt Ni shows better electromagnetic shielding effect compared to only epoxy, only Ni, $Fe_2O_3$ and C-Ni samples.

  • The objective of this study is to investigate the influence of surface roughness on the morphology of aluminum 6061-T6 alloy after irradiation with a Nd:YAG pulsed laser. The test specimen was prepared by a polishing process using a diamond paste ($1{\mu}m$) and emery polishing papers (#100, #220, #600, #2400) to obtain different initial surface roughness. After irradiation with ten pulsed-laser shots, the surface morphology was examined by using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), optical microscopy (OM), and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The diameter of the melted zone increased with the surface roughness because the multiple reflections and absorption of the laser beam occurred on the surface because of the surface roughness, so that the absorptance of the laser beam changed. This result was verified using the relative absorptance calculated from the diameter of the melted zone with the surface roughness and the diameter increased with the average surface roughness.

  • The crystal structure of a benzene sorption complex of fully dehydrated Cd2+-exchanged zeolite X, Cd46Si100Al92O384·43C6H6 (a=24.880(6) Å), has been determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction techniques in the cubic space group Fd3 at 21 ℃. The crystal was prepared by ion exchange in a flowing stream of 0.05 M aqueous Cd(NO3)2 for 3 d, followed by dehydration at 400 ℃ and 2 x 10-6 Torr for 2 d, followed by exposure to about 92 Torr of benzene vapor at 22 ℃. The structure was determined in this atmosphere and refined to the final error indices R1=0.054 and Rw=0.066 with 561 reflections for which I > 3σ(I). In this structure, Cd2+ ions are found at four crystallographic sites: eleven Cd2+ ions are at site 1, at the centers of the double six-oxygen rings; six Cd2+ ions lie at site I', in the sodalite cavity opposite to the double six-oxygen rings; and the remaining 29 Cd2+ ions are found at two nonequivalent threefold axes of unit cell, sites Ⅱ' (in the sodalite cavity ) and site Ⅱ (in the supercage) with occupancies of 2 and 27 ions, respectively. Each of these Cd2+ ions coordinates to three framework oxylkens, either at 2.173(13) or 2.224(10) Å, respectively, and extends 0.37 Å into the sodalite unit or 0.60 Å into the supercage from the plane of the three oxygens to which it is bound. The benzene molecules are found at two distinct sites within the supercages. Twenty-seven benzenes lie on threefold axes in the large cavities where they interact facially with the latter 27 site-Ⅱ Cd2+ ions (Cd2+-benzene center=2.72 Å; occupancy=27 molecules/32 sites). The remaining sixteen benzene molecules are found in 12ring planes; occupancy=16 molecules/16 sites. Each hydrogen of these sixteen benzenes is ca. 2.8/3.0 Å from three 12-ring oxygens where each is stabilized by multiple weak electrostatic and van der Waals interactions with framework oxygens.

  • Diurnal variations of air temperature and relative humidity in the Urban Canopy Layer (UCL) of the Seoul metropolitan area are examined using the Weather Research and Forecasting model coupled with the Seoul National University Urban Canopy Model. The canopy layer air temperature is higher than 2-m air temperature and exhibits a more rapid rise and an earlier peak in the daytime. These result from the multiple reflections of shortwave radiation and longwave radiation trapping due to the urban geometry. Because of the absence of vegetation in the UCL and the higher canopy layer air temperature, the canopy layer relative humidity is lower than 2-m relative humidity. Additional simulations with building height changes are conducted to examine the sensitivities of the canopy layer meteorological variables to the urban canyon aspect ratio. As the aspect ratio increases, net sensible heat flux entering the UCL increases (decreases) in the daytime (nighttime). However, the increase in the volume of the UCL reduces the magnitude of change rate of the canopy layer air temperature. As a result, the canopy layer air temperature generally decreases in the daytime and increases in the nighttime as the aspect ratio increases. The changes in the canopy layer relative humidity due to the aspect ratio change are largely determined by the canopy layer air temperature. As the aspect ratio increases, the canopy layer relative humidity is generally increased in the daytime and decreased in the nighttime, contrary to the canopy layer air temperature.

  • The proposed algorithm deals with a detection problem of target echo for narrow-band continuous-wave active sonar in the underwater environment in this paper. In the active sonar systems, ping signal emitted for target detection produces a signal that consists of multiple reflections by many scatterers around, which is called reverberation. The proposed algorithm aims to detect the low-Doppler target echo in the reverberant environment. The proposed algorithm estimates the bearing, frequency, and temporal bases based on beamspace-domain multichannel nonnegative matrix factorization. In particular, the bases are divided into two basis groups - the reverberation group and the echo group, then the basis groups are estimated independently. In order to evaluate the proposed algorithm, a simulation with synthesized reverberation was performed. The results show that the proposed algorithm has enhanced performance than the conventional algorithms.

  • This paper proposes an acoustical inversion method using cepstrum analysis of underwater ship noise. Through the cepstrum analysis, multipath structure can be extracted from the recorded ship noise. The multipath structure comes from interferences between a direct arrival and multiple reflections from the sea surface and the bottom. The acoustic inversion is the optimization process to find the best parameters which show good correlation between cepstrums of the measured signal and the replica. The inversion method was applied to the underwater ship radiated noise data measured at Straits of Korea in order to estimate the acoustic center of the ship and the hydrophone position. The inversion results showed good agreement with the measured information.
