  • Water network partitioning (WNP) is an initiative technique to divide the original water distribution network (WDN) into several sub-networks with only sparse connections between them called, District Metered Areas (DMAs). Operating and managing (O&M) WDN through DMAs is bringing many advantages, such as quantification and detection of water leakage, uniform pressure management, isolation from chemical contamination. The research of WNP recently has been highlighted by applying different methods for dividing a network into a specified number of DMAs. However, it is an open question on how to determine the optimal number of DMAs for a given network. In this study, we present a method to divide an original WDN into DMAs (called Clustering) based on community structure algorithm for auto-creation of suitable DMAs. To that aim, many hydraulic properties are taken into consideration to form the appropriate DMAs, in which each DMA is controlled as uniform as possible in terms of pressure, elevation, and water demand. In a second phase, called Sectorization, the flow meters and control valves are optimally placed to divide the DMAs, while minimizing the pressure reduction. To comprehensively evaluate the WNP performance and determine optimal number of DMAs for given WDN, we apply the framework of multiple-criteria decision analysis. The proposed method is demonstrated using a real-life benchmark network and obtained permissible results. The approach is a decision-support scheme for water utilities to make optimal decisions when designing the DMAs of their WDNs.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the characteristics of consumer evaluative criteria based on clothing quality perception of adult males and females. A demonstrative study was conducted using a questionnaire on adults over 20 years old who were considered to afford to purchase clothes. A total of 650 questionnaires were distributed, and among them, 380 were used for the demonstrative analysis. The study used SPSSWIN V.8.0 for the analysis. Factor analysis and reliability analysis were introduced as analysis methods using the varimax rotation to classify consumer evaluative criteria for clothing purchasing. In addition, frequency analysis, correlation analysis, 1-test, multiple regression analysis, and duncan test are executed. The study result is as follows. First. expectation, importance and performance are examined by customer quality perception. Four factors- practicability, care, aesthetics, and symbolism- are classified through the factor analysis of 19 evaluative attributes based on importance. Second, differences of quality perception f3r expectation, importance and performance were found partly in customers' demographic characteristics. Third, the influential relation of satisfaction and quality perception is examined. Aesthetics and practicability have significant influence on the general satisfaction of evaluative attributes by performance.

  • An existing plasticity model using multiple failure criteria is modified to describe the behavior of reinforced concrete planar members under cyclic load. Multiple failure criteria are used to define both isotropic damage of compressive crushing and anisotropic damage of tensile cracking. A numerical method is developed to define multi-directional and non-orthogonal crack directions. The material model is implemented in the finite element analysis and verified by comparison with existing experiments of reinforced concrete shear wall.

  • Multi-criteria ABC inventory classification, which aims to classify inventory items by considering more than one criterion, is one of the most widely employed techniques for inventory control. The weighted linear optimization (WLO) model proposed by Ramanathan (2006) solves the problem of multi-criteria ABC inventory classification by generating a set of criterion weights for each inventory item and assigning a normalized score to the item for ABC analysis. However, the WLO model has some limitations. First, many inventory items can share the same optimal score, which can hinder a precise classification of inventory items. Second, the model allows too much flexibility in weighting multiple criteria; each item is allowed to choose its own weights so that it can maximize its score. As a result, if an item dominates the others in terms of a certain criterion, it may be classified into a higher class regardless of other criteria by assigning an overwhelming weight to the criterion. Consequently, an item with a high value in an unimportant criterion and low values in others may be inappropriately classified as class A, leading to an inaccurate classification of inventory items. To overcome these shortcomings, we extend the WLO model by using the cross-efficiency method in data envelopment analysis. We claim that the proposed model can provide a more reasonable and accurate classification of inventory items by mitigating the adverse effect of flexibility in the choice of weights and yielding a unique ordering of inventory items.
