  • This paper proposes a carrier frequency of set estimation algorithm for IEEE802.11n system. As IEEE802.11n is a multiple input multiple output(MIMO) system, so there are several combining techniques which are used in multiple receive antenna system. In this paper, we propose hybrid carrier frequency offset estimation algorithms using combining techniques in multiple receive antenna systems, and show that the proposed selection combining carrier frequency offset (CFO) estimation algorithm can estimate carrier frequency offset within 1/10 MSE error at SNR 10 dB in channel B and within 1/2 MSE error at SNR 10 dB in channel D rather than the conventional MIMO CFO one.

  • In this paper, we develop a symbol/frame time and carrier frequency synchronization scheme for multi-carrier signaling in wireless mobile channels. The proposed scheme achieves simultaneous time synchronization and carrier frequency offset estimation. Simulation results show that the frequency offset of multiple sub-carrier spacings can be estimated and that performance is improved with robustness regardless of the cyclic prefix length.

  • In this paper, we analyze the performance of code division multiple access (CDMA) systems with orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) that employ random spreading sequences in an additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel. We obtain the probability density function (pdf) of the multiple access interference and extend the results to OFDM-CDMA systems to determine the pdf of multiple access and inter-carrier interference in terms of the number of users, the spreading length, the number of sub-carriers, and the frequency offset. We consider the synchronous downlink of cellular multi-carrier CDMA and derive a Gaussian approximation of the multiple access and inter-carrier interference. Overall the effect of frequency offset is shown to vary with the system loading. The analysis in this paper is critical for further development into fading channels and frequency selective multipath channels.

  • Multiple input, multiple output orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (MIMO OFDM) systems are the candidate for the future wireless communications. However, the main drawback of MIMO OFDM systems is their sensitivity to carrier frequency offset (CFO) similar to the single input, single output OFDM (SISO OFDM) systems. The demodulation of a signal with CFO causes large bit error rate and degrade the performance of a symbol synchronizer. It is important to estimate the frequency offset and minimize or eliminate its impact. In this paper, we propose a technique based on observation training symbols for estimating CFO by employing block-by-block estimation for SISO OFDM systems. The technique of SISO OFDM is extended to the MIMO OFDM systems. Simulation results show that the proposed techniques have a superior performance and better accuracy compared to the conventional techniques in the sense of mean square error.

  • In this paper, we propose a cancellation scheme of multiple access interference (MAI), which is caused by carrier frequency offset, for the receiver of an interleaved orthogonal frequency division multiple access (IFDMA) uplink system. In the IFDMA systems, carrier frequency offsets introduce adjacent channel interference from other users' subcarriers, which results in performance degradation. In the proposed method, we compensate the carrier frequency offset in time domain and then eliminate MAI by using parallel interference cancellation in frequency domain. Simulation results show that the proposed method is effective in removing the MAI especially when the number of users are large and the MAI severely degrades the system performance.

  • In this paper, we propose to a robust frequency offset estimation method of OFDM signals. A carrier frequency offset may be decomposed into an integer multiple of the subcarrier spacing and a residual frequency offset. Fractional part of frequency offset is obtained by using the maximum likelihood estimation(MLE) method. And we use the correlation of the samples at the output of the discrete Fourier transform(DFT) to estimate integer part of frequency offset. The result shows that the estimation frequency offset is almost linear to frequency offset. We propose to an improved estimation error variance of the carrier frequency offset estimation. The proposed estimator has better performance than the conventional ones in terms of error variance and tracking range.

  • A synchronous multicarrier (MC) code-division multiple access (CDMA) system using inverse fast Fourier transform (IFFT) and fast Fourier transform (FFT) for the downlink mobile communication system operating in a frequency selective Rayleigh fading channel is analyzed. Both carrier frequency offset and timing offset are considered in the analysis. Bit error rate performance of the system with both equal gain combining and maximum ratio combining are obtained. The performance is compared to that of the conventional system using correlation receiver. It is shown that when subcarrier number is large, the system using IFFT/FFT has nearly the same performance as the conventional one, while when the sub carrier number is small, the system using IFFT/FFT will suffer slightly worse performance in the presence of carrier frequency offset.

  • In this paper, we propose a Single Carrier Frequency Division Multiple Access(SC-FDMA) scheme with greatly enhanced tolerance of timing offset among the users. The type of the proposed scheme is similar to code spread Multiple Carrier Direct Spread Code Division Multiple Access(MC DS CDMA). The proposed scheme performs partial Discrete Fourier Transform(DFT) in order to solve high Peak to Average Power Ratio(PAPR) of the MC DS CDMA before Inverse Fast Fourier Transform(IFFT). Exploiting the property Properly Scrambled Walsh-Hadamard(PSW) code has zero correlation despite ${\pm}1$ chip timing offset, the proposed scheme achieves Multiple Access Interference free performance with the timing offset up to ${\pm}1$ OFDM symbol duration with low PAPR. In contrast, the other existing schemes in comparison undergo severe performance degradation even with small timing offset in multipath fading channel.

  • We analyze the performance of code division multiple access (CDMA) system with multicarrier (MC) that employs precoding in synchronous downlink channels. Even though considerable efforts are undergoing for frequency offset estimation and correction, it is inevitable for the system to bear the remaining frequency offset. Therefore it is important to predict accurately the system performance in the presence of the residual frequency offset. We obtain the bit error rate (BER) performance in terms of the number of users, the spreading factor, the number of sub-carriers, and frequency offset. We assume that the spreading factor is equal to the number of sub-carriers, although we can generalize the case. The simulation results show that the BER of MC-CDMA with precoding shows a performance that varies with frequency offset as well as system loading.

  • In this paper, we propose an algorithm to improve the precision of initial carrier-frequency offset estimation for multiband-OFDM (MB-OFDM) UWB system which is considering the quantization-noise effect. In the general OFDM system, the two adjacent and repeated preamble symbols are used for the initial carrier-frequency synchronization while the performance of the frequency-offset estimation is bounded by quantization effect generated from analog-to-digital conversion at the receiver. This paper proposes a method in which one-symbol interval between two adjacent preamble symbols for the initial frequency synchronization is extended to multiple-symbol interval between non-adjacent symbols in an extent that phase ambiguity does not occur. In this paper, we also present '6' as optimal multiple symbol interval for the MB-OFDM system with 30 preamble symbols on 3-band hopping and with 4-bit A/D conversion at the receiver. Under the channel environments for the MB-OFDM UWB system, the simulation results show that the proposed estimation algorithm can achieve the initial estimation in offset precision less than 5 ppm.
